How Universal is the SFR - H2 Relation?

It is a well established empirical fact that the surface density of the star formation rate, Sigma_SFR, strongly correlates with the surface density of molecular hydrogen, Sigma_H2, at least when averaged over large (~kpc) scales. Much less is known, however, if (and how) the Sigma_SFR-Sigma_H2 relation depends on environmental parameters, such as the metallicity or the UV radiation field in the interstellar medium (ISM). Furthermore, observations indicate that the scatter in the Sigma_SFR-Sigma_H2 relation increases rapidly with decreasing averaging scale. How the scale-dependent scatter is generated and how one recovers a tight ~ kpc scale Sigma_SFR-Sigma_H2 relation in the first place is still largely debated. Here, these questions are explored with hydrodynamical simulations that follow the formation and destruction of H2, include radiative transfer of UV radiation, and resolve the ISM on ~60 pc scales. We find that within the considered range of H2 surface densities (10-100 Msun/pc^2) the Sigma_SFR-Sigma_H2 relation is steeper in environments of low metallicity and/or high radiation fields (compared to the Galaxy), that the star formation rate at a given H2 surface density is larger, and the scatter is increased. Deviations from a "universal" Sigma_SFR-Sigma_H2 relation should be particularly relevant for high redshift galaxies or for low-metallicity dwarfs at z~0. We also find that the use of time-averaged SFRs produces a large, scale dependent scatter in the Sigma_SFR-Sigma_H2 relation. Given the plethora of observational data expected from upcoming surveys such as ALMA the scale-scatter relation may indeed become a valuable tool for determining the physical mechanisms connecting star formation and H2 formation.

Mechanism of Pion Production in $alpha$p Scattering at 1 GeV/nucleon

The one-pion and two-pion production in the p(alpha, alpha prime)X reaction at an energy of E{alpha} = 4.2 GeV has been studied by simultaneous registration of the scattered alpha particles and the secondary pion or proton. The obtained results demonstrate that the inelastic alpha-particle scattering on the proton at the energy of the experiment proceeds either through excitation and decay of Delta resonance in the projectile or through excitation in the target proton of the Roper resonance, which decays mainly on a nucleon and a pion or a nucleon and a sigma meson - system of two pions in the isospin I = 0, S-wave.

Chandra Cluster Cosmology Project II: Samples and X-ray Data Reduction

We discuss the measurements of the galaxy cluster mass functions at z=~0.05 and z=~0.5 using high-quality Chandra observations of samples derived from the ROSAT PSPC All-Sky and 400deg^2 surveys. We provide a full reference for the data analysis procedures, present updated calibration of relations between the total cluster mass and its X-ray indicators (T_X, Mgas, and Y_X) based on a subsample of low-z relaxed clusters, and present a first measurement of the evolving L_X-Mtot relation (with Mtot estimated from Y_X) obtained from a well-defined statistically complete cluster sample and with appropriate corrections for the Malmquist bias applied. Finally, we present the derived cluster mass functions, estimate the systematic uncertainties in this measurement, and discuss the calculation of the likelihood function. We confidently measure the evolution in the cluster comoving number density at a fixed mass threshold, e.g., by a factor of 5.0 +- 1.2 at M_500=2.5e14 h^-1 Msun between z=0 and 0.5. This evolution reflects the growth of density perturbations and can be used for the cosmological constraints complementing those from the distance-redshift relation.

Chandra Cluster Cosmology Project III: Cosmological Parameter Constraints

Chandra observations of large samples of galaxy clusters detected in X-rays by ROSAT provide a new, robust determination of the cluster mass functions at low and high redshifts. Statistical and systematic errors are now sufficiently small, and the redshift leverage sufficiently large for the mass function evolution to be used as a useful growth of structure based dark energy probe. In this paper, we present cosmological parameter constraints obtained from Chandra observations of 36 clusters with <z>=0.55 derived from 400deg^2 ROSAT serendipitous survey and 49 brightest z=~0.05 clusters detected in the All-Sky Survey. Evolution of the mass function between these redshifts requires Omega_Lambda>0 with a ~5sigma significance, and constrains the dark energy equation of state parameter to w0=-1.14+-0.21, assuming constant w and flat universe. Cluster information also significantly improves constraints when combined with other methods. Fitting our cluster data jointly with the latest supernovae, WMAP, and baryonic acoustic oscillations measurements, we obtain w0=-0.991+-0.045 (stat) +-0.039 (sys), a factor of 1.5 reduction in statistical uncertainties, and nearly a factor of 2 improvement in systematics compared to constraints that can be obtained without clusters. The joint analysis of these four datasets puts a conservative upper limit on the masses of light neutrinos, Sum m_nu<0.33 eV at 95% CL. We also present updated measurements of Omega_M*h and sigma_8 from the low-redshift cluster mass function.

Search for eta-mesic nuclei in photoproduction processes

We present preliminary results of an experiment performed at the 1-GeV electron synchrotron of the Lebedev Physical Institute. Using the bremsstrahlung photon beam with the end-point energy of 650-850 MeV and the carbon target, correlated pi+/n pairs with opening angle 180 deg and energies E_pi=300 MeV, E_n=100 MeV have been observed. They arise from the process gamma + 12C -> N + eta + (A-1) -> N + pi+ + n + (A-2) and provide evidence for the existence of eta-11B and eta-11C eta-mesic nuclei.

The Large-Scale Distribution of Quasars

We report the investigation of spatial distribution of quasars using two different methods: the statistical study by means of 2-point correlation function and direct search for structures such as previously reported Large Quasar Groups. Having analyzed the combined sample of eight homogeneous quasar surveys (totalling near 2200 objects), we detected strong clustering at scales $r\leq 20h^{-1}$ Mpc ($H_0=100h$ and $q_0=0.5$) which seems, however, to be redshift dependent. Using reasonable selection criteria we have also sought for Large Quasar Groups (LQG) similar to those which were earlier found observationally. We discuss the properties of the detected groups and their implications for cosmology. We also discuss the suitability of the present data for getting the reliable statistical inference on quasar clustering.
