Investigating nuclear structure near $N = 32$ and $N = 34$: Precision mass measurements of neutron-rich Ca, Ti and V isotopes

Nuclear mass measurements of isotopes are key to improving our understanding of nuclear structure across the chart of nuclides, in particular for the determination of the appearance or disappearance of nuclear shell closures. We present high-precision mass measurements of neutron-rich Ca, Ti and V isotopes performed at the TITAN and LEBIT facilities. These measurements were made using the TITAN multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-ToF-MS) and the LEBIT 9.4T Penning trap mass spectrometer. In total, 13 masses were measured, eight of which represent increases in precision over previous measurements. These measurements refine trends in the mass surface around $N = 32$ and $N = 34$, and support the disappearance of the $N = 32$ shell closure with increasing proton number. Additionally, our data does not support the presence of a shell closure at $N = 34$.

Decay Spectroscopy of $^{129}$Cd

Excited states of $^{129}$In populated following the $β$-decay of $^{129}$Cd were experimentally studied with the GRIFFIN spectrometer at the ISAC facility of TRIUMF, Canada. A 480-MeV proton beam was impinged on a uranium carbide target and $^{129}$Cd was extracted using the Ion Guide Laser Ion Source (IG-LIS). $β$- and $γ$-rays following the decay of $^{129}$Cd were detected with the GRIFFIN spectrometer comprising the plastic scintillator SCEPTAR and 16 high-purity germanium (HPGe) clover-type detectors. %, along with the $β$-particles were detected with SCEPTAR. From the $β$-$γ$-$γ$ coincidence analysis, 32 new transitions and 7 new excited states were established, expanding the previously known level scheme of $^{129}$In. The $\log ft$ values deduced from the $β$-feeding intensities suggest that some of the high-lying states were populated by the $ν0 g_{7/2} \rightarrow π0 g_{9/2}$ allowed Gamow-Teller (GT) transition, which indicates that the allowed GT transition is more dominant in the $^{129}$Cd decay than previously reported. Observation of fragmented Gamow-Teller strengths is consistent with theoretical calculations.

Resonant Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) Development on Lu and Pr

Resonance ionization laser ion sources are efficient and element selective ion sources, which are particularly well suited for radioactive ion beam facilities. Using TRIUMF's off-line laser ion source test stand with a system of tunable titanium sapphire (Ti:Sa) lasers, laser resonance ionization schemes for lutetium and praseodymium have been investigated with a particular interest to autoionizing states. New ionization schemes via Rydberg states and autoionizing states were found. Their investigation and comparison of ion yields at the off-line test stand will be discussed, and the data of on-line Lu delivery will be presented.

Study of even-parity Rydberg and autoionizing states of lutetium by laser resonance ionization spectroscopy

Multi-step laser resonance ionization spectroscopy of lutetium (Lu) has been performed at TRIUMF's off-line laser ion source test stand. The even-parity Rydberg series $6s^2nd$ $^2D_{3/2}$, $6s^2nd$ $^2D_{5/2}$ and $6s^2ns$ $^2S_{1/2}$ were observed converging to the 6s$^2$ ionization potential. The experimental results has been compared to previous work. 51 levels of Rydberg series $6s^2nd$ $^2D_{5/2}$ and 52 levels of Rydberg series $6s^2ns$ $^2S_{1/2}$ were reported new. Additionally six even-parity autoionization (AI) series converging to Lu ionic states $5d6s$ $^3D_1$ and $5d6s$ $^3D_2$ were observed. The level energies of these AI states were measured. The configurations of the AI states were assigned by relativistic multichannel theory (RMCT) within the framework of multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT).

Breakdown of the Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation for the A = 20 and 21 Multiplets

Using the Penning trap mass spectrometer TITAN, we performed the first direct mass measurements of 20,21Mg, isotopes that are the most proton-rich members of the A = 20 and A = 21 isospin multiplets. These measurements were possible through the use of a unique ion-guide laser ion source, a development that suppressed isobaric contamination by six orders of magnitude. Compared to the latest atomic mass evaluation, we find that the mass of 21Mg is in good agreement but that the mass of 20Mg deviates by 3σ. These measurements reduce the uncertainties in the masses of 20,21Mg by 15 and 22 times, respectively, resulting in a significant departure from the expected behavior of the isobaric multiplet mass equation in both the A = 20 and A = 21 multiplets. This presents a challenge to shell model calculations using either the isospin non-conserving USDA/B Hamiltonians or isospin non-conserving interactions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon forces.

Offline trapping of $^{221}$Fr in a magneto-optical trap from implantation of an $^{225}$Ac ion beam

We demonstrate a new technique to prepare an offline source of francium for trapping in a magneto-optical trap. Implanting a radioactive beam of $^{225}$Ac, $t_{1/2} = 9.920(3)$ days, in a foil, allows use of the decay products, i.e.$^{221}$Fr, $t_{1/2} = 288.0(4)$ s. $^{221}$Fr is ejected from the foil by the $α$ decay of $^{225}$Ac. This technique is compatible with the online accumulation of a laser-cooled atomic francium sample for a series of planned parity non-conservation measurements at TRIUMF. We obtain a 34% release efficiency for $^{221}$Fr from the recoil source based on particle detector measurements. We find that laser cooling operation with the source is $8^{+10}_{-5}$ times less efficient than from a mass-separated ion beam of $^{221}$Fr in the current geometry. While the flux of this source is two to three orders of magnitude lower than typical francium beams from ISOL facilities, the source provides a longer-term supply of francium for offline studies.
