Hadron Spectroscopy with Lattice QCD

The status and prospects for investigations of exotic and conventional hadrons with lattice QCD are discussed. The majority of hadrons decay strongly via one or multiple decay-channels, including most of the experimentally discovered exotic hadrons. Despite this difficult challenge, the properties of several hadronic resonances have been determined within lattice QCD. To further discern the spectroscopic properties of various hadrons and to help resolve their nature we present our suggestions for future analytic and lattice studies.

Relativistic-invariant formulation of the NREFT three-particle quantization condition

A three-particle quantization condition on the lattice is written down in a manifestly relativistic-invariant form by using a generalization of the non-relativistic effective field theory (NREFT) approach. Inclusion of the higher partial waves is explicitly addressed. A partial diagonalization of the quantization condition into the various irreducible representations of the (little groups of the) octahedral group has been carried out both in the center-of-mass frame and in moving frames. Furthermore, producing synthetic data in a toy model, the relativistic invariance is explicitly demonstrated for the three-body bound state spectrum.

Spurious poles in a finite volume

Using effective-range expansion for the two-body amplitudes may generate spurious sub-threshold poles outside of the convergence range of the expansion. In the infinite volume, the emergence of such poles leads to the inconsistencies in the three-body equations, e.g., to the breakdown of unitarity. We investigate the effect of the spurious poles on the three-body quantization condition in a finite volume and show that it leads to a peculiar dependence of the energy levels on the box size $L$. Furthermore, within a simple model, it is demonstrated that the procedure for the removal of these poles, which was recently proposed in Ref.[1] in the infinite volume, can be adapted to the finite-volume calculations. The structure of the exact energy levels is reproduced with an accuracy that systematically improves order by order in the EFT expansion.

Relativistic $N$-particle energy shift in finite volume

We present a general method for deriving the energy shift of an interacting system of $N$ spinless particles in a finite volume. To this end, we use the nonrelativistic effective field theory (NREFT), and match the pertinent low-energy constants to the scattering amplitudes. Relativistic corrections are explicitly included up to a given order in the $1/L$ expansion. We apply this method to obtain the ground state of $N$ particles, and the first excited state of two and three particles to order $L^{-6}$ in terms of the threshold parameters of the two- and three-particle relativistic scattering amplitudes. We use these expressions to analyze the $N$-particle ground state energy shift in the complex $φ^4$ theory.

A framework for the calculation of the $ΔNγ^*$ transition form factors on the lattice

Using the non-relativistic effective field theory framework in a finite volume, we discuss the extraction of the $ΔNγ^*$ transition form factors from lattice data. A counterpart of the Lüscher approach for the matrix elements of unstable states is formulated. In particular, we thoroughly discuss various kinematic settings, which are used in the calculation of the above matrix element on the lattice. The emerging Lüscher-Lellouch factor and the analytic continuation of the matrix elements into the complex plane are also considered in detail. A full group-theoretical analysis of the problem is made, including the partial-wave mixing and projecting out the invariant form factors from data.

Spectrum of three-body bound states in a finite volume

The spectrum of a bound state of three identical particles with a mass $m$ in a finite cubic box is studied. It is shown that in the unitary limit, the energy shift of a shallow bound state is given by $ΔE=c (κ^2/m)\,(κL)^{-3/2}|A|^2\exp(-2κL/\sqrt{3})$, where $κ$ is the bound-state momentum, $L$ is the box size, $|A|^2$ denotes the three-body analog of the asymptotic normalization coefficient of the bound state wave function and $c$ is a numerical constant. The formula is valid for $κL\gg 1$.

The $B\to K^*$ form factors on the lattice

The extraction of the $B\to K^*$ transition form factors from lattice data is studied, applying non-relativistic effective field theory in a finite volume. The possible mixing of $πK$ and $ηK$ states is taken into account. The two-channel analogue of the Lellouch-Lüscher formula is reproduced. Due to the resonance nature of the $K^*$, an equation is derived, which allows to determine the form factors at the pole position in a process-independent manner. The infinitely-narrow width approximation of the results is discussed.

The Optical Potential on the Lattice

The extraction of hadron-hadron scattering parameters from lattice data by using the Lüscher approach becomes increasingly complicated in the presence of inelastic channels. We propose a method for the direct extraction of the complex hadron-hadron optical potential on the lattice, which does not require the use of the multi-channel Lüscher formalism. Moreover, this method is applicable without modifications if some inelastic channels contain three or more particles.

Three particles in a finite volume

The volume-dependence of a shallow three-particle bound state in the cubic box with a size $L$ is studied. It is shown that, in the unitary limit, the energy-level shift from the infinite-volume position is given by $ΔE=c (κ^2/m)\,(κL)^{-3/2}|A|^2 \exp(-2κL/\sqrt{3})$, where $κ$ is the bound-state momentum and $|A|^2$ denotes the three-body analog of the asymptotic normalization constant, which encodes the information about the short-range interactions in the three-body system.

Recoil corrections in antikaon-deuteron scattering

The recoil retardation effect in the $K^-d$ scattering length is studied. Using the non-relativistic effective field theory approach, it is demonstrated that a systematic perturbative expansion of the recoil corrections in the parameter $ξ=M_K/m_N$ is possible in spite of the fact that $K^-d$ scattering at low energies is inherently non-perturbative due to the large values of the $\bar KN$ scattering lengths. The first order correction to the $K^-d$ scattering length due to single insertion of the retardation term in the multiple-scattering series is calculated. The recoil effect turns out to be reasonably small even at the physical value of $M_K/m_N\simeq 0.5$.

Partial twisting for scalar mesons

The possibility of imposing partially twisted boundary conditions is investigated for the scalar sector of lattice QCD. According to the commonly shared belief, the presence of quark-antiquark annihilation diagrams in the intermediate state generally hinders the use of the partial twisting. Using effective field theory techniques in a finite volume, and studying the scalar sector of QCD with total isospin I=1, we however demonstrate that partial twisting can still be performed, despite the fact that annihilation diagrams are present. The reason for this are delicate cancellations, which emerge due to the graded symmetry in partially quenched QCD with valence, sea and ghost quarks. The modified Luescher equation in case of partial twisting is given.

Three particles in a finite volume

Within the non-relativistic potential scattering theory, we derive a generalized version of the Lüscher formula, which includes three-particle inelastic channels. Faddeev equations in a finite volume are discussed in detail. It is proved that, even in the presence of the three-particle intermediate states, the discrete spectrum in a finite box is determined by the infinite-volume elements of the scattering S-matrix up to corrections, exponentially suppressed at large volumes.

Extraction of the resonance parameters at finite times

In this paper we propose a model-independent method to extract the resonance parameters on the lattice directly from the Euclidean 2-point correlation functions of the field operators at finite times. The method is tested in case of the two-point function of the Delta-resonance, calculated at one loop in Small Scale Expansion. Further, the method is applied to a 1+1-dimensional model with two coupled Ising spins and the results are compared with earlier ones obtained by using Luescher's approach.

The pion-nucleon scattering lengths from pionic deuterium

We use the framework of effective field theories to discuss the determination of the S-wave πN scattering lengths from the recent high-precision measurements of pionic deuterium observables. The theoretical analysis proceeds in several steps. Initially, the precise value of the pion-deuteron scattering length a_{πd} is extracted from the data. Next, a_{πd} is related to the S-wave πN scattering lengths a_+ and a_-. We discuss the use of this information for constraining the values of these scattering lengths in the full analysis, which also includes the input from the pionic hydrogen energy shift and width measurements, and throughly investigate the accuracy limits for this procedure. In this paper, we also give a detailed comparison to other effective field theory approaches, as well as with the earlier work on the subject, carried out within the potential model and multiple scattering framework.
