Computationally efficient analytic representation of relativistic transition matrix elements in the Lamb shift calculations for hydrogenic atoms

By using the plane-wave expansion for the electromagnetic-field vector potential, transition matrix elements between the relativistic bound and unbound states of hydrogenic atoms were expressed explicitly in terms of finite series made of hypergeometric functions. This representation for the above mentioned matrix elements proved very convenient for direct numerical calculation of their contributions to the Lamb shift in hydrogenic atoms.

Infinitely Improvable Upper Bound Estimates for Acoustical Polaron Ground State Energy

It was shown that an infinite convergent sequence of improving non-increasing upper bounds to the ground state energy of a slow-moving acoustical polaron can be obtained by means of generalized variational method. The proposed approach is especially well-suited for massive analytical and numerical computations of experimentally measurable properties of realistic polarons and can be elaborated even further, without major alterations, to allow for treatment of various polaron-type models.

Spin-polarized electronic structure of the core-shell ZnO/ZnO:Mn nanowires probed by x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy

The combination of x-ray spectroscopy methods complemented with theoretical analysis unravels the coexistence of paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases in the Zn_0.9Mn_0.1O shell deposited onto array of wurtzite ZnO nanowires. The shell is crystalline with orientation toward the ZnO growth axis, as demonstrated by X-ray linear dichroism. EXAFS analysis confirmed that more than 90% of Mn atoms substituted Zn in the shell while fraction of secondary phases was below 10%. The value of manganese spin magnetic moment was estimated from the Mn Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy to be 4.3μB which is close to the theoretical value for substitutional Mn_Zn. However the analysis of L_2,3 x-ray magnetic circular dichroism data showed paramagnetic behaviour with saturated spin magnetic moment value of 1.95μB as determined directly from the spin sum rule. After quantitative analysis employing atomic multiplet simulations such difference was explained by a coexistence of paramagnetic phase and local antiferromagnetic coupling of Mn magnetic moments. Finally, spin-polarized electron density of states was probed by the spin-resolved Mn K-edge XANES spectroscopy and consequently analyzed by band structure calculations.

Spin-state transition, magnetism and local crystal structure in Eu_{1-x}Ca_xCoO_{3-d}

The doping series Eu1-xCaxCoO3-d provides a rather peculiar way to study the spin-state transition in cobalt-based complex oxides since partial substitution of Eu3+ ions by Ca2+ ions does not increase the mean valence state of cobalt but is accompanied by appearance of oxygen vacancies in the ratio d \sim x/2. In the parent compound EuCoO3, the low spin (LS)-high spin (HS) transition takes place at temperatures so high that the chemical decomposition prevents its direct observation. The substitution of Eu3+ for Ca2+ in this system shifts the LS-HS transition to lower temperatures. The energy gap associated with this transition in octahedrally-coordinated Co3+ ions changes from 1940 K in EuCoO3 to 1540 K in Eu0.9Ca0.1CoO2.95 and 1050 K in Eu0.8Ca0.2CoO2.9. Besides, each O2- vacancy reduces the local coordination of two neighboring Co3+ ions from octahedral to pyramidal thereby locally creating magnetically active sites which couple into dimers. These dimers at low temperatures form another gapped magnetic system with very different energy scale, D~3 K, on the background of intrinsically non-magnetic lattice of octahedrally-coordinated low-spin Co3+ ions.
