Constraints on the structure and seasonal variations of Triton's atmosphere from the 5 October 2017 stellar occultation and previous observations

A stellar occultation by Neptune's main satellite, Triton, was observed on 5 October 2017 from Europe, North Africa, and the USA. We derived 90 light curves from this event, 42 of which yielded a central flash detection. We aimed at constraining Triton's atmospheric structure and the seasonal variations of its atmospheric pressure since the Voyager 2 epoch (1989). We also derived the shape of the lower atmosphere from central flash analysis. We used Abel inversions and direct ray-tracing code to provide the density, pressure, and temperature profiles in the altitude range $\sim$8 km to $\sim$190 km, corresponding to pressure levels from 9 μbar down to a few nanobars. Results. (i) A pressure of 1.18$\pm$0.03 μbar is found at a reference radius of 1400 km (47 km altitude). (ii) A new analysis of the Voyager 2 radio science occultation shows that this is consistent with an extrapolation of pressure down to the surface pressure obtained in 1989. (iii) A survey of occultations obtained between 1989 and 2017 suggests that an enhancement in surface pressure as reported during the 1990s might be real, but debatable, due to very few high S/N light curves and data accessible for reanalysis. The volatile transport model analysed supports a moderate increase in surface pressure, with a maximum value around 2005-2015 no higher than 23 μbar. The pressures observed in 1995-1997 and 2017 appear mutually inconsistent with the volatile transport model presented here. (iv) The central flash structure does not show evidence of an atmospheric distortion. We find an upper limit of 0.0011 for the apparent oblateness of the atmosphere near the 8 km altitude.

Oxide Fermi liquid universality revealed by electron spectroscopy

We present a combined soft x-ray and high-resolution vacuum-ultraviolet angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the electron-overdoped cuprate Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ (PLCCO). Demonstration of its highly two-dimensional band structure enabled precise determination of the in-plane self-energy dominated by electron-electron scattering. Through analysis of this self-energy and the Fermi-liquid cut-off energy scale, we find -- in contrast to hole-doped cuprates -- a momentum isotropic and comparatively weak electron correlation in PLCCO. Yet, the self-energies extracted from multiple oxide systems combine to demonstrate a logarithmic divergent relation between the quasiparticle scattering rate and mass. This constitutes a spectroscopic version of the Kadowaki-Woods relation with an important merit -- the demonstration of Fermi liquid quasiparticle lifetime and mass being set by a single energy scale.

The large Trans-Neptunian Object 2002 TC$_{302}$ from combined stellar occultation, photometry and astrometry data

On 28th January 2018, the large Trans-Neptunian Object (TNO) 2002TC302 occulted a m$_v= $15.3 star with ID 130957813463146112 in the Gaia DR2 stellar catalog. 12 positive occultation chords were obtained from Italy, France, Slovenia and Switzerland. Also, 4 negative detections were obtained near the north and south limbs. This represents the best observed stellar occultation by a TNO other than Pluto, in terms of the number of chords published thus far. From the 12 chords, an accurate elliptical fit to the instantaneous projection of the body, compatible with the near misses, can be obtained. The resulting ellipse has major and minor axes of 543 $\pm$ 18 km and 460 $\pm$ 11 km, respectively, with a position angle of 3 $\pm$ 1 degrees for the minor axis. This information, combined with rotational light curves obtained with the 1.5m telescope at Sierra Nevada Observatory and the 1.23m telescope at Calar Alto observatory, allows us to derive possible 3D shapes and density estimations for the body, based on hydrostatic equilibrium assumptions. The effective area equivalent diameter is $\sim$ 84 km smaller than the radiometrically derived diameter using thermal data from Herschel and Spitzer Space Telescopes. This might indicate the existence of an unresolved satellite of up to $\sim$ 300 km in diameter, to account for all the thermal flux, although the occultation and thermal diameters are compatible within their error bars given the considerable uncertainty of the thermal results. The existence of a potential satellite also appears to be consistent with other ground-based data presented here. From the effective occultation diameter combined with H$_V$ measurements we derive a geometric albedo of 0.147 $\pm$ 0.005, which would be somewhat smaller if 2002TC302 has a satellite. The best occultation light curves do not show any signs of ring features or any signatures of a global atmosphere.

Emergence of a metallic meta-stable phase induced by electrical current in Ca_2RuO_4

A comprehensive study of the behavior of the Mott insulator Ca_2RuO_4 under electrical current drive is performed by combining two experimental probes: the macroscopic electrical transport and the microscopic X-Ray diffraction. The resistivity, rho, vs electric current density, J, and temperature, T , rho(J,T), resistivity map is drawn. In particular, the meta-stable state, induced between the insulating and the metallic thermodynamic states by current biasing Ca_2RuO_4 single crystals, is investigated. Such an analysis, combined with the study of the resulting RuO_6 octahedra energy levels, reveals that a metallic crystal phase emerges in the meta-stable regime. The peculiar properties of such a phase, coexisting with the well-established orthorhombic insulating and tetragonal metallic phases, allow to explain some of the unconventional and puzzling behaviors observed in the experiments, as a negative differential resistivity.

Raman phonon spectrum of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya helimagnet Ba2CuGe2O7

The Raman spectrum of Ba2CuGe2O7, a tetragonal insulator which develops Dzyaloshinsky- Moriya helical magnetism below TN = 3.2 K, has been detected at temperatures varying from 300 to 80 K in a single crystal, with the radiation polarized either in the ab plane or along the c axis of its tetragonal cell. 29 phonon lines out of the 35 allowed by the Raman selection rules for the present geometry were observed, and their vibrational frequencies were found in overall good agreement with those provided by shell-model calculations. Together with the previous report on the infrared-active phonons [A. Nucara et al., Phys. Rev. B 90, 014304 (2014)] the present study provides an exhaustive description, both experimental and theoretical, of the lattice dynamics in Ba2CuGe2O7.

Spin-Orbit-Induced Orbital Excitations in Sr2RuO4 and Ca2RuO4: A Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering Study

High-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the oxygen K-edge has been used to study the orbital excitations of Ca2RuO4 and Sr2RuO4. In combination with linear dichroism X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the ruthenium 4d-orbital occupation and excitations were probed through their hybridization with the oxygen p-orbitals. These results are described within a minimal model, taking into account crystal field splitting and a spin-orbit coupling λ_{so}=200~meV. The effects of spin-orbit interaction on the electronic structure and implications for the Mott and superconducting ground states of (Ca,Sr)2RuO4 are discussed.

Infrared phonon spectrum of the tetragonal helimagnet Ba$_2$CuGe$_2$O$_7$

The lattice dynamics of Ba$_2$CuGe$_2$O$_7$, a compound which develops Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) helical magnetism below $T_N$ = 3.2 K, has been studied by measuring the infrared reflectivity of a single crystal with the radiation polarized both in the $ab$ plane and along the $c$ axis of its tetragonal cell, from 7 K to 300 K. In this compound, where the unit cell has no inversion symmetry, fourteen $E$ phonon modes of the $ab$ plane, out of the eighteen predicted, and all the ten $B_2$ modes of the $c$ axis, have been observed. They have been assigned to the atomic motions by a comparison with shell-model calculations, which provided vibrational frequencies in good agreement with the experiment, while most calculated intensities turned to be much lower than the experimental values. This discrepancy has been tentatively explained by assuming strong electron-phonon interactions, a hypothesis supported by the failure of the $f$- sum rule if restricted to the phonon region. Indeed, we observe a remarkable increase in the oscillator strengths at $T$'s low but higher than $T_N$, which suggests that the dielectric constant of Ba$_2$CuGe$_2$O$_7$ may increase at those temperatures.

A new approach for improving global critical current density in Fe(Se0.5Te0.5) polycrystalline materials

A novel method to prepare bulk Fe(Se0.5Te0.5) samples is presented, based on a melting process and a subsequent annealing treatment. With respect to the standard sintering technique, it produces much more homogeneous and denser samples, characterized by large and well interconnected grains. The resulting samples exhibit optimal critical temperature values, sharp resistive and magnetic transitions, large magnetic hysteresis loops and high upper critical fields are observed. Interestingly, the global critical current density is much enhanced as compared to the values reported in literature for bulk samples of the same 11 family, reaching about 103 A/cm2 at zero field at 4.2 K as assessed by magnetic, transport and magneto-optical techniques. Even more importantly, its field dependence turns out to be very weak, such that at μ_{0}H = 7 T it is suppressed only by a factor \sim2.

Effective tight-binding model for renormalized band structure of Sr2RuO4

We derive an effective quasiparticle tight-binding model which is able to describe with high accuracy the low-energy electronic structure of Sr2RuO4 obtained by means of low temperature angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Such approach is applied to determine the momentum and orbital dependent effective masses and velocities of the electron quasiparticles close to the Fermi level. We demonstrate that the model can provide, among the various computable physical quantities, a very good agreement with the specific heat coefficient and the plasma frequency. Its use is underlined as a realistic input in the analysis of the possible electronic mechanisms related to the superconducting state of Sr2RuO4.

Quantum phase slips in superconducting Nb nanowire networks deposited on self-assembled Si templates

Robust porous silicon substrates were employed for generating interconnected networks of superconducting ultrathin Nb nanowires. Scanning electron microscopy analysis was performed to investigate the morphology of the samples, which constitute of polycrystalline single wires with grain size of about 10 nm. The samples exhibit nonzero resistance over a broad temperature range below the critical temperature, fingerprint of phase slippage processes. The transport data are satisfactory reproduced by models describing both thermal and quantum fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter in thin homogeneous superconducting wires.

Long- to short-range magnetic order in fluorine-doped CeFeAsO

The evolution of the antiferromagnetic order parameter in CeFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} as a function of the fluorine content x was investigated primarily via zero-field muon-spin spectroscopy. The long-range magnetic order observed in the undoped compound gradually turns into a short-range order at x=0.04, seemingly accompanied/induced by a drastic reduction of the magnetic moment of the iron ions. Superconductivity appears upon a further increase in doping (x>0.04) when, unlike in the cuprates, the Fe magnetic moments become even weaker. The resulting phase diagram evidences the presence of a crossover region, where the superconducting and the magnetic order parameters coexist on a nanoscopic range.

Surface and bulk electronic structure of unconventional superconductor Sr_2RuO_4: unusual splitting of the beta-band

We present an angle resolved photoemission study of the surface and bulk electronic structure of the single layer ruthenate Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. As the early studies of its electronic structure by photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy were confronted with a problem of surface reconstruction, surface aging was previously proposed as a possible remedy to access the bulk states. Here we suggest an alternative way by demonstrating that, in the case of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, circularly polarised light can be used to disentangle the signals from the bulk and surface layers, thus opening the possibility of investigating many-body interactions both in bulk and surface bands. The proposed procedure results in improved momentum resolution, which enabled us to detect an unexpected splitting of the surface $β$ band. We propose that spin--orbit splitting might be responsible for this, and discuss possible relations of the newly observed surface feature to topological matter.

Superconductivity in Sr2RuO4-Sr3Ru2O7 eutectic crystals

Superconducting behavior has been observed in the Sr2RuO4-Sr3Ru2O7 eutectic system as grown by the flux-feeding floating zone technique. A supercurrent flows across a single interface between Sr2RuO4 and Sr3Ru2O7 areas at distances that are far beyond those expected in a conventional proximity scenario. The current-voltage characteristics within the Sr3Ru2O7 macrodomain, as extracted from the eutectic, exhibit signatures of superconductivity in the bilayered ruthenate. Detailed microstructural, morphological and compositional analyses address issues on the concentration and the size of Sr2RuO4 inclusions within the Sr3Ru2O7 matrix. We speculate on the possibility of inhomogeneous superconductivity in the eutectic Sr3Ru2O7 and exotic pairing induced by the Sr2RuO4 inclusions.

Crystal structures, magnetic and superconducting properties of the RuSr_2NdCu_2O_x and RuSr_2GdCu_2O_y compounds

We report the magnetization and the susceptibility measurements of the RuSr_2GdCu_2O_y and RuSr_2NdCu_2O_x perovskite materials. We find that RuSr_2GdCu_2O_y compound exhibits a magnetic transition at Tn=135 K followed by a superconducting one with an onset Tc=35 K. Samples of RuSr_2NdCu_2O_x material have shown neither superconductivity nor magnetic transition. XRD measurements show that in RuSr_2NdCu_2O_x the Nd ions tend to substitute to Sr ions in very high percentages. The relevance of this phenomenon on the absence of superconductivity in RuSr_2NdCu_2O_x is discussed.
