Hyperon II: Properties of excited hyperons

We report properties of $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperon resonances formed in $K^-$ induced reactions. Special emphasis is laid on the analysis of the three-body final states $2π^0Λ$ and $2π^0Σ$ and of the quasi-two-body final states $πΛ(1520)$, $\bar KΔ(1232)$, $πΣ(1385)$, $\bar K^*N$, and $ωΛ$. We give pole positions of $Λ$ and $Σ$ hyperon resonances and transition residues from the $K^-p$ initial to various final states as well as Breit-Wigner masses and widths and decay branching ratios. Twenty resonances and "bumps" reported in the Review of Particle Physics are not required in our fits, evidence for five new resonances is reported. The observed mass spectrum is compared to the spectrum calculated in the Bonn quark model. Three spin doublets, six $Λ$ hyperons, are tentatively assigned to the SU(3) singlet system.

New data on $\vecγ \vec{p}\rightarrow ηp$ with polarized photons and protons and their implications for $N^* \to Nη$ decays

The polarization observables $T, E, P, H$, and $G$ in photoproduction of $η$ mesons off protons are measured for photon energies from threshold to $W=2400\,$MeV ($T$), 2280 MeV ($E$), 1620 MeV ($P, H$), or 1820 MeV ($G$), covering nearly the full solid angle. The data are compared to predictions from the SAID, MAID, JüBo, and BnGa partial-wave analyses. A refit within the BnGa approach including further data yields precise branching ratios for the $Nη$ decay of nucleon resonances. A $Nη$-branching ratio of $0.33\pm 0.04$ for $N(1650)1/2^-$ is found, which reduces the large and controversially discussed $Nη$-branching ratio difference of the two lowest mass $J^P=1/2^-$-resonances significantly.

$N^{\bf *}$ decays to $Nω$ from new data on $γp\to ωp$

Data on the reaction $γp\to ωp$ with $ω\toπ^0γ$, taken with unpolarized or polarized beams in combination with an unpolarized or polarized proton-target, were analyzed within the Bonn-Gatchina (BnGa) partial wave analysis. Differential cross sections, several spin density matrix elements, the beam asymmetry $Σ$, the normalized helicity difference $E$, and the correlation $G$ between linear photon and longitudinal target polarization were included in a large data base on pion and photo-induced reactions. The data on $ω$ photoproduction are used to determine twelve $N^*\to Nω$ branching ratios; most of these are determined for the first time.

Propagators of resonances and rescatterings of the decay products

Hadronic resonance propagators which take into account the analytical properties of decay processes are built in terms of the dispersion relation technique. Such propagators can describe multi-component systems, for example, those when quark degrees of freedom create a resonance state, and decay products correct the corresponding pole by adding hadronic deuteron-like components. Meson and baryon states are considered, examples of particles with different spins are presented.

First Measurement of the Polarization Observable E in the $\vec p(\vec γ,π^+)n$ Reaction up to 2.25 GeV

First results from the longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target (FROST) program are reported. The double-polarization observable E, for the reaction $\vec γ\vec p \to π^+n$, has been measured using a circularly polarized tagged-photon beam, with energies from 0.35 to 2.37 GeV. The final-state pions were detected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. These polarization data agree fairly well with previous partial-wave analyses at low photon energies. Over much of the covered energy range, however, significant deviations are observed, particularly in the high-energy region where high-L multipoles contribute. The data have been included in new multipole analyses resulting in updated nucleon resonance parameters. We report updated fits from the Bonn-Gatchina, Jülich, and SAID groups.

High statistics study of the reaction $γp\to p\;2π^0$

The photoproduction of 2$π^0$ mesons off protons was studied with the Crystal Barrel/TAPS experiment at the electron accelerator ELSA in Bonn. The energy of photons produced in a radiator was tagged in the energy range from 600\,MeV to 2.5\,GeV. Differential and total cross sections and $pπ^0π^0$ Dalitz plots are presented. Part of the data was taken with a diamond radiator producing linearly polarized photons, and beam asymmetries were derived. Properties of nucleon and $Δ$ resonances contributing to the $pπ^0π^0$ final state were determined within the BnGa partial wave analysis. The data presented here allow us to determine branching ratios of nucleon and $Δ$ resonances for their decays into $pπ^0π^0$ via several intermediate states. Most prominent are decays proceeding via $Δ(1232)π$, $N(1440)1/2^+π$, $N(1520)3/2^-π$, $N(1680)5/2^+π$, but also $pf_0(500)$, $pf_0(980)$, and $pf_2(1270)$ contribute to the reaction.

Interference phenomena in the $J^P=1/2^-$-wave in $η$ photoproduction

The recent precise experimental results for the photoproduction of $η$-mesons off the neutron measured with the Crystal Ball/TAPS calorimeter at the MAMI accelerator have been investigated in detail in the framework of the Bonn-Gatchina coupled channel model. The main result is that the narrow structure observed in the excitation function of $γn \rightarrow nη$ can be reproduced fully with a particular interference pattern in the $J^P=1/2^-$ partial wave. Introduction of the narrow resonance $N(1685)$ with the properties reported in earlier publications deteriorates the quality of the fit.

Measurement of double polarisation asymmetries in $ω$-photoproduction

The first measurements of the beam-target-helicity-asymmetries $E$ and $G$ in the photoproduction of $ω$-mesons off protons at the CBELSA/TAPS experiment are reported. $E$ ($G$) was measured using circularly (linearly) polarised photons and a longitudinally polarised target. $E$ was measured over the photon energy range from close to threshold ($E_γ= 1108$~MeV) to $E_γ= 2300$~MeV and $G$ at a single energy interval of $1108 < E_γ<1300$~MeV. Both measurements cover the full solid angle. The observables $E$ and $G$ are highly sensitive to the contribution of baryon resonances, with $E$ acting as a helicity filter in the $s$-channel. The new results indicate significant $s$-channel resonance contributions together with contributions from $t$-channel exchange processes. A partial wave analysis reveals strong contributions from the partial waves with spin-parity $J^P=3/2^+, 5/2^+$, and $3/2^-$.

The polarization observables T, P, and H and their impact on $γp \to pπ^0$ multipoles

Data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction $γp\to pπ^0$ are reported. Compared to earlier data from other experiments, our data are more precise and extend the covered range in energy and angle substantially. The results were extracted from azimuthal asymmetries measured using a transversely polarized target and linearly polarized photons. The data were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA with the CBELSA/TAPS detector. Within the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis, the new polarization data lead to a significant narrowing of the error band for the multipoles for neutral-pion photoproduction.

Energy-independent PWA of the reaction $γp\to K^+Λ$

Using all recent data on the differential cross sections and spin observables for the reaction $γp \to K^+ Λ$, an energy-independent partial-wave analysis is performed. The analysis requires multipoles up to $L = 2$; there is no evidence that the fit requires multipoles with $L=3$. At present the available data allow us to extract the dominant multipoles only. These are compatible with the multipoles obtained in the energy-dependent fit. This result supports the reliability of the Bonn-Gatchina energy-dependent results.

First measurement of the helicity asymmetry for $γp\rightarrow pπ^0$ in the resonance region

The first measurement of the helicity dependence of the photoproduction cross section of single neutral pions off protons is reported for photon energies from 600 to 2300\,MeV, covering nearly the full solid angle. The data are compared to predictions from the SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial wave analyses. Strikingly large differences between data and predictions are observed which are traced to differences in the helicity amplitudes of well known and established resonances. Precise values for the helicity amplitudes of several resonances are reported.

Measurement of polarisation observables in $K^0_sΣ^+$ photoproduction off the proton

The reaction $γ\, p \rightarrow K^0_S\,Σ^+$ is studied in the photon energy range from threshold. Linearly polarised photon beams from coherent bremsstrahlung enabled the first measurement of photon beam asymmetries in this reaction up to $E_γ= 2250$ MeV. In addition, the recoil hyperon polarisation was determined through the asymmetry in the weak decay $Σ^+ \rightarrow p π^0$ up to $E_γ= 1650$ MeV. The data are compared to partial wave analyses, and the possible impact on the interpretation of a recently observed cusp-like structure near the $K^*$ thresholds is discussed.

The N(1520) 3/2- helicity amplitudes from an energy-independent multipole analysis based on new polarization data on photoproduction of neutral pions

New data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction $γp \to pπ^0$ are reported. The results are extracted from azimuthal asymmetries when a transversely polarized butanol target and a linearly polarized photon beam are used. The data were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA using the CBELSA/TAPS detector. These and earlier data are used to perform a truncated energy-independent partial wave analysis in sliced-energy bins. This energy-independent analysis is compared to the results from energy-dependent partial wave analyses.

Sign ambiguity in the K Sigma channel

Ambiguities of the signs of $N\to ΣK$ coupling constants are studied in a multichannel partial wave analysis of a large body of pion and photo-induced reactions. It is shown that the signs are not free from some ambiguities, and further experimental data are needed. Data on the reactions $π^+p\to Σ^+K^+$ and $γp\to K^+Σ^0$ define rather well the isospin 3/2 contributions to these channels. However the lack of information on polarization observables for the reactions $π^-p\to Σ^0K^0$, $π^-p\to Σ^-K^+$ and $γp\to K^0Σ^+$ does not allow us to fix uniquely the signs of $N\to ΣK$ coupling constants. As a consequence, also the contributions of nucleon resonances to these channels remain uncertain.

preprint2013arXiv

Study of ambiguities in $π^-p\to ΛK^0$ scattering amplitudes

Amplitudes for the reaction $π^-p\to ΛK^0$ are reconstructed from data on the differential cross section $dσ/dΩ$, the recoil polarization $P$, and on the spin rotation parameter $β$. At low energies, no data on $β$ exist, resulting in ambiguities. An approximation using $S$ and $P$ waves leads only to a fair description of the data on $dσ/dΩ$ and $P$; in this case, there are two sets of amplitudes. Including $D$ waves, the data on $dσ/dΩ$ and $P$ are well reproduced by the fit but now, there are several distinct solutions which describe the data with identical precision. In the range where the spin rotation parameter $β$ was measured, a full and unambiguous reconstruction of the partial wave amplitudes is possible. The energy-independent amplitudes are compared to the energy dependent amplitudes which resulted from a coupled channel fit (BnGa2011-02) to a large data set including both pion and photo-induced reactions. Significant deviations are observed. Consistency between energy dependent and energy independent solutions by choosing the energy independent solution which is closest to the energy dependent solution. In a second step, the {\it known} energy dependent solution for low (or high) partial waves is imposed and only the high (or low) partial waves are fitted leading to smaller uncertainties.

Well-established nucleon resonances revisited by double-polarization measurements

The first measurement is reported of the double-polarization observable G in photoproduction of neutral pions off protons, covering the photon energy range from 620 to 1120 MeV and the full solid angle. G describes the correlation between the photon polarization plane and the scattering plane for protons polarized along the direction of the incoming photon. The observable is highly sensitive to contributions from baryon resonances. The new results are compared to the predictions from SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial wave analyses. In spite of the long-lasting efforts to understand γp -> pπ 0 as the simplest photoproduction reaction, surprisingly large differences between the new data and the latest predictions are observed which are traced to different contributions of the N (1535) with spin-parity J^P = 1/2^- and N (1520) with J^P = 3/2^- . In the third resonance region, where N (1680) with J^P = 5/2^+ production dominates, the new data are reasonably close to the predictions.

A partial wave analysis of pbar-p -> eta-eta-pizero

A partial wave analysis of pbar-p -> eta-eta-pizero data from the Crystal Barrel experiment is made in terms of s-channel resonances. The decay channels a_0(980)-eta, f_0(1770)-pi and f_0(2105)-pi provide evidence for two I = 1 J^{PC} = 0^{-+} resonances. The first has mass M =2360 +- 25 MeV and width Gamma = 300^{+100}_{-50} MeV, and the second M =2070 \pm 35 MeV, Gamma = 310^{+100}_{-50} MeV. There is also evidence for a J^{PC} = 2^{-+} state with M = 2005 +- 15 MeV and Gamma = 200 +- 40 MeV, decaying strongly to a_0(980)-pi.

A study of pbar-p -> eta-eta-eta for masses 1960 to 2410 MeV

Data on pbar-p -> 3eta for beam momenta 600--1940 MeV/c are presented. The strongest channel is f_0(1500)-eta from the initial pbar-p state 1S0. Together with eta-pizero-pizero data, the 3eta data determine the branching ratio BR[f_0(1500) -> eta-eta]/BR[f_0(1500) -> pizero-pizero] = 0.42+-0.09. They are consistent with a dominant contribution from an I=0, C=+1 J^{PC} = 0^{-+} resonance observed earlier in the eta-pizero-pizero data; from the combined eta-pizero-pizero and 3eta data, its mass is M = 2320 \pm 15 MeV and its width Gamma = 230+-35 MeV.

Anomaly in the K^0_S Sigma^+ photoproduction cross section off the proton at the K* threshold

The $γ+ p \rightarrow K^0 + Σ^+$ photoproduction reaction is investigated in the energy region from threshold to $E_γ= 2250$\,MeV. The differential cross section exhibits increasing forward-peaking with energy, but only up to the $K^*$ threshold. Beyond, it suddenly returns to a flat distribution with the forward cross section dropping by a factor of four. In the total cross section a pronounced structure is observed between the $K^*Λ$ and $K^*Σ$ thresholds. It is speculated whether this signals the turnover of the reaction mechanism from t-channel exchange below the $K^*$ production threshold to an s-channel mechanism associated with the formation of a dynamically generated $K^*$-hyperon intermediate state.

Combined analysis of meson channels with I=1, C = -1 from 1940 to 2410 MeV

New Crystal Barrel data are reported for pbar-p -> omega-pizero and pbar-p -> omega eta-pizero with omega decaying to piplus-piminus-pizero. The shapes of angular distributions agree well with those for data where omega -> pizero-gamma; this is a valuable cross-check on systematic errors. The new data provide good measurements of vector and tensor polarisations P_y, T20, T21 and T22 of the omega. These lead to significant improvements in parameters of several resonances reported earlier. New values of masses and widths (in Mev) are: J^PC = 5^-- (2300+-45, 260+-75), J^PC = 3^-- (2260+-20, 160+-25), J^PC = 1^+- (2240+-35, 320+-85), and J^PC = 1^-- (2110+-35, 230+-50). A remarkable feature of the data is that vector polarisation P_y is close to zero everywhere. It follows that all interfering amplitudes have relative phases close to 0 or 180 deg. Tensor polarisations are large.

Evidence for a negative-parity spin-doublet of nucleon resonances at 1.88\,GeV

Evidence is reported for two nucleon resonances with spin-parity $J^P=1/2^-$ and $J^P=3/2^-$ at a mass just below 1.9\,GeV. The evidence is derived from a coupled-channel analysis of a large number of pion and photo-produced reactions. The two resonances are nearly degenerate in mass with two resonances of the same spin but positive parity. Such parity doublets are predicted in models claiming restoration of chiral symmetry in high-mass excitations of the nucleon. Further examples of spin parity doublets are found in addition. Alternatively, the spin doublet can be interpreted as member of the 56-plet expected in the third excitation band of the nucleon. Implications for the problem of the {\it missing resonances} are discussed.

Evidence for a spin-quartet of nucleon resonances at 2\,GeV

Results from a multi-channel partial wave analysis of elastic and inelastic $πN$ and $γN$ induced reactions are presented. The analysis evidences the existence of a spin-quartet of nucleon resonances with total angular momenta $J^P=1/2^+,..., 7/2^+$. All states fall into a $\pm130$\,MeV mass gap centered at 1.97\,GeV. The spin quartet is at variance with S-wave diquark configurations required in classical di-quark models.

I = 0 C = +1 mesons from 1920 to 2410 MeV

A combined fit is presented to data on pbar-p annihilation in flight to final states eta-pizero-pizero, pizero-pizero, eta-eta, eta-etaprime and piminus-piplus. The emphasis lies in improving an earlier study of eta-pizero-pizero by fitting data at nine pbar momenta simultaneously and with parameters consistent with the two-body channels. There is evidence for all of the I=0, C=+ q-qbar states expected in this mass range. New resonances are reported with masses and widths M,Gamma as follows: JPC = 4^{-+} (2328+-38, Gamma=240+-90) MeV, 1^{++} (1971+-15, 240+-45) MeV, 0^{-+} (2285+-20, 325+-30) MeV, and 0^{-+} (2010 ^{+35}_{-60}, 270+-60) MeV. Errors on the masses and widths of other resonances are also reduced substantially. All states lie close to parallel straight line trajectories of excitation number v. mass squared.

I=0, C=-1 mesons from 1940 to 2410 MeV

New Crystal Barrel data are reported for pbar-p -> omega-eta and pbar-p -> omega-pizero-pizero with omega decaying to piplus-piminus-pizero. The omega-eta data confirm angular distributions obtained earlier from data where omega -> pizero-gamma. The new omega-eta data provide accurate measurements of vector and tensor polarisations of the omega and lead to considerable improvements in masses and widths of s-channel resonances. A new J^PC = 3^+- I = 0 resonance is observed with mass M = 2025+-20 MeV and width Gamma = 145+-30 MeV. Polarisation is close to zero everywhere and tensor polarisations are large, as is the case also for pbar-p -> omega-pizero.

Nucleon resonances in the fourth resonance region

Nucleon and $Δ$ resonances in the fourth resonance region are studied in a multichannel partial-wave analysis which includes nearly all available data on pion- and photo-induced reactions off protons. In the high-mass range, above 1850\,MeV, several alternative solutions yield a good description of the data. For these solutions, masses, widths, pole residues and photo-couplings are given. In particular, we find evidence for nucleon resonances with spin-parities $J^P=1/2^+...7/2^+$. For one set of solutions, there are four resonances forming naturally a spin-quartet of resonances with orbital angular momentum L=2 and spin S=3/2 coupling to $J=1/2,...,7/2$. Just below 1.9\,GeV we find a spin doublet of resonances with $J^P=1/2^-$ and $3/2^-$. Since a spin partner with $J^P=5/2^-$ is missing at this mass, the two resonances form a spin doublet which must have a symmetric orbital-angular-momentum wave function with L=1. For another set of solutions, the four positive-parity resonances are accompanied by mass-degenerate negative-parity partners -- as suggested by the conjecture of chiral symmetry restoration. The possibility of a $J^P=1/2^+, 3/2^+$ spin doublet at 1900\,MeV belonging to a 20-plet is discussed.

Partial wave analysis of pbar-p annihilation channels in flight with I=1, C=+1

A combined analysis is reported of 3pizero, pizero-eta and pizero-etaprime data in the mass range 1960 to 2410 MeV. This analysis is made consistent also with eta-eta-pizero data, reported separately. The analysis requires s-channel resonances with a spectrum close to that published earlier for C = +1 states with I = 0; masses for I=1 states are lower on average by 20 MeV. Two alternative solutions are found, differing only for J^P = 2^+ and 4^+ states by small amounts in masses and widths. Both 3pizero and eta-pizero data prefer one of these two solutions. For this preferred solution, observed states have J^PC, masses and widths (M,Gamma) in MeV as follows: 4^-+: (2250+-15, 215+-25), 4^++: (2255+-40, 330 ^{+110}_{-50}) and (2005 ^{+25}_{-45}, 180+-30), 3^++: (2275+-35, 350 ^{+100}_{-50}) and (2031+-12, 150 \pm 18), 2^-+: (2245+-60, 320 ^{+100}_{-40}) and (2005+-15, 200+-40, 2^++: (2255+-20, 230+-15), (2175+-40, 310^{+90}_{-45}) and (2030+-20, 205+-30), and 1^++: (2270 ^{+55}_{-40}, 305 ^{+70}_{-35}). There are indications of further 2^-+, 2^++ and 1^++ contributions just below the available mass range, and also a 0^++ state at ~2025 MeV.

Partial wave analysiss of pbar-p -> piminus-piplus, pizero-pizero, eta-eta and eta-etaprime

A partial wave analysis is presented of Crystal Barrel data on pbar-p -> pizero-pizero, eta-eta and eta-etaprime from 600 to 1940 MeV/c, combined with earlier data on dσ/dΩand P for pbar-p->piminus-piplus. The following s-channel I=0 resonances are identified: (i) J^{PC} = 5^{--} with mass and width (M,Γ) at (2295+-30,235^{+65}_{-40}) MeV, (ii) J^{PC} = 4^{++} at (2020+-12, 170+-15) MeV and (2300+-25, 270+-50) MeV, (iii) 3D3 JPC = 3^{--} at (1960+-15, 150+-25) MeV and (2210+-4$, 360+-55) MeV, and a 3G3 state at (2300 ^{+50}_{-80}, 340+-150) MeV, (iv) JPC = 2^{++} at (1910+-30, 260+-40) MeV, (2020+-30, 275+-35) MeV, (2230+-30, 245+-45) MeV, and (2300+-35, 290+-50) MeV, (v) JPC = 1^{--} at (2005+-40, 275+-75) MeV, and (2165+-40, 160 ^{+140}_{-70}) MeV, and (vi) JPC = 0^{++} at (2005+-30, 305+-50) MeV, (2105+-15, 200+-25) MeV, and (2320+-30, 175+-45) MeV. In addition, there is a less well defined 6^{++} resonance at 2485+-40 MeV, with Gamma = 410+-90 MeV. For every JP, almost all these resonances lie on well defined linear trajectories of mass squared v. excitation number. The slope is 1.10+-0.03 Gev^2 per excitation. The f_0(2105) has strong coupling to eta-η, but much weaker coupling to pizero-pizero. Its flavour mixing angle between q-qbar and s-sbar is (59-71.6)deg, i.e. dominant decays to s-sbar. Such decays and its strong production in pbar-p interactions strongly suggest exotic character.

Photoproduction of Neutral Pions off Protons

Photoproduction of neutral pions has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector in the reaction $γp\to pπ^0$ for photon energies between 0.85 and 2.50 GeV. The $π^0$ mesons are observed in their dominant neutral decay mode: $π^0\toγγ$. For the first time, the differential cross sections cover the very forward region, $θ_{\rm c.m.}<60^\circ$. A partial-wave analysis of these data within the Bonn-Gatchina framework observes the high-mass resonances $G_{17}$(2190), $D_{13}$(2080), and $D_{15}$(2070).

Quasi-free photoproduction of eta-mesons off the deuteron

Precise data for quasi-free photoproduction of $η$ mesons off the deuteron have been measured at the Bonn ELSA accelerator with the combined Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector for incident photon energies up to 2.5 GeV. The $η$-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and neutrons. Possible nuclear effects like Fermi motion and re-scattering can be studied via a comparison of the quasi-free reaction off the bound proton to $η$-production off the free proton. No significant effects beyond the folding of the free cross section with the momentum distribution of the bound protons have been found. These Fermi motion effects can be removed by an analysis using the invariant mass of the $η$-nucleon pairs reconstructed from the final state four-momenta of the particles. The total cross section for quasi-free $η$-photoproduction off the neutron reveals even without correction for Fermi motion a pronounced bump-like structure around 1 GeV of incident photon energy, which is not observed for the proton. This structure is even narrower in the invariant mass spectrum of the $η$-neutron pairs. Position and width of the peak in the invariant mass spectrum are $W\approx 1665$ MeV and FWHM $Γ\approx 25$ MeV. The data are compared to the results of different models.

Resonances formed by pbar-p and decaying into pizero-pizero-eta for masses 1960 to 2410 MeV

Data on pbar-b annihilation in flight into pizero-pizero-eta are presented for nine beam momenta 600 to 1940 MeV/c. The strongest four intermediate states are found to be f_2(1270)-eta, a_2(1320)-pi, sigma-eta and a_0(980)-pi. Partial wave analysis is performed mainly to look for resonances formed by pbar-p and decaying into pizero-pizero-eta through these intermediate states. There is evidence for the following s-channel I = 0 resonances : two 4^{++} resonances with mass and width (M,Gamma) at (2044, 208) MeV and (2320+-30, 220+-30) MeV; three 2^{++} resonances at (2020+-50, 200+-70) MeV, (2240+-40, 170+-50) MeV and (2370+-50, 320+-50) MeV; two 3^{++} resonances at (2000+-40, 250+-40) MeV and (2280+-30, 210+-30) MeV; a 1^{++} resonance at (2340+-40, 340+-40) MeV; and two 2^{-+} resonances at (2040+-40, 190+-40) MeV and (2300+-40, 270+-40) MeV.

Search for Narrow Nucleon Resonance in $γp\to ηp$

Results of a partial wave analysis of new high-statistics data on $γp\to pη$ from MAMI are presented. A fit using known broad resonances and only standard background amplitudes can not describe the relatively narrow peaking structure in the cross section in the mass region of 1660-1750 MeV which follows a minimum. An improved description of the data can be reached by either assuming the existence of a narrow resonance at a mass of about 1700 MeV with small photo-coupling or by a threshold effect. In the latter case the observed structure is explained by a strong (resonant or non-resonant) $γp\toωp$ coupling in the $S_{11}$ partial wave. When the beam asymmetry data, published by part of the GRAAL collaboration, are included in the fit, the solution with a narrow $P_{11}$ state is slightly preferred. In that fit, mass and width of the hypothetical resonance are determined to $M\sim$1694 MeV and $Γ\sim 40$ MeV, respectively, and the photo-coupling to $\sqrt{{\rm Br}_{ηN}} A_{1/2}^p \sim 2.6\cdot 10^{-3}$ GeV$^{-1/2}$. High precision measurements of the target asymmetry and $F$-observable are mandatory to establish the possible existence of such a narrow state and to provide the necessary information to define which partial wave is responsible for the structure observed in the data.

Sigma-Meson and Confinement Singularity

We describe the meson-meson data for the ($IJ^{PC}=00^{++}$) wave at $280\leq\sqrt s\leq 1900$ MeV in two approaches: (i) the K-matrix approach and (ii) the dispersion relation D-matrix method. With a good description of low energy data (at $280\leq\sqrt s\leq 900$ MeV) as well as the data of two-meson transition amplitudes and antiproton-proton annihilation into three pseudoscalar meson states (at $450\leq\sqrt s\leq 1950$ MeV) we have found the positions of the resonance poles: (i) for the $σ$ meson pole: $M_σ= (390\pm 35)-i(235\pm 50)$ MeV; (ii) two poles for the $f_0(980)$, on the second sheet (under the $ππ$ cut): $M_{I} = (1011\pm 5)-i(35\pm 5)$ MeV, and on the third sheet (under the $ππ$ and $K\bar K$ cuts), $M_{II} = (1035\pm 50)-i(460\pm 50)$ MeV; for the $f_0(1370)$ meson, $M= (1285\pm 30)-i(160\pm 20)$ MeV; for the $f_0(1500)$ meson, $M = (1488\pm 4)-i(53\pm 5)$ MeV; for the $f_0(1790)$ meson, $M = (1775\pm 25)-i(140\pm 15)$ MeV and for the broad state $f_0(1200-1600)$ $M=(1540\pm 120)-i(550\pm 70)$ MeV. Our estimation of the scalar-isoscalar scattering length obtained under different parameterizations and assumptions about the quality of low energy $ππ$ scattering data is $a^0_0=(0.215\pm 0.040)μ^{-1}_π$. We also discuss the idea according to which the $σ$-meson could be a remnant of the confinement singularity, $1/s^2$, in a white channel.

Study of pbar-p -> eta-eta-pizero-pizero in flight

An analysis of data on pbar-p -> eta-eta-pizero-pizero is presented at pbar beam momenta 600 to 1940 MeV/c. There is evidence for an I = 1, J^PC = 2^-+ resonance in eta-eta-pizero with mass M = 1880 +- 20 MeV and width 255 +- 45 MeV, decaying strongly a2(1320)-eta; it is too strong to be explained as the high mass tail of π_2(1670) -> a2(1320)-eta. There is tentative evidence also for weak decays to f_0(1500)π. It makes a natural partner to the eta 2(1860).

A fresh look at eta2(1645), eta2(1870), eta2(2030) and f2(1910) in pbar-p -> eta + 3pizero

There is a large discrepancy between results of Crystal Barrel and WA102 for the branching ratio R = BR[eta2(1870)->a2(1320)pi]/ BR[eta2(1870)->f2(1270)eta]. An extensive re-analysis of the Crystal Barrel data redetermines branching ratios for decays of eta2(1870), eta2(1645), eta2(2030) and f2(1910). This re-analysis confirms a small value for R of 1.60+-0.39, inconsistent with the value 32.6+-12.6 of WA102. The likely origin of the discrepancy is that the WA102 data contain a strong f2(1910)->a2-pi signal as well as eta2(1870). There is strong evidence that the eta2(1870) has resonant phase variation. A peak in f2(1270)a0(980) confirms closely the parameters of the a2(2255) resonance observed previously. A peak in eta2(2030)-pi is interpreted naturally in terms of pi2(2245) with reduced errors for mass and width M=2285+-20(stat)+-25(syst) MeV, Gamma=250+-20(stat)+-25(syst) MeV.

Measurement of the Beam Asymmetry $Σ$ in the Forward Direction for pi0 Photoproduction

Photoproduction of neutral pions has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for photon energies between 0.92 and 1.68~GeV at the electron accelerator ELSA. The beam asymmetry~$Σ$ has been extracted for $115^\circ < θ_{\rm c.m.} < 155^\circ$ of the $π^0$~meson and for $θ_{\rm c.m.} < 60^\circ$. The new beam asymmetry data improve the world database for photon energies above 1.5~GeV and, by covering the very forward region, extend previously published data for the same reaction by our collaboration. The angular dependence of $Σ$ shows overall good agreement with the SAID parameterization.

P-wave excited baryons from pion- and photo-induced hyperon production

We report evidence for $N(1710)P_{11}$, $N(1875)P_{11}$, $N(1900)P_{13}$, $Δ(1600)P_{33}$, $Δ(1910)P_{31}$, and $Δ(1920)P_{33}$, and find indications that $N(1900)P_{13}$ might have a companion state at 1970\,MeV. The controversial $Δ(1750)P_{31}$ is not seen. The evidence is derived from a study of data on pion- and photo-induced hyperon production, but other data are included as well. Most of the resonances reported here were found in the Karlsruhe-Helsinki (KH84) and the Carnegie-Mellon (CM) analyses but were challenged recently by the Data Analysis Center at GWU. Our analysis is constrained by the energy independent $πN$ scattering amplitudes from either KH84 or GWU. The two $πN$ amplitudes from KH84 or GWU, respectively, lead to slightly different $πN$ branching ratios of contributing resonances but the debated resonances are required in both series of fits.

Photoproduction of $η'$-mesons off the deuteron

Quasi-free photoproduction of $η'$ mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron has been measured with the combined Crystal Barrel - TAPS detector. The experiment was done at a tagged photon beam of the ELSA electron accelerator in Bonn for incident photon energies from the production threshold up to 2.5 GeV. The $η'$-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons. The quasi-free proton data are in good agreement with the results for free protons, indicating that nuclear effects have no significant impact. The coincidence with recoil neutrons provides the first data for the $γn \rightarrow nη'$ reaction. In addition, also first estimates for coherent $η'$-production off the deuteron have been obtained. In agreement with model predictions, the total cross section for this channel is found to be very small, at most at the level of a few nb. The data are compared to model calculations taking into account contributions from nucleon resonances and $t$-channel exchanges.

Photoproduction of meson pairs: First measurement of the polarization observable I^s

The polarization observable I^s, a feature exclusive to the acoplanar kinematics of multi-meson final states produced via linearly polarized photons, has been measured for the first time. Results for the reaction g p -> p pi0 eta are presented for incoming photon energies between 970 MeV and 1650 MeV along with the beam asymmetry I^c. The comparably large asymmetries demonstrate a high sensitivity of I^s to the dynamics of the reaction. Fits using Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis demonstrate that the new polarization observables carry significant information on the contributing partial waves.

Photoproduction of pions and properties of baryon resonances from a Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis

Masses, widths and photocouplings of baryon resonances are determined in a coupled-channel partial wave analysis of a large variety of data. The Bonn-Gatchina partial wave formalism is extended to include a decomposition of t- and u-exchange amplitudes into individual partial waves. The multipole transition amplitudes for $γp\to pπ^0$ and $γp\to nπ^+$ are given and compared to results from other analyses.

Quark--Diquark Systematics of Baryons and the SU(6)SYMMETRY for Light States

We continue our attempts to systematize baryons, which are composed of light quarks ($q=u,d$), as quark--diquark systems. The notion of two diquarks is used: (i) $D^{1}_{1}$, with the spin $S_D=1$ and isospin $I_D=1$ and (ii) $D^{0}_{0}$, with $S_D=0$ and $I_D=0$. Here we try to resolve the problem of the low-lying $Δ(\frac 52^-)$ states: in the last experiments the lightest state is observed at $\ga 2200$ MeV, not at $1900 - 2000$ MeV as it has been stated 20 years ago. We are looking for different systematization variants with the forbidden low-lying $Δ(\frac 52^-)$ states in the mass region $\la 2000$ MeV. We see that the inclusion of the SU(6) constraints on $qD^{1}_{1}$ states with angular momentum L=1 results in a shift of the lightest $Δ(\frac 52^-)$ isobar to $\sim 2300$ MeV. The scheme with the SU(6) constraints for low-lying $qD^{1}_{1}$ and $qD^{0}_{0}$ states (with $L=0,1$) is presented in detail here.

Quark-diquark Systematics of Baryons: Spectral Integral Equations for Systems Composed by Light Quarks

For baryons composed by the light quarks ($q=u,d$) we write spectral integral equation using the notion of two diquarks: (i) axial--vector state, $D^{1}_{1}$, with the spin $S_D=1$ and isospin $I_D=1$ and (ii) scalar one, $D^{0}_{0}$, with the spin $S_D=0$ and isospin $I_D=0$. We present spectral integral equations for the $qD^{0}_{0}$ and $qD^{1}_{1}$ states taking into account quark--diquark confinement interaction.

Searching for the quark--diquark systematics of baryons composed by light quarks $q=u,d$

Supposing quark--diquark structure of baryons, we look for systematics of baryons composed of light quarks ($q=u,d$). We systematize baryons using the notion of two diquarks: (i) axial--vector state, $D^{1}_{1}$, with the spin $S_D=1$ and isospin $I_D=1$ and (ii) scalar one, $D^{0}_{0}$, with the spin $S_D=0$ and isospin $I_D=0$. We consider several schemes for the composed baryons: (1) with different diquark masses, $M_{D^0_0} \ne M_{D^1_1}$, (2) with $M_{D^0_0} = M_{D^1_1}$ and overlapping $qD^0_0$ and $qD^1_1$ states (resonances), (3) with/without SU(6) constraints for low-lying states (with quark--diquark orbital momenta L=0). In the high-mass region the model predicts several baryon resonances at $M\sim 2.0-2.9$ GeV. Moreover, the model gives us the double pole structure (i.e. two poles with the same Re$M$ but different Im$M$) in many amplitudes at masses $M\ga 2.0$ GeV. We see also that for description of low-lying baryons (with L=0), the SU(6) constraint is needed.

The rho -> gamma pi and omega -> gamma pi decays in quark-model approach and estimation of coupling for pion emission by quark

In the framework of the relativistic and gauge invariant spectral integral technique, we calculate radiative decays rho(770)-> gamma pi(140) and omega(780)-> gamma pi(140) supposing all mesons (pi, rho and omega) to be quark-antiquark states. The q anti-q wave functions found for mesons and photon lead to a reasonably good description of data ($Γ^{(exp)}_{ρ^{\pm} \toγπ^{\pm}}=68\pm 30$ keV, $Γ^{(exp)}_{ρ^{0}\toγπ^0}=77\pm 28$ keV, $Γ^{(exp)}_{ω\toγπ^0}=776\pm 45$ keV) that makes it possible to estimate the coupling for the bremsstrahlung emission of pion by quarks $g_π\equiv g_π(u\to d π)$. We have found two values for the pion bremsstrahlung coupling: $|g_π|=16.7 \pm 0.3 ^{+0.1}_{-2.3}$ (Solution I) and $|g_π|=3.0 \pm 0.3 ^{+0.1}_{-2.1}$ (Solution II). Within SU(6)-symmetry for nucleons, Solution I gives us for pi NN coupling the value $16.4 \le g_{πNN}^2/(4π) \le 23.2$ that is in qualitative agreement with the pi N scattering data, $g_{πNN}^2/(4π)\simeq 14$. For excited states, we have estimated the partial widths in Solution I as follows: $Γ(ρ_{2S}^\pm\to γπ)\simeq 10 - 130$ keV, $Γ(ρ_{2S}^0\to γπ)\simeq 10 -130$ keV, $Γ(ω_{2S}\to γπ)\simeq 60 - 1080$ keV. The large uncertainties emphasise the necessity to carry out measurements of the meson radiative processes in the region of large masses.

N* and Delta* decays into N pi0 pi0

Decays of baryon resonances in the second and the third resonance region into N pi0 pi0 are studied by photoproduction of two neutral pions off protons. Partial decay widths of N* and Delta* resonances decaying into Delta(1232) pi, N(ππ)_{S}, N(1440)P_{11} pi, and N(1520)D_{13} pi are determined in a partial wave analysis of this data, and data from other reactions. Several partial decay widths were not known before. Interesting decay patterns are observed which are not even qualitatively reproduced by quark model calculations. In the second resonance region, decays into Delta(1232) pi dominate clearly. The N(ππ)_{S}-wave provides a significant contribution to the cross section, especially in the third resonance region. The P_{13}(1720) properties found here are at clear variance to PDG values.

Decays of Baryon Resonances into K Lambda, K^+ Sigma^0 and K^0 Sigma^+

Cross sections, beam asymmetries, and recoil polarisations for the reactions gamma p to K^+ Lambda ; gamma to K^+ Sigma^0, and gamma p to K^0 Sigma^+ have been measured by the SAPHIR, CLAS, and LEPS collaborations with high statistics and good angular coverage for centre-of-mass energies between 1.6 and 2.3 GeV. The combined analysis of these data with data from pi and eta photoproduction reveals evidence for new baryon resonances in this energy region. A new P_{11} state with mass 1840 MeV and width 140 MeV was observed contributing to most of the fitted reactions. The data demand the presence of two D_{13} states at 1870 and 2170 MeV.

Photoproduction of Baryons Decaying into N pi and N eta

A combined analysis of photoproduction data on γp to πN, eta N was performed including the data on K Lambda and K Sigma. The data are interpreted in an isobar model with s--channel baryon resonances and pi, rho,(omega), K, and K^* exchange in the t--channel. Three baryon resonances have a substantial coupling to eta N, the well known N(1535)S_{11}, N(1720)P_{13}, and N(2070)D_{15}. The inclusion of data with open strangeness reveals the presence of further new resonances, N(1840)P_{11}, N(1875)D_{13} and N(2170)D_{13}.

Two-photon partial widths of tensor mesons

We calculate partial widths of the gamma-gamma decay of the tensor q\bar q states a_2(1320), f_2(1270), f_2(1525), their radial excitations a_2(1660), f_2(1640), f_2(1800) as well as ^3F_2 q\bar q states. Calculations are performed in the framework of the same approach which was used before for the study of radiative decays f_0(980) -> gamma-gamma, a_0(980) -> gamma-gamma and phi(1020) -> gamma-f_0(980): the assumption made is that of q\bar q structure of f_0(980) and a_0(980) [A.V. Anisovich et al., Phys. Lett. B 456, 80 (1999); Eur. Phys. J. A 12, 103 (2001)]. The description of the decay partial widths for a_2(1320), f_2(1270), f_2(1525) and f_0(980), a_0(980) is reached with the approximately equal radial wave functions, thus giving a strong argument in favour of the fact that these scalar and tensor mesons are to be classified as members of the same P-wave q\bar q multiplet.

Low- and intermediate-energy nucleon-nucleon interactions and the analysis of deuteron photodisintegration within the dispersion relation technique

The nucleon-nucleon interaction in the region of the nucleon kinetic energy up to 1000 MeV is analysed together with the reaction $γd \to pn$ in the photon energy range $E_γ=0-400$ MeV. Nine nucleon-nucleon $s$-channel partial amplitudes are reconstructed in the dispersion relation $N/D$ method: $^1S_0$, $^3S_1-^3D_1$, $^3P_0$, $^1P_1$, $^3P_1$, $^3P_2$, $^1D_2$, $^3D_2$ and $^3F_3$. Correspondingly, the dispersive representation of partial amplitudes $NΔ\to pn$, $NN^* \to pn$ and $NNπ\to pn$ is given. Basing on that, we have performed parameter-free calculation of the amplitude $γd \to pn$, taking into account: $(i)$ pole diagram, $(ii)$ nucleon-nucleon final-state rescattering $γd \to pn \to pn$, and $(iii)$ inelastic final-state rescatterings $γd \to NΔ(1232) \to pn$, $γd \to NN^*(1400) \to pn$ and $γd \to NNπ\to pn$. The $γd \to pn$ partial amplitudes for nine above-mentioned channels are found. It is shown that the process $γd \to pn \to pn$ is significant for the waves $^1S_0$, $^3P_0$, $^3P_1$, at $E_γ =50 -100$ MeV, while $γd \to NΔ\to pn$ for the waves $^3P_2$, $^1D_2$,$^3F_3$ dominates at $E_γ > 300$ MeV. Meson exchange current contributions into the deuteron disintegration are estimated: they are significant at $E_γ=100-400$ MeV.

Partial widths a_0(980)\toγγ, f_0(980)\toγγand q\bar q-classification of the lightest scalar mesons

Scalar glueball: analysis of the (IJ^{PC}=00^{++})-wave

Basing on the previously performed K-matrix analysis of experimental data, we investigate, in the framework of the propagator matrix (D-matrix) technique, the 1100-1900 MeV mass region, where overlapping resonances $f_0(1300)$, $f_0(1500)$, $f_0(1530^{+90}_{-250})$, and $f_0(1780)$ are located. Necessary elements of the D-matrix technique are developed. The D-matrix analysis confirms previous K-matrix results: in the region 900-1900 MeV five scalar/isoscalar states are located. Four of them are members of the two $q\bar q$-nonets, while one state is an extra for the $q\bar q$ systematics, being a good candidate for the lightest scalar glueball. The D-matrix analysis shows that this extra state, a candidate for the lightest scalar glueball, is dispersed, due to a mixing with $q\bar q$- states, over three resonances: $f_0(1300)$, $f_0(1500)$, and $f_0(1530^{+90}_{-250})$. The broad resonance $f_0(1530^+{90}_{-250})$ is a descendant of the lightest glueball carrying about 50% of the gluonium component, the rest of the gluonium is shared between $f_0(1300)$ and $f_0(1500)$.

Three-body dispersion-relation N/D equations for the coupled decay channels ppbar (J^{PC}=0^{-+}) --> pi^0 pi^0 pi^0, eta pi^0 pi^0, eta eta pi^0, K Kbar pi^0

During several years the data on different channels ppbar (J^{PC}=0^{-+}) --> 3 mesons presented by Crystal Barrel Collaboration were successfully analyzed by extracting the leading amplitude singularities - pole singularities - with the aim to obtain information about two-meson resonances. But these analyses do not take into account three-body final state interactions (FSI) in an explicitly correct way. This paper is devoted to the consideration of this problem.
