Combinatorial Perspectives on the Crank and Mex Partition Statistics

Several authors have recently considered the smallest positive part missing from an integer partition, known as the minimum excludant or mex. In this work, we revisit and extend connections between Dyson's crank statistics, the mex, and Frobenius symbols, with a focus on combinatorial proof techniques. One highlight is a generating function expression for the number of partitions with a bounded crank that does not include an alternating sum. This leads to a combinatorial interpretation involving types of Durfee rectangles.

Overpartitions related to the mock theta function $ω(q)$

It was recently shown that $qω(q)$, where $ω(q)$ is one of the third order mock theta functions, is the generating function of $p_ω(n)$, the number of partitions of a positive integer $n$ such that all odd parts are less than twice the smallest part. In this paper, we study the overpartition analogue of $p_ω(n)$, and express its generating function in terms of a ${}_3ϕ_{2}$ basic hypergeometric series and an infinite series involving little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. This is accomplished by obtaining a new seven parameter $q$-series identity which generalizes a deep identity due to the first author as well as its generalization by R.P.~Agarwal. We also derive two interesting congruences satisfied by the overpartition analogue, and some congruences satisfied by the associated smallest parts function.

Partitions associated with the Ramanujan/Watson mock theta functions $ω(q), ν(q)$ and $ϕ(q)$

The generating function of partitions with repeated (resp. distinct) parts such that each odd part is less than twice the smallest part is shown to be the third order mock theta function $ω(q)$ (resp. $ν(-q)$). Similar results for partitions with the corresponding restriction on each even part are also obtained, one of which involves the third order mock theta function $ϕ(q)$. Congruences for the smallest parts functions associated to such partitions are obtained. Two analogues of the partition-theoretic interpretation of Euler's pentagonal theorem are also obtained.

Euler's Partition Theorem with Upper Bounds on Multiplicities

We show that the number of partitions of n with alternating sum k such that the multiplicity of each part is bounded by 2m+1 equals the number of partitions of n with k odd parts such that the multiplicity of each even part is bounded by m. The first proof relies on two formulas with two parameters that are related to the four-parameter formulas of Boulet. We also give a combinatorial proof of this result by using Sylvester's bijection, which implies a stronger partition theorem. For m=0, our result reduces to Bessenrodt's refinement of Euler's Theorem. If the alternating sum and the number of odd parts are not taken into account, we are led to a connection to a generalization of Euler's theorem, which can be deduced from a theorem of Andrews on equivalent upper bound sequences of multiplicities. Analogously, we show that the number of partitions of n with alternating sum k such that the multiplicity of each even part is bounded by 2m+1 equals the number of partitions of n with k odd parts such that the multiplicity of each even part is also bounded by 2m+1. We provide a combinatorial proof as well.

Generalized higher order spt-functions

We give a new generalization of the spt-function of G.E. Andrews, namely $\textup{Spt}_j(n)$, and give its combinatorial interpretation in terms of successive lower-Durfee squares. We then generalize the higher order spt-function $\textup{spt}_k(n)$, due to F.G. Garvan, to ${}_j\textup{spt}_{k}(n)$, thus providing a two-fold generalization of $\textup{spt}(n)$, and give its combinatorial interpretation.
