Fractional Quantum Hall Effect at $ν=2+4/9$

Motivated by two independent experiments revealing a resistance minimum at the Landau level (LL) filling factor $ν=2+4/9$, characteristic of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) and suggesting electron condensation into a yet unknown quantum liquid, we propose that this state likely belongs in a parton sequence, put forth recently to understand the emergence of FQHE at $ν=2+6/13$. While the $ν=2+4/9$ state proposed here directly follows three simpler parton states, all known to occur in the second LL, it is topologically distinct from the Jain composite fermion (CF) state which occurs at the same $ν=4/9$ filling of the lowest LL. We predict experimentally measurable properties of the $4/9$ parton state that can reveal its underlying topological structure and definitively distinguish it from the $4/9$ Jain CF state.

Interplay between fractional quantum Hall liquid and crystal phases at low filling

The nature of the state at low Landau-level filling factors has been a longstanding puzzle in the field of the fractional quantum Hall effect. While theoretical calculations suggest that a crystal is favored at filling factors $ν\lesssim 1/6$, experiments show, at somewhat elevated temperatures, minima in the longitudinal resistance that are associated with fractional quantum Hall effect at $ν=$ 1/7, 2/11, 2/13, 3/17, 3/19, 1/9, 2/15 and 2/17, which belong to the standard sequences $ν=n/(6n\pm 1)$ and $ν=n/(8n\pm 1)$. To address this paradox, we investigate the nature of some of the low-$ν$ states, specifically $ν=1/7$, $2/13$, and $1/9$, by variational Monte Carlo, density matrix renormalization group, and exact diagonalization methods. We conclude that in the thermodynamic limit, these are likely to be incompressible fractional quantum Hall liquids, albeit with strong short-range crystalline correlations. This suggests a natural explanation for the experimentally observed behavior and a rich phase diagram that admits, in the low-disorder limit, a multitude of crystal-FQHE liquid transitions as the filling factor is reduced.

Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in Graphene: Quantitative Comparison between Theory and Experiment

The observation of extensive fractional quantum Hall states in graphene brings out the possibility of more accurate quantitative comparisons between theory and experiment than previously possible, because of the negligibility of finite width corrections. We obtain accurate phase diagram for differently spin-polarized fractional quantum Hall states, and also estimate the effect of Landau level mixing using the modified interaction pseudopotentials given in the literature. We find that the observed phase diagram is in good quantitative agreement with theory that neglects Landau level mixing, but the agreement becomes significantly worse when Landau level mixing is incorporated assuming that the corrections to the energies are linear in the Landau level mixing parameter $λ$. This implies that a first order perturbation theory in $λ$ is inadequate for the current experimental systems, for which $λ$ is typically on the order of or greater than one. We also test the accuracy of the composite-fermion theory and find that all lowest Landau level projection methods used in the literature are very accurate for the states of the form $n/(2n+1)$ but for the states at $n/(2n-1)$ the results are more sensitive to the projection method. An earlier prediction of an absence of spin transitions for the $n/(4n+1)$ states is confirmed by more rigorous calculations, and new predictions are made regarding spin physics for the $n/(4n-1)$ states.

Landau-Level Mixing and Particle-Hole Symmetry Breaking for Spin Transitions in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

The spin transitions in the fractional quantum Hall effect provide a direct measure of the tiny energy differences between differently spin-polarized states, and thereby serve as an extremely sensitive test of the quantitative accuracy of the theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect, and, in particular, of the role of Landau-level mixing in lifting the particle-hole symmetry. We report on an accurate quantitative study of this physics, evaluating the effect of Landau-level mixing in a nonperturbative manner using a fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo method. We find excellent agreement between our calculated critical Zeeman energies and the experimentally measured values. In particular, we find, as also do experiments, that the critical Zeeman energies for fractional quantum Hall states at filling factors $ν=2-n/(2n\pm 1)$ are significantly higher than those for $ν=n/(2n\pm 1)$, a quantitative signature of the lifting of particle-hole symmetry due to Landau-level mixing.

Fractionally charged skyrmions in fractional quantum Hall effect

The fractional quantum Hall effect has inspired searches for exotic emergent topological particles, such as fractionally charged excitations, composite fermions, abelian and nonabelian anyons and Majorana fermions. Fractionally charged skyrmions, which support both topological charge and topological vortex-like spin structure, have also been predicted to occur in the vicinity of 1/3 filling of the lowest Landau level. The fractional skyrmions, however, are anticipated to be exceedingly fragile, suppressed by very small Zeeman energies. Here we show that, slightly away from 1/3 filling, the smallest manifestations of the fractional skyrmion exist in the excitation spectrum for a broad range of Zeeman energies, and appear in resonant inelastic light scattering experiments as well-defined resonances slightly below the long wavelength spin wave mode. The spectroscopy of these exotic bound states serves as a sensitive tool for investigating the residual interaction between composite fermions, responsible for delicate new fractional quantum Hall states in this filling factor region.

Phase Diagram of Fractional Quantum Hall Effect of Composite Fermions in Multi-Component Systems

While the integer quantum Hall effect of composite fermions manifests as the prominent fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) of electrons, the FQHE of composite fermions produces further, more delicate states, arising from a weak residual interaction between composite fermions. We study the spin phase diagram of these states, motivated by the recent experimental observation by Liu {\em et al.} \cite{Liu14a,Liu14b} of several spin-polarization transitions at 4/5, 5/7, 6/5, 9/7, 7/9, 8/11 and 10/13 in GaAs systems. We show that the FQHE of composite fermions is much more prevalent in multicomponent systems, and consider the feasibility of such states for systems with ${\cal N}$ components for an SU(${\cal N}$) symmetric interaction. Our results apply to GaAs quantum wells, wherein electrons have two components, to AlAs quantum wells and graphene, wherein electrons have four components (two spins and two valleys), and to an H-terminated Si(111) surface, which can have six components. The aim of this article is to provide a fairly comprehensive list of possible incompressible fractional quantum Hall states of composite fermions, their SU(${\cal N}$) spin content, their energies, and their phase diagram as a function of the generalized "Zeeman" energy. We obtain results at three levels of approximation: from ground state wave functions of the composite fermion theory, from composite fermion diagonalization, and, whenever possible, from exact diagonalization. Effects of finite quantum well thickness and Landau level mixing are neglected in this study. We compare our theoretical results with the experiments of Liu {\em et al.} \cite{Liu14a,Liu14b} as well as of Yeh {\em et al.} \cite{Yeh99} for a two component system.

Spin-Polarization of Composite Fermions and Particle-Hole Symmetry Breaking

We study the critical spin-polarization energy ($α_{\rm C}$) above which fractional quantum Hall states in two-dimensional electron systems confined to symmetric GaAs quantum wells become fully spin-polarized. We find a significant decrease of $α_{\rm C}$ as we increase the well-width. In systems with comparable electron layer thickness, $α_{\rm C}$ for fractional states near Landau level filling $ν=3/2$ is about twice larger than those near $ν=1/2$, suggesting a broken particle-hole symmetry. Theoretical calculations, which incorporate Landau level mixing through an effective three-body interaction, and finite layer thickness, capture certain qualitative features of the experimental results.
