An entanglement-based volumetric benchmark for near-term quantum hardware

We introduce a volumetric benchmark for near-term quantum platforms based on the generation and verification of genuine entanglement across n-qubits using graph states and direct stabilizer measurements. Our benchmark evaluates the robustness of multipartite and bipartite n-qubit entanglement with respect to many sources of hardware noise: qubit decoherence, CNOT and swap gate noise, and readout error. We demonstrate our benchmark on multiple superconducting qubit platforms available from IBM (ibmq_belem, ibmq_toronto, ibmq_guadalupe and ibmq_jakarta). Subsets of $n<10$ qubits are used for graph state preparation and stabilizer measurement. Evaluation of genuine and biseparable entanglement witnesses we report observations of $5$ qubit genuine entanglement, but robust multipartite entanglement is difficult to generate for $n>4$ qubits and identify two-qubit gate noise as strongly correlated with the quality of genuine multipartite entanglement.

Many Body Thermodynamics on Quantum Computers via Partition Function Zeros

Interacting quantum systems illustrate complex phenomena including phase transitions to novel ordered phases. The universal nature of critical phenomena reduces their description to determining only the transition temperature and the critical exponents. Numerically calculating these results for systems in new universality classes is complicated due to critical slowing down, requiring increasing resources near the critical point. An alternative approach analytically continues the calculation onto the complex plane and determines the partition function via its zeros. Here we show how to robustly perform this analysis on noisy intermediate scale trapped ion quantum computers in a scalable manner, using the XXZ model as a prototype. We illustrate the transition from XY-like behavior to Ising-like behavior as a function of the anisotropy. While quantum computers cannot yet scale to the thermodynamic limit, our work provides a pathway to do so as hardware improves, allowing the determination of critical phenomena for systems that cannot be solved otherwise.

Quantum computation of magnon spectra

We demonstrate quantum computation of two-point correlation functions for a Heisenberg spin chain. Using the IBM Q 20 quantum machines, we find that for two sites the correlation functions produce the exact results reliably. For four sites, results from the IBM Q 20 Tokyo quantum computer are noisy due to read out errors and decoherence. Nevertheless, the correlation functions retain the correct spectral information. This is illustrated in the frequency domain by accurately extracting the magnon energies from peaks in the spectral function.
