AI for Next Generation Computing: Emerging Trends and Future Directions

Autonomic computing investigates how systems can achieve (user) specified control outcomes on their own, without the intervention of a human operator. Autonomic computing fundamentals have been substantially influenced by those of control theory for closed and open-loop systems. In practice, complex systems may exhibit a number of concurrent and inter-dependent control loops. Despite research into autonomic models for managing computer resources, ranging from individual resources (e.g., web servers) to a resource ensemble (e.g., multiple resources within a data center), research into integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to improve resource autonomy and performance at scale continues to be a fundamental challenge. The integration of AI/ML to achieve such autonomic and self-management of systems can be achieved at different levels of granularity, from full to human-in-the-loop automation. In this article, leading academics, researchers, practitioners, engineers, and scientists in the fields of cloud computing, AI/ML, and quantum computing join to discuss current research and potential future directions for these fields. Further, we discuss challenges and opportunities for leveraging AI and ML in next generation computing for emerging computing paradigms, including cloud, fog, edge, serverless and quantum computing environments.

Multi-Fault Diagnosis Of Industrial Rotating Machines Using Data-Driven Approach: A Review Of Two Decades Of Research

Industry 4.0 is an era of smart manufacturing. Manufacturing is impossible without the use of machinery. Majority of these machines comprise rotating components and are called rotating machines. The engineers' top priority is to maintain these critical machines to reduce the unplanned shutdown and increase the useful life of machinery. Predictive maintenance (PDM) is the current trend of smart maintenance. The challenging task in PDM is to diagnose the type of fault. With Artificial Intelligence (AI) advancement, data-driven approach for predictive maintenance is taking a new flight towards smart manufacturing. Several researchers have published work related to fault diagnosis in rotating machines, mainly exploring a single type of fault. However, a consolidated review of literature that focuses more on multi-fault diagnosis of rotating machines is lacking. There is a need to systematically cover all the aspects right from sensor selection, data acquisition, feature extraction, multi-sensor data fusion to the systematic review of AI techniques employed in multi-fault diagnosis. In this regard, this paper attempts to achieve the same by implementing a systematic literature review on a Data-driven approach for multi-fault diagnosis of Industrial Rotating Machines using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) method. The PRISMA method is a collection of guidelines for the composition and structure of systematic reviews and other meta-analyses. This paper identifies the foundational work done in the field and gives a comparative study of different aspects related to multi-fault diagnosis of industrial rotating machines. The paper also identifies the major challenges, research gap. It gives solutions using recent advancements in AI in implementing multi-fault diagnosis, giving a strong base for future research in this field.

Securing AI-based Healthcare Systems using Blockchain Technology: A State-of-the-Art Systematic Literature Review and Future Research Directions

Healthcare systems are increasingly incorporating Artificial Intelligence into their systems, but it is not a solution for all difficulties. AI's extraordinary potential is being held back by challenges such as a lack of medical datasets for training AI models, adversarial attacks, and a lack of trust due to its black box working style. We explored how blockchain technology can improve the reliability and trustworthiness of AI-based healthcare. This paper has conducted a Systematic Literature Review to explore the state-of-the-art research studies conducted in healthcare applications developed with different AI techniques and Blockchain Technology. This systematic literature review proceeds with three different paths as natural language processing-based healthcare systems, computer vision-based healthcare systems and acoustic AI-based healthcare systems. We found that 1) Defence techniques for adversarial attacks on AI are available for specific kind of attacks and even adversarial training is AI based technique which in further prone to different attacks. 2) Blockchain can address security and privacy issues in healthcare fraternity. 3) Medical data verification and user provenance can be enabled with Blockchain. 4) Blockchain can protect distributed learning on heterogeneous medical data. 5) The issues like single point of failure, non-transparency in healthcare systems can be resolved with Blockchain. Nevertheless, it has been identified that research is at the initial stage. As a result, we have synthesized a conceptual framework using Blockchain Technology for AI-based healthcare applications that considers the needs of each NLP, Computer Vision, and Acoustic AI application. A global solution for all sort of adversarial attacks on AI based healthcare. However, this technique has significant limits and challenges that need to be addressed in future studies.

Fuzzy Mutation Embedded Hybrids of Gravitational Search and Particle Swarm Optimization Methods for Engineering Design Problems

Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are nature-inspired, swarm-based optimization algorithms respectively. Though they have been widely used for single-objective optimization since their inception, they suffer from premature convergence. Even though the hybrids of GSA and PSO perform much better, the problem remains. Hence, to solve this issue we have proposed a fuzzy mutation model for two hybrid versions of PSO and GSA - Gravitational Particle Swarm (GPS) and PSOGSA. The developed algorithms are called Mutation based GPS (MGPS) and Mutation based PSOGSA (MPSOGSA). The mutation operator is based on a fuzzy model where the probability of mutation has been calculated based on the closeness of particle to population centroid and improvement in the particle value. We have evaluated these two new algorithms on 23 benchmark functions of three categories (unimodal, multi-modal and multi-modal with fixed dimension). The experimental outcome shows that our proposed model outperforms their corresponding ancestors, MGPS outperforms GPS 13 out of 23 times (56.52%) and MPSOGSA outperforms PSOGSA 17 times out of 23 (73.91 %). We have also compared our results against those of recent optimization algorithms such as Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA), Opposition-Based SCA, and Volleyball Premier League Algorithm (VPL). In addition, we have applied our proposed algorithms on some classic engineering design problems and the outcomes are satisfactory. The related codes of the proposed algorithms can be found in this link: Fuzzy-Mutation-Embedded-Hybrids-of-GSA-and-PSO.

Realization of MIMO Channel Model for Spatial Diversity with Capacity and SNR Multiplexing Gains

Multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system transmission is a popular diversity technique to improve the reliability of a communication system where transmitter, communication channel and receiver are the important elements. Data transmission reliability can be ensured when the bit error rate is very low. Normally, multiple antenna elements are used at both the transmitting and receiving section in MIMO Systems. MIMO system utilizes antenna diversity or spatial diversity coding system in wireless channels because wireless channels severely suffer from multipath fading in which the transmitted signal is reflected along various multiple paths before reaching to the destination or receiving section.Parallel transmission of MIMO system has also been implemented where both the real part and imaginary part of the original, detected and the corresponding received data sequence has been described graphically. The MIMO channel average capacity is achieved more than 80% for dissimilar levels of impairments in transceiver when the value of kappa (Level of impairments in transmitter hardware) reduces from 0.02 to 0.005. The finite-SNR multiplexing gain (Proportion of MIMO system capacity to SISO system capacity) has been observed for deterministic and uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels correspondingly. The core difference is in the high SNR level. It may occur for two reasons: (a) there is a quicker convergence to the limits under transceiver impairments (b) deterministic channels that are built on digital architectural plans or topographical maps of the propagation environment acquire an asymptotic gain superior than multiplexing gain when the number of transmitting antenna is greater than the number of receiving antenna.

Hybrid Genetic Algorithm for Cloud Computing Applications

In this paper with the aid of genetic algorithm and fuzzy theory, we present a hybrid job scheduling approach, which considers the load balancing of the system and reduces total execution time and execution cost. We try to modify the standard Genetic algorithm and to reduce the iteration of creating population with the aid of fuzzy theory. The main goal of this research is to assign the jobs to the resources with considering the VM MIPS and length of jobs. The new algorithm assigns the jobs to the resources with considering the job length and resources capacities. We evaluate the performance of our approach with some famous cloud scheduling models. The results of the experiments show the efficiency of the proposed approach in term of execution time, execution cost and average Degree of Imbalance (DI).

A Multi-Factor Security Protocol for Wireless Payment - Secure Web Authentication using Mobile Devices

Previous Web access authentication systems often use either the Web or the Mobile channel individually to confirm the claimed identity of the remote user. This paper proposes a new protocol using multifactor authentication system that is both secure and highly usable. It uses a novel approach based on Transaction Identification Code and SMS to enforce extra security level with the traditional Login/password system. The system provides a highly secure environment that is simple to use and deploy, that does not require any change in infrastructure or protocol of wireless networks. This Protocol for Wireless Payment is extended to provide two way authentications.

CompChall: Addressing Password Guessing Attacks

Even though passwords are the most convenient means of authentication, they bring along themselves the threat of dictionary attacks. Dictionary attacks may be of two kinds: online and offline. While offline dictionary attacks are possible only if the adversary is able to collect data for a successful protocol execution by eavesdropping on the communication channel and can be successfully countered using public key cryptography, online dictionary attacks can be performed by anyone and there is no satisfactory solution to counter them. This paper presents a new authentication protocol which is called CompChall (computational challenge). The proposed protocol uses only one way hash functions as the building blocks and attempts to eliminate online dictionary attacks by implementing a challenge-response system. This challenge-response system is designed in a fashion that it does not pose any difficulty to a genuine user but is time consuming and computationally intensive for an adversary trying to launch a large number of login requests per unit time as in the case of an online dictionary attack. The protocol is stateless and thus less vulnerable to DoS (Denial of Service) attacks.

Grid Security and Integration with Minimal Performance Degradation

Computational grids are believed to be the ultimate framework to meet the growing computational needs of the scientific community. Here, the processing power of geographically distributed resources working under different ownerships, having their own access policy, cost structure and the likes, is logically coupled to make them perform as a unified resource. The continuous increase of availability of high-bandwidth communication as well as powerful computers built of low-cost components further enhance chances of computational grids becoming a reality. However, the question of grid security remains one of the important open research issues. Here, we present some novel ideas about how to implement grid security, without appreciable performance degradation in grids. A suitable alternative to the computationally expensive encryption is suggested, which uses a key for message authentication. Methods of secure transfer and exchange of the required key(s) are also discussed.

A Novel Scheme for Secured Data Transfer Over Computer Networks

This paper presents a novel encryption-less algorithm to enhance security in transmission of data in networks. The algorithm uses an intuitively simple idea of a "jigsaw puzzle" to break the transformed data into multiple parts where these parts form the pieces of the puzzle. Then these parts are packaged into packets and sent to the receiver. A secure and efficient mechanism is provided to convey the information that is necessary for obtaining the original data at the receiver-end from its parts in the packets, that is, for solving the "jigsaw puzzle". The algorithm is designed to provide information-theoretic (that is, unconditional) security by the use of a one-time pad like scheme so that no intermediate or unintended node can obtain the entire data. A parallelizable design has been adopted for the implementation. An authentication code is also used to ensure authenticity of every packet.

A Very Simple Approach for 3-D to 2-D Mapping

Many times we need to plot 3-D functions e.g., in many scientificc experiments. To plot this 3-D functions on 2-D screen it requires some kind of mapping. Though OpenGL, DirectX etc 3-D rendering libraries have made this job very simple, still these libraries come with many complex pre- operations that are simply not intended, also to integrate these libraries with any kind of system is often a tough trial. This article presents a very simple method of mapping from 3D to 2D, that is free from any complex pre-operation, also it will work with any graphics system where we have some primitive 2-D graphics function. Also we discuss the inverse transform and how to do basic computer graphics transformations using our coordinate mapping system.

An LSB Data Hiding Technique Using Natural Numbers

In this paper, a novel data hiding technique is proposed, as an improvement over the Fibonacci LSB data-hiding technique proposed by Battisti et al,based on decomposition of a number (pixel-value) in sum of natural numbers. This particular representation again generates a different set of (virtual) bit-planes altogether, suitable for embedding purposes. We get more bit-planes than that we get using Prime technique. These bit-planes not only allow one to embed secret message in higher bit-planes but also do it without much distortion, with a much better stego-image quality, and in a reliable and secured manner, guaranteeing efficient retrieval of secret message. A comparative performance study between the classical Least Significant Bit(LSB) method, the Fibonacci LSB data-hiding technique and the proposed schemes indicate that image quality of the stego-image hidden by the technique using the natural decomposition method improves drastically against that using Prime and Fibonacci decomposition technique. Experimental results also illustrate that, the stego-image is visually indistinguishable from the original cover-image. Also we show the optimality of our technique.

An LSB Data Hiding Technique Using Prime Numbers

In this paper, a novel data hiding technique is proposed, as an improvement over the Fibonacci LSB data-hiding technique proposed by Battisti et al. First we mathematically model and generalize our approach. Then we propose our novel technique, based on decomposition of a number (pixel-value) in sum of prime numbers. A comparative performance study between the classical Least Significant Bit (LSB)method, the Fibonacci LSB data-hiding technique and our proposed schemes has been done. Analysis indicates that image quality of the stego-image hidden by the technique using Fibonacci decomposition improves against that using simple LSB substitution method, while the same using the prime decomposition method improves drastically against that using Fibonacci decomposition technique. Experimental results show that, the stego-image is visually indistinguishable from the original cover-image.

Data Hiding Techniques Using Prime and Natural Numbers

In this paper, a few novel data hiding techniques are proposed. These techniques are improvements over the classical LSB data hiding technique and the Fibonacci LSB data-hiding technique proposed by Battisti et al. \cite{r1}. The classical LSB technique is the simplest, but using this technique it is possible to embed only in first few bit-planes, since image quality becomes drastically distorted when embedding in higher bit-planes. Battisti et al. \cite{r1} proposed an improvement over this by using Fibonacci decomposition technique and generating a different set of virtual bit-planes all together, thereby increasing the number of bit-planes. In this paper, first we mathematically model and generalize this particular approach of virtual bit-plane generation. Then we propose two novel embedding techniques, both of which are special-cases of our generalized model. The first embedding scheme is based on decomposition of a number (pixel-value) in sum of prime numbers, while the second one is based on decomposition in sum of natural numbers. Each of these particular representations generates a different set of (virtual) bit-planes altogether, suitable for embedding purposes. They not only allow one to embed secret message in higher bit-planes but also do it without much distortion, with a much better stego-image quality, in a reliable and secured manner, guaranteeing efficient retrieval of secret message. A comparative performance study between the classical Least Significant Bit (LSB) method, the data hiding technique using Fibonacci -p-Sequence decomposition and our proposed schemes has been done. Theoretical analysis indicates that image quality of the stego-image hidden by the technique using Fibonacci decomposition improves against simple LSB substitution method, while the same using the prime decomposition method improves drastically against that using Fibonacci decomposition technique, and finally the natural number decomposition method is a further improvement against that using prime decomposition technique. Also, optimality for the last technique is proved. For both of our data-hiding techniques, the experimental results show that, the stego-image is visually indistinguishable from the original cover image.

A Concurrent Fuzzy-Neural Network Approach for Decision Support Systems

Decision-making is a process of choosing among alternative courses of action for solving complicated problems where multi-criteria objectives are involved. The past few years have witnessed a growing recognition of Soft Computing technologies that underlie the conception, design and utilization of intelligent systems. Several works have been done where engineers and scientists have applied intelligent techniques and heuristics to obtain optimal decisions from imprecise information. In this paper, we present a concurrent fuzzy-neural network approach combining unsupervised and supervised learning techniques to develop the Tactical Air Combat Decision Support System (TACDSS). Experiment results clearly demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed technique.

Analysis of Hybrid Soft and Hard Computing Techniques for Forex Monitoring Systems

In a universe with a single currency, there would be no foreign exchange market, no foreign exchange rates, and no foreign exchange. Over the past twenty-five years, the way the market has performed those tasks has changed enormously. The need for intelligent monitoring systems has become a necessity to keep track of the complex forex market. The vast currency market is a foreign concept to the average individual. However, once it is broken down into simple terms, the average individual can begin to understand the foreign exchange market and use it as a financial instrument for future investing. In this paper, we attempt to compare the performance of hybrid soft computing and hard computing techniques to predict the average monthly forex rates one month ahead. The soft computing models considered are a neural network trained by the scaled conjugate gradient algorithm and a neuro-fuzzy model implementing a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy inference system. We also considered Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS), Classification and Regression Trees (CART) and a hybrid CART-MARS technique. We considered the exchange rates of Australian dollar with respect to US dollar, Singapore dollar, New Zealand dollar, Japanese yen and United Kingdom pounds. The models were trained using 70% of the data and remaining was used for testing and validation purposes. It is observed that the proposed hybrid models could predict the forex rates more accurately than all the techniques when applied individually. Empirical results also reveal that the hybrid hard computing approach also improved some of our previous work using a neuro-fuzzy approach.

EvoNF: A Framework for Optimization of Fuzzy Inference Systems Using Neural Network Learning and Evolutionary Computation

Several adaptation techniques have been investigated to optimize fuzzy inference systems. Neural network learning algorithms have been used to determine the parameters of fuzzy inference system. Such models are often called as integrated neuro-fuzzy models. In an integrated neuro-fuzzy model there is no guarantee that the neural network learning algorithm converges and the tuning of fuzzy inference system will be successful. Success of evolutionary search procedures for optimization of fuzzy inference system is well proven and established in many application areas. In this paper, we will explore how the optimization of fuzzy inference systems could be further improved using a meta-heuristic approach combining neural network learning and evolutionary computation. The proposed technique could be considered as a methodology to integrate neural networks, fuzzy inference systems and evolutionary search procedures. We present the theoretical frameworks and some experimental results to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed technique.

Optimization of Evolutionary Neural Networks Using Hybrid Learning Algorithms

Evolutionary artificial neural networks (EANNs) refer to a special class of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in which evolution is another fundamental form of adaptation in addition to learning. Evolutionary algorithms are used to adapt the connection weights, network architecture and learning algorithms according to the problem environment. Even though evolutionary algorithms are well known as efficient global search algorithms, very often they miss the best local solutions in the complex solution space. In this paper, we propose a hybrid meta-heuristic learning approach combining evolutionary learning and local search methods (using 1st and 2nd order error information) to improve the learning and faster convergence obtained using a direct evolutionary approach. The proposed technique is tested on three different chaotic time series and the test results are compared with some popular neuro-fuzzy systems and a recently developed cutting angle method of global optimization. Empirical results reveal that the proposed technique is efficient in spite of the computational complexity.

Swarms on Continuous Data

While being it extremely important, many Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) systems have the inhability to perform classification and visualization in a continuous basis or to self-organize new data-items into the older ones (evenmore into new labels if necessary), which can be crucial in KDD - Knowledge Discovery, Retrieval and Data Mining Systems (interactive and online forms of Web Applications are just one example). This disadvantge is also present in more recent approaches using Self-Organizing Maps. On the present work, and exploiting past sucesses in recently proposed Stigmergic Ant Systems a robust online classifier is presented, which produces class decisions on a continuous stream data, allowing for continuous mappings. Results show that increasingly better results are achieved, as demonstraded by other authors in different areas. Web Usage Mining Using Artificial Ant Colony Clustering and Genetic Programming

The rapid e-commerce growth has made both business community and customers face a new situation. Due to intense competition on one hand and the customer's option to choose from several alternatives business community has realized the necessity of intelligent marketing strategies and relationship management. Web usage mining attempts to discover useful knowledge from the secondary data obtained from the interactions of the users with the Web. Web usage mining has become very critical for effective Web site management, creating adaptive Web sites, business and support services, personalization, network traffic flow analysis and so on. The study of ant colonies behavior and their self-organizing capabilities is of interest to knowledge retrieval/management and decision support systems sciences, because it provides models of distributed adaptive organization, which are useful to solve difficult optimization, classification, and distributed control problems, among others. In this paper, we propose an ant clustering algorithm to discover Web usage patterns (data clusters) and a linear genetic programming approach to analyze the visitor trends. Empirical results clearly shows that ant colony clustering performs well when compared to a self-organizing map (for clustering Web usage patterns) even though the performance accuracy is not that efficient when comparared to evolutionary-fuzzy clustering (i-miner) approach.
