High-temperature superconductivity in hydrides

Over the past six years (2015-2021), many superconducting hydrides with critical temperatures $T_{C}$ up to 250 K, which are currently record highs, have been discovered. Now we can already say that a special field of superconductivity has developed. This is hydride superconductivity at ultrahigh pressures. For the most part, the properties of superhydrides are well described by the Migdal-Eliashberg theory of strong electron-phonon interaction, especially when anharmonicity of phonons is taken into account. The isotope effect, the effect of the magnetic field (up to 60-70 T) on the critical temperature and critical current in the hydride samples, the dependence of $T_{C}$ on the pressure and degree of doping were investigated. The divergences between the theory and experiment are of interest, especially in the field of phase stability and in the behavior of the upper critical magnetic fields at low temperatures. This article presents a retrospective analysis of data of 2015-2021 and describes promising directions for future research of hydride superconductivity.

Multiple Andreev reflections spectroscopy of two-gap 1111- and 11 Fe-based superconductors

Using the "break-junction" technique we prepared and studied superconductor - constriction - superconductor nanocontacts in polycrystalline samples of Fe-based superconductors CeO$_{0.88}$F$_{0.12}$FeAs (Ce-1111; $T_C^{\rm bulk} = 41 \pm 1 K$), LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs (La-1111; $T_C^{\rm bulk} = 28 \pm 1 K$), and FeSe ($T_C^{\rm bulk} = 12 \pm 1 K$). We detected two subharmonic gap structures related with multiple Andreev reflections, indicating the presence of two superconducting gaps with the BCS-ratios $2Δ_L/k_BT_C = 4.2 ÷5.9$ and $2Δ_S/k_BT_C\sim 1 \ll 3.52$, respectively. Temperature dependences of the two gaps $Δ_{L,S}(T)$ in FeSe indicate a $k$-space proximity effect between two superconducting condensates. For the studied iron-based superconductors we found a linear relation between the gap $Δ_L$ and magnetic resonance energy, $E_{\rm res} \approx 2Δ_L$.

Experimental study of intrinsic multiple Andreev reflections effect in GdO(F)FeAs superconductor array junctions

We report the first observation of the intrinsic multiple Andreev reflections effect (IMARE) in S-n-S-...-S-arrays (S = superconductor, n = normal metal) formed by "break-junction" technique in GdO(F)FeAs superconductor (Tc = 48 - 53 K). We show that superconducting gap peculiarities at dI/dV-spectra sharpen dramatically in the arrays as compared with that in the single-contact spectra; this enables to improve significantly accuracy of the bulk superconducting parameters determination. Using IMARE, we determined the large and the small gap values Δ_L = 11 +- 1.1 meV and Δ_S = 2.6 +- 0.4 meV. The BCS-ratio 2Δ_L/kTc^{local} = 5.0 - 5.9 > 3.52 (Tc^{local} is the contact area critical temperature) evidences for a strong electron-boson coupling. The results obtained agree well with our previous data by Andreev spectroscopy for single SnS-contacts.

Multigap Superconductivity in GdFeAsO$_{0.88}$ Evidenced by SnS-Andreev Spectroscopy

Using intrinsic multiple Andreev reflection effect (IMARE) spectroscopy we studied superconducting properties of nearly optimal oxygen-deficient GdFeAsO$_{0.88}$ polycrystalline samples (bulk critical temperatures $T_C^{bulk} = 49 ÷52$\,K). Temperature dependences for two superconducting gaps $Δ_{L,S}(T)$ ($T_C^{local} = 48 ÷50$\,K) have been measured in the range from 4.2 to 50\,K. The $Δ_{L,S}(T)$ dependences were found to deviate from the BCS-like function; this suggests an importance of the $k$-space (internal) proximity effect between the two condensates.

Study of the Two-Gap Superconductivity in GdO(F)FeAs by ScS-Andreev Spectroscopy

Current-voltage characteristics and dynamic conductance of the superconductor - constriction - superconductor junctions in GdO(F)FeAs polycrystalline samples with critical temperatures Tc^local = 46 - 53 K were investigated. Two superconducting gaps, the large Delta_L = 10.5 +- 2 meV, and the small one Delta_S = 2.3 +- 0.4 meV were clearly observed at T = 4.2 K. The 2Delta_L/kTc^local = 5.5 +- 1 ratio gives support to the strong coupling mechanism which is responsible for the high Tc value. Temperature dependence of the large gap Delta_L(T) indicates the presence of intrinsic proximity effect (in k-space) between two superconducting condensates.

Observation of Multi-Gap Superconductivity in GdO(F)FeAs by Andreev Spectroscopy

We have studied current-voltage characteristics of Andreev contacts in polycrystalline GdO$_{0.88}$F$_{0.12}$FeAs samples with bulk critical temperature ${T_c}$ = (52.5 \pm 1)K using break-junction technique. The data obtained cannot be described within the single-gap approach and suggests the existence of a multi-gap superconductivity in this compound. The large and small superconducting gap values estimated at T = 4.2K are ΔL = 10.5 \pm 2 meV and ΔS = 2.3 \pm 0.4 meV, respectively.

Synthesis of novel rare earth - iron oxide chalcogenides with the La2Fe2O3Se2 structure

Our searches for new oxide chalcogenides of rare earths and Fe, Co, Ni, and Zn resulted in preparation of two new compounds Ce2Fe2O3S2 and Pr2Fe2O3S2 which are isostructural to La2Fe2O3Se2 and Sm2Ti2O3Sb2. Crystal structures of the new compounds Ce2Fe2O3S2 and Pr2Fe2O3S2 were determined from powder X-ray diffraction data. Magnetic measurements were performed for Ce2Fe2O3S2 and revealed behavior very similar to that of isostructural oxide chalcogenides of iron and pnictides of titanium. In particular, no superconductivity was observed down to 4 K. Crystal chemical factors determining the stability of the La2Fe2O3Se2 structure type are discussed.

Synthesis, crystal structure, and properties of novel perovskite oxychalcogenides, Ca2CuFeO3Ch (Ch = S, Se)

Two new perovskite oxychalcogenides, Ca2CuFeO3S and Ca2CuFeO3Se, have been synthesized in evacuated quartz tubes. They crystallize in P4/nmm space group with lattice parameters a = 3.8271(1), c = 14.9485(2) Å and a = 3.8605(1), c = 15.3030(2) Å for Ca2CuFeO3S and Ca2CuFeO3Se, respectively. They appear to be the first layered chalcogenide perovskites involving calcium and are structural analogs of the corresponding Sr and Ba compounds. The new compounds exhibit semiconducting properties with energy gap decreasing from the oxysulfide to the oxyselenide. Possibility of introducing Ca2+ into structures of known layered oxychalcogenides and oxypnictides is discussed.

Magnetic and Superconducting Properties of FeAs-based High-Tc Superconductors with Gd

We report on successful synthesis under high pressure of a series of polycrystalline GdFeAs O_{1-x}F_x high-Tc superconductors with different oxygen deficiency x=0.12 - 0.16 and also with no fluorine. We have found that the high-pressure synthesis technique is crucial for obtaining almost single-phase superconducting materials: by synthesizing the same compounds with no pressure in ampoules we obtained non-superconducting materials with an admixture of incidental phases. Critical temperature for all the materials was in the range 40 to 53K. The temperature derivative of the critical field dHc2/dT is remarkably high, indicating potentially high value of the second critical field Hc2 ~ 130T.
