Bourgeois contact structures: tightness, fillability and applications

Given a contact structure on a manifold VV together with a supporting open book decomposition, Bourgeois gave an explicit construction of a contact structure on V×T2V \times \mathbb{T}^2. We prove that all such structures are universally tight in dimension 55, independent on whether the original contact manifold is itself tight or overtwisted. In arbitrary dimensions, we provide obstructions to the existence of strong symplectic fillings of Bourgeois manifolds. This gives a broad class of new examples of weakly but not strongly fillable contact 55-manifolds, as well as the first examples of weakly but not strongly fillable contact structures in all odd dimensions. These obstructions are particular instances of more general obstructions for S1\mathbb S^1-invariant contact manifolds. We also obtain a classification result in arbitrary dimensions, namely that the unit cotangent bundle of the nn-torus has a unique symplectically aspherical strong filling up to diffeomorphism.

Global hypersurfaces of section in the spatial restricted three-body problem

We propose a contact-topological approach to the spatial circular restricted three-body problem, for energies below and slightly above the first critical energy value. We prove the existence of a circle family of global hypersurfaces of section for the regularized dynamics. Below the first critical value, these hypersurfaces are diffeomorphic to the unit disk cotangent bundle of the 22-sphere, and they carry symplectic forms on their interior, which are each deformation equivalent to the standard symplectic form. The boundary of the global hypersurface of section is an invariant set for the regularized dynamics that is equal to a level set of the Hamiltonian describing the regularized planar problem. The first return map is Hamiltonian, and restricts to the boundary as the time-11 map of a positive reparametrization of the Reeb flow in the planar problem. This construction holds for any choice of mass ratio, and is therefore non-perturbative. We illustrate the technique in the completely integrable case of the rotating Kepler problem, where the return map can be studied explicitly.

On GIT quotients of the symplectic group, stability and bifurcations of symmetric orbits

We provide topological obstructions to the existence of orbit cylinders of symmetric orbits, for mechanical systems preserved by antisymplectic involutions (e.g. the restricted three-body problem). Such cylinders induce continuous paths which do not cross the bifurcation locus of suitable GIT quotients of the symplectic group, which are branched manifolds whose topology provide the desired obstructions. Namely, the complement of the corresponding loci consist of several connected components which we enumerate and explicitly describe; by construction these cannot be joined by a path induced by an orbit cylinder. Our construction extends the notions from Krein theory (which only applies for elliptic orbits), to allow also for the case of symmetric orbits which are hyperbolic. This gives a general theoretical framework for the study of stability and bifurcations of symmetric orbits, with a view towards practical and numerical implementations within the context of space mission design. We shall explore this in upcoming work.

Planarity in higher-dimensional contact manifolds

We obtain several results for (iterated) planar contact manifolds in higher dimensions: (1) Iterated planar contact manifolds are not weakly symplectically semi-fillable. This generalizes a 3-dimensional result of Etnyre to a higher-dimensional setting. (2) They do not arise as nonseparating weak contact-type hypersurfaces in closed symplectic manifolds. This generalizes a result by Albers-Bramham-Wendl. (3) They satisfy the Weinstein conjecture, i.e. every contact form admits a closed Reeb orbit. This is proved by an alternative approach as that of [Acu], and is a higher-dimensional generalization of a result of Abbas-Cieliebak-Hofer. The results follow as applications from a suitable symplectic handle attachment, which bears some independent interest.

SFT computations and intersection theory in higher-dimensional contact manifolds

We construct infinitely many non-diffeomorphic examples of 55-dimensional contact manifolds which are tight, admit no strong fillings, and do not have Giroux torsion. We obtain obstruction results for symplectic cobordisms, for which we give a proof not relying on the polyfold abstract perturbation scheme for SFT. These results are part of the author's PhD thesis, and are the first applications of higher-dimensional Siefring intersection theory for holomorphic curves and hypersurfaces.

Algebraic Torsion in higher-dimensional contact manifolds

We construct examples in any odd dimension of contact manifolds with finite and non-zero algebraic torsion (in the sense of Latschev-Wendl), which are therefore tight and do not admit strong symplectic fillings. We prove that Giroux torsion implies algebraic 11-torsion in any odd dimension, which proves a conjecture by Massot-Niederkrueger-Wendl. We construct infinitely many non-diffeomorphic examples of 55-dimensional contact manifolds which are tight, admit no strong fillings, and do not have Giroux torsion. We obtain obstruction results for symplectic cobordisms, for which we give a proof not relying on SFT machinery. We give a tentative definition of a higher-dimensional spinal open book decomposition, based on the 33-dimensional one of Lisi-van Horn Morris-Wendl. An appendix written in co-authorship with Richard Siefring gives a basic outline of the intersection theory for punctured holomorphic curves and hypersurfaces, which generalizes his 33-dimensional results of Siefring to higher dimensions. From the intersection theory we obtain an application to codimension-22 holomorphic foliations, which we use to restrict the behaviour of holomorphic curves in our examples.
