The δδ-invariant theory of Hecke correspondences on Ag\mathcal A_g

Let pp be a prime, let N≥3N\geq 3 be an integer prime to pp, let RR be the ring of pp-typical Witt vectors with coefficients in an algebraic closure of Fp\mathbb F_p, and consider the correspondence Ag,1,N,R′⇉Ag,1,N,R\mathcal A'_{g,1,N,R}\rightrightarrows \mathcal A_{g,1,N,R} obtained by taking the union of all prime to pp Hecke correspondences on Mumford's moduli scheme of principally polarized abelian schemes of relative dimension gg endowed with symplectic similitude level-NN structure over RR-schemes. It is well-known that the coequalizer Ag,1,N,R/Ag,1,N,R′\mathcal A_{g,1,N,R}/\mathcal A'_{g,1,N,R} of the above correspondence exists and is trivial in the category of schemes, i.e., is Spec(R)\text{Spec}(R). We construct and study in detail such a coequalizer (categorical quotient) in a more refined geometry (category) referred to as {\it δδ-geometry}. This geometry is in essence obtained from the usual algebraic geometry by equipping all RR-algebras with {\it pp-derivations}. In particular, we prove that our substitute of Ag,1,N,R/Ag,1,N,R′\mathcal A_{g,1,N,R}/\mathcal A'_{g,1,N,R} in δδ-geometry has the same `dimension' as Ag,1,N,R\mathcal A_{g,1,N,R}, thus solving a main open problem in the work of Barcău--Buium. We also give applications to the study of various Zariski dense loci in Ag,1,N,R\mathcal A_{g,1,N,R} such as of isogeny classes and of points with complex multiplication. To prove our results we develop a Serre--Tate expansion theory for {\it Siegel δδ-modular forms} of arbitrary genus which we then combine with old and new results from the geometric invariant theory of multiple quadratic forms and of multiple endomorphisms.

Purity for Barsotti-Tate groups in some mixed characteristic situations

Let pp be a prime. Let RR be a regular local ring of dimension d≥2d\ge 2 whose completion is isomorphic to C(k)x1,…,xd/(h)C(k)x_1,\ldots,x_d/(h), with C(k)C(k) a Cohen ring with the same residue field kk as RR and with h∈C(k)x1,…,xdh\in C(k)x_1,\ldots,x_d such that its reduction modulo pp does not belong to the ideal (x1p,…,xdp)+(x1,…,xd)2p−2(x_1^p,\ldots,x_d^p)+(x_1,\ldots,x_d)^{2p-2} of kx1,…,xdkx_1,\ldots,x_d. We extend a result of Vasiu-Zink (for d=2d=2) to show that each Barsotti-Tate group over Frac(R)\text{Frac}(R) which extends to every local ring of Spec(R)\text{Spec}(R) of dimension 11, extends uniquely to a Barsotti-Tate group over RR. This result corrects in many cases several errors in the literature. As an application, we get that if YY is a regular integral scheme such that the completion of each local ring of YY of residue characteristic pp is a formal power series ring over some complete discrete valuation ring of absolute ramification index e≤p−1e\le p-1, then each Barsotti-Tate group over the generic point of YY which extends to every local ring of YY of dimension 11, extends uniquely to a Barsotti-Tate group over YY.

A motivic conjecture of Milne

Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0. Let W(k) be the ring of Witt vectors with coefficients in k. We prove a motivic conjecture of Milne that relates, in the case of abelian schemes, the étale cohomology with $\dbZ_p$ coefficients to the crystalline cohomology with integral coefficients, in the more general context of p-divisible groups endowed with {\it arbitrary} families of crystalline tensors over a finite, discrete valuation ring extension of W(k). This extends a result of Faltings in [Fa2]. As a main new tool we construct global deformations of p-divisible groups endowed with crystalline tensors over certain regular, formally smooth schemes over W(k) whose special fibers over k have a Zariski dense set of k-valued points.

Boundedness results for finite flat group schemes over discrete valuation rings of mixed characteristic

Let pp be a prime. Let VV be a discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic (0,p)(0,p) and index of ramification ee. Let f:G→Hf: G \rightarrow H be a homomorphism of finite flat commutative group schemes of pp power order over VV whose generic fiber is an isomorphism. We provide a new proof of a result of Bondarko and Liu that bounds the kernel and the cokernel of the special fiber of ff in terms of ee. For e<p−1e < p-1 this reproves a result of Raynaud. Our bounds are sharper that the ones of Liu, are almost as sharp as the ones of Bondarko, and involve a very simple and short method. As an application we obtain a new proof of an extension theorem for homomorphisms of truncated Barsotti--Tate groups which strengthens Tate's extension theorem for homomorphisms of pp-divisible groups.

Dimensions of group schemes of automorphisms of truncated Barsotti--Tate groups

Let DD be a pp-divisible group over an algebraically closed field kk of characteristic p>0p>0. Let nDn_D be the smallest non-negative integer such that DD is determined by D[pnD]D[p^{n_D}] within the class of pp-divisible groups over kk of the same codimension cc and dimension dd as DD. We study nDn_D, lifts of D[pm]D[p^m] to truncated Barsotti--Tate groups of level m+1m+1 over kk, and the numbers γD(i):=dim⁡(Aut(D[pi]))γ_D(i):=\dim(\pmb{Aut}(D[p^i])). We show that nD≤cdn_D\le cd, (γD(i+1)−γD(i))i∈N(γ_D(i+1)-γ_D(i))_{i\in\Bbb N} is a decreasing sequence in N\Bbb N, for cd>0cd>0 we have γD(1)<γD(2)<...<γD(nD)γ_D(1)<γ_D(2)<...<γ_D(n_D), and for m∈{1,...,nD−1}m\in\{1,...,n_D-1\} there exists an infinite set of truncated Barsotti--Tate groups of level m+1m+1 which are pairwise non-isomorphic and lift D[pm]D[p^m]. Different generalizations to pp-divisible groups with a smooth integral group scheme in the crystalline context are also proved.

Generalized Serre--Tate Ordinary Theory

We study a generalization of Serre--Tate theory of ordinary abelian varieties and their deformation spaces. This generalization deals with abelian varieties equipped with additional structures. The additional structures can be not only an action of a semisimple algebra and a polarization, but more generally the data given by some ``crystalline Hodge cycles (a pp-adic version of a Hodge cycle in the sense of motives). Compared to Serre--Tate ordinary theory, new phenomena appear in this generalized context. We give an application of this theory to the existence of ``good integral models of those Shimura varieties whose adjoints are products of simple, adjoint Shimura varieties of DlHD_l^{\bf H} type with l≥4l\ge 4.

Integral models in unramified mixed characteristic (0,2) of hermitian orthogonal Shimura varieties of PEL type, Part I

Let (G,X)(G,X) be a Shimura variety of PEL type such that GQ2G_{{\bf Q}_2} is a split GSO2n{\bf GSO}_{2n} group with n≥2n\ge 2. We prove the existence of the integral canonical models of Sh(G,X)/H2{\rm Sh}(G,X)/H_2 in unramified mixed characteristic (0,2)(0,2), where H2H_2 is a hyperspecial subgroup of G(Q2)G({\bf Q}_2).

On the Tate and Langlands--Rapoport conjectures for special fibres of integral canonical models of Shimura varieties of abelian type

We prove the isogeny property for special fibres of integral canonical models of compact Shimura varieties of AnA_n, BnB_n, CnC_n, and $D_n^{\dbR}$ type. The approach used also shows that many crystalline cycles on abelian varieties over finite fields which are specializations of Hodge cycles, are algebraic. These two results have many applications. First, we prove a variant of the conditional Langlands--Rapoport conjecture for these special fibres. Second, for certain isogeny sets we prove a variant of the unconditional Langlands--Rapoport conjecture (like for many basic loci). Third, we prove that integral canonical models of compact Shimura varieties of Hodge type that are of AnA_n, BnB_n, CnC_n, and $D_n^{\dbR}$ type, are closed subschemes of integral canonical models of Siegel modular varieties.

Stratifications of Newton polygon strata and Traverso's conjectures for p-divisible groups

The isomorphism number (resp. isogeny cutoff) of a p-divisible group D over an algebraically closed field is the least positive integer m such that D[p^m] determines D up to isomorphism (resp. up to isogeny). We show that these invariants are lower semicontinuous in families of p-divisible groups of constant Newton polygon. Thus they allow refinements of Newton polygon strata. In each isogeny class of p-divisible groups, we determine the maximal value of isogeny cutoffs and give an upper bound for isomorphism numbers, which is shown to be optimal in the isoclinic case. In particular, the latter disproves a conjecture of Traverso. As an application, we answer a question of Zink on the liftability of an endomorphism of D[p^m] to D.

Manin problems for Shimura varieties of Hodge type

Let k be a perfect field of characteristic p>0. We prove the existence of ascending and descending slope filtrations for Shimura p-divisible objects over k. We use them to classify rationally these objects over \bar k. Among geometric applications, we mention two. First we formulate Manin problems for Shimura varieties of Hodge type. We solve them if either p\Ge 3 or p=2 and two mild conditions hold. Second we formulate integral Manin problems. We solve them for certain Shimura varieties of PEL type.

Deformation subspaces of p-divisible groups as formal Lie groups associated to p-divisible groups

Let kk be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0p>0. Let DD be a pp-divisible group over kk which is not isoclinic. Let $\scrD$ (resp. $\scrD_k$) be the formal deformation space of DD over $\Spf(W(k))$ (resp. over $\Spf(k)$). We use axioms to construct formal subschemes $\scrG_k$ of $\scrD_k$ that: (i) have canonical structures of formal Lie groups over $\Spf(k)$ associated to pp-divisible groups over kk, and (ii) give birth, via all geometric points $\Spf(K)\to\scrG_k$, to pp-divisible groups over KK that are isomorphic to DKD_K. We also identify when there exist formal subschemes $\scrG$ of $\scrD$ which lift $\scrG_k$ and which have natural structures of formal Lie groups over $\Spf(W(k))$ associated to pp-divisible groups over W(k)W(k). Applications to Traverso (ultimate) stratifications are included as well.

Mod p classification of Shimura F-crystals

Let kk be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic pp. We first classify the DD-truncations mod pp of Shimura FF-crystals over kk and then we study stratifications defined by inner isomorphism classes of these DD-truncations. This generalizes previous works of Kraft, Ekedahl, Oort, Moonen, and Wedhorn. As a main tool we introduce and study Bruhat FF-decompositions; they generalize the combined form of Steinberg theorem and of classical Bruhat decompositions for reductive groups over kk.

Purity of level m stratifications

Let kk be a field of characteristic p>0p>0. Let DmD_m be a $\BT_m$ over kk (i.e., an mm-truncated Barsotti--Tate group over kk). Let SS be a\break kk-scheme and let XX be a $\BT_m$ over SS. Let SDm(X)S_{D_m}(X) be the subscheme of SS which describes the locus where XX is locally for the fppf topology isomorphic to DmD_m. If p≥5p\ge 5, we show that SDm(X)S_{D_m}(X) is pure in SS i.e., the immersion SDm(X)↪SS_{D_m}(X) \hookrightarrow S is affine. For p∈{2,3}p\in\{2,3\}, we prove purity if DmD_m satisfies a certain property depending only on its pp-torsion Dm[p]D_m[p]. For p≥5p\ge 5, we apply the developed techniques to show that all level mm stratifications associated to Shimura varieties of Hodge type are pure.

Purity results for pp-divisible groups and abelian schemes over regular bases of mixed characteristic

Let pp be a prime. Let $(R,\ideal{m})$ be a regular local ring of mixed characteristic (0,p)(0,p) and absolute index of ramification ee. We provide general criteria of when each abelian scheme over $\Spec R\setminus\{\ideal{m}\}$ extends to an abelian scheme over $\Spec R$. We show that such extensions always exist if e≤p−1e\le p-1, exist in most cases if p≤e≤2p−3p\le e\le 2p-3, and do not exist in general if e≥2p−2e\ge 2p-2. The case e≤p−1e\le p-1 implies the uniqueness of integral canonical models of Shimura varieties over a discrete valuation ring OO of mixed characteristic (0,p)(0,p) and index of ramification at most p−1p-1. This leads to large classes of examples of Néron models over OO. If p>2p>2 and index p−1p-1, the examples are new.

Breuil's classification of pp-divisible groups over regular local rings of arbitrary dimension

Let kk be a perfect field of characteristic p≥3p \geq 3. We classify pp-divisible groups over regular local rings of the form W(k)t1,...,tr,u/(ue+pbe−1ue−1+...+pb1u+pb0)W(k)t_1,...,t_r,u/(u^e+pb_{e-1}u^{e-1}+...+pb_1u+pb_0), where b0,...,be−1∈W(k)t1,...,trb_0,...,b_{e-1}\in W(k)t_1,...,t_r and b0b_0 is an invertible element. This classification was in the case r=0r = 0 conjectured by Breuil and proved by Kisin.

Reconstructing pp-divisible groups from their truncations of small level

Let kk be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0p>0. Let DD be a pp-divisible group over kk. Let nDn_D be the smallest non-negative integer for which the following statement holds: if CC is a pp-divisible group over kk of the same codimension and dimension as DD and such that C[pnD]C[p^{n_D}] is isomorphic to D[pnD]D[p^{n_D}], then CC is isomorphic to DD. To the Dieudonné module of DD we associate a non-negative integer ℓD\ell_D which is a computable upper bound of nDn_D. If DD is a product ∏i∈IDi\prod_{i\in I} D_i of isoclinic pp-divisible groups, we show that nD=ℓDn_D=\ell_D; if the set II has at least two elements we also show that nD≤max⁡{1,nDi,nDi+nDj−1∣i,j∈I,j≠i}n_D\le\max\{1,n_{D_i},n_{D_i}+n_{D_j}-1|i,j\in I, j\neq i\}. We show that we have $n_D\Le 1$ if and only if $\ell_D\Le 1$; this recovers the classification of minimal pp-divisible groups obtained by Oort. If DD is quasi-special, we prove the Traverso truncation conjecture for DD. If DD is FF-cyclic, we compute explicitly nDn_D. Many results are proved in the general context of latticed FF-isocrystals with a (certain) group over kk.

Level m stratifications of versal deformations of p-divisible groups

Let kk be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0p>0. Let c,d,mc,d,m be positive integers. Let DD be a pp-divisible group of codimension cc and dimension dd over kk. Let $\scrD$ be a versal deformation of DD over a smooth kk-scheme $\scrA$ which is equidimensional of dimension cdcd. We show that there exists a reduced, locally closed subscheme $\grs_D(m)$ of $\scrA$ that has the following property: a point $y\in\scrA(k)$ belongs to $\grs_D(m)(k)$ if and only if $y^*(\scrD)[p^m]$ is isomorphic to D[pm]D[p^m]. We prove that $\grs_D(m)$ is {\it regular and equidimensional} of {\it dimension} cd−dim⁡(Aut(D[pm]))cd-\dim(\pmb{\text{Aut}}(D[p^m])). We give a proof of {\it Traverso's formula} which for m>>0m>>0 computes the codimension of $\grs_D(m)$ in $\scrA$ (i.e., dim⁡(Aut(D[pm]))\dim(\pmb{\text{Aut}}(D[p^m]))) in terms of the Newton polygon of DD. We also provide a criterion of when $\grs_D(m)$ satisfies the {\it purity property} (i.e., it is an affine $\scrA$-scheme). Similar results are proved for {\it quasi Shimura pp-varieties of Hodge type} that generalize the special fibres of good integral models of Shimura varieties of Hodge type in unramified mixed characteristic (0,p)(0,p).
