Switching of an antiferromagnet controlled by spin canting in a laser-induced hidden phase

During laser-induced phase transitions, fast transformations of electronic, atomic, and spin configurations often involve emergence of hidden and metastable phases. Being inaccessible under any other stimuli, such phases are indispensable for unveiling mechanisms and controlling the transitions. We experimentally explore spin kinetics during ultrafast first-order 90$^{\circ}$ spin-reorientation (SR) transition in a canted antiferromagnet Fe$_3$BO$_6$, and reveal that the transition is controlled by the canting between the magnetic sublattices. Laser-induced perturbation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction results in a change of the intersublattice canting within first picoseconds, bringing Fe$_3$BO$_6$ to a hidden phase. Once this phase emerges, laser-induced heating activates precessional 90$^\circ$ spin switching. Combination of the spin canting and heating controls the final spin configuration comprising coexisting initial and switched phases. Extended phase coexistence range is in a striking contrast to the narrow SR transition in Fe$_3$BO$_6$ induced by conventional heating.

Enhancement of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in thin ferromagnetic films by atomic-scale modulation of interfaces

To stabilize the non-trivial spin textures, e.g., skyrmions or chiral domain walls in ultrathin magnetic films, an additional degree of freedom such as the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (IDMI) must be induced by the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of a stacked heavy metal layer. However, advanced approaches to simultaneously control IDMI and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are needed for future spin-orbitronic device implementations. Here, we show an effect of atomic-scale surface modulation on the magnetic properties and IDMI in ultrathin films composed of 5d heavy metal/ferromagnet/4d(5d) heavy metal or oxide interfaces, such as Pt/CoFeSiB/Ru, Pt/CoFeSiB/Ta, and Pt/CoFeSiB/MgO. The maximum IDMI value corresponds to the correlated roughness of the bottom and top interfaces of the ferromagnetic layer. The proposed approach for significant enhancement of PMA and IDMI through the interface roughness engineering at the atomic scale offers a powerful tool for the development of the spin-orbitronic devices with the precise and reliable controllability of their functionality.

Manipulation of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in Co/Pt multilayers with strain

Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is experimentally investigated in Pt/Co/Pt multilayer films under strain. A strong variation (from 0.1 to 0.8 mJ/m$^2$) of the DMI constant is demonstrated at $\pm 0.1\%$ in-plane uniaxial deformation of the films. The anisotropic strain induces strong DMI anisotropy. The DMI constant perpendicular to the strain direction changes sign while the constant along the strain direction does not. Estimates are made showing that DMI manipulation with an electric field can be realized in hybrid ferroelectric/ferromagnetic systems. So, the observed effect opens the way to manipulate the DMI and eventually skyrmions with a voltage via a strain-mediated magneto-electric coupling.

Skyrmion formation in nanodiscs using magnetic force microscopy tip

In this manuscript we demonstrate the skyrmion formation in ultrathin nanodots using magnetic force microscopy tip. Submicron-size dots based on Pt/Co/Au multilayers hosting interfacial Dzyaloshiskii-Morya interaction were used in the experiments. We have found that the tip field generated by the magnetic tip significantly affects the magnetization state of the nanodots and leads to the formation of skyrmions. Micromagnetic simulations explain the evolution of the magnetic state during magnetic force microscopy scans and confirm the possibility of the skyrmion formation. The key transition in this process is the formation of the horseshoe magnetic domain. We have found that formation of skyrmion by the magnetic probe is a reliable and repetitive procedure. Our findings provide a simple solution for skyrmions formation in nanodots.
