Engineered magnetization and exchange stiffness in direct-write Co-Fe nanoelements

Media with engineered magnetization are essential building blocks in superconductivity, magnetism and magnon spintronics. However, the established thin-film and lithographic techniques insufficiently suit the realization of planar components with on-demand-tailored magnetization in the lateral dimension. Here, we demonstrate the engineering of the magnetic properties of CoFe-based nanodisks fabricated by the mask-less technique of focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID). The material composition in the nanodisks is tuned \emph{in-situ} via the e-beam waiting time in the FEBID process and their post-growth irradiation with Ga ions. The magnetization $M_s$ and exchange stiffness $A$ of the disks are deduced from perpendicular ferromagnetic resonance measurements. The achieved $M_s$ variation in the broad range from $720$ emu/cm$^3$ to $1430$ emu/cm$^3$ continuously bridges the gap between the $M_s$ values of such widely used magnonic materials as permalloy and CoFeB. The presented approach paves a way towards nanoscale 2D and 3D systems with controllable and space-varied magnetic properties.

On concentrators and related approximation constants

Pippenger ([Pippenger, 1977]) showed the existence of $(6m,4m,3m,6)$-concentrator for each positive integer $m$ using a probabilistic method. We generalize his approach and prove existence of $(6m,4m,3m,5.05)$-concentrator (which is no longer regular, but has fewer edges). We apply this result to improve the constant of approximation of almost additive set functions by additive set functions from $44.5$ (established in [Kalton, Roberts, 1983]) to $39$. We show a more direct connection of the latter problem to the Whitney type estimate for approximation of continuous functions on a cube in $\mathbb{R}^d$ by linear functions, and improve the estimate of this Whitney constant from $802$ (proved in [Brudnyi, Kalton, 2000]) to $73$.

Mesh ratios for best-packing and limits of minimal energy configurations

For $N$-point best-packing configurations $ω_N$ on a compact metric space $(A,ρ)$, we obtain estimates for the mesh-separation ratio $γ(ω_N,A)$, which is the quotient of the covering radius of $ω_N$ relative to $A$ and the minimum pairwise distance between points in $ω_N$. For best-packing configurations $ω_N$ that arise as limits of minimal Riesz $s$-energy configurations as $s\to \infty$, we prove that $γ(ω_N,A)\le 1$ and this bound can be attained even for the sphere. In the particular case when N=5 on $S^2$ with $ρ$ the Euclidean metric, we prove our main result that among the infinitely many 5-point best-packing configurations there is a unique configuration, namely a square-base pyramid $ω_5^*$, that is the limit (as $s\to \infty$) of 5-point $s$-energy minimizing configurations. Moreover, $γ(ω_5^*,S^2)=1$.

Minimal $N$-Point Diameters and $f$-Best-Packing Constants in $R^d$

In terms of the minimal $N$-point diameter $D_d(N)$ for $R^d,$ we determine, for a class of continuous real-valued functions $f$ on $[0,+\infty],$ the $N$-point $f$-best-packing constant $\min\{f(\|x-y\|)\, :\, x,y\in \R^d\}$, where the minimum is taken over point sets of cardinality $N.$ We also show that $$ N^{1/d}Δ_d^{-1/d}-2\le D_d(N)\le N^{1/d}Δ_d^{-1/d}, \quad N\ge 2,$$ where $Δ_d$ is the maximal sphere packing density in $\R^d$. Further, we provide asymptotic estimates for the $f$-best-packing constants as $N\to\infty$.
