Universal polar dual pairs of spherical codes found in E8E_8 and Λ24Λ_{24}

We identify universal polar dual pairs of spherical codes CC and DD such that for a large class of potential functions hh the minima of the discrete hh-potential of CC on the sphere occur at the points of DD and vice versa. Moreover, the minimal values of their normalized potentials are equal. These codes arise from the known sharp codes embedded in the even unimodular extremal lattices E8E_8 and Λ24Λ_{24} (Leech lattice). This embedding allows us to use the lattices' properties to find new universal polar dual pairs. In the process we extensively utilize the interplay between the binary Golay codes and the Leech lattice. As a byproduct of our analysis, we identify a new universally optimal (in the sense of energy) code in the projective space RP21\mathbb{RP}^{21} with 14081408 points (lines). Furthermore, we extend the Delsarte-Goethals-Seidel definition of derived codes from their seminal 19771977 paper and generalize their Theorem 8.2 to show that if a ττ-design is enclosed in k≤τk\leq τ parallel hyperplanes, then each of the hyperplane's sub-code is a (τ+1−k)(τ+1-k)-design in the ambient subspace.

A Comparison of Popular Point Configurations on S2\mathbb{S}^2

There are many ways to generate a set of nodes on the sphere for use in a variety of problems in numerical analysis. We present a survey of quickly generated point sets on S2\mathbb{S}^2, examine their equidistribution properties, separation, covering, and mesh ratio constants and present a new point set, equal area icosahedral points, with low mesh ratio. We analyze numerically the leading order asymptotics for the Riesz and logarithmic potential energy for these configurations with total points N<50,000N<50,000 and present some new conjectures.

Generating Point Configurations via Hypersingular Riesz Energy With an External Field

For a compact d d -dimensional rectifiable subset of Rp \mathbb{R}^{p} we study asymptotic properties as N→∞ N\to\infty of NN-point configurations minimizing the energy arising from a Riesz s s -potential 1/rs 1/r^s and an external field in the hypersingular case s≥d s\geq d. Formulas for the weak∗ ^* limit of normalized counting measures of such optimal point sets and the first-order asymptotic values of minimal energy are obtained. As an application, we derive a method for generating configurations whose normalized counting measures converge to a given absolutely continuous measure supported on a rectifiable subset of Rp \mathbb{R}^{p} . Results on separation and covering properties of discrete minimizers are given. Our theorems are illustrated with several numerical examples.

Universal lower bounds for potential energy of spherical codes

We derive and investigate lower bounds for the potential energy of finite spherical point sets (spherical codes). Our bounds are optimal in the following sense -- they cannot be improved by employing polynomials of the same or lower degrees in the Delsarte-Yudin method. However, improvements are sometimes possible and we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of such better bounds. All our bounds can be obtained in a unified manner that does not depend on the potential function, provided the potential is given by an absolutely monotone function of the inner product between pairs of points, and this is the reason for us to call them universal. We also establish a criterion for a given code of dimension nn and cardinality NN not to be LP-universally optimal, e.g. we show that two codes conjectured by Ballinger et al to be universally optimal are not LP-universally optimal.

Universal upper and lower bounds on energy of spherical designs

Linear programming (polynomial) techniques are used to obtain lower and upper bounds for the potential energy of spherical designs. This approach gives unified bounds that are valid for a large class of potential functions. Our lower bounds are optimal for absolutely monotone potentials in the sense that for the linear programming technique they cannot be improved by using polynomials of the same or lower degree. When additional information about the structure (upper and lower bounds for the inner products) of the designs is known, improvements on the bounds are obtained. Furthermore, we provide `test functions' for determining when the linear programming lower bounds for energy can be improved utilizing higher degree polynomials. We also provide some asymptotic results for these energy bounds.

Periodic Discrete Energy for Long-Range Potentials

We consider periodic energy problems in Euclidean space with a special emphasis on long-range potentials that cannot be defined through the usual infinite sum. One of our main results builds on more recent developments of Ewald summation to define the periodic energy corresponding to a large class of long-range potentials. Two particularly interesting examples are the logarithmic potential and the Riesz potential when the Riesz parameter is smaller than the dimension of the space. For these examples, we use analytic continuation methods to provide concise formulas for the periodic kernel in terms of the Epstein Hurwitz Zeta function. We apply our energy definition to deduce several properties of the minimal energy including the asymptotic order of growth and the distribution of points in energy minimizing configurations as the number of points becomes large. We conclude with some detailed calculations in the case of one dimension, which shows the utility of this approach.

Low complexity methods for discretizing manifolds via Riesz energy minimization

Let AA be a compact dd-rectifiable set embedded in Euclidean space $\RR^p$, d≤pd\le p. For a given continuous distribution σ(x)σ(x) with respect to dd-dimensional Hausdorff measure on AA, our earlier results provided a method for generating NN-point configurations on AA that have asymptotic distribution σ(x)σ(x) as N→∞N\to \infty; moreover such configurations are "quasi-uniform" in the sense that the ratio of the covering radius to the separation distance is bounded independent of NN. The method is based upon minimizing the energy of NN particles constrained to AA interacting via a weighted power law potential w(x,y)∣x−y∣−sw(x,y)|x-y|^{-s}, where s>ds>d is a fixed parameter and w(x,y)=(σ(x)σ(y))−(s/2d)w(x,y)=\left(σ(x)σ(y)\right)^{-({s}/{2d})}. Here we show that one can generate points on AA with the above mentioned properties keeping in the energy sums only those pairs of points that are located at a distance of at most rN=CNN−1/dr_N=C_N N^{-1/d} from each other, with CNC_N being a positive sequence tending to infinity arbitrarily slowly. To do this we minimize the energy with respect to a varying truncated weight $v_N(x,y)=Φ\(\left|x-y\right|/r_N\)w(x,y)$, where Φ:(0,∞)→[0,∞)Φ:(0,\infty)\to [0,\infty) is a bounded function with Φ(t)=0Φ(t)=0, t≥1t\geq 1, and lim⁡t→0+Φ(t)=1\lim_{t\to 0^+}Φ(t)=1. This reduces, under appropriate assumptions, the complexity of generating NN point `low energy' discretizations to order NCNdN C_N^d computations.

Polarization optimality of equally spaced points on the circle for discrete potentials

We prove a conjecture of Ambrus, Ball and Erdélyi that equally spaced points maximize the minimum of discrete potentials on the unit circle whenever the potential is of the form \sum_{k=1}^n f(d(z,z_k)), where f:[0,π]→[0,∞]f:[0,π]\to [0,\infty] is non-increasing and strictly convex and d(z,w)d(z,w) denotes the geodesic distance between zz and ww on the circle.

Mesh ratios for best-packing and limits of minimal energy configurations

For NN-point best-packing configurations ωNω_N on a compact metric space (A,ρ)(A,ρ), we obtain estimates for the mesh-separation ratio γ(ωN,A)γ(ω_N,A), which is the quotient of the covering radius of ωNω_N relative to AA and the minimum pairwise distance between points in ωNω_N. For best-packing configurations ωNω_N that arise as limits of minimal Riesz ss-energy configurations as s→∞s\to \infty, we prove that γ(ωN,A)≤1γ(ω_N,A)\le 1 and this bound can be attained even for the sphere. In the particular case when N=5 on S2S^2 with ρρ the Euclidean metric, we prove our main result that among the infinitely many 5-point best-packing configurations there is a unique configuration, namely a square-base pyramid ω5∗ω_5^*, that is the limit (as s→∞s\to \infty) of 5-point ss-energy minimizing configurations. Moreover, γ(ω5∗,S2)=1γ(ω_5^*,S^2)=1.

Minimal NN-Point Diameters and ff-Best-Packing Constants in RdR^d

In terms of the minimal NN-point diameter Dd(N)D_d(N) for Rd,R^d, we determine, for a class of continuous real-valued functions ff on [0,+∞],[0,+\infty], the NN-point ff-best-packing constant min⁡{f(∥x−y∥) : x,y∈Rd}\min\{f(\|x-y\|)\, :\, x,y\in \R^d\}, where the minimum is taken over point sets of cardinality N.N. We also show that N1/dΔd−1/d−2≤Dd(N)≤N1/dΔd−1/d,N≥2, N^{1/d}Δ_d^{-1/d}-2\le D_d(N)\le N^{1/d}Δ_d^{-1/d}, \quad N\ge 2, where ΔdΔ_d is the maximal sphere packing density in Rd\R^d. Further, we provide asymptotic estimates for the ff-best-packing constants as N→∞N\to\infty.

The next-order term for optimal Riesz and logarithmic energy asymptotics on the sphere

We survey known results and present estimates and conjectures for the next-order term in the asymptotics of the optimal logarithmic energy and Riesz ss-energy of NN points on the unit sphere in Rd+1\mathbb{R}^{d+1}, d≥1d\geq 1. The conjectures are based on analytic continuation assumptions (with respect to ss) for the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion (as N→∞N\to \infty) of the optimal ss-energy.

Quasi-uniformity of Minimal Weighted Energy Points on Compact Metric Spaces

For a closed subset KK of a compact metric space AA possessing an αα-regular measure μμ with μ(K)>0μ(K)>0, we prove that whenever s>αs>α, any sequence of weighted minimal Riesz ss-energy configurations ωN={xi,N(s)}i=1Nω_N=\{x_{i,N}^{(s)}\}_{i=1}^N on KK (for `nice' weights) is quasi-uniform in the sense that the ratios of its mesh norm to separation distance remain bounded as NN grows large. Furthermore, if KK is an αα-rectifiable compact subset of Euclidean space (αα an integer) with positive and finite αα-dimensional Hausdorff measure, it is possible to generate such a quasi-uniform sequence of configurations that also has (as N→∞N\to \infty) a prescribed positive continuous limit distribution with respect to αα-dimensional Hausdorff measure. As a consequence of our energy related results for the unweighted case, we deduce that if AA is a compact C1C^1 manifold without boundary, then there exists a sequence of NN-point best-packing configurations on AA whose mesh-separation ratios have limit superior (as N→∞N\to \infty) at most 2.

Discrete Energy Asymptotics on a Riemannian circle

We derive the complete asymptotic expansion in terms of powers of NN for the geodesic ff-energy of NN equally spaced points on a rectifiable simple closed curve ΓΓ in Rp{\mathbb R}^p, p≥2p\geq2, as N→∞N \to \infty. For ff decreasing and convex, such a point configuration minimizes the ff-energy ∑j≠kf(d(xj,xk))\sum_{j\neq k}f(d(\mathbf{x}_j, \mathbf{x}_k)), where dd is the geodesic distance (with respect to ΓΓ) between points on ΓΓ. Completely monotonic functions, analytic kernel functions, Laurent series, and weighted kernel functions ff are studied. % Of particular interest are the geodesic Riesz potential 1/ds1/d^s (s≠0s \neq 0) and the geodesic logarithmic potential log⁡(1/d)\log(1/d). By analytic continuation we deduce the expansion for all complex values of ss.

The Riesz energy of the NN-th roots of unity: an asymptotic expansion for large NN

We derive the complete asymptotic expansion in terms of powers of NN for the Riesz ss-energy of NN equally spaced points on the unit circle as N→∞N\to \infty. For s≥−2s\ge -2, such points form optimal energy NN-point configurations with respect to the Riesz potential 1/rs1/r^{s}, s≠0s\neq0, where rr is the Euclidean distance between points. By analytic continuation we deduce the expansion for all complex values of ss. The Riemann zeta function plays an essential role in this asymptotic expansion.

The support of the logarithmic equilibrium measure on sets of revolution in R3\R^3

For surfaces of revolution BB in R3\R^3, we investigate the limit distribution of minimum energy point masses on BB that interact according to the logarithmic potential log⁡(1/r)\log (1/r), where rr is the Euclidean distance between points. We show that such limit distributions are supported only on the ``out-most'' portion of the surface (e.g., for a torus, only on that portion of the surface with positive curvature). Our analysis proceeds by reducing the problem to the complex plane where a non-singular potential kernel arises whose level lines are ellipses.
