Proceedings of the Sixth International Workshop on Multiple Partonic Interactions at the Large Hadron Collider

Multiple Partonic Interactions are often crucial for interpreting results obtained at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The quest for a sound understanding of the dynamics behind MPI - particularly at this time when the LHC is due to start its "Run II" operations - has focused the aim of this workshop. MPI@LHC2014 concentrated mainly on the phenomenology of LHC measurements whilst keeping in perspective those results obtained at previous hadron colliders. The workshop has also debated some of the state-of-the-art theoretical considerations and the modeling of MPI in Monte Carlo event generators. The topics debated in the workshop included: Phenomenology of MPI processes and multiparton distributions; Considerations for the description of MPI in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD); Measuring multiple partonic interactions; Experimental results on inelastic hadronic collisions: underlying event, minimum bias, forward energy flow; Monte Carlo generator development and tuning; Connections with low-x phenomena, diffraction, heavy-ion physics and cosmic rays. In a total of 57 plenary talks the workshop covered a wide range of experimental results, Monte Carlo development and tuning, phenomenology and dedicated measurements of MPI which were produced with data from the LHC's Run I. Recent progress of theoretical understanding of MPI in pp, pA and AA collisions as well as the role of MPI in diffraction and small-x physics were also covered. The workshop forstered close contact between the experimental and theoretical communities. It provided a setting to discuss many of the different aspects of MPI, eventually identifying them as a unifying concept between apparently different lines of research and evaluating their impact on the LHC physics programme.

Multi-Parton Interactions at the LHC

We review the recent progress in the theoretical description and experimental observation of multiple parton interactions. Subjects covered include experimental measurements of minimum bias interactions and of the underlying event, models of soft physics implemented in Monte Carlo generators, developments in the theoretical description of multiple parton interactions and phenomenological studies of double parton scattering. This article stems from contributions presented at the Helmholtz Alliance workshop on "Multi-Parton Interactions at the LHC", DESY Hamburg, 13-15 September 2010.

Proceedings of the First International Workshop on Multiple Partonic Interactions at the LHC (MPI08)

The objective of this first workshop on Multiple Partonic Interactions (MPI) at the LHC is to raise the profile of MPI studies, summarizing the legacy from the older phenomenology at hadronic colliders and favouring further specific contacts between the theory and experimental communities. The MPI are experiencing a growing popularity and are currently widely invoked to account for observations that would not be explained otherwise: the activity of the Underlying Event, the cross sections for multiple heavy flavour production, the survival probability of large rapidity gaps in hard diffraction, etc. At the same time, the implementation of the MPI effects in the Monte Carlo models is quickly proceeding through an increasing level of sophistication and complexity that in perspective achieves deep general implications for the LHC physics. The ultimate ambition of this workshop is to promote the MPI as unification concept between seemingly heterogeneous research lines and to profit of the complete experimental picture in order to constrain their implementation in the models, evaluating the spin offs on the LHC physics program.

Incoherence and Multiple Parton Interactions

At the LHC Multiple Parton Interactions will represent an important feature of the minimum bias and of the underlying event and will give important contributions in many channels of interest for the search of new physics. Different numbers of multiple collision may contribute to the production of a given final state and one should expect important interference effects in the regime where different contributions have similar rates. We show, on the contrary, that, once multiple parton interactions are identified by their different topologies, terms with different numbers of multiple parton interactions do not interfere in the final cross section.

Multi-parton correlations and "exclusive" cross sections

In addition to the inclusive cross sections discussed within the QCD-parton model, in the regime of multiple parton interactions, different and more exclusive cross sections become experimentally viable and may be suitably measured. Indeed, in its study of double parton collisions, the quantity measured by CDF was an "exclusive" rather than an inclusive cross section. The non perturbative input to the "exclusive" cross sections is different with respect to the non perturbative input of the inclusive cross sections and involves correlation terms of the hadron structure already at the level of single parton collisions. The matter is discussed in details keeping explicitly into account the effects of double and of triple parton collisions.

Fractional momentum correlations in multiple production of W bosons and of b-anti_b pairs in high energy pp collisions

Multiple parton collisions will represent a rather common feature in pp collisions at the LHC, where regimes with very large momentum transfer may be studied and events rare in lower energy accelerators might occur with a significant rate. A reason of interest in large p_t regimes is that, differently from low p_t, evolution will induce correlations in x in the multiparton structure functions. We have estimated the cross section of multiple production of W bosons with equal sign, where the correlations in x induced by evolution are particularly relevant, and the cross section of b-bar_b b-bar_b production, where the effects of evolution are much smaller. Our result is that, in the case of multiple production of W bosons, the terms with correlations may represent a correction of the order of 40% of the cross sections, for pp collisions at 1 TeV c.m. energy, and a correction of the order of 20% at 14 TeV. In the case of b-bar_b pairs the correction terms are of the order of 10-15% at 1 TeV and of the order of 5% at 14 TeV.

b \bar b b\bar b production in proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC

A sizable rate of events, with several pairs of $b$-quarks produced contemporarily by multiple parton interactions, may be expected at very high energies as a consequence of the large parton luminosities. The production rates are further enhanced in hadron-nucleus reactions, which may represent a convenient tool to study the phenomenon. We compare the different contributions to $b{\bar b}b{\bar b}$ production, due to single and double parton scatterings, in collisions of protons with nuclei at the CERN-LHC.

The Chances to Produce and Detect the b-b-ubar-dbar Tetraquark at LHC

In the LHC collider a significant rate of events with double parton scattering is expected. This will be the leading mechanism for production of two b-bbar pairs. We estimate the probability of binding two b quarks into a diquark and the probability of dressing this diquark into a b-b-ubar-dbar ISP=01+ tetraquark. Calculations shows that that this bound state of two B mesons is stable against the strong interaction and has a life time of the order of ps. We estimate that the production rate at luminosity L=0.1 events per second will be about 6 tetraquarks per hour or more.

On the jet spectrum in nucleus-nucleus interactions

We derive the inclusive transverse spectrum of minijets in nuclear collisions at very high energies by assuming that the nuclear S-matrix factorizes into a product of elastic S-matrices for elementary partonic collisions. Interference effects and, in particular, the contribution of loop diagrams are fully taken into account in the derivation of the spectrum, which is shown to coincide with the result earlier obtained by superposing the elementary interactions incoherently. A quantitative analysis confirms that the deformation induced by multiple collsions is a large effect at RHIC and LHC energies, for transverse momenta ~ 20 GeV.

Final state interaction in inclusive and exclusive quasi-elastic processes

We discuss a new approach to final state interactions, that keeps explicitly into account the virtuality of the ejected nucleon in quasi-elastic $A(e,e'p)X$ scattering at very large $Q^2$, and we present some recent results, at moderately large $Q^2$ values, for the nuclear transparency in $^4He$, $^{16}O$ and $^{40}Ca$ and for the momentum distributions of $^4He$.
