Large inverted band-gap in strained three-layer InAs/GaInSb quantum wells

Quantum spin Hall insulators (QSHIs) based on HgTe and three-layer InAs/GaSb quantum wells (QWs) have comparable bulk band-gaps of about 10--18~meV. The former however features a band-gap vanishing with temperature, while the gap in InAs/GaSb QSHIs is rather temperature-independent.Here, we report on the realization of large inverted band-gap in strained three-layer InAs/GaInSb QWs. By temperature-dependent magnetotransport measurements of gated Hall bar devices, we extract a gap as high as 45 meV. Combining local and non-local measurements, we attribute the edge conductivity observed at temperatures up to 40 K to the topological edge channels with equilibration lengths of a few micrometers. Our findings pave the way toward manipulating edge transport at high temperatures in QW heterostructures.

Polarization-Dependent Disappearance of a Resonance Signal -- Indication for Optical Pumping in a Storage Ring?

We report on laser spectroscopic measurements on Li$^+$ ions in the experimental storage ring ESR at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. Driving the $2s\,^3\!{S}_1\;(F=\frac{3}{2}) \,\leftrightarrow\,2p\,^3\!P_2\;(F=\frac{5}{2}) \leftrightarrow 2s\,^3\!{S}_1\;(F=\frac{5}{2})$ $Λ$-transition in $^7$Li$^+$ with two superimposed laser beams it was found that the use of circularly polarized light leads to a disappearance of the resonance structure in the fluorescence signal. This can be explained by optical pumping into a dark state of polarized ions. We present a detailed theoretical analysis of this process that supports the interpretation of optical pumping and demonstrates that the polarization induced by the laser light must then be at least partially maintained during the round trip of the ions in the storage ring. Such polarized ion beams in storage rings will provide opportunities for new experiments, especially on parity violation.

Shell-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates realized with dual-species mixtures

Ultracold quantum gases confined in three-dimensional bubble traps are promising tools for exploring many-body effects on curved manifolds. As an alternative to the conventional technique of radio-frequency dressing, we propose to create such shell-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates in microgravity based on dual-species atomic mixtures and we analyze their properties as well as the feasibility to realize symmetrically filled shells. Beyond similarities with the radio-frequency dressing method as in the collective-excitation spectrum, our approach has several natural advantages like the robustness of the created quantum bubbles and the possibility to magnify shell effects through an interaction-driven expansion.

Absolute rate coefficients for photorecombination of berylliumlike and boronlike silicon ions

We report measured rate coefficients for electron-ion recombination for Si10+ forming Si9+ and for Si9+ forming Si8+, respectively. The measurements were performed using the electron-ion merged-beams technique at a heavy-ion storage ring. Electron-ion collision energies ranged from 0 to 50 eV for Si9+ and from 0 to 2000 eV for Si10+, thus, extending previous measurements for Si10+ [Orban et al. 2010, Astrophys. J. 721, 1603] to much higher energies. Experimentally derived rate coefficients for the recombination of Si9+ and Si10+ ions in a plasma are presented along with simple parameterizations. These rate coefficients are useful for the modeling of the charge balance of silicon in photoionized plasmas (Si9+ and Si10+) and in collisionally ionized plasmas (Si10+ only). In the corresponding temperature ranges, the experimentally derived rate coefficients agree with the latest corresponding theoretical results within the experimental uncertainties.

Cryogenic micro-calorimeters for mass spectrometric identification of neutral molecules and molecular fragments

We have systematically investigated the energy resolution of a magnetic micro-calorimeter (MMC) for atomic and molecular projectiles at impact energies ranging from $E\approx13$ to 150 keV. For atoms we obtained absolute energy resolutions down to $ΔE \approx 120$ eV and relative energy resolutions down to $ΔE/E\approx10^{-3}$. We also studied in detail the MMC energy-response function to molecular projectiles of up to mass 56 u. We have demonstrated the capability of identifying neutral fragmentation products of these molecules by calorimetric mass spectrometry. We have modeled the MMC energy-response function for molecular projectiles and conclude that backscattering is the dominant source of the energy spread at the impact energies investigated. We have successfully demonstrated the use of a detector absorber coating to suppress such spreads. We briefly outline the use of MMC detectors in experiments on gas-phase collision reactions with neutral products. Our findings are of general interest for mass spectrometric techniques, particularly for those desiring to make neutral-particle mass measurements.

Storage Ring Cross Section Measurements for Electron Impact Ionization of Fe 7+

We have measured electron impact ionization (EII) for Fe 7+ from the ionization threshold up to 1200 eV. The measurements were performed using the TSR heavy ion storage ring. The ions were stored long enough prior to measurement to remove most metastables, resulting in a beam of 94% ground state ions. Comparing with the previously recommended atomic data, we find that the Arnaud & Raymond (1992) cross section is up to about 40\% larger than our measurement, with the largest discrepancies below about 400~eV. The cross section of Dere (2007) agrees to within 10%, which is about the magnitude of the experimental uncertainties. The remaining discrepancies between measurement and the most recent theory are likely due to shortcomings in the theoretical treatment of the excitation-autoionization contribution.

Absolute cross sections for photoionization of Xe$^{q+}$ ions (1 $\le$ q $\le$ 5) at the 3d ionization threshold

The photon-ion merged-beams technique has been employed at the new Photon-Ion spectrometer at PETRA III (PIPE) for measuring multiple photoionization of Xe$^{q+}$ (q=1-5) ions. Total ionization cross sections have been obtained on an absolute scale for the dominant ionization reactions of the type hν+ Xe$^{q+}$ $\to$ Xe$^{r+}$ + (q-r) e$^-$ with product charge states q+2 $\le$ r $\le$ q+5. Prominent ionization features are observed in the photon-energy range 650-750 eV, which are associated with excitation or ionization of an inner-shell 3d electron. Single-configuration Dirac-Fock calculations agree quantitatively with the experimental cross sections for non-resonant photoabsorption, but fail to reproduce all details of the measured ionization resonance structures.

Absolute rate coefficients for photorecombination and electron-impact ionization of magnesium-like iron ions from measurements at a heavy-ion storage ring

Rate coefficients for photorecombination (PR) and cross sections for electron-impact ionization (EII) of Fe$^{14+}$ forming Fe$^{13+}$ and Fe$^{15+}$, respectively, have been measured by employing the electron-ion merged-beams technique at a heavy-ion storage ring. Rate coefficients for PR and EII of Fe$^{14+}$ ions in a plasma are derived from the experimental measurements. Simple parametrizations of the experimentally derived plasma rate coefficients are provided for use in the modeling of photoionized and collisionally ionized plasmas. In the temperature ranges where Fe$^{14+}$ is expected to form in such plasmas the latest theoretical rate coefficients of Altun et al. [Astron. Astrophys. 474, 1051 (2007)] for PR and of Dere [Astron. Astrophys. 466, 771 (2007)] for EII agree with the experimental results to within the experimental uncertainties. Common features in the PR and EII resonance structures are identified and discussed.

Dissociative recombination measurements of NH$^+$ using an ion storage ring

We have investigated dissociative recombination (DR) of NH$^+$ with electrons using a merged beams configuration at the TSR heavy-ion storage ring located at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany. We present our measured absolute merged beams recombination rate coefficient for collision energies from 0 to 12 eV. From these data we have extracted a cross section which we have transformed to a plasma rate coefficient for the collisional plasma temperature range from $T_{\rm pl} = 10$ to $18000$ K. We show that the NH$^+$ DR rate coefficient data in current astrochemical models are underestimated by up to a factor of $\sim 9$. Our new data will result in predicted NH$^+$ abundances lower than calculated by present models. This is in agreement with the sensitivity limits of all observations attempting to detect NH$^+$ in interstellar clouds.

Recombination of W18+ ions with electrons: Absolute rate coefficients from a storage-ring experiment and from theoretical calculations

We present new experimentally measured and theoretically calculated rate coefficients for the electron-ion recombination of W$^{18+}$([Kr] $4d^{10}$ $4f^{10}$) forming W$^{17+}$. At low electron-ion collision energies, the merged-beam rate coefficient is dominated by strong, mutually overlapping, recombination resonances. In the temperature range where the fractional abundance of W$^{18+}$ is expected to peak in a fusion plasma, the experimentally derived Maxwellian recombination rate coefficient is 5 to 10 times larger than that which is currently recommended for plasma modeling. The complexity of the atomic structure of the open-$4f$-system under study makes the theoretical calculations extremely demanding. Nevertheless, the results of new Breit-Wigner partitioned dielectronic recombination calculations agree reasonably well with the experimental findings. This also gives confidence in the ability of the theory to generate sufficiently accurate atomic data for the plasma modeling of other complex ions.

Simulations of beta-decay of 6He in an Electrostatic Ion Trap

Trapped radioactive atoms present exciting opportunities for the study of fundamental interactions and symmetries. For example, detecting beta decay in a trap can probe the minute experimental signal that originates from possible tensor or scalar terms in the weak interaction. Such scalar or tensor terms affect, e.g., the angular correlation between a neutrino and an electron in the beta-decay process, thus probing new physics of beyond-the-standard-model nature. The present system focuses on a novel use of an innovative ion trapping device, the Electrostatic Ion Beam Trap. Such a trap has not been previously considered for Fundamental Interaction studies and exhibits potentially very significant advantages over other schemes. These advantages include improved injection efficiency of the radionuclide under study, an extended field-free region, ion-beam kinematics for better efficiency and ease-of operation and the potential for a much larger solid angle for the electron and recoiling atom counters. The beta-decay of trapped 6He is discussed and preliminary Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation and error-analysis considerations are presented.

Dissociative recombination measurements of HCl+ using an ion storage ring

We have measured dissociative recombination of HCl+ with electrons using a merged beams configuration at the heavy-ion storage ring TSR located at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany. We present the measured absolute merged beams recombination rate coefficient for collision energies from 0 to 4.5 eV. We have also developed a new method for deriving the cross section from the measurements. Our approach does not suffer from approximations made by previously used methods. The cross section was transformed to a plasma rate coefficient for the electron temperature range from T=10 to 5000 K. We show that the previously used HCl+ DR data underestimate the plasma rate coefficient by a factor of 1.5 at T=10 K and overestimate it by a factor of 3.0 at T=300 K. We also find that the new data may partly explain existing discrepancies between observed abundances of chlorine-bearing molecules and their astrochemical models.

Storage Ring Cross Section Measurements for Electron Impact Single and Double Ionization of Fe^13+ and Single Ionization of Fe^16+ and Fe^17+

We report measurements of electron impact ionization (EII) for Fe^13+, Fe^16+, and Fe^17+ over collision energies from below threshold to above 3000 eV. The ions were recirculated using an ion storage ring. Data were collected after a sufficiently long time that essentially all the ions had relaxed radiatively to their ground state before data were collected. For single ionization of $\fethirteen$ we find that previous single pass experiments are more than 40% larger than our results. Compared to our work, the theoretical cross section recommended by Arnaud & Raymond (1992) is more than 30% larger, while that of Dere (2007) is about 20% greater. Much of the discrepancy with Dere (2007) is due to the theory overestimating the contribution of excitation-autoionization via n=2 excitations. Double ionization of Fe^13+ is dominated by direct ionization of an inner shell electron accompanied by autoionization of a second electron. Our results for single ionization of Fe^16+ and Fe^17+ agree with theoretical calculations to within the experimental uncertainties.

Electron-ion Recombination of Fe XII forming Fe XI: Laboratory Measurements and Theoretical Calculations

We have measured electron-ion recombination for Fe XII forming Fe XI using a merged beams configuration at the heavy-ion storage ring TSR located at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany. The measured merged beams recombination rate coefficient (MBRRC) for collision energies from 0 to 1500 eV is presented. This work uses a new method for determining the absolute MBRRC based on a comparison of the ion beam decay rate with and without the electron beam on. For energies below 75 eV, the spectrum is dominated by dielectronic recombination (DR) resonances associated with 3s-3p and 3p-3d core excitations. At higher energies we observe contributions from 3-N' and 2-N' core excitations DR. We compare our experimental results to state-of-the-art multi-configuration Breit-Pauli (MCBP) calculations and find significant differences, both in resonance energies and strengths. We have extracted the DR contributions from the measured MBRRC data and transformed them into a plasma recombination rate coefficient (PRRC) for temperatures in the range of 10^3 to 10^7 K. We show that the previously recommended DR data for Fe XII significantly underestimate the PRRC at temperatures relevant for both photoionized plasmas (PPs) and collisionaly ionized plasmas (CPs). This is to be contrasted with our MCBP PRRC results which agree with the experiment to within 30% at PP temperatures and even better at CP temperatures. We find this agreement despite the disagreement shown by the detailed comparison between our MCBP and experimental MBRRC results. Lastly, we present a simple parameterized form of the experimentally derived PRRC for easy use in astrophysical modelling codes.

The Low-Temperature Nuclear Spin Equilibrium of H3+ in Collisions with H2

Recent observations of H2 and H3+ in diffuse interstellar sightlines revealed a difference in the nuclear spin excitation temperatures of the two species. This discrepancy comes as a surprise, as H3+ and H2 should undergo frequent thermalizing collisions in molecular clouds. Non-thermal behavior of the fundamental H3+ / H2 collision system at low temperatures was considered as a possible cause for the observed irregular populations. Here, we present measurements of the steady-state ortho/para ratio of H3+ in collisions with H2 molecules in a temperature-variable radiofrequency ion trap between 45-100 K. The experimental results are close to the expected thermal outcome and they agree very well with a previous micro-canonical model. We briefly discuss the implications of the experimental results for the chemistry of the diffuse interstellar medium.

Assignment of resonances in dissociative recombination of HD+ ions: high-resolution measurements compared with accurate computations

The collision-energy resolved rate coefficient for dissociative recombination of HD+ ions in the vibrational ground state is measured using the photocathode electron target at the heavy-ion storage ring TSR. Rydberg resonances associated with ro-vibrational excitation of the HD+ core are scanned as a function of the electron collision energy with an instrumental broadening below 1 meV in the low-energy limit. The measurement is compared to calculations using multichannel quantum defect theory, accounting for rotational structure and interactions and considering the six lowest rotational energy levels as initial ionic states. Using thermal equilibrium level populations at 300 K to approximate the experimental conditions, close correspondence between calculated and measured structures is found up to the first vibrational excitation threshold of the cations near 0.24 eV. Detailed assignments, including naturally broadened and overlapping Rydberg resonances, are performed for all structures up to 0.024 eV. Resonances from purely rotational excitation of the ion core are found to have similar strengths as those involving vibrational excitation. A dominant low-energy resonance is assigned to contributions from excited rotational states only. The results indicate strong modifications in the energy dependence of the dissociative recombination rate coefficient through the rotational excitation of the parent ions, and underline the need for studies with rotationally cold species to obtain results reflecting low-temperature ionized media.

Comment on "Missing Transverse-Doppler Effect in Time-Dilation Experiments with High-Speed Ions"

In an article "Missing Transverse-Doppler Effect in Time-Dilation Experiments with High-Speed Ions" by S. Devasia [arXiv:1003.2970v1], our recent Doppler shift experiments on fast ion beams are reanalyzed. Contrary to our analysis, Devasia concludes that our results provide an "indication of Lorentz violation". We argue that this conclusion is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of our experimental scheme and reiterate that our results are in excellent agreement with Special Relativity.

Dielectronic recombination of xenonlike tungsten ions

Dielectronic recombination (DR) of xenonlike W20+ forming W19+ has been studied experimentally at a heavy-ion storage-ring. A merged-beams method has been employed for obtaining absolute rate coefficients for electron-ion recombination in the collision energy range 0-140 eV. The measured rate coefficient is dominated by strong DR resonances even at the lowest experimental energies. At plasma temperatures where the fractional abundance of W20+ is expected to peak in a fusion plasma, the experimentally derived plasma recombination rate coefficient is over a factor of 4 larger than the theoretically-calculated rate coefficient which is currently used in fusion plasma modeling. The largest part of this discrepancy stems most probably from the neglect in the theoretical calculations of DR associated with fine-structure excitations of the W20+([Kr] 4d10 4f8) ion core.

Storage Ring Cross Section Measurements for Electron Impact Ionization of Fe^11+ Forming Fe^12+ and Fe^13+

We report ionization cross section measurements for electron impact single ionization (EISI) of Fe^11+$ forming Fe^12+ and electron impact double ionization (EIDI) of Fe^11+ forming Fe^13+. The measurements cover the center-of-mass energy range from approximately 230 eV to 2300 eV. The experiment was performed using the heavy ion storage ring TSR located at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Kernphysik in Heidelberg, Germany. The storage ring approach allows nearly all metastable levels to relax to the ground state before data collection begins. We find that the cross section for single ionization is 30% smaller than was previously measured in a single pass experiment using an ion beam with an unknown metastable fraction. We also find some significant differences between our experimental cross section for single ionization and recent distorted wave (DW) calculations. The DW Maxwellian EISI rate coefficient for Fe^11+ forming Fe^12+ may be underestimated by as much as 25% at temperatures for which Fe^11+ is abundant in collisional ionization equilibrium. This is likely due to the absence of 3s excitation-autoionization (EA) in the calculations. However, a precise measurement of the cross section due to this EA channel was not possible because this process is not distinguishable experimentally from electron impact excitation of an n=3 electron to levels of n > 44 followed by field ionization in the charge state analyzer after the interaction region. Our experimental results also indicate that the double ionization cross section is dominated by the indirect process in which direct single ionization of an inner shell 2l electron is followed by autoionization resulting in a net double ionization.

Storage-ring measurement of the hyperfine-induced 2s 2p 3P0 -> 2s2 1S0 transition rate in beryllium-like sulfur

The hyperfine induced 2s 2p 3P0 -> 2s2 1S0 transition rate in Be-like sulfur was measured by monitoring the decay of isotopically pure beams of 32-S12+ and 33-S12+ ions in a heavy-ion storage ring. Within the 4% experimental uncertainty the experimental value of 0.096(4)/s agrees with the most recent theoretical results of Cheng et al. [Phys. Rev. A 77, 052504 (2008)] and Andersson et al. [Phys. Rev. A 79, 032501 (2009)]. Repeated experiments with different magnetic fields in the storage-ring bending magnets demonstrate that artificial quenching of the 2s 2p 3P0 state by these magnetic fields is negligible.

Energy-sensitive imaging detector applied to the dissociative recombination of D2H+

We report on an energy-sensitive imaging detector for studying the fragmentation of polyatomic molecules in the dissociative recombination of fast molecular ions with electrons. The system is based on a large area (10 cm x 10 cm) position-sensitive, double-sided Si-strip detector with 128 horizontal and 128 vertical strips, whose pulse height information is read out individually. The setup allows to uniquely identify fragment masses and is thus capable of measuring branching ratios between different fragmentation channels, kinetic energy releases, as well as breakup geometries, as a function of the relative ion-electron energy. The properties of the detection system, which has been installed at the TSR storage ring facility of the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, is illustrated by an investigation of the dissociative recombination of the deuterated triatomic hydrogen cation D2H+. A huge isotope effect is observed when comparing the relative branching ratio between the D2+H and the HD+D channel; the ratio 2B(D2+H)/B(HD+D), which is measured to be 1.27 +/- 0.05 at relative electron-ion energies around 0 eV, is found to increase to 3.7 +/- 0.5 at ~5 eV.

Electron-ion Recombination of Fe X forming Fe IX and of Fe XI forming Fe X: Laboratory Measurements and Theoretical Calculations

We have measured electron-ion recombination for Fe$^{9+}$ forming Fe$^{8+}$ and for Fe$^{10+}$ forming Fe$^{9+}$ using merged beams at the TSR heavy-ion storage-ring in Heidelberg. The measured merged beams recombination rate coefficients (MBRRC) for relative energies from 0 to 75 eV are presented, covering all dielectronic recombination (DR) resonances associated with 3s->3p and 3p->3d core transitions in the spectroscopic species Fe X and Fe XI, respectively. We compare our experimental results to multi-configuration Breit-Pauli (MCBP) calculations and find significant differences. From the measured MBRRC we have extracted the DR contributions and transform them into plasma recombination rate coefficients (PRRC) for astrophysical plasmas with temperatures from 10^2 to 10^7 K. This spans across the regimes where each ion forms in photoionized or in collisionally ionized plasmas. For both temperature regimes the experimental uncertainties are 25% at a 90% confidence level. The formerly recommended DR data severely underestimated the rate coefficient at temperatures relevant for photoionized gas. At the temperatures relevant for photoionized gas, we find agreement between our experimental results and MCBP theory. At the higher temperatures relevant for collisionally ionized gas, the MCBP calculations yield a Fe XI DR rate coefficent which is significantly larger than the experimentally derived one. We present parameterized fits to our experimentally derived DR PRRC.

Anisotropic fragmentation in low-energy dissociative recombination

On a dense energy grid reaching up to 75 meV electron collision energy the fragmentation angle and the kinetic energy release of neutral dissociative recombination fragments have been studied in a twin merged beam experiment. The anisotropy described by Legendre polynomials and the extracted rotational state contributions were found to vary on a likewise narrow energy scale as the rotationally averaged rate coefficient. For the first time angular dependences higher than 2$^{nd}$ order could be deduced. Moreover, a slight anisotropy at zero collision energy was observed which is caused by the flattened velocity distribution of the electron beam.

Spectroscopy and dissociative recombination of the lowest rotational states of H3+

The dissociative recombination of the lowest rotational states of H3+ has been investigated at the storage ring TSR using a cryogenic 22-pole radiofrequency ion trap as injector. The H3+ was cooled with buffer gas at ~15 K to the lowest rotational levels, (J,G)=(1,0) and (1,1), which belong to the ortho and para proton-spin symmetry, respectively. The rate coefficients and dissociation dynamics of H3+(J,G) populations produced with normal- and para-H2 were measured and compared to the rate and dynamics of a hot H3+ beam from a Penning source. The production of cold H3+ rotational populations was separately studied by rovibrational laser spectroscopy using chemical probing with argon around 55 K. First results indicate a ~20% relative increase of the para contribution when using para-H2 as parent gas. The H3+ rate coefficient observed for the para-H2 source gas, however, is quite similar to the H3+ rate for the normal-H2 source gas. The recombination dynamics confirm that for both source gases, only small populations of rotationally excited levels are present. The distribution of 3-body fragmentation geometries displays a broad part of various triangular shapes with an enhancement of ~12% for events with symmetric near-linear configurations. No large dependences on internal state or collision energy are found.

Electron-ion recombination measurements motivated by AGN X-ray absorption features: Fe XIV forming Fe XIII

Recent spectroscopic models of active galactic nuclei (AGN) have indicated that the recommended electron-ion recombination rate coefficients for iron ions with partially filled M-shells are incorrect in the temperature range where these ions form in photoionized plasmas. We have investigated this experimentally for Fe XIV forming Fe XIII. The recombination rate coefficient was measured employing the electron-ion merged beams method at the Heidelberg heavy-ion storage-ring TSR. The measured energy range of 0-260 eV encompassed all dielectronic recombination (DR) 1s2 2s2 2p6 3l 3l' 3l'' nl''' resonances associated with the 3p1/2 -> 3p3/2, 3s -> 3p, 3p -> 3d and 3s -> 3d core excitations within the M-shell of the Fe XIV 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p parent ion. This range also includes the 1s2 2s2 2p6 3l 3l' 4l'' nl''' resonances associated with 3s -> 4l'' and 3p -> 4l'' core excitations. We find that in the temperature range 2--14 eV, where Fe XIV is expected to form in a photoionized plasma, the Fe XIV recombination rate coefficient is orders of magnitude larger than previously calculated values.

Photorecombination of berylliumlike Ti18+: Hyperfine quenching of dielectronic resonances

The photorecombination spectrum of 48Ti18+ was measured employing the merged electron-ion beams technique at a heavy-ion storage ring. The experimental electron-ion collision energy range 0-80 eV comprises all dielectronic recombination (DR) resonances associated with 2s->2p (Delta N =0) core excitations as well as trielectronic recombination (TR) resonances that involve 2s2->2p2 core double-excitations. At low collision energies DR resonances are observed that are associated with the excitation of metastable 2s2p 3P0 primary ions with nearly infinite lifetime for the isotope 48Ti with zero nuclear spin. For the isotope 47Ti with nonzero nuclear spin hyperfine quenching of these resonances occurs. The procedure for obtaining the associated time constant from a recombination measurement is outlined.

Recombination rate coefficients for astrophysical applications from storage-ring experiments

The basic approach for measuring electron-ion recombination rate coefficients in merged-beams electron-ion collision experiments at heavy-ion storage rings is outlined. As an example experimental results for the low temperature recombination of C IV ions are compared with the recommended theoretical rate coefficient by Mazzotta et al. The latter deviates by factors of up to 5 from the experimental one.
