Combinatorial two-stage minmax regret problems under interval uncertainty

In this paper a class of combinatorial optimization problems is discussed. It is assumed that a feasible solution can be constructed in two stages. In the first stage the objective function costs are known while in the second stage they are uncertain and belong to an interval uncertainty set. In order to choose a solution, the minmax regret criterion is used. Some general properties of the problem are established and results for two particular problems, namely the shortest path and the selection problem, are shown.

Robust production planning with budgeted cumulative demand uncertainty

This paper deals with a problem of production planning, which is a version of the capacitated single-item lot sizing problem with backordering under demand uncertainty, modeled by uncertain cumulative demands. The well-known interval budgeted uncertainty representation is assumed. Two of its variants are considered. The first one is the discrete budgeted uncertainty, in which at most a specified number of cumulative demands can deviate from their nominal values at the same time. The second variant is the continuous budgeted uncertainty, in which the sum of the deviations of cumulative demands from their nominal values, at the same time, is at most a bound on the total deviation provided. For both cases, in order to choose a production plan that hedges against the cumulative demand uncertainty, the robust minmax criterion is used. Polynomial algorithms for evaluating the impact of uncertainty in the demand on a given production plan in terms of its cost, called the adversarial problem, and for finding robust production plans under the discrete budgeted uncertainty are constructed. Hence, in this case, the problems under consideration are not much computationally harder than their deterministic counterparts. For the continuous budgeted uncertainty, it is shown that the adversarial problem and the problem of computing a robust production plan along with its worst-case cost are NP-hard. In the case, when uncertainty intervals are non-overlapping, they can be solved in pseudopolynomial time and admit fully polynomial timeapproximation schemes. In the general case, a decomposition algorithm for finding a robust plan is proposed.

Soft robust solutions to possibilistic optimization problems

This paper discusses a class of uncertain optimization problems, in which unknown parameters are modeled by fuzzy intervals. The membership functions of the fuzzy intervals are interpreted as possibility distributions for the values of the uncertain parameters. It is shown how the known concepts of robustness and light robustness, for the interval uncertainty representation of the parameters, can be generalized to choose solutions under the assumed model of uncertainty in the possibilistic setting. Furthermore, these solutions can be computed efficiently for a wide class of problems, in particular for linear programming problems with fuzzy parameters in constraints and objective function. In this paper a theoretical framework is presented and results of some computational tests are shown.

Recoverable robust spanning tree problem under interval uncertainty representations

This paper deals with the recoverable robust spanning tree problem under interval uncertainty representations. A polynomial time, combinatorial algorithm for the recoverable spanning tree problem is first constructed. This problem generalizes the incremental spanning tree problem, previously discussed in literature. The algorithm built is then applied to solve the recoverable robust spanning tree problem, under the traditional interval uncertainty representation, in polynomial time. Moreover, the algorithm allows to obtain, under some mild assumptions about the uncertainty intervals, several approximation results for the recoverable robust spanning tree problem under the Bertsimas and Sim interval uncertainty representation and the interval uncertainty representation with a budget constraint.

The robust recoverable spanning tree problem with interval costs is polynomially solvable

In this paper the robust recoverable spanning tree problem with interval edge costs is considered. The complexity of this problem has remained open to date. It is shown that the problem is polynomially solvable, by using an iterative relaxation method. A generalization of this idea to the robust recoverable matroid basis problem is also presented. Polynomial algorithms for both robust recoverable problems are proposed.

Using the WOWA operator in robust discrete optimization problems

In this paper a class of discrete optimization problems with uncertain costs is discussed. The uncertainty is modeled by introducing a scenario set containing a finite number of cost scenarios. A probability distribution in the scenario set is available. In order to choose a solution the weighted OWA criterion (WOWA) is applied. This criterion allows decision makers to take into account both probabilities for scenarios and the degree of pessimism/ optimism. In this paper the complexity of the considered class of discrete optimization problems is described and some exact and approximation algorithms for solving it are proposed. An application to a selection problem, together with results of computational tests are shown.

Approximability of the robust representatives selection problem

In this paper new complexity and approximation results on the robust versions of the representatives selection problem, under the scenario uncertainty representation, are provided, which extend the results obtained in the recent papers by Dolgui and Kovalev (2012), and Deineko and Woeginger (2013). Namely, it is shown that if the number of scenarios is a part of input, then the min-max (regret) representatives selection problem is not approximable within a ratio of $O(\log^{1-ε}K)$ for any $ε>0$, where $K$ is the number of scenarios, unless the problems in NP have quasi-polynomial time algorithms. An approximation algorithm with an approximation ratio of $O(\log K/ \log \log K)$ for the min-max version of the problem is also provided.

Combinatorial optimization problems with uncertain costs and the OWA criterion

In this paper a class of combinatorial optimization problems with uncertain costs is discussed. The uncertainty is modeled by specifying a discrete scenario set containing $K$ distinct cost scenarios. The Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA for short) aggregation operator is applied to choose a solution. The well-known criteria such as: the maximum, minimum, average, Hurwicz and median are special cases of OWA. By using OWA, the traditional min-max approach to combinatorial optimization problems with uncertain costs, often regarded as too conservative, can be generalized. The computational complexity and approximability of the problem of minimizing OWA for the considered class of problems are investigated and some new positive and negative results in this area are provided. These results remain valid for many important problems, such as network or resource allocation problems.

Complexity of the robust weighted independent set problems on interval graphs

This paper deals with the max-min and min-max regret versions of the maximum weighted independent set problem on interval graphswith uncertain vertex weights. Both problems have been recently investigated by Nobibon and Leus (2014), who showed that they are NP-hard for two scenarios and strongly NP-hard if the number of scenarios is a part of the input. In this paper, new complexity and approximation results on the problems under consideration are provided, which extend the ones previously obtained. Namely, for the discrete scenario uncertainty representation it is proven that if the number of scenarios $K$ is a part of the input, then the max-min version of the problem is not at all approximable. On the other hand, its min-max regret version is approximable within $K$ and not approximable within $O(\log^{1-ε}K)$ for any $ε>0$ unless the problems in NP have quasi polynomial algorithms. Furthermore, for the interval uncertainty representation it is shown that the min-max regret version is NP-hard and approximable within 2.

Single machine scheduling problems with uncertain parameters and the OWA criterion

In this paper a class of single machine scheduling problems is discussed. It is assumed that job parameters, such as processing times, due dates, or weights are uncertain and their values are specified in the form of a discrete scenario set. The Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) aggregation operator is used to choose an optimal schedule. The OWA operator generalizes traditional criteria in decision making under uncertainty, such as the maximum, average, median or Hurwicz criterion. It also allows us to extend the robust approach to scheduling by taking into account various attitudes of decision makers towards the risk. In this paper a general framework for solving single machine scheduling problems with the OWA criterion is proposed and some positive and negative computational results for two basic single machine scheduling problems are provided.

Bottleneck combinatorial optimization problems with uncertain costs and the OWA criterion

In this paper a class of bottleneck combinatorial optimization problems with uncertain costs is discussed. The uncertainty is modeled by specifying a discrete scenario set containing a finite number of cost vectors, called scenarios. In order to choose a solution the Ordered Weighted Averaging aggregation operator (shortly OWA) is applied. The OWA operator generalizes traditional criteria in decision making under uncertainty such as the maximum, minimum, average, median, or Hurwicz criterion. New complexity and approximation results in this area are provided. These results are general and remain valid for many problems, in particular for a wide class of network problems.

On the approximability of robust spanning tree problems

In this paper the minimum spanning tree problem with uncertain edge costs is discussed. In order to model the uncertainty a discrete scenario set is specified and a robust framework is adopted to choose a solution. The min-max, min-max regret and 2-stage min-max versions of the problem are discussed. The complexity and approximability of all these problems are explored. It is proved that the min-max and min-max regret versions with nonnegative edge costs are hard to approximate within $O(\log^{1-ε} n)$ for any $ε>0$ unless the problems in NP have quasi-polynomial time algorithms. Similarly, the 2-stage min-max problem cannot be approximated within $O(\log n)$ unless the problems in NP have quasi-polynomial time algorithms. In this paper randomized LP-based approximation algorithms with performance ratio of $O(\log^2 n)$ for min-max and 2-stage min-max problems are also proposed.
