Orbital-slective behaviour in cubanite CuFe2S3

Using {\it ab initio} band structure calculations we show that mineral cubanite, CuFe$_2$S$_3$, demonstrates an orbital-selective behavior with some of the electrons occupying molecular orbitals of $x^2-y^2$ symmetry and others localized at atomic orbitals. This is a rare situation for $3d$ transition metal compounds explains experimentally observed absence of charge disproportionation, anomalous Mössbauer data, and ferromagnetic ordering in between nearest neighbor Fe ions.

Microscopic origins and stability of the ferromagnetism in Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$

Based on the density functional theory, we examine the origin of ferromagnetism in the Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ using different types of response theories. We argue that the magnetism of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ has a dual nature and bears certain aspects of both itineracy and localization. On the one hand, the magnetism is soft, where the local magnetic moments strongly depend on temperature and the angles formed by these moments at different Co sites of the kagome lattice, as expected for itinerant magnets. On the other hand, the picture of localized spins still remains adequate for the description of the local stability of the ferromagnetic (FM) order with respect to the transversal spin fluctuations. For the latter purposes, we employ two approaches, which provide quite different pictures for interatomic exchange interactions: the regular magnetic force theorem and a formally exact theory based on the calculation of the inverse response function. The exact theory predicts Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ to be a three-dimensional ferromagnet with the strongest interaction operating between next-nearest neighbors in the adjacent kagome planes. The ligand states are found to play a very important role by additionally stabilizing the FM order. When the local moments decrease, the interplane interactions sharply decrease, first causing the FM order to become quasi-two-dimensional, and then making it unstable with respect to the spin-spiral order propagating perpendicular to the kagome plane. The latter instability is partly contributed by the states at the Fermi surface and may be relevant to the magnetic behavior of Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ near the Curie temperature. Peculiarities of the half-metallic ferromagnetism in Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ are also discussed.

Orbitally induced hierarchy of exchange interactions in zigzag antiferromagnetic state of honeycomb silver delafossite Ag3Co2SbO6

We report the revised crystal structure, static and dynamic magnetic properties of quasi-two dimensional honeycomb-lattice silver delafossite Ag3Co2SbO6. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data are consistent with the onset of antiferromagnetic long range order at low temperatures with Néel temperature TN ~ 21.2 K. In addition, the magnetization curves revealed a field-induced (spin-flop type) transition below TN in moderate magnetic fields. The GGA+U calculations show the importance of the orbital degrees of freedom, which maintain a hierarchy of exchange interaction in the system. The strongest antiferromagnetic exchange coupling was found in the shortest Co-Co pairs and is due to direct and superexchange interactions between the half-filled xz+yz orbitals pointing directly to each other. The other four out of six nearest neighbor exchanges within the cobalt hexagon are suppressed, since for these bonds active half-filled orbitals turned out to be parallel and do not overlap. The electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra reveal a Gaussian shape line attributed to Co2+ ion in octahedral coordination with average effective g-factor g=2.3+/-0.1 at room temperature and shows strong divergence of ESR parameters below 120 K, which imply an extended region of short-range correlations. Based on the results of magnetic and thermodynamic studies in applied fields, we propose the magnetic phase diagram for the new honeycomb-lattice delafossite.

Magnetic phase diagram and first principles study of Pb3TeCo3V2O14

An antiferromagnetic ordering in Pb3TeCo3V2O14 takes place through formation of short range correlation regime with T* ~ 10.5 K and succession of second order phase transition at TN1 = 8.9 K and first order phase transition at TN2 = 6.3 K. An external magnetic field rapidly destroys magnetic structure at T < TN2 and influences the magnetic order at TN2 < T < TN1 resulting in complex magnetic phase diagram of Pb3TeCo3V2O14 as derived from magnetization and specific heat measurements. The first principles calculations indicate that in variance with layered crystal structure the magnetic subsystem of Pb3TeCo3V2O14 is quasi-one-dimensional and highly unusual consisting of weakly coupled triangular tubes.

Orbital structure and magnetic ordering in stoichiometric and doped crednerite CuMnO2

The exchange interactions and magnetic structure in layered system CuMnO2 (mineral crednerite) and in nonstoichiometric system Cu1.04Mn0.96O2, with triangular layers distorted due to orbital ordering of the Mn3+ ions, are studied by ab-initio band-structure calculations, which were performed within the GGA+U approximation. The exchange interaction parameters for the Heisenberg model within the Mn-planes and between the Mn-planes were estimated. We explain the observed in-plane magnetic structure by the dominant mechanism of the direct d-d exchange between neighboring Mn ions. The superexchange via O ions, with 90 degree Mn-O-Mn bonds, plays less important role for the in-plane exchange. The interlayer coupling is largely dominated by one exchange path between the half-filled 3z^2-r^2 orbitals of Mn3+. The change of interlayer coupling from antiferromagnetic in pure CuMnO2 to ferromagnetic in doped material is also explained by our calculations.

Two-step antiferromagnetic transition and moderate triangular frustration in Li2Co(WO4)2

We present a detailed investigation of the magnetic properties of the spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ system Li$_2$Co(WO$_4$)$_2$ by means of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. Our experimental results show that in Li$_2$Co(WO$_4$)$_2$ a short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations appear near $χ$$_{max}$ $\sim$ 11 K and two successive long-range AFM phase transitions are observed at T$_{N1}$$\sim$ 9 K and T$_{N2}$$\sim$ 7 K. The frustration factor, $\mid$$Θ$$\mid$/T$_{N1}$$\sim$3, indicates that the system is moderately frustrated, which is identifiable by the broken triangular symmetry within both $ab$- and $bc$-planes for the triclinic crystal structure. The magnetic isotherm at temperatures below T$_{N2}$ shows a field-induced spin-flop transition, and a complete H-T phase diagram for the two-step AFM system is mapped. $Ab$~$initio$ band structure calculations suggest that the strongest exchange coupling does not correspond to the shortest Co-Co distance along the $a$-axis, but rather along the diagonal direction through a Co-O-W-O-Co super-superexchange path within the $bc$-plane

Unusual magnetism of layered chromium sulfides MCrS2 (M=Li, Na, K, Ag, and Au)

MCrS2 compounds (M=Li, Na, K, Cu, Ag, and Au) with triangular Cr layers show large variety of magnetic ground states ranging from 120-degree antiferromagnetic order of Cr spins in LiCrS2 to double stripes in AgCrS2, helimagnetic order in NaCrS2, and, finally, ferromagnetic Cr layers in KCrS2. On the base of ab-initio band structure calculations and an analysis of various contributions to exchange interactions between Cr spins we explain this tendency as originating from a competition between antiferromagnetic direct nearest-neighbor d-d exchange and ferromagnetic superexchange via S p states which leads to the change of the sign of the nearest neighbor interaction depending on the radius of a M ion. It is shown that other important interactions are the third-neighbor interaction in a layer and interlayer exchange. We suggest that strong magneto-elastic coupling is most probably responsible for multiferroic properties of at least one material of this family, namely, AgCrS2.

Crystal field splitting in correlated systems with the negative charge-transfer gap

Special features of the crystal field splitting of $d-$levels in the transition metal compounds with the small or negative charge-transfer gap $Δ_{CT}$ are considered. We show that in this case the Coulomb term and the covalent contribution to the $t_{2g} - e_g$ splitting have different signs. In order to check the theoretical predictions we carried out the ab-initio band structure calculations for Cs$_2$Au$_2$Cl$_6$, in which the charge-transfer gap is negative, so that the $d-$electrons predominantly occupy low-lying bonding states. For these states the $e_g$-levels lie below $t_{2g}$ ones, which demonstrates that at least in this case the influence of the $p-d$ covalency on the total value of the crystal field splitting is stronger than the Coulomb interaction (which would lead to the opposite level order). We also show that the states in conduction band are made predominantly of $p-$states of ligands (Cl), with small admixture of $d-$states of Au.

Electronic structure of V$_4$O$_7$: charge ordering, metal-insulator transition and magnetism

The low and high-temperature phases of V$_4$O$_7$ have been studied by \textit{ab initio} calculations. At high temperature, all V atoms are electronically equivalent and the material is metallic. Charge and orbital ordering, associated with the distortions in the V pseudo-rutile chains, occur below the metal-insulator transition. Orbital ordering in the low-temperature phase, different in V$^{3+}$ and V$^{4+}$ chains, allows to explain the distortion pattern in the insulating phase of V$_4$O$_7$. The in-chain magnetic couplings in the low-temperature phase turn out to be antiferromagnetic, but very different in the various V$^{4+}$ and V$^{3+}$ bonds. The V$^{4+}$ dimers formed below the transition temperature form spin singlets, but V$^{3+}$ ions, despite dimerization, apparently participate in magnetic ordering.

Peierls Mechanism of the Metal-Insulator Transition in Ferromagnetic Hollandite K2Cr8O16

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment shows that the metal-insulator transition occurring in a ferromagnetic state of a hollandite K$_2$Cr$_8$O$_{16}$ is accompanied by a structural distortion from the tetragonal $I4/m$ to monoclinic $P112_{1}/a$ phase with a $\sqrt{2}\times\sqrt{2}\times 1$ supercell. Detailed electronic structure calculations demonstrate that the metal-insulator transition is caused by a Peierls instability in the quasi-one-dimensional column structure made of four coupled Cr-O chains running in the $c$-direction, leading to the formation of tetramers of Cr ions below the transition temperature. This furnishes a rare example of the Peierls transition of fully spin-polarized electron systems.
