Conformal correlators as simplex integrals in momentum space

We find the general solution of the conformal Ward identities for scalar $n$-point functions in momentum space and in general dimension. The solution is given in terms of integrals over $(n-1)$-simplices in momentum space. The $n$ operators are inserted at the $n$ vertices of the simplex, and the momenta running between any two vertices of the simplex are the integration variables. The integrand involves an arbitrary function of momentum-space cross ratios constructed from the integration variables, while the external momenta enter only via momentum conservation at each vertex. Correlators where the function of cross ratios is a monomial exhibit a remarkable recursive structure where $n$-point functions are built in terms of $(n-1)$-point functions. To illustrate our discussion, we derive the simplex representation of $n$-point contact Witten diagrams in a holographic conformal field theory. This can be achieved through both a recursive method, as well as an approach based on the star-mesh transformation of electrical circuit theory. The resulting expression for the function of cross ratios involves $(n-2)$ integrations, which is an improvement (when $n>4$) relative to the Mellin representation that involves $n(n-3)/2$ integrations.

Conformal $n$-point functions in momentum space

We present a Feynman integral representation for the general momentum-space scalar $n$-point function in any conformal field theory. This representation solves the conformal Ward identities and features an arbitrary function of $n(n-3)/2$ variables which play the role of momentum-space conformal cross-ratios. It involves $(n-1)(n-2)/2$ integrations over momenta, with the momenta running over the edges of an $(n-1)$-simplex. We provide the details in the simplest non-trivial case (4-point functions), and for this case we identify values of the operator and spacetime dimensions for which singularities arise leading to anomalies and beta functions, and discuss several illustrative examples from perturbative quantum field theory and holography.

TripleK: A Mathematica package for evaluating triple-K integrals and conformal correlation functions

I present a Mathematica package designed for manipulations and evaluations of triple-K integrals and conformal correlation functions in momentum space. Additionally, the program provides tools for evaluation of a large class of 2- and 3-point massless multi-loop Feynman integrals with generalized propagators. The package is accompanied by five Mathematica notebooks containing detailed calculations of numerous conformal 3-point functions in momentum space.

Wormholes from two-sided $T \bar{T}$-deformation

We introduce a new coupling between stress tensors of the CFTs living on the two boundaries of the BTZ black hole. Similar to the $T \bar{T}$-deformation, the system exhibits universal properties and is solvable. The resulting geometry is an extreme case of a wormhole with the right and left BTZ wedges glued together along the horizons. We show that the geometry is realized by uniform shock waves emanating from both asymptotic boundaries. The construction has profound implications for the structure of the Hilbert space of states of the dual QFT.

Dimensional renormalization in AdS/CFT

In this paper we present a dimensional renormalization scheme suitable for holographic theories. We use the bulk physics in the supergravity limit as a definition of the dual CFT. Similar to the perturbative quantization of a QFT, one is free to choose a convenient renormalization scheme, and the holographic renormalization method is only one such choice. We show how the bulk theory can be rendered finite with a renormalization scheme that corresponds to dimensional renormalization in the dual CFT. The method does not require any cut-offs and does not introduce any dimensionful parameters. It delivers a one-to-one map between bulk and boundary counterterms and leads to an exact and unambiguous identification of field theoretical objects in terms of bulk data. In particular, we resolve long standing issues regarding the identification of the renormalization scale and beta functions on both sides of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Furthermore, the method is considerably simpler than standard holographic renormalization on a practical level when evaluating correlation functions.

Scalar 3-point functions in CFT: renormalisation, beta functions and anomalies

We present a comprehensive discussion of renormalisation of 3-point functions of scalar operators in conformal field theories in general dimension. We have previously shown that conformal symmetry uniquely determines the momentum-space 3-point functions in terms of certain integrals involving a product of three Bessel functions (triple-K integrals). The triple-K integrals diverge when the dimensions of operators satisfy certain relations and we discuss how to obtain renormalised 3-point functions in all cases. There are three different types of divergences: ultralocal, semilocal and nonlocal, and a given divergent triple-K integral may have any combination of them. Ultralocal divergences may be removed using local counterterms and this results in new conformal anomalies. Semilocal divergences may be removed by renormalising the sources, and this results in CFT correlators that satisfy Callan-Symanzik equations with beta functions. In the case of non-local divergences, it is the triple-K representation that is singular, not the 3-point function. Here, the CFT correlator is the coefficient of the leading nonlocal singularity, which satisfies all the expected conformal Ward identities. Such correlators exhibit enhanced symmetry: they are also invariant under dual conformal transformations where the momenta play the role of coordinates. When both anomalies and beta functions are present the correlators exhibit novel analytic structure containing products of logarithms of momenta. We illustrate our discussion with numerous examples, including free field realisations and AdS/CFT computations.

Cosmological singularities encoded in IR boundary correlations

We study the dynamics near big crunch singularities produced in asymptotic AdS cosmologies using gauge/gravity duality. The dual description consists of a constant mass deformation of ABJM theory on de Sitter space and is well-defined and stable for small deformations. We identify the critical deformation where the theory becomes unstable at weak and at strong coupling. Using spacelike geodesics anchored on the boundary we compute two-point correlators of ABJM operators of large dimensions. Near the critical deformation a second saddle point contribution enters, in which the spacelike geodesics probe the high curvature region near the singularity. Its contribution strongly enhances the long-distance correlations. This has a natural interpretation in the weakly coupled boundary theory where the critical point corresponds to a massless limit.

Comments on scale and conformal invariance in four dimensions

There has been recent interest in the question of whether four dimensional scale invariant unitary quantum field theories are actually conformally invariant. In this note we present a complete analysis of possible scale anomalies in correlation functions of the trace of the stress-energy tensor in such theories. We find that 2-, 3- and 4-point functions have a non-trivial anomaly while connected higher point functions are non-anomalous. We pay special attention to semi-local contributions to correlators (terms with support on a set containing both coincident and separated points) and show that the anomalies in 3- and 4-point functions can be accounted for by such contributions. We discuss the implications of the our results for the question of scale versus conformal invariance.

Holography for inflation using conformal perturbation theory

We provide a precise and quantitative holographic description of a class of inflationary slow-roll models. The dual QFT is a deformation of a three-dimensional CFT by a nearly marginal operator, which, in the models we consider, generates an RG flow to a nearby IR fixed point. These models describe hilltop inflation, where the inflaton rolls from a local maximum of the potential in the infinite past (corresponding to the IR fixed point of the dual QFT) to reach a nearby local minimum in the infinite future (corresponding to the UV of the dual QFT). Through purely holographic means, we compute the spectra and bispectra of scalar and tensor cosmological perturbations. The QFT correlators to which these observables map holographically may be calculated using conformal perturbation theory, even when the dual QFT is strongly coupled. Both the spectra and the bispectra may be expressed this way in terms of CFT correlators that are fixed, up to a few constants, by conformal invariance. The form of slow-roll inflationary correlators is thus determined by the perturbative breaking of the de Sitter isometries away from the fixed point. Setting the constants to their values obtained by AdS/CFT at the fixed point, we find exact agreement with known expressions for the slow-roll power spectra and non-Gaussianities.

Holographic predictions for cosmological 3-point functions

We present the holographic predictions for cosmological 3-point correlators, involving both scalar and tensor modes, for a universe which started in a non-geometric holographic phase. Holographic formulae relate the cosmological 3-point functions to stress tensor correlation functions of a holographically dual three-dimensional non-gravitational QFT. We compute these correlators at 1-loop order for a theory containing massless scalars, fermions and gauge fields, and present an extensive analysis of the constraints due to Ward identities showing that they uniquely determine the correlators up to a few constants. We define shapes for all cosmological bispectra and compare the holographic shapes to the slow-roll ones, finding that some are distinguishable while others, perhaps surprisingly, are not.
