BTW model with probabilistically nonuniform distribution of particles from the unstable sites

The two dimensional BTW model of SOC, with probabilistically nonuniform distribution of particles among the nearest neighbouring sites, is studied by computer simulation. When the value of height variable of a particular site reaches the critical value (z c = 4), the value of height variable of that site is reduced by four units by distributing four particles among the four nearest neighbouring sites. In this paper, it is considered that, two particles are distributed equally among the two nearest neighbouring sites along X-axis. However, the distribution of other two particles along Y- axis, is probabilistically nonuniform. The variation of spatial average of the height variable with time is studied. In the SOC state, the distribution of avalanche sizes and durations is obtained. The total number of topplings occured during the stipulated time of evolution is also calculated.

Return Probability of a Random walker in continuum with uniformly distributed jump-length

We are studying the motion of a random walker in two and three dimensional continuum with uniformly distributed jump-length. This is different from conventional Lavy flight. In 2D and 3D continuum, a random walker can move in any direction, with equal probability and with any step-length(l) varying randomly between 0 to 1 with equal probability. A random walker, who starts his journey from a particular point (taken as origin), walks through the region, centered around the origin. Here, in this paper, we studied the probability distribution of end-to-end distances and the probability of return for the first time within a circular zone of finite radius, centered about the initial point, of a random walker. We also studied the same when a random walker moves with constant step-length, unity. The probability distribution of the time of first return (within a specified zone) is also studied.

Self-organised criticality in dilute lattice

The variation of z in BTW model in presence of holes (dissipative sites) has been studied. The value of z decreases as the fraction of number of holes increases. Interstingly, it is observed that the variation of the rate of change of z with the fraction of number of holes is different for the two different types of distribution of holes over the lattice. When the holes are randomly distributed over the lattice then the dissipation is more compared to that of the case when the holes are present in the form of a single compact cluster with same fraction. The value of z is less in the first case than that observed in the second case.

Bose - Einstein condensation in arbitrary dimensions

The density of bosonic states are calculated for spinless free massive bosons in generalised d dimensions. The number of bosons are calculated in the lowest energy state. The Bose Einstein condensation was found in generalised d dimensions (on and above d = 3) and the condensation temperature is calculated which is observed to drop abruptly above three dimensions and decreases monotonically as the dimensionalities of the system increases. The rate of fall of the condensation temperature decreases as the dimensionality increases. Interestingly, in the limit of infinite dimensions, the condensation temperature is observed to approach a nonzero finite value.

Onsets of avalanches in the BTW model

The onsets of toppling and dissipation in the BTW model are studied by computer simulation. The distributions of these two onset times and their dependences on the system size are also studied. Simple power law dependences of these two times on the system size are observed and the exponents are estimated. The fluctuation of the average (spatial) height in the subcritical region is studied and observed to increase very rapidly near the SOC point.

Inflection point as a manifestation of tricritical point on the dynamic phase boundary in Ising meanfield dynamics

We studied the dynamical phase transition in kinetic Ising ferromagnet driven by oscillating magnetic field in meanfield approximation. The meanfield differential equation was solved by sixth order Runge-Kutta-Felberg method. We calculated the transition temperature as a function of amplitude and frequency of the oscillating field. This was plotted against field amplitude taking frequency as a parameter. As frequency increases the phase boundary is observed to become inflated. The phase boundary shows an inflection point which separates the nature of the transition. On the dynamic phase boundary a tricritical point (TCP) was found, which separates the nature (continuous/discontinuous) of the dynamic transition across the phase boundary. The inflection point is identified as the TCP and hence a simpler method of determining the position of TCP was found. TCP was observed to shift towards high field for higher frequency. As frequency decreases the dynamic phase boundary is observe to shrink. In the zero frequency limit this boundary shows a tendency to merge to the temperature variation of the coercive field.
