Spin-gapped magnets with weak anisotropies I: Constraints on the phase of the condensate wave function

We study the thermodynamic properties of dimerized spin-gapped quantum magnets with and without exchange anisotropy (EA) and Dzyaloshinsky and Moriya (DM) anisotropies within the mean-field approximation (MFA). For this purpose we obtain the thermodynamic potential $Ω$ of a triplon gas taking into account the strength of DM interaction up to second order. The minimization of $Ω$ with respect to self-energies $Σ_n$ and $Σ_{an}$ yields the equation for $X_{1,2}=Σ_n\pmΣ_{an}-μ$, which define the dispersion of quasiparticles $E_k=\sqrt{ε_k+X_1}\sqrt{ε_k+X_2}$ where $ε_k$ is the bare dispersion of triplons. The minimization of $Ω$ with respect to the magnitude $ρ_0$ and the phase $Θ$ of triplon condensate leads to coupled equations for $ρ_0$ and $Θ$. We discuss the restrictions on $ρ_0$ and $Θ$ imposed by these equations for systems with and without anisotropy. The requirement of dynamical stability conditions $(X_1>0, X_2>0)$ in equilibrium, as well as the Hugenholtz-Pines theorem, particularly for isotropic Bose condensate, impose certain conditions to the physical solutions of these equations. It is shown that the phase angle of a purely homogenous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) without any anisotropy may only take values $Θ=πn $ (n=0,$\pm 1,\pm 2$...) while that of BEC with even a tiny DM interaction results in $Θ=π/2+2πn$. In contrast to the widely used Hartree-Fock-Popov approximation, which allows arbitrary phase angle, our approach predicts that the phase angle may have only discrete values, while the phase of the wave function of the whole system remains arbitrary as expected. The consequences of this phase locking for interference of two Bose condensates and to their possible Josephson junction is studied.

Tan's contact as an indicator of completeness and self-consistency of a theory

It is well known that, Tan's contact could be calculated by using any of following three methods: by the asymptotic behavior of momentum distribution; by Tan's adiabatic sweep theorem; or by the operator product expansion as an expectation value of the interaction term. We argue that, if a theory describing Bose (or Fermi) system with the only contact interaction is self consistent, then it should lead to the same result in all three cases. As an example we considered MFT based approaches and established that among existing approximations of MFT, the Hartree - Fock - Bogoliubov (HFB) approach is the most self consistent. Actually, HFB is able to describe existing experimental data on Tan's contact for dilute Bose gas, but fails to predict its expected behavior at large gas parameter $(γ> 0.015)$. So, for appropriate description of properties of a Bose gas even at zero temperature, this approximation needs to be expanded by taking into account fluctuations in higher order then the second one.

Thermodynamics of noninteracting bosonic gases in cubic optical lattices versus ideal homogeneous Bose gases

We have studied thermodynamic properties of noninteracting gases in periodic lattice potential at arbitrary integer fillings and compared them with that of ideal homogeneous gases. Deriving explicit expressions for thermodynamic quantities and performing exact numerical calculations we have found that the dependence of e.g. entropy and energy on the temperature in the normal phase is rather weak. In the Bose condensed phase their power dependence on the reduced temperature is nearly linear, which is in contrast to that of ideal homogeneous gases. We evaluated the discontinuity in the slope of the specific heat which turned out to be approximately the same as that of the ideal homogeneous Bose gas for filling factor $ν=1$. With increasing $ν$ it decreases as the inverse of $ν$. These results may serve as a checkpoint for various experiments on optical lattices as well as theoretical studies of weakly interacting Bose systems in periodic potentials being a starting point for perturbative calculations.

Critical temperature of noninteracting bosonic gases in cubic optical lattices at arbitrary integer fillings

We have shown that the critical temperature of a Bose-Einstein condensate to a normal phase transition of noninteracting bosons in cubic optical lattices has a linear dependence on the filling factor, especially at large densities. The condensed fraction exhibits a linear power law dependence on temperature in contrast to the case of ideal homogeneous Bose gases.

Phase Transitions in Three-Dimensional Bosonic Systems in Optical Lattices

We formulate the Collective Quantum Field Theory for three-dimensional bosonic optical lattices and evaluate its consequences in a mean-field approximation to two collective fields, proposed by Fred Cooper et al. and in a lowest-order Variational Perturbation Theory (VPT). It is shown that present mean-field approximation predicts some essential features of the experimentally observed dependence of the critical temperature on the coupling strength and a second - order quantum phase transition. In contrast to a recent prediction for atomic gases by Fred Cooper et. al., we find no superfluid state with zero condensate fraction.

Quantum phase transitions in optical lattices beyond Bogoliubov approximation

We study the quantum phase transition in optical lattices using ordinary Bose Hubbard Hamiltonian within two loop approximation in variational perturbation theory. We have shown that this approximation can reproduce superfluid Mott insulator transition in contrast to the simple Bogoliubov or Hartee - Fock - Popov approximations. The superfluid fraction and ground state energy per particle vs input parameters of the model are studied.

The effects of disorder in dimerized quantum magnets in mean field approximations

We study theoretically the effects of disorder on Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) of bosonic triplon quasiparticles in doped dimerized quantum magnets. The condensation occurs in a strong enough magnetic field Hc, where the concentration of bosons in the random potential is sufficient to form the condensate. The effect of doping is partly modeled by delta - correlated disorder potential, which (i) leads to the uniform renormalization of the system parameters and (ii) produces disorder in the system with renormalized parameters. These approaches can explain qualitatively the available magnetization data in the Tl_(1-x)K_(x)CuCl_3 compound taken as an example. In addition to the magnetization, we found that the speed of the Bogoliubov mode has a peak as a function of doping parameter, x. No evidence of the pure Bose glass phase has been obtained in the BEC regime.

High-field instability of field-induced triplon Bose-Einstein condensate

We study properties of magnetic field-induced Bose-Einstein condensate of triplons as a function of temperature and the field within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach including the anomalous density. We show that the magnetization is continuous across the transition, in agreement with the experiment. In sufficiently strong fields the condensate becomes unstable due to triplon-triplon repulsion. As a result, the system is characterized by two critical magnetic fields: one producing the condensate and the other destroying it. We show that nonparabolic triplon dispersion arising due to the gapped bare spectrum and the crystal structure has a strong influence on the phase diagram.
