Constraining non-commutative space-time from GW150914

The gravitational wave signal GW150914, recently detected by LIGO and Virgo collaborations, is used to place a bound on the scale of quantum fuzziness of non-commutative space-time. We show that the leading non-commutative correction to the phase of the gravitational waves produced by a binary system appears at the 2nd order of the post- Newtonian expansion. This correction is proportional to $Λ^2 \equiv |θ^{0i}|^2/(l_P t_P)^2$, where $θ^{μν}$ is the antisymmetric tensor of non-commutativity. To comply with GW150914 data, we find that $\sqrtΛ \lesssim 6$, namely less than one order of magnitude above the Planck scale. This is the most stringent bound on non-commutative scale, exceeding the previous constraints from particle physics processes by $\sim 15$ orders of magnitude.

Fermions in Rotating Reference Frames

Current quantisations of fermions in cylindrical coordinates are shown to be inadequate in calculating some single-particle expectation values. This paper develops an alternate quantisation, applicable to one-particle states, which is generalised to rotating frames in cylindrical coordinates. Using this quantization, an explicit calculation of the velocity of a flat space free fermion as observed by a rotating observer is presented. This calculation demonstrates the validity of this quantisation and the cancellation of non-inertial rotational effects in the velocity, naively expected from the mixing of particle and anti-particle field operators.

Observable Zitterbewegung in Curved Spacetimes

Zitterbewegung, as it was originally described by Schrödinger, is an unphysical, non-observable effect. We verify whether the effect can be observed in non-inertial reference frames/curved spacetimes, where the ambiguity in defining particle states results in a mixing of positive and negative frequency modes. We explicitly demonstrate that such a mixing is in fact necessary to obtain the correct classical value for a particle's velocity in a uniformly accelerated reference frame, whereas in cosmological spacetime a particle does indeed exhibit Zitterbewegung.

Scale-Invariant Models with One-Loop Neutrino Mass and Dark Matter Candidates

We construct a list of minimal scale-invariant models at the TeV scale that generate one-loop neutrino mass and give viable dark matter candidates. The models generically contain a singlet scalar and a $Z_2$-odd sector comprised of singlet, doublet and/or triplet SU(2) multiplets. The dark matter may reside in a single multiplet or arise as an admixture of several multiplets. We find fifteen independent models, for which the dark matter is a viable candidate and neutrino mass results from a diagram with just one of the irreducible scale-invariant one-loop topologies. Further "non-pure" cases give hybrid one-/two-loop masses. All models predict new TeV scale physics, including a singlet scalar that generically mixes with the Higgs boson.
