Structural and transport properties of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$Co$_{1-y}$Nb$_y$O$_3$ thin films

We present the structural and transport properties of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$Co$_{1-y}$Nb$_y$O$_3$ ($y=$ 0.1 and $x=$ 0; $y=$ 0.15 and $x=$ 0.3) thin films grown on (001) orientated single crystalline ceramic substrates to investigate the effect of lattice induced compressive and tensile strain. The high resolution x-ray diffraction measurements, including $θ$-2$θ$ scan, $Φ$-scan, and reciprocal space mapping, affirm single phase; four-fold symmetry; good quality of deposited thin films. The atomic force micrographs confirm that these films have small root mean square roughness in the range of $\sim$0.5--7~nm. We observed additional Raman active modes in the films owing to the lowered crystal symmetry as compared to the bulk. More interestingly, the temperature dependent dc-resistivity measurements reveal that films become insulating due to induced lattice strain in comparison to bulk, however for the larger compressive strained films conductivity increase significantly owing to the higher degree of $p-d$ hybridization and reduction in bandwidth near the Fermi level.

Structural, transport, optical and electronic properties of Sr$_2$CoNbO$_6$ thin films

We study the effect of substrate induced strain on the structural, transport, optical and electronic properties of Sr$_2$CoNbO$_6$ double perovskite thin films. The reciprocal space mapping, $ϕ$-scan and high-resolution $θ$-2$θ$ scans of x-ray diffraction patterns suggest the epitaxial nature and high-quality of the films deposited on various single crystal ceramic substrates. A systematic enhancement in the dc electronic conductivity is observed with increase in the compressive strain, while a sharp reduction in case of tensile strain, which are further supported by change in the activation energy and density of states near the Fermi level. The optical band gap extracted from two distinct absorption bands, observed in the visible-near infrared spectroscopy show a non-monotonic behavior in case of compressive strain while significant enhancement with tensile strain. Unlike the bulk Sr$_2$CoNbO$_6$ (Co$^{3+}$ and Nb$^{5+}$), we observe different valence states of Co namely 2+, 3+ and 4+, and tetravalent Nb (4$d^1$) in the x-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements. Moreover, a reduction in the average oxygen valency with the compressive strain due to enhancement in the covalent character of Co/Nb--O bond is evident. Interestingly, we observe sharp Raman active modes in these thin films, which indicates a significant enhancement in structural ordering as compared to the bulk.

Finite-Range Coulomb Gas Models I: Some Analytical Results

Dyson has shown an equivalence between infinite-range Coulomb gas models and classical random matrix ensembles for the study of eigenvalue statistics. In this paper, we introduce finite-range Coulomb gas (FRCG) models as a generalization of the Dyson models with a finite range of eigenvalue interactions. As the range of interaction increases, there is a transition from Poisson statistics to classical random matrix statistics. These models yield new universality classes of random matrix ensembles. They also provide a theoretical framework to study banded random matrices, and dynamical systems whose matrix representation can be written in the form of banded matrices.

Finite-Range Coulomb Gas Models II: Applications to Quantum Kicked Rotors and Banded Random Matrices

In paper I of this two-stage exposition, we introduced finite-range Coulomb gas (FRCG) models, and developed an integral-equation framework for their study. We obtained exact analytical results for $d = 0,1,2 $, where d denotes the range of eigenvalue interaction. We found that the integral-equation framework was not analytically tractable for higher values of $d$. In this paper II, we develop a Monte Carlo (MC) technique to study FRCG models. Our MC simulations provide a solution of FRCG models for arbitrary $d$. We show that, as d increases, there is a transition from Poisson to Wigner-Dyson classical random matrix statistics. Thus FRCG models provide a novel route for transition from Poisson to Wigner-Dyson statistics. The analytical formulation obtained in paper I, and MC techniques developed in this paper II, are used to study banded random matrices (BRM) and quantum kicked rotors (QKR). We demonstrate that, for a BRM of bandwidth $b$ and a QKR of chaos parameter $α$, the appropriate FRCG model has range $d=b^2/N=α^2/N$, for $N \rightarrow \infty $. Here, N is the dimensionality of the matrix in BRM, and the evolution operator matrix in QKR.

Parametric Number Covariance in Quantum Chaotic Spectra

We study spectral parametric correlations in quantum chaotic systems and introduce the number covariance as a measure of such correlations. We derive analytic results for the classical random matrix ensembles using the binary correlation method and obtain compact expressions for the co- variance. We illustrate the universality of this measure by presenting the spectral analysis of the quantum kicked rotors for the time-reversal invariant and time-reversal non-invariant cases. A local version of the parametric number variance introduced earlier is also investigated.

Saturation of number variance in embedded random matrix ensembles

We study fluctuation properties of embedded random matrix ensembles of non-interacting particles. For ensemble of two non-interacting particle systems, we find that unlike the spectra of classical random matrices, correlation functions are non-stationary. In the locally stationary region of spectra, we study the number variance and the spacing distributions. The spacing distributions follow the Poisson statistics which is a key behavior of uncorrelated spectra. The number variance varies linearly as in the Poisson case for short correlation lengths but a kind of regularization occurs for large correlation lengths, and the number variance approaches saturation values. These results are known in the study of integrable systems but are being demonstrated for the first time in random matrix theory. We conjecture that the interacting particle cases, which exhibit the characteristics of classical random matrices for short correlation lengths, will also show saturation effects for large correlation lengths.

Universal spectral correlations in ensembles of random normal matrices

We consider non-gaussian ensembles of random normal matrices with the constraint that the ensembles are invariant under unitary transformations. We show that the level density of eigenvalues exhibits disk to ring transition in the complex plane. We also show that the n-eigenvalue correlation and the spacing distribution are universal and identical to that of complex (Gaussian) Ginibre ensemble. Our results are confirmed by Monte Carlo calculations. We verify the universality for dissipative quantum kicked rotor system.

Conductance Distributions in Chaotic Mesoscopic Cavities

We consider the conductance distributions in chaotic mesoscopic cavities for all three invariant classes of random matrices for the arbitrary number of channels N1, N2 in the connecting leads. We show that the Laplace transforms of the distributions can be expressed in terms of determinants in the unitary case and Pfaffians in the orthogonal and symplectic cases. The inverse Laplace transforms then give the exact distributions. This formalism is particularly useful for small values of N = min (N1, N2), and thus is of direct experimental relevance. We also obtain the conductance distributions for orthogonal-unitary and symplectic-unitary crossover ensembles.

Entanglement in random pure states: Spectral density and average von Neumann entropy

Quantum entanglement plays a crucial role in quantum information, quantum teleportation and quantum computation. The information about the entanglement content between subsystems of the composite system is encoded in the Schmidt eigenvalues. We derive here closed expressions for the spectral density of Schmidt eigenvalues for all three invariant classes of random matrix ensembles. We also obtain exact results for average von Neumann entropy. We find that maximum average entanglement is achieved if the system belongs to the symplectic invariant class.

Jacobi Crossover Ensembles of Random Matrices and Statistics of Transmission Eigenvalues

We study the transition in conductance properties of chaotic mesoscopic cavities as time-reversal symmetry is broken. We consider the Brownian motion model for transmission eigenvalues for both types of transitions, viz., orthogonal-unitary and symplectic-unitary crossovers depending on the presence or absence of spin-rotation symmetry of the electron. In both cases the crossover is governed by a Brownian motion parameter τ, which measures the extent of time-reversal symmetry breaking. It is shown that the results obtained correspond to the Jacobi crossover ensembles of random matrices. We derive the level density and the correlation functions of higher orders for the transmission eigenvalues. We also obtain the exact expressions for the average conductance, average shot-noise power and variance of conductance, as functions of τ, for arbitrary number of modes (channels) in the two leads connected to the cavity. Moreover, we give the asymptotic result for the variance of shot-noise power for both the crossovers, the exact results being too long. In the τ \rightarrow 0 and τ \rightarrow \infty limits the known results for the orthogonal (or symplectic) and unitary ensembles are reproduced. In the weak time-reversal symmetry breaking regime our results are shown to be in agreement with the semiclassical predictions.

Random Matrix Model for Nakagami-Hoyt Fading

Random matrix model for the Nakagami-q (Hoyt) fading in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication channels with arbitrary number of transmitting and receiving antennas is considered. The joint probability density for the eigenvalues of H†H (or HH†), where H is the channel matrix, is shown to correspond to the Laguerre crossover ensemble of random matrices and is given in terms of a Pfaffian. Exact expression for the marginal density of eigenvalues is obtained as a series consisting of associated Laguerre polynomials. This is used to study the effect of fading on the Shannon channel capacity. Exact expressions for higher order density correlation functions are also given which can be used to study the distribution of channel capacity.

Universal Spectral Correlations in Orthogonal-Unitary and Symplectic-Unitary Crossover Ensembles of Random Matrices

Orthogonal - unitary and symplectic - unitary crossover ensembles of random matrices are relevant in many contexts, especially in the study of time reversal symmetry breaking in quantum chaotic systems. Using skew-orthogonal polynomials we show that the same generic form of n-level correlation functions are obtained for the Jacobi family of crossover ensembles, including the Laguerre and Gaussian cases. For large matrices we find universal forms of unfolded correlation functions when expressed in terms of a rescaled transition parameter with arbitrary initial level density.
