Magnetic transition in the $J_\textrm{eff} = 1/2$ Kagomé system Sm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$

We present a study of Sm$_3$Sb$_3$Zn$_2$O$_{14}$ (SSZO) through magnetization and specific heat capacity $C_p(T)$ measurements. SSZO contains well separated planes of Sm$^{3+}$ magnetic ions on a Kagomé lattice. Though our magnetic susceptibility (where the data are limited down to 2\,K) does not show any anomaly, the $C_p(T)$ data which have been taken down to 0.35 K reveal a broad maximum at $T\sim1.5$\,K followed by a sharp peak at $T\sim0.5$\,K indicative of short-range correlations and long-range order, respectively.

Signatures of a spin-1/2 cooperative paramagnet in the diluted triangular lattice of Y$_2$CuTiO$_6$

We present a combination of thermodynamic and dynamic experimental signatures of a disorder driven dynamic cooperative paramagnet in a 50% site diluted triangular lattice spin-1/2 system, Y$_2$CuTiO$_6$. Magnetic ordering and spin freezing are absent down to 50 mK, far below the Curie Weiss scale of ~-134 K. We observe scaling collapses of the magnetic field- and temperature-dependent magnetic heat capacity and magnetisation data, respectively, in conformity with expectations from the random singlet physics. Our experiments establish the suppression of any freezing scale, if at all present, by more than three orders of magnitude, opening a plethora of interesting possibilities such as disorder-stabilized long range quantum entangled ground states.

LiZn$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{8}$: A new geometrically frustrated cluster spin-glass

We have investigated the structural and magnetic properties of a new cubic spinel LiZn$_{2}$V$_{3}$O$_{8}$ (LZVO) through x-ray diffraction, dc and ac susceptibility, magnetic relaxation, aging, memory effect, heat capacity and $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. A Curie-Weiss fit of the dc susceptibility $χ_{\mathrm{dc}}$($\mathit{T}$) yields a Curie-Weiss temperature $\mathrmθ_{\mathrm{CW}}$ = -185 K. This suggests strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions among the magnetic vanadium ions. The dc and ac susceptibility data indicate the spin-glass behavior below a freezing temperature $T_{f}$ $\simeq$ 3 K. The frequency dependence of the $T_{f}$ is characterized by the Vogel-Fulcher law and critical dynamic scaling behavior or power law. From both fitting, we obtained the value of the characteristic angular frequency $ω_{0}$ $\approx$ 3.56$\times$10$^{6}$ Hz, the dynamic exponent $\mathit{zv}$ $\approx$ 2.65, and the critical time constant $τ_{0}$ $\approx$ 1.82$\times$10$^{-6}$ s, which falls in the conventional range for typical cluster spin-glass (CSG) systems. The value of relative shift in freezing temperature $δT_{f}$ $\simeq$ 0.039 supports a CSG ground states. We also found aging phenomena and memory effects in LZVO. The asymmetric response of the magnetic relaxation below $T_{f}$ supports the hierarchical model. Heat capacity data show no long-range or short-range ordering down to 2 K. Only about 25% magnetic entropy change $(ΔS_{\mathrm{m}})$ signifies the presence of strong frustration in the system. The $^{7}$Li NMR spectra show a shift and broadening with decreasing temperature. The spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation rates show anomalies due to spin freezing around 3 K as the bulk magnetization.

Spin Liquid State in the 3D Frustrated Antiferromagnet PbCuTe2O6: NMR and muSR Studies

PbCuTe2O6 is a rare example of a spin liquid candidate featuring a three dimensional magnetic lattice. Strong geometric frustration arises from the dominant antiferromagnetic interaction which generates a hyperkagome network of Cu2+ ions although additional interactions enhance the magnetic lattice connectivity. Through a combination of magnetization measurements and local probe investigation by NMR and muSR down to 20 mK, we provide a robust evidence for the absence of magnetic freezing in the ground state. The local spin susceptibility probed by the NMR shift hardly deviates from the macroscopic one down to 1 K pointing to a homogeneous magnetic system with a low defect concentration. The saturation of the NMR shift and the sublinear power law temperature (T) evolution of the 1/T1 NMR relaxation rate at low T point to a non-singlet ground state favoring a gapless fermionic description of the magnetic excitations. Below 1 K a pronounced slowing down of the spin dynamics is witnessed, which may signal a reconstruction of spinon Fermi surface. Nonetheless, the compound remains in a fluctuating spin liquid state down to the lowest temperature of the present investigation.

Antiferromagnetism of Zn$_2$VO(PO$_4)_2$ and the dilution with Ti$^{4+}$

We report static and dynamic properties of the antiferromagnetic compound Zn$_{2}$(VO)(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$, and the consequences of non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ doping at the V$^{4+}$ site. $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) consistently show the formation of the long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_N= 3.8-3.9$\,K. The critical exponent $β=0.33 \pm 0.02$ estimated from the temperature dependence of the sublattice magnetization measured by $^{31}$P NMR at 9.4\,MHz is consistent with universality classes of three-dimensional spin models. The isotropic and axial hyperfine couplings between the $^{31}$P nuclei and V$^{4+}$ spins are $A_{\rm hf}^{\rm iso} = (9221 \pm 100)$ Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$ and $A_{\rm hf}^{\rm ax} = (1010 \pm 50)$ Oe/$μ_{\rm B}$, respectively. Magnetic susceptibility data above 6.5\,K and heat capacity data above 4.5\,K are well described by quantum Monte-Carlo simulations for the Heisenberg model on the square lattice with $J\simeq 7.7$\,K. This value of $J$ is consistent with the values obtained from the NMR shift, $1/T_1$ and electron spin resonance (ESR) intensity analysis. Doping Zn$_2$VO(PO$_4)_2$ with non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ leads to a marginal increase in the $J$ value and the overall dilution of the spin lattice. In contrast to the recent \textit{ab initio} results, we find neither evidence for the monoclinic structural distortion nor signatures of the magnetic one-dimensionality for doped samples with up to 15\% of Ti$^{4+}$. The Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ decreases linearly with increasing the amount of the non-magnetic dopant.

Observation of S = 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional magnetic and magneto-dielectric behavior in a cubic SrCuTe2O6

We investigate magnetic, thermal, and dielectric properties of SrCuTe2O6, which is isostructural to PbCuTe2O6, a recently found, Cu-based 3D frustrated magnet with a corner sharing triangular spin network having dominant first and second nearest neighbor (nn) couplings [B. Koteswararao, et al. Phys. Rev. B 90, 035141 (2014)]. Although SrCuTe2O6 has a structurally similar spin network, but the magnetic data exhibit the characteristic features of a typical quasi -one-dimensional magnet, which mainly resulted from the magnetically dominant third nn coupling, uniform chains. The magnetic properties of this system are studied via magnetization (M), heat capacity (Cp), dielectric constant, measurements along with ab-initio band structure calculations. Magnetic susceptibility chi(T) data show a broad maximum at 32 K and the system orders at low temperatures TN1=5.5 K and TN2=4.5 K, respectively. The analysis of chi(T) data gives an intra-chain coupling, J3/kB, to be about - 42 K with non-negligible frustrated inter-chain couplings (J1/kB and J2/kB). The hopping parameters obtained from LDA band structure calculations also suggest the presence of coupled uniform chains. The observation of simultaneous anomalies in dielectric constant at TN1 and TN2 suggests the presence of magneto-dielectric effect in SrCuTe2O6. A magnetic phase diagram is also built based on M, C p, and dielectric constant results.

Sc_{2}Ga_{2}CuO_{7}: A possible Quantum spin liquid near the percolation threshold

Sc$_{2}$Ga$_{2}$CuO$_{7}$ (SGCO) crystallizes in a hexagonal structure (space group: $P$$6$$_{3}/mmc$),\textcolor{black}{{} which can be seen as an alternating stacking of single and double triangular layers. Combining neutron, x-ray, and resonant x-ray diffraction we establish that the single triangular layers are mainly populated by non-magnetic Ga$^{3+}$ ions (85\% Ga and 15\% Cu), while the bi-layers have comparable population of Cu$^{2+}$ and Ga$^{3+}$} ions \textcolor{black}{(43\% Cu and 57\% Ga)}. Our susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 1.8 - 400 K give no indication of any spin-freezing or magnetic long-range order (LRO). We infer an effective paramagnetic moment $μ_{eff}=1.79\pm0.09$ $μ_{B}$ and a Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_{CW}$ of about $-44$ K, suggesting antiferromagnetic interactions between the Cu$^{2+}$($S=1/2$) ions. Low-temperature neutron powder diffraction data showed no evidence for LRO down to 1.5 K. In our specific heat data as well, no anomalies were found down to 0.35 K, in the field range 0-140 kOe.\textcolor{black}{{} The magnetic specific heat, $C_{m}$, exhibits a broad maximum at around 2.5 K followed by a nearly power law $C$$_{m}$$\propto$ $T$$^α$ behavior at lower temperatures, with $α$ increasing from }0.3\textcolor{black}{{} to} 1.9\textcolor{black}{{} as a function of field for fields upto 90 kOe and then remaining at 1.9 for fields upto 140 kOe. Our results point to a disordered ground state in SGCO. }

Magnetic properties and heat capacity of the three-dimensional frustrated S=1/2 antiferromagnet PbCuTe2O6

We report magnetic susceptibility (chi) and heat capacity Cp measurements along with ab-initio electronic structure calculations on PbCuTe2O6, a compound made up of a three dimensional 3D network of corner-shared triangular units. The presence of antiferromagnetic interactions is inferred from a Curie-Weiss temperature (theta_CW) of about -22 K from the chi(T) data. The magnetic heat capacity (Cm) data show a broad maximum at T^max ~ 1.15 K (i.e. T^max/theta_CW ~ 0.05), which is analogous to the the observed broad maximum in the Cm/T data of a hyper-Kagome system, Na4Ir3O8. In addition, Cm data exhibit a weak kink at T^* ~ 0.87 K. While the T^max is nearly unchanged, the T^* is systematically suppressed in an increasing magnetic field (H) up to 80 kOe. For H > 80 kOe, the Cm data at low temperatures exhibit a characteristic power-law (T^α) behavior with an exponent α slightly less than 2. Hopping integrals obtained from the electronic structure calculations show the presence of strongly frustrated 3D spin interactions along with non-negligible unfrustrated couplings. Our results suggest that PbCuTe2O6 is a candidate material for realizing a 3D quantum spin liquid state at high magnetic fields.

Unconventional magnetism in the spin-orbit driven Mott insulators Ba3MIr2O9 (M=Sc,Y)

We have carried out detailed bulk and local probe studies on the hexagonal oxides Ba3MIr2O9 (M=Sc,Y) where Ir is expected to have a fractional oxidation state of +4.5. In the structure, Ir-Ir dimers are arranged in an edge shared triangular network parallel to the ab plane. Whereas only weak anomalies are evident in the susceptibility data, clearer anomalies are present in the heat capacity data. Our 45Sc nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) lineshape (first order quadrupole split) is symmetric at room temperature but becomes progressively asymmetric with decreasing temperatures. This is suggestive of distortions in the structure which could arise from progressive tilt/rotation of the IrO6 octahedra with a decrease in temperature T. The 45Sc NMR spectral weight shifts near the reference frequency with decreasing T indicating the development of magnetic singlet regions. Around 10K, a significant change in the spectrum takes place with a large intensity appearing near the reference frequency but with the spectrum remaining multi-peak. It appears from our 45Sc NMR data that in Ba3ScIr2O9 significant disorder is still present below 10K. In the case of Ba3YIr2O9, the 89Y NMR spectral lines are asymmetric at high temperatures but become nearly symmetric (single magnetic environment) below T~70K. Our 89Y spectra and T1 measurements confirm the onset of long range ordering (LRO) from a bulk of the sample at 4K in this compound. Our results suggest that Ba3YIr2O9 might be structurally distorted at room temperature (via, for example, tilt/rotations of the IrO6 octahedra) but becomes progressively a regular triangular lattice with decreasing T. The effective magnetic moments and magnetic entropy changes are strongly reduced in Ba3YIr2O9 as compared to those expected for a S=1/2 system. Similar effects have been found in other iridates which naturally have strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC).

75As NMR local probe study of magnetism in (Eu1-xKx)Fe2As2

75As NMR measurements were performed as a function of temperature and doping in (Eu1-xKx)Fe2As2 (x=0,0.38,0.5,0.7) samples. The large Eu2+ moments and their fluctuations are found to dominate the 75As NMR properties. The 75As nuclei close to the Eu2+ moments likely have a very short spin-spin relaxation time (T2) and are wiped out of our measurement window. The 75As nuclei relatively far from Eu2+ moments are probed in this study. Increasing the Eu content progressively decreases the signal intensity with no signal found for the full-Eu sample (x=0). The large 75As NMR linewidth arises from an inhomogeneous magnetic environment around them. The spin lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) for x=0.5 and 0.7 samples is nearly independent of temperature above 100K and results from a coupling to paramagnetic fluctuations of the Eu2+ moments. The behavior of 1/T1 at lower temperatures has contributions from the antiferromagnetic fluctuations of the Eu2+ moments as also the fluctuations intrinsic to the FeAs planes and from superconductivity.

BaV3O8: A possible Majumdar-Ghosh system with S=1/2

BaV3O8 contains both magnetic V4+(S=1/2) ions and non-magnetic V5+(S=0) ions. The V4+ ions are arranged in a coupled Majumdar-Ghosh chain like network. Our magnetic susceptibility chi(T) data fit well with the Curie-Weiss formula in the temperature range of 80-300K and it yields a Curie constant C=0.39cm3K/mole-V4+ and an antiferromagnetic Weiss temperature theta=-26K. The chi(T) curve shows a broad maximum at T~25K indicative of short-range order (SRO) and an anomaly corresponding to long-range order (LRO) at TN~6K. The value of the frustration index (f=mod[theta/TN]~5) suggests that the system is moderately frustrated. Above the LRO temperature the experimental magnetic susceptibility data match well with the coupled Majumdar-Ghosh chain model with the ratio of the nnn (next-nearest neighbor) to nn (nearest neighbor) magnetic coupling alpha=2 and Jnnn/kB=40K. In a mean-field approach when considering the inter-chain interactions, we obtain the total inter-chain coupling to be about 16K. The LRO anomaly at TN is also observe in the specific heat Cp(T) data and is not sensitive to an applied magnetic field up to 90kOe. A 51V NMR signal corresponding to the non-magnetic vanadium was observed. Anomalies at 6K were observed in the variation with temperature of the 51V NMR linewidth and in the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1, indicating that they are sensitive to the LRO onset and fluctuations at the magnetic V sites. The existence of two components (one short and another long) is observed in the spin-spin relaxation rate 1/T2 data in the vicinity of TN. The shorter component seems to be intimately connected with the magnetically ordered state. We suggest that both magnetically ordered and non-long range ordered (non-LRO) regions coexist in this compound below the long range ordering temperature.

Frustration induced disordered magnetism in Ba3RuTi2O9

The title compound Ba3RuTi2O9 crystallizes with a hexagonal unit cell. It contains layers of edge shared triangular network of Ru4+ (S=1) ions. Magnetic susceptibility chi(T) and heat capacity data show no long range magnetic ordering down to 1.8K. A Curie-Weiss (CW) fitting of chi(T) yields a large antiferromagnetic CW temperature theta_CW=-166K. However, in low field, a splitting of zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) chi(T) is observed below ~30K. Our measurements suggest that Ba3RuTi2O9 is a highly frustrated system but only a small fraction of the spins in this system undergo a transition to a frozen magnetic state below ~30K.

PbCu3TeO7: An S=1/2 staircase Kagome lattice with significant intra- and inter-plane couplings

We have synthesized polycrystalline and single crystal samples of PbCu3TeO7 and studied its properties via magnetic susceptibility chi(T) and heat-capacity Cp(T) measurements and also electronic structure calculations. Whereas the crystal structure is suggestive of the presence of a quasi-2D network of Cu2+ (S = 1/2) buckled staircase Kagome layers, the chi(T) data show magnetic anisotropy and three magnetic anomalies at temperatures, TN1 ~ 36 K, TN2 ~ 25 K, TN3 ~ 17 K, respectively. The chi(T) data follow the Curie-Weiss law above 200 K and a Curie-Weiss temperature Theta_CW ~ -150 K is obtained. The data deviate from the simple Curie-Weiss law below 200 K, which is well above TN1, suggesting the presence of competing magnetic interactions. The magnetic anomaly at TN3 appears to be of first-order from magnetization measurements, although our heat-capacity Cp(T) results do not display any anomaly at TN3. The hopping integrals obtained from our electronic structure calculations suggest the presence of significant intra-Kagome (next-nearest neighbor and diagonal) and inter-Kagome couplings. These couplings take the PbCu3TeO7 system away from a disordered ground state and lead to long-range order, in contrast to what might be expected for an ideal (isotropic) 2D Kagome system.

Possible spin-orbit driven spin-liquid ground state in the double perovskite phase of Ba3YIr2O9

We report the structural transformation of hexagonal Ba3YIr2O9 to a cubic double perovskite form (stable in ambient conditions) under an applied pressure of 8GPa at 1273K. While the ambient pressure (AP) synthesized sample undergoes long-range magnetic ordering at 4K, the high pressure(HP) synthesized sample does not order down to 2K as evidenced from our susceptibility, heat capacity and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Further, for the HP sample, our heat capacity data have the form gamma*T+beta*T3 in the temperature (T) range of 2-10K with the Sommerfeld coefficient gamma=10mJ/mol-Ir K2. The 89Y NMR shift has no T-dependence in the range of 4-120K and its spin-lattice relaxation rate varies linearly with T in the range of 8-45K (above which it is T-independent). Resistance measurements of both the samples confirm that they are semiconducting. Our data provide evidence for the formation of a 5d based, gapless, quantum spin-liquid (QSL) in the cubic (HP) phase of Ba3YIr2O9. In this picture, the T term in the heat capacity and the linear variation of 89Y 1/T1 arises from excitations out of a spinon Fermi surface. Our findings lend credence to the theoretical suggestion [G. Chen, R. Pereira, and L. Balents, Phys. Rev. B 82, 174440 (2010)] that strong spin-orbit coupling can enhance quantum fluctuations and lead to a QSL state in the double perovskite lattice.

Magnetic behavior of Ba_{3}Cu_{3}Sc_{4}O_{12}

The chain-like system Ba_{3}Cu_{3}Sc_4O_{12} has potentially interesting magnetic properties due to the presence of Cu^{2+} and a structure-suggested low-dimensionality. We present magnetization M versus magnetic field H and temperature T, T- and H-dependent heat-capacity C_{p}, ^{45}Sc nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), muon spin rotation (μSR), neutron diffraction measurements and electronic structure calculations for Ba_{3}Cu_{3}Sc_{4}O_{12}. The onset of magnetic long-range antiferromagnetic order at T_{N} ~16 K is consistently evidenced from the whole gamut of our data. A significant sensitivity of T_{N} to the applied magnetic field H (T_{N}~0 K for H=70 kOe) is also reported. Coupled with a ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature (θ_{CW}~65 K) in the susceptibility (from a 100 K-300 K fit), it is indicative of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. These indications are corroborated by our density functional theory based electronic structure calculations where we find the presence of significant ferromagnetic couplings between some copper ions whereas AF couplings were present between some others. Our experimental data, backed by our theoretical calculations, rule out one-dimensional magnetic behaviour suggested by the structure and the observed long-range order is due to the presence of non-negligible magnetic interactions between adjacent as well as next-nearest chains.

Spin liquid behaviour in Jeff=1/2 triangular lattice Ba3IrTi2O9

Ba3IrTi2O9 crystallizes in a hexagonal structure consisting of a layered triangular arrangement of Ir4+ (Jeff=1/2). Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data show no magnetic ordering down to 0.35K inspite of a strong magnetic coupling as evidenced by a large Curie-Weiss temperature=-130K. The magnetic heat capacity follows a power law at low temperature. Our measurements suggest that Ba3IrTi2O9 is a 5d, Ir-based (Jeff=1/2), quantum spin liquid on a 2D triangular lattice.

119Sn NMR probe of magnetic fluctuations in SnO2 nanoparticles

119Sn nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) in SnO2 nanoparticles were measured as a function of temperature and compared with those of SnO2 bulk sample. A 15% loss of 119Sn NMR signal intensity for the nano sample compared to the bulk sample was observed. This is indicative of ferromagnetism from a small fraction of the sample. Another major finding is that the recovery of the 119Sn longitudinal nuclear magnetization in the nano sample follows a stretched exponential behavior, as opposed to that in bulk which is exponential. Further, the 119Sn 1/T1 at room temperature is found to be much higher for the nano sample than for its bulk counterpart. These results indicate the presence of magnetic fluctuations in SnO2 nanoparticles in contrast to the bulk (non-nano) which is diamagnetic. These local moments could arise from surface defects in the nanoparticles.

75As NMR probe of antiferromagnetic fluctuations in Ba(Fe1-xRux)2As2

The evolution of 75As NMR parameters with composition and temperature was probed in the Ba(Fe1-xRux)2As2 system where Fe is replaced by isovalent Ru. While the Ru-end member was found to be a conventional Fermi liquid, the composition (x=0.5) corresponding to the highest Tc (20K) in this system shows an upturn in 75As 1/T1T below about 80 K evidencing the presence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations. These results are similar to those obtained in another system with isovalent substitution BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 [Y. Nakai, T. Iye, S. Kitagawa, K. Ishida, H. Ikeda, S. Kasahara, H. Shishido, T. Shibauchi, Y. Matsuda, and T. Terashima, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 107003 (2010)] and point to the possible role of AFM fluctuations in driving superconductivity.

Magnetic properties and spin dynamics of 3d-4f molecular complexes

We present the magnetic properties of three recently synthesized binuclear molecular complexes [NiNd], [NiGd] and [ZnGd] investigated by dc magnetization and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. The high-temperature magnetic properties are related to the independent paramagnetic behavior of the two magnetic metal ions within the binuclear entities both in [NiNd] and [NiGd]. On lowering the temperature, the formation of a magnetic dimer, with a low-spin ground state due to antiferromagnetic interaction (J/kB = -25 K) between Ni2+ and Nd3+, is found in the case of [NiNd], while in [NiGd] a ferromagnetic interaction (J/kB = 3.31 K) between the magnetic ions leads to a high-spin (S = 9/2) ground state. The temperature dependence of the proton nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 in [NiNd] is driven by the fluctuation of the hyperfine field at the nuclear site due to relaxation of the magnetization. At high temperature the independent Ni2+ and Nd3+ spins fluctuate fast while at low temperature we observe a slowing down of the fluctuation of the total magnetization of the dimer because of the insurgence of antiferromagnetic spin correlations. The relaxation mechanism in [NiNd] at low temperature is interpreted by a single, temperature dependent, correlation frequency wc\simT^3.5, which reflects the life time broadening of the exchange coupled spins via spin-phonon interaction. The proton NMR signal in [NiGd] could be detected just at room temperature, due to the shortening of relaxation times when T is decreased. The magnetic properties of [ZnGd] are the ones expected from a weakly interacting assembly of isolated moments except for anomalies in the susceptibility and NMR results below 15 K which currently cannot be explained.

Impurity effects in coupled-ladder BiCu2PO6 studied by NMR and quantum Monte Carlo simulations

We present a 31P NMR study of the coupled spin 1/2 ladder compound BiCu2PO6. In the pure material, intrinsic susceptibility and dynamics show a spin gap of about . Substitution of non magnetic Zn or magnetic Ni impurity at Cu site induces a staggered magnetization which results in a broadening of the 31P NMR line, while susceptibility far from the defects is unaffected. The effect of Ni on the NMR line broadening is twice that of Zn, which is consistent with Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations assuming that Ni couples ferromagnetically to its adjacent Cu. The induced moment follows a 1/T temperature dependence due to the Curie-like development of the moment amplitude while its extension saturates and does not depend on impurity content or nature. This allow us to verify the generically expected scenario for impurity doping and to extend it to magnetic impurity case: in an antiferromagnetically correlated low dimensional spin system with antiferromagnetic correlations, any type of impurity induces a staggered moment at low temperature, whose extension is not linked to the impurity nature but to the intrinsic physics at play in the undoped pure system, from 1D to 2D systems.

Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity of a novel antiferromagnet: LiNi2P3O10 and the effect of doping

We report the synthesis, x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on polycrystalline samples of undoped LiNi2P3O10 and samples with non-magnetic impurity (Zn2+, S = 0) and magnetic impurity (Cu2+, S = 1/2) at the Ni site. The magnetic susceptibility data show a broad maximum at around 10 K and a small anomaly at about 7 K in the undoped sample. There is a lambda-like anomaly in the specific heat at 7 K, possibly due to the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering in the system. The magnetic entropy change at the ordering temperature is close to the value corresponding to Rln(2S+1) expected for an S = 1 system. The temperature corresponding to the broad maximum and the ordering temperature both decrease on Zn and Cu substitutions and also in applied magnetic fields.

Doping effects in the coupled, two-leg spin ladder BiCu2PO6

We report preparation, x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility chi(T) and heat capacity Cp(T) measurements on the undoped samples as also samples with Zn-doped (S = 0) at Cu site, Ni doped (S = 1) at Cu site, and Ca-doped (holes) at Bi site in the coupled two-leg spin ladder system BiCu2PO6. While, Zn shows complete solid solubility, Ni could be doped to about 20% and Ca to about 15%. Magnetization and heat capacity data in the undoped compound point towards the existence of frustration effects. In all the samples, the chi(T) at low temperature increases with doping content. The Zn-induced susceptibility is smaller than that due to effective S=1/2 moments possibly due to frustrating next-nearest-neighbor interactions along the leg. For Zn content x > 0.01, chi(T) deviates from the Curie-law at low temperatures. The magnetic specific heat data Cm(T) for the Zn-doped samples show weak anomalies at low temperature in agreement with chi(T) behavior. The anomalies are suggestive of spin freezing at low-T. In contrast, prominent effects are observed in chi(T) and Cm(T) on Ni-doped samples. The zero-field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) chi(T) data are different from each other at low temperature unlike that for Zn doped samples, clearly indicating a transition to a spin-glass like phase. No anomalies were found in Ca- or Pb-doped samples.

31P NMR study of Na2CuP2O7: a S=1/2 two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnetic system

The magnetic properties of Na2CuP2O7 were investigated by means of 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. We report the 31P NMR shift, the spin-lattice 1/T1, and spin-spin 1/T2 relaxation-rate data as a function of temperature T. The temperature dependence of the NMR shift K(T) is well described by the S=1/2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (HAF) model with an intraplanar exchange of J/k_B \simeq 18\pm2 K and a hyperfine coupling A = (3533\pm185) Oe/mu_B. The 31P NMR spectrum was found to broaden abruptly below T \sim 10 K signifying some kind of transition. However, no anomaly was noticed in the bulk susceptibility data down to 1.8 K. The heat capacity appears to have a weak maximum around 10 K. With decrease in temperatures, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 decreases monotonically and appears to agree well with the high temperature series expansion expression for a S = 1/2 2D square lattice.

89Y NMR Probe of Zn Induced Local Magnetism in YBa2(Cu(1-y)Zn(y))3O(6+x)

We present detailed data and analysis of the effects of Zn substitution on the planar Cu site in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ (YBCO$_{6+x}$) as evidenced from our $^{89}$Y NMR measurements on oriented powders. For $x<<1$ we find additional NMR lines which are associated with the Zn substitution. From our data on the intensities and temperature dependence of the shift, width, and spin-lattice relaxation rate of these resonances, we conclude that the spinless Zn 3$d$$^{10}$ state induces local moments on the near-neighbour ($% nn$) Cu atoms. Additionally, we conjecture that the local moments actually extend to the farther Cu atoms with the magnetization alternating in sign at subsequent $nn$ sites. We show that this analysis is compatible with ESR data taken on dilute Gd doped (on the Y site) and on neutron scattering data reported recently on Zn substituted YBCO$_{6 + x}$. For optimally doped compounds $^{89}$Y $nn$ resonances are not detected, but a large $T$% -dependent contribution to the $^{89}$Y NMR linewidth is evidenced and is also attributed to the occurence of a weak induced local moment near the Zn. These results are compatible with macroscopic magnetic measurements performed on YBCO$_{6 + x}$ samples prepared specifically in order to minimize the content of impurity phases. We find significant differences between the present results on the underdoped YBCO$_{6 + x}$ samples and $% ^{27}$Al NMR data taken on Al$^{3+}$ substituted on the Cu site in optimally doped La$_2$CuO$_4$. Further experimental work is needed to clarify the detailed evolution of the impurity induced magnetism with hole content in the cuprates.
