Code generation for AMReX with applications to numerical relativity

We present a new python/SymPy based code generator for producing executable numerical expressions for partial differential equations in AMReX-based applications. We demonstrate the code generator capabilities for the case of $3+1$ ADM formulations of numerical relativity for the constraint damped, conformal Z4 formulations (Z4c and CCZ4). The generated spacetime solvers are examined for stability and accuracy using a selection of checks from the standard Apples with Apples testbeds for numerical relativity applications. We also explore physically interesting vacuum spacetimes including head-on and inspiraling black hole binary collisions, and investigate the simulated gravitational waveforms from such events with the Newman-Penrose formulation of waveform extraction.

More on Two-Dimensional $O(N)$ Models with $\mathcal{N} = (0,1)$ Supersymmetry

We study the behavior of two dimensional supersymmetric connections of $n$ copies of $O(N)$ models with an $\mathcal{N} = (0,1)$ heterotic deformation generated by a right moving fermion. We develop the model in analogy with the connected $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ $CP(N-1)$ models for the case of a single connecting fermionic superfield. We calculate the effective potential in the large $N$ limit and determine the vacuum field configurations. Similarily to other SUSY connected models we find that SUSY is unbroken under certain conditions despite the vanishing of the Witten index. Specifically, this preservation of SUSY occurs when we have an even number $n$ of $O(N)$ families. As in previous cases we show that this result follows from a $Z_n$ symmetry under a particular exchange of the $O(N)$ families. This leads to a definition of a modified Witten index, which gaurantees the preservation of SUSY in this case.

Gapless excitations of axially symmetric vortices in systems with tensorial order parameter

We extend the results of previous work on the vortex order parameter in systems similar to the Ginzburg-Landau description of superfluid $^3$He in the bulk B phase. Specifically, we consider vortices preserving an axial $U(1)$ symmetry. We determine the conditions required by the $β_i$ parameters to allow for an energetically favorable development of the off-diagonal antisymmetric and symmetric-traceless elements satisfying the axial symmetry from the trace-only ansatz of the order parameter. The number and type of gapless moduli appearing on the classical low energy theory of axial vortices is determined. The time-dependent part of the Ginzburg-Landau free energy is then considered to determine the number of quantized modes emerging from the gapless moduli fields.

Deformation of the CP(1) model leading to fixed size solitons in 2+1 dimensions

We discuss static particle-like solitons in the 2+1 dimensional CP(1) model with a small mass deformation $m$ preserving a $U(1) \times Z_2$ symmetry in the Lagrangian. Due to the breaking of scale invariance, the energy function becomes a strictly increasing function of the soliton size $ρ$, and therefore no classical finite size solution exists in this model. To remedy this we employ a well known technique of introducing a forth-order derivative term in the Lagrangian to force the soliton action to diverge at small values of $ρ$. With this additional term the action exhibits a stable minimum at fixed size $ρ$.

Low energy dynamics of gapless and quasi-gapless modes of vortices in superfluid $^3$He-B

We discuss the low energy effective dynamics of gapless excitations of the mass vortices of systems similar to the Ginzburg-Landau description of superfluid helium-3 in the bulk B phase. Our approach is to determine the vortex solution by considering a specific ansatz for the order parameter and minimizing the free energy. The conditions on the $β_i$ coefficients required for the stability of the various solutions for the order parameter are calculated. By considering the symmetries that are broken by the vortex solutions we are able to generate the moduli fields associated with the low energy excitations of the vortices. Using these fields we determine the effective free energy describing the dynamics of these excitations.
