Enhancement of molecular coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering with silicon nano-antennas

Surface-enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (SE-CARS) takes advantage of surface plasmon resonances supported on metallic nanostructures to amplify the coherent Raman response of target molecules. While these metallic antennas have found significant success in SE-CARS studies, photo-induced morphological changes to the nanoantenna under ultrafast excitation introduce significant hurdles in terms of stability and reproducilibty. These hurdles need to be overcome in order to establish SE-CARS as a reliable tool for rapid biomolecular sensing. Here we address this challenge by performing molecular CARS measurements enhanced by nanoantennas made from high-index dielectric particles with more favorable thermal properties. We present the first experimental demonstration of enhanced molecular CARS signals observed at Si nano-antennas, which offer much improved thermal stability compared to their metallic counterparts.

Force Detection of Electromagnetic Beam Chirality at the Nanoscale

Many nanophotonic applications require precise control and characterization of electromagnetic field properties at the nanoscale. The chiral properties of the field are among its key characteristics, yet measurement of optical chirality at dimensions beyond the diffraction limit has proven difficult. Here we theoretically show that the chiral properties of light can be characterized down to the nanometer scale by means of force detection. To measure the chiral properties of a beam of given handedness at the nanoscale, we determine the photo-induced force exerted on a sharp tip, which is illuminated first by the beam of interest and second by an auxiliary beam of opposite handedness, in a sequential manner. We show that the difference between the force measurements is directly proportional to the chiral properties of the beam of interest. In particular, the gradient force difference $Δ\langle F_{grad, z}\rangle$ is found to have exclusive correspondence to the time-averaged helicity density of the incident light, whereas the differential scattering force provides information about the spin angular momentum density of light. We further characterize and quantify the helicity-dependent $Δ\langle F_{grad, z}\rangle$ using a Mie scattering formalism complemented with full wave simulations, underlining that the magnitude of the difference force is within an experimentally detectable range.

All Dielectric Metamaterial Loaded Tunable Plasmonic Waveguide

In this article, a 2D plasmonic waveguide loaded with all dielectric anisotropic metamaterial, consisting of alternative layers of Si-SiO2, has been theoretically proposed and numerically analyzed. Main characteristics of waveguide i.e. propagation constant, propagation length and normalized mode area have been calculated for different values of ridge width and height at telecommunication wavelength. The respective 1D structure of the waveguide has been analytically solved for the anisotropic ridge as a single uniaxial medium with dielectric tensor defined by Effective Medium Theory (EMT). The 2D structure has been analyzed numerically through FEM simulation using Mode analysis module in Comsol Multiphysics. Both the EMT and real multilayer structure have been considered in numerical simulations. Such structure with all dielectric metamaterial provides an extra degree of freedom namely fill factor, fraction of Si layer in a Si-SiO2 unit cell, to tune the propagation characteristics compared to the conventional DLSSP waveguide. A wide range of variations in all the characteristics have been observed for different fill factor values. Besides, the effect of the first interface layer has also been considered. Though all dielectric metamaterial has already been utilized in photonic waveguide as cladding, the implementation in plasmonic waveguide has not been investigated yet to our best knowledge. The proposed device might be a potential in deep sub-wavelength optics, PIC and optoelectronics.
