New simpler method of matching NLO corrections with parton shower Monte Carlo

Next steps in development of the KrkNLO method of implementing NLO QCD corrections to hard processes in parton shower Monte Carlo programs are presented. This new method is a simpler alternative to other well-known approaches, such as MC@NLO and POWHEG. The KrkNLO method owns its simplicity to the use of parton distribution functions (PDFs) in a new, so-called Monte Carlo (MC), factorization scheme which was recently fully defined for the first time. Preliminary numerical results for the Higgs-boson production process are also presented.

Parton distribution functions in Monte Carlo factorisation scheme

A next step in development of the KrkNLO method of including complete NLO QCD corrections to hard processes in a LO parton-shower Monte Carlo (PSMC) is presented. It consists of generalisation of the method, previously used for the Drell-Yan process, to Higgs-boson production. This extension is accompanied with the complete description of parton distribution functions (PDFs) in a dedicated, Monte Carlo (MC) factorisation scheme, applicable to any process of production of one or more colour-neutral particles in hadron-hadron collisions.

Physics at a 100 TeV pp collider: Standard Model processes

This report summarises the properties of Standard Model processes at the 100 TeV pp collider. We document the production rates and typical distributions for a number of benchmark Standard Model processes, and discuss new dynamical phenomena arising at the highest energies available at this collider. We discuss the intrinsic physics interest in the measurement of these Standard Model processes, as well as their role as backgrounds for New Physics searches.

Matching NLO QCD with parton shower in Monte Carlo scheme - the KrkNLO method

A new method of including the complete NLO QCD corrections to hard processes in the LO parton-shower Monte Carlo (PSMC) is presented. This method, called KrkNLO, requires the use of parton distribution functions in a dedicated Monte Carlo factorization scheme, which is also discussed in this paper. In the future, it may simplify introduction of the NNLO corrections to hard processes and the NLO corrections to PSMC. Details of the method and numerical examples of its practical implementation, as well as comparisons with other calculations, such as MCFM, MC@NLO, POWHEG, for single $Z/γ^*$-boson production at the LHC, are presented.

Proceedings of the Sixth International Workshop on Multiple Partonic Interactions at the Large Hadron Collider

Multiple Partonic Interactions are often crucial for interpreting results obtained at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The quest for a sound understanding of the dynamics behind MPI - particularly at this time when the LHC is due to start its "Run II" operations - has focused the aim of this workshop. MPI@LHC2014 concentrated mainly on the phenomenology of LHC measurements whilst keeping in perspective those results obtained at previous hadron colliders. The workshop has also debated some of the state-of-the-art theoretical considerations and the modeling of MPI in Monte Carlo event generators. The topics debated in the workshop included: Phenomenology of MPI processes and multiparton distributions; Considerations for the description of MPI in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD); Measuring multiple partonic interactions; Experimental results on inelastic hadronic collisions: underlying event, minimum bias, forward energy flow; Monte Carlo generator development and tuning; Connections with low-x phenomena, diffraction, heavy-ion physics and cosmic rays. In a total of 57 plenary talks the workshop covered a wide range of experimental results, Monte Carlo development and tuning, phenomenology and dedicated measurements of MPI which were produced with data from the LHC's Run I. Recent progress of theoretical understanding of MPI in pp, pA and AA collisions as well as the role of MPI in diffraction and small-x physics were also covered. The workshop forstered close contact between the experimental and theoretical communities. It provided a setting to discuss many of the different aspects of MPI, eventually identifying them as a unifying concept between apparently different lines of research and evaluating their impact on the LHC physics programme.

Herwig++ 2.7 Release Note

A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 2.7) is now available. This version comes with a number of improvements including: an interface to the Universal FeynRules Output (UFO) format allowing the simulation of a wide range of new-physics models; developments of the Matchbox framework for next-to-leading order (NLO) simulations; better treatment of QCD radiation in heavy particle decays in new-physics models; a new tune of underlying event and colour connection parameters that allows a good simultaneous description of both Tevatron and LHC underlying event data and the effective cross-section parameter for double-parton scattering.

Herwig++ 2.6 Release Note

A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 2.6) is now available. This version comes with a number of improvements including: a new structure for the implementation of next-to-leading order matrix elements; an improved treatment of wide-angle gluon radiation; new hard-coded next-to-leading order matrix elements for deep inelastic scattering and weak vector boson fusion; additional models of physics beyond the Standard Model, including the production of colour sextet particles; a statistical colour reconnection model; automated energy scaling of underlying-event tunes.

Multi-Parton Interactions at the LHC

We review the recent progress in the theoretical description and experimental observation of multiple parton interactions. Subjects covered include experimental measurements of minimum bias interactions and of the underlying event, models of soft physics implemented in Monte Carlo generators, developments in the theoretical description of multiple parton interactions and phenomenological studies of double parton scattering. This article stems from contributions presented at the Helmholtz Alliance workshop on "Multi-Parton Interactions at the LHC", DESY Hamburg, 13-15 September 2010.

ΔM_W < 10 MeV/c^2 at the LHC: a forlorn hope?

At the LHC, the measurement of the W mass with a precision of \cal{O}(10) MeV/c^2 is both mandatory and difficult. In the analysis strategies proposed so far, shortcuts have been made that are justified for proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron, but not for proton-proton collisions at the LHC. The root of the problem lies in the inadequate knowledge of parton density functions of the proton. It is argued that in order to reach a 10 MeV/c^2 precision for the W mass, more precise parton density functions of the proton are needed, and an LHC-specific analysis strategy ought to be pursued. Proposals are made on both issues.

Measurement of MW+ - MW- at LHC

This paper is the second of the series of papers proposing dedicated strategies for precision measurements of the Standard Model parameters at the LHC. The common feature of these strategies is their robustness with respect to the systematic measurement and modeling error sources. Their impact on the precision of the measured parameters is reduced using dedicated observables and dedicated measurement procedures which exploit flexibilities of the collider and detector running modes. In the present paper we focus our attention on the measurement of the charge asymmetry of the W-boson mass. This measurement is of primordial importance for the LHC experimental program, both as a direct test of the charge-sign-independent coupling of the W-bosons to the matter particles and as a necessary first step towards the precision measurement of the charge-averaged W-boson mass. We propose and evaluate the LHC-specific strategy to measure the mass difference between the positively and negatively charged W-bosons, MW+ - MW-. We show that its present precision can be improved at the LHC by a factor of 20. We argue that such a precision is beyond the reach of the standard measurement and calibration methods imported to the LHC from the Tevatron program.
