Harnessing the XMM-Newton data: X-ray spectral modelling of 4XMM-DR11 detections and 4XMM-DR11s sources

The XMM-Newton X-ray observatory has played a prominent role in astrophysics, conducting precise and thorough observations of the X-ray sky for the past two decades. The most recent iteration of the 4XMM catalogue and one of its latest data releases DR11 mark significant improvements over previous XMM-Newton catalogues, serving as a cornerstone for comprehending the diverse inhabitants of the X-ray sky. We employ detections and spectra extracted from the 4XMM-DR11 catalogue, subjecting them to fitting procedures using simple models. Our study operates within the framework of the XMM2ATHENA project, which focuses on developing state-of-the-art methods that exploit existing XMM-Newton data. We introduce and publicly release four catalogues containing measurements derived from X-ray spectral modelling of sources. The first catalogue encompasses outcomes obtained by fitting an absorbed power law model to all the extracted spectra for individual detections within the 4XMM-DR11 dataset. The second catalogue presents results obtained by fitting both an absorbed power law and an absorbed blackbody model to all unique physical sources listed in the 4XMM-DR11s catalogue, which documents source detection results from overlapping XMM-Newton observations. For the third catalogue we use the five band count rates derived from the pipe line detection of X-ray sources to mimic low resolution spectra to get a rough estimate of the spectral shape (absorbed power-law) of all 4XMM-DR11 detections. In the fourth catalogue, we conduct spectral analyses for the subset of identified sources with extracted spectra, employing various models based on their classification into categories such as AGN, stars, X-ray binaries, and cataclysmic variables. The scientific potential of these catalogues is highlighted by discussing the capabilities of optical and mid-infrared colours for selecting absorbed AGN. (abridged)

Investigating episodic mass loss in evolved massive stars IV. Comprehensive analysis of dusty red supergiants in NGC 6822, IC 10, and WLM

Mass loss shapes the fate of massive stars; however, the physical mechanism causing it remains uncertain. We present a comprehensive analysis of seven red supergiants, for which we searched evidence of episodic mass loss, in three low-metallicity galaxies: NGC~6822, IC~10, and WLM. Initially, the spectral classification of their optical spectra was refined and compared to previous reported classifications, finding four sources that display spectral variability. We derived the physical properties of five of them using the \textsc{marcs} atmospheric models corrected for nonlocal thermal equilibrium effects to measure stellar properties from our new near-infrared spectra, such as the effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, and microturbulent velocity. Additional empirical and theoretical methods were employed to calculate effective temperatures, finding consistent results. We constructed optical and infrared light curves, discovering two targets in NGC~6822 with photometric variability between 1 and 2.5 mag in amplitude in r and ~ 0.5 mag in the mid-infrared. Furthermore, we discovered a candidate-dimming event in one of these sources. Periods for three red supergiants were determined using epoch photometry, which were consistent with the empirical estimations from literature period-luminosity relations. Our comprehensive analysis of all the available data for each target provides evidence for episodic mass loss in four red supergiants.

The link among X-ray spectral properties, AGN structure and the host galaxy

In this work, we compare the SMBH and host galaxy properties of X-ray obscured and unobscured AGN. For that purpose, we use $\sim 35 000$ X-ray detected AGN in the 4XMM-DR11 catalogue for which there are available measurements for their X-ray spectral parameters, from the XMM2Athena Horizon 2020 European project. We calculate the host galaxy properties via SED fitting analysis. Our final sample consists of 1 443 AGN. In the first part of our analysis, we use different N$_H$ thresholds (10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ or 10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$), taking also into account the uncertainties associated with the N$_H$ measurements, to classify these sources into obscured and unobscured. We find that obscured AGN tend to live in more massive systems that have lower SFR compared to their unobscured counterparts. However, only the difference in stellar mass, M$_*$, appears statistically significant ($>2σ$). The results do not depend on the N$_H$ threshold used to classify AGN. The differences in M$_*$ and SFR are not statistically significant for luminous AGN ($\rm log (L_{X,2-10 KeV}/erg s^{-1})> 44$). Our findings also show that unobscured AGN have, on average, higher specific black hole accretion rates compared to their obscured counterparts. In the second part of our analysis, we cross-match the 1 443 X-ray AGN with the SDSS DR16 quasar catalogue to obtain information on the SMBH properties of our sources. This results in 271 type 1 AGN, at $\rm z<1.9$. Our findings show that type 1 AGN with increased N$_H$ ($>10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) tend to have higher M$_{BH}$ compared to AGN with lower N$_H$ values, at similar M$_*$. The M$_{BH}$/M$_*$ ratio remains consistent for N$_H$ values below 10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, but it exhibits signs of an increase at higher N$_H$ values. Finally, we detect a correlation between $Γ$ and Eddington ratio, but only for type 1 sources with N$_H<10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$.

A search for X-ray absorbed sources in the 3XMM catalogue, using photometric redshifts and Bayesian spectral fits

Since its launch in 1999, the XMM-\textit{Newton} mission has compiled the largest catalogue of serendipitous X-ray sources, with the 3XMM being the third version of this catalogue. This is because of the combination of a large effective area (5000 $\rm cm^2$ at 1 keV) and a wide field of view (30 arcmin). The 3XMM-DR6 catalogue contains about 470,000 unique X-ray sources over an area of 982 $\rm deg^2$. A significant fraction of these (100,178 sources) have reliable optical, near/mid-IR counterparts in the SDSS, PANSTARRS, VIDEO, UKIDSS and WISE surveys. In a previous paper we have presented photometric redshifts for these sources using the TPZ machine learning algorithm. About one fourth of these (22,677) have adequate photon statistics so that a reliable X-ray spectrum can be extracted. Obviously, owing to both the X-ray counts selection and the optical counterpart constraint, the sample above is biased towards the bright sources. Here, we present XMMFITCAT-Z: a spectral fit catalogue for these sources using the Bayesian X-ray Analysis (BXA) technique. As a science demonstration of the potential of the present catalogue, we comment on the optical and mid-IR colours of the 765 X-ray absorbed sources with $N_\mathrm{H} > 10^{22}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$. We show that a considerable fraction of X-ray selected AGN would not be classified as AGN following the mid-IR W1-W2 vs. W2 selection criterion. These are AGN with lower luminosities, where the contribution of the host galaxy to the MIR emission is non-negligible. Only one third of obscured AGN in X-rays present red colours or r-W2 > 6. Then it appears that the r-W2 criterion, often used in the literature for the selection of obscured AGN, produces very different X-ray absorbed AGN samples compared to the standard X-ray selection criteria.

The RapidXMM Upper Limit Server: X-ray aperture photometry of the XMM-Newton archival observations

This paper presents the construction of the RapidXMM database that is available through the XMM-Newton Science Archive and offers access to upper limits and aperture photometry across the field of view of the XMM-Newton Pointed and Slew Survey observations. The feature of RapidXMM is speed. It enables the fast retrieval of X-ray upper limits and photometry products in three energy bands (0.2-2, 2-12, 0.2-12 keV) for large numbers of input sky positions. This is accomplished using the Hierarchical Equal Area Iso Latitude pixelation of the sphere (HEALPix). The pre-calculated upper-limits and associated X-ray photometry products are reprojected into the HEALPix grid of cells before being ingested into the RapidXMM database. This results in tables of upper limits and aperture photometry within HEALPix cells of size ~3 arcsec (Pointed Observations) and ~6 arcsec (Slew Survey). The database tables are indexed by the unique integer number of the HEALPix cells. This reduces spatial nearest-neighbor queries by sky position to an integer-matching exercise and significantly accelerates the retrieval of results. We describe in detail the processing steps that lead from the science products available in the XMM-Newton archive to a database optimised for sky queries. We also present two simple show-case applications of RapidXMM for scientific studies: searching for variable X-ray sources, and stacking analysis of X-ray faint populations

XXL-HSC: An updated catalogue of high-redshift ($z\geqslant3.5$) X-ray AGN in the XMM-XXL northern field. Constraints on the bright end of the soft logN-logS

X-rays offer a reliable method to identify Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). However, in the high-redshift Universe X-ray AGN are poorly sampled due to their relatively low space density and the small areas covered by X-ray surveys. In addition to wide-area X-ray surveys, it is important to have deep optical data in order to locate the optical counterparts and determine their redshifts. In this work, we build a high-redshift ($z\geqslant3.5$) X-ray selected AGN sample in the XMM-XXL northern field using the most updated [0.5-2 keV] catalogue along with a plethora of new spectroscopic and multi-wavelength catalogues, including the deep optical Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) data reaching magnitude limits i$\sim$26 mag. We select all the spectroscopically confirmed AGN and complement this sample with high-redshift candidates that are HSC g- and r-band dropouts. To confirm the dropouts, we derive their photometric redshifts using spectral energy distribution techniques. We end up with a sample of 54 high-z sources (28 with spec-z), the largest in this field so far (almost three times larger than in previous studies), and we estimate the possible contamination and completeness. We calculate the number counts (logN-logS) in different redshift bins and compare our results with previous studies and models. We provide the strongest high-redshift AGN constraints yet at bright fluxes ($\rm f_{0.5-2~keV} > 10^{-15} erg~s^{-1}~cm^{-2}$). The samples of $z\geqslant3.5$, $z\geqslant4$ and $z\geqslant5$ are in agreement with an exponential decline model similar to that witnessed at optical wavelengths. Our work emphasizes the importance of using wide area X-ray surveys with deep optical data to uncover high redshift AGN.

An obscured AGN population hidden in the VIPERS galaxies: identification through spectral energy distribution decomposition

The detection of X-ray emission constitutes a reliable and efficient tool for the selection of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), although it may be biased against the most heavily absorbed AGNs. Simple mid-IR broad-band selection criteria identify a large number of luminous and absorbed AGNs, yet again host contamination could lead to non-uniform and incomplete samples. Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) decomposition is able to decouple the emission from the AGN versus that from star-forming regions, revealing weaker AGN components. We aim to identify the obscured AGN population in the VIPERS survey in the CFHTLS W1 field through SED modelling. We construct SEDs for 6,860 sources and identify 160 AGNs at a high confidence level using a Bayesian approach. Using optical spectroscopy, we confirm the nature of ~85% of the AGNs. Our AGN sample is highly complete (~92%) compared to mid-IR colour selected AGNs, including a significant number of galaxy-dominated systems with lower luminosities. In addition to the lack of X-ray emission (80%), the SED fitting results suggest that the majority of the sources are obscured. We use a number of diagnostic criteria in the optical, infrared and X-ray regime to verify these results. Interestingly, only 35% of the most luminous mid-IR selected AGNs have X-ray counterparts suggesting strong absorption. Our work emphasizes the importance of using SED decomposition techniques to select a population of type II AGNs, which may remain undetected by either X-ray or IR colour surveys.

Impact of disorder on dynamics and ordering in the honeycomb lattice iridate Na$_2$IrO$_3$

Kitaev's honeycomb spin-liquid model and its proposed realization in materials such as $α$-RuCl$_3$, Li$_2$IrO$_3$ and Na$_2$IrO$_3$ continue to present open questions about how the dynamics of a spin-liquid are modified in the presence of non-Kitaev interactions as well as the presence of inhomogeneities. Here we use $^{23}$Na nuclear magnetic resonance to probe both static and dynamical magnetic properties in single crystal Na$_2$IrO$_3$. We find that the NMR shift follows the bulk susceptibility above 30 K but deviates from it below; moreover below $T_N$ the spectra show a broad distribution of internal magnetic fields. Both of these results provide evidence for inequivalent magnetic sites at low temperature, suggesting inhomogeneities are important for the magnetism. The spin-lattice relaxation rate is isotropic and diverges at $T_N$, suggesting that the Kitaev cubic axes may control the critical quantum spin fluctuations. In the ordered state, we observe gapless excitations, which may arise from site substitution, emergent defects from milder disorder, or possibly be associated with nearby quantum paramagnetic states distinct from the Kitaev spin liquid.

Obscuration properties of mid-IR selected AGN

The goal of this work is to study the obscuration properties of mid-infrared (mid-IR) selected AGN. For that purpose, we use {\it{WISE}} sources in the Stripe 82-XMM area to identify mid-IR AGN candidates, applying the Assef et al. criteria. Stripe 82 has optical photometry $\approx$\,2 times deeper than any single-epoch SDSS region. XMM-Newton observations cover $\sim$26\,deg$^2$. Applying the aforementioned criteria, 1946 IR AGN are selected. $\sim 78\%$ have SDSS detection, while 1/3 of them is detected in X-rays, at a flux limit of $\rm \sim 5 \times 10^{-15}\,erg\,s^{-1}\,cm^{-2}$. Our final sample consists of 507 IR AGN with X-ray detection and optical spectra. Applying a $\rm r-W2>6$ colour criterion, we find that the fraction of optically red AGN drops from 43\% for those sources with SDSS detection to $23\%$ for sources that also have X-ray detection. X-ray spectral fitting reveals 40 ($\sim8\%$) X-ray absorbed AGN ($\rm N_H>10^{22}~cm^{-2}$). Among the X-ray unabsorbed AGN, there are 70 red systems. To further investigate the absorption of these sources, we construct Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) for the total IR AGN sample. SED fitting reveals that $\sim20\%$ of the optically red sources have such colours because the galaxy emission is a primary component in the optical part of the SED, even though the AGN emission is not absorbed at these wavelengths. SED fitting also confirms that $12\%$ of the X-ray unabsorbed, IR AGN are optically obscured.

$λ-$Symmetries and integrability by quadratures

It is investigated how two (standard or generalized) $λ-$symmetries of a given second-order ordinary differential equation can be used to solve the equation by quadratures. The method is based on the construction of two commuting generalized symmetries for this equation by using both $λ-$symmetries. The functions used in that construction are related with integrating factors of the reduced and auxiliary equations associated to the $λ-$symmetries. These functions can also be used to derive a Jacobi last multiplier and two integrating factors for the given equation. Some examples illustrate the method; one of them is included in the XXVII case of the Painlevé-Gambier classification. An explicit expression of its general solution in terms of two fundamental sets of solutions for two related second-order linear equations is also obtained.

Measurement of $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$ using $e^+e^-$ pairs from $γ^*/Z$ bosons produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-momentum energy of 1.96 TeV

At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collider, Drell-Yan lepton pairs are produced in the process $p \bar{p} \rightarrow e^+e^- + X$ through an intermediate $γ^*/Z$ boson. The forward-backward asymmetry in the polar-angle distribution of the $e^-$ as a function of the $e^+e^-$-pair mass is used to obtain $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$, the effective leptonic determination of the electroweak-mixing parameter $\sin^2θ_W$. The measurement sample, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF), corresponds to 9.4~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity from $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-momentum energy of 1.96 TeV, and is the full CDF Run II data set. The value of $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$ is found to be $0.23248 \pm 0.00053$. The combination with the previous CDF measurement based on $μ^+μ^-$ pairs yields $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff} = 0.23221 \pm 0.00046$. This result, when interpreted within the specified context of the standard model assuming $\sin^2 θ_W = 1 - M_W^2/M_Z^2$ and that the $W$- and $Z$-boson masses are on-shell, yields $\sin^2θ_W = 0.22400 \pm 0.00045$, or equivalently a $W$-boson mass of $80.328 \pm 0.024 \;{\rm GeV}/c^2$.

Measurement of the $WW$ and $WZ$ production cross section using final states with a charged lepton and heavy-flavor jets in the full CDF Run II data set

We present a measurement of the total {\it WW} and {\it WZ} production cross sections in $p\bar{p}$ collision at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV, in a final state consistent with leptonic $W$ boson decay and jets originating from heavy-flavor quarks from either a $W$ or a $Z$ boson decay. This analysis uses the full data set collected with the CDF II detector during Run II of the Tevatron collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$. An analysis of the dijet mass spectrum provides $3.7σ$ evidence of the summed production processes of either {\it WW} or {\it WZ} bosons with a measured total cross section of $σ_{WW+WZ} = 13.7\pm 3.9$~pb. Independent measurements of the {\it WW} and {\it WZ} production cross sections are allowed by the different heavy-flavor decay-patterns of the $W$ and $Z$ bosons and by the analysis of secondary-decay vertices reconstructed within heavy-flavor jets. The productions of {\it WW} and of {\it WZ} dibosons are independently seen with significances of $2.9σ$ and $2.1σ$, respectively, with total cross sections of $σ_{WW}= 9.4\pm 4.2$~pb and $σ_{WZ}=3.7^{+2.5}_{-2.2}$~pb. The measurements are consistent with standard-model predictions.

Measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in low-mass bottom-quark pairs produced in proton-antiproton collisions

We report a measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry, $A_{FB}$, in $b\bar{b}$ pairs produced in proton-antiproton collisions and identified by muons from semileptonic $b$-hadron decays. The event sample was collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV with the CDF II detector and corresponds to 6.9 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We obtain an integrated asymmetry of $A_{FB}(b\bar{b})=(1.2 \pm 0.7)$\% at the particle level for $b$-quark pairs with invariant mass, $m_{b\bar{b}}$, down to $40$ GeV/$c^2$ and measure the dependence of $A_{FB}(b\bar{b})$ on $m_{b\bar{b}}$. The results are compatible with expectations from the standard model.

Measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry of top-quark and antiquark pairs using the full CDF Run II data set

We measure the forward--backward asymmetry of the production of top quark and antiquark pairs in proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 1.96~\mathrm{TeV}$ using the full data set collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in Tevatron Run II corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9.1~\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The asymmetry is characterized by the rapidity difference between top quarks and antiquarks ($Δy$), and measured in the final state with two charged leptons (electrons and muons). The inclusive asymmetry, corrected to the entire phase space at parton level, is measured to be $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}} = 0.12 \pm 0.13$, consistent with the expectations from the standard-model (SM) and previous CDF results in the final state with a single charged lepton. The combination of the CDF measurements of the inclusive $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}$ in both final states yields $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}=0.160\pm0.045$, which is consistent with the SM predictions. We also measure the differential asymmetry as a function of $Δy$. A linear fit to $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}(|Δy|)$, assuming zero asymmetry at $Δy=0$, yields a slope of $α=0.14\pm0.15$, consistent with the SM prediction and the previous CDF determination in the final state with a single charged lepton. The combined slope of $A_{\text{FB}}^{t\bar{t}}(|Δy|)$ in the two final states is $α=0.227\pm0.057$, which is $2.0σ$ larger than the SM prediction.

Measurement of vector boson plus $D^{*}(2010)^+$ meson production in $\bar{p}p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96\, {\rm TeV}$

A measurement of vector boson ($V$) production in conjunction with a $D^{*}(2010)^+$ meson is presented. Using a data sample corresponding to $9.7\, {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of ^Mproton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=1.96\rm~ TeV$ produced by the Fermilab Tevatron, we reconstruct $V+D^{*+}$ samples with the CDF~II detector. The $D^{*+}$ is fully reconstructed in the $D^{*}(2010)^+ \rightarrow D^{0}(\to K^-π^+)π^+$ decay mode. This technique is sensitive to the associated production of vector boson plus charm or bottom mesons. We measure the ratio of production cross sections $σ(W+D^{*})/σ(W)$ = $[1.75\pm 0.13 {\rm (stat)}\pm 0.09 {\rm (syst)}]\% $ and $σ(Z+D^{*})/σ(Z)$ = $[1.5\pm 0.4 {\rm (stat)} \pm 0.2 {\rm (syst)}]\% $ and perform a differential measurement of $dσ(W+D^{*})/dp_T(D^{*})$. Event properties are utilized to determine the fraction of $V+D^{*}(2010)^+$ events originating from different production processes. The results are in agreement with the predictions obtained with the {\sc pythia} program, limiting possible contribution from non-standard-model physics processes.

Measuring social complexity and the emergence of cooperation from entropic principles

Assessing quantitatively the state and dynamics of a social system is a very difficult problem. It is of great importance for both practical and theoretical reasons such as establishing the efficiency of social action programs, detecting possible community needs or allocating resources. In this paper we propose a new general theoretical framework for the study of social complexity, based on the relation of complexity and entropy in combination with evolutionary dynamics to asses the dynamics of the system. Imposing the second law of thermodynamics, we study the conditions under which cooperation emerges and demonstrate that it depends of relative importance of local and global fitness. As cooperation is a central concept in sustainability, this thermodynamic-informational approach allows new insights and means to asses it using the concept of Helmholtz free energy. Finally we introduce a new set of equations that consider the more general case where the social system change both in time and space, and relate our findings to sustainability.

Search for a Low-Mass Neutral Higgs Boson with Suppressed Couplings to Fermions Using Events with Multiphoton Final States

A search for a Higgs boson with suppressed couplings to fermions, $h_f$, assumed to be the neutral, lower-mass partner of the Higgs boson discovered at the Large Hadron Collider, is reported. Such a Higgs boson could exist in extensions of the standard model with two Higgs doublets, and could be produced via $p\bar{p} \to H^\pm h_f \to W^* h_f h_f \to 4γ+ X$, where $H^\pm$ is a charged Higgs boson. This analysis uses all events with at least three photons in the final state from proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96~TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.2~${\rm fb}^{-1}$. No evidence of a signal is observed in the data. Values of Higgs-boson masses between 10 and 100 GeV/$c^2$ are excluded at 95\% Bayesian credibility.

The MIXR sample: AGN activity versus star formation across the cross-correlation of WISE, 3XMM, and FIRST/NVSS

We cross-correlate the largest available Mid-Infrared (WISE), X-ray (3XMM) and Radio (FIRST+NVSS) catalogues to define the MIXR sample of AGN and star-forming galaxies. We pre-classify the sources based on their positions on the WISE colour/colour plot, showing that the MIXR triple selection is extremely effective to diagnose the star formation and AGN activity of individual populations, even on a flux/magnitude basis, extending the diagnostics to objects with luminosities and redshifts from SDSS DR12. We recover the radio/mid-IR star formation correlation with great accuracy, and use it to classify our sources, based on their activity, as radio-loud and radio-quiet AGN, LERGs/LINERs, and non-AGN galaxies. These diagnostics can prove extremely useful for large AGN and galaxy samples, and help develop ways to efficiently triage sources when data from the next generation of instruments becomes available. We study bias in detail, and show that while the widely-used WISE colour selections for AGN are very successful at cleanly selecting samples of luminous AGN, they miss or misclassify a substantial fraction of AGN at lower luminosities and/or higher redshifts. MIXR also allows us to test the relation between radiative and kinetic (jet) power in radio-loud AGN, for which a tight correlation is expected due to a mutual dependence on accretion. Our results highlight that long-term AGN variability, jet regulation, and other factors affecting the $Q/L$$_{bol}$ relation, are introducing a vast amount of scatter in this relation, with dramatic potential consequences on our current understanding of AGN feedback and its effect on star formation.

A Study of the Energy Dependence of the Underlying Event in Proton-Antiproton Collisions

We study charged particle production in proton-antiproton collisions at 300 GeV, 900 GeV, and 1.96 TeV. We use the direction of the charged particle with the largest transverse momentum in each event to define three regions of eta-phi space; toward, away, and transverse. The average number and the average scalar pT sum of charged particles in the transverse region are sensitive to the modeling of the underlying event. The transverse region is divided into a MAX and MIN transverse region, which helps separate the hard component (initial and final-state radiation) from the beam-beam remnant and multiple parton interaction components of the scattering. The center-of-mass energy dependence of the various components of the event are studied in detail. The data presented here can be used to constrain and improve QCD Monte Carlo models, resulting in more precise predictions at the LHC energies of 13 and 14 TeV.

Exploring the Active Galactic Nuclei population with extreme X-ray to optical flux ratios (Fx/Fo >50)

The cosmic history of the growth of supermassive black holes in galactic centers parallels that of star-formation in the Universe. However, an important fraction of this growth occurs inconspicuously in obscured objects, where ultraviolet/optical/near-infrared emission is heavily obscured by dust. Since the X-ray flux is less attenuated, a high X-ray-to-optical flux ratio (Fx/Fo) is expected to be an efficient tool to find out these obscured accreting sources. We explore here via optical spectroscopy, X-ray spectroscopy and infrared photometry the most extreme cases of this population (those with Fx/Fo >50, EXO50 sources hereafter), using a well defined sample of seven X-ray sources extracted from the 2XMM catalogue. Five EXO50 sources (about 70 percent of the sample) in the bright flux regime explored by our survey (f(2-10 keV) > 1.5E-13 cgs) are associated with obscured AGN (Nh > 1.0E22 cm-2), spanning a redshift range between 0.75 and 1 and characterised by 2-10 keV intrinsic luminosities in the QSO regime (e.g. well in excess to 1.0E44 cgs). We did not find compelling evidence of Compton Thick AGN. Overall the EXO50 Type 2 QSOs do not seem to be different from standard X-ray selected Type 2 QSOs in terms of nuclear absorption; a very high AGN/host galaxy ratio seems to play a major role in explaining their extreme properties. Interestingly three out of five EXO50 Type 2 QSO objects can be classified as Extreme Dust Obscured Galaxies (EDOGs), suggesting that a very high AGN/host ratios (along with the large amount of dust absorption) could be the natural explanation also for a part of the EDOG population. The remaining two EXO50 sources are classified as BL Lac objects, having rather extreme properties, and which are good candidates for TeV emission.

First measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in bottom-quark pair production at high mass

We measure the particle-level forward-backward production asymmetry in $b\bar{b}$ pairs with masses $m(b\bar{b})$ larger than 150 GeV/$c^2$, using events with hadronic jets and employing jet charge to distinguish $b$ from $\bar{b}$. The measurement uses 9.5/fb of ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II detector. The asymmetry as a function of $m(b\bar{b})$ is consistent with zero, as well as with the predictions of the standard model. The measurement disfavors a simple model including an axigluon with a mass of 200 GeV/$c^2$ whereas a model containing a heavier 345 GeV/$c^2$ axigluon is not excluded.

Measurement of central exclusive pi+pi- production in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9 and 1.96 TeV at CDF

We measure exclusive $π^+π^-$ production in proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9 and 1.96 TeV in the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We select events with two oppositely charged particles, assumed to be pions, with pseudorapidity $|η| < 1.3$ and with no other particles detected in $|η| < 5.9$. We require the $π^+π^-$ system to have rapidity $|y|<$ 1.0. The production mechanism of these events is expected to be dominated by double pomeron exchange, which constrains the quantum numbers of the central state. The data are potentially valuable for isoscalar meson spectroscopy and for understanding the pomeron in a region of transition between nonperturbative and perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The data extend up to dipion mass $M(π^+π^-)$ = 5000 MeV/$c^2$ and show resonance structures attributed to $f_0$ and $f_2(1270)$ mesons. Measurement of indirect CP-violating asymmetries in $D^0\to K^+K^-$ and $D^0\to π^+π^-$ decays at CDF

We report a measurement of the indirect CP-violating asymmetries ($A_Γ$) between effective lifetimes of anticharm and charm mesons reconstructed in $D^0\to K^+ K^-$ and $D^0\to π^+π^-$ decays. We use the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab experiment and corresponding to $9.7$~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The strong-interaction decay $D^{*+}\to D^0π^+$ is used to identify the meson at production as $D^0$ or $\overline{D}^0$. We statistically subtract $D^0$ and $\overline{D}^0$ mesons originating from $b$-hadron decays and measure the yield asymmetry between anticharm and charm decays as a function of decay time. We measure $A_Γ(K^+K^-) = (-0.19 \pm 0.15 (stat) \pm 0.04 (syst))\%$ and $A_Γ(π^+π^-)= (-0.01 \pm 0.18 (stat) \pm 0.03 (syst))\%$. The results are consistent with the hypothesis of CP symmetry and their combination yields $A_Γ= (-0.12 \pm 0.12)\%$.

Measurement of the production and differential cross sections of $W^{+}W^{-}$ bosons in association with jets in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV

We present a measurement of the $W$-boson-pair production cross section in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy and the first measurement of the differential cross section as a function of jet multiplicity and leading-jet energy. The $W^{+}W^{-}$ cross section is measured in the final state comprising two charged leptons and neutrinos, where either charged lepton can be an electron or a muon. Using data collected by the CDF experiment corresponding to $9.7~\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, a total of $3027$ collision events consistent with $W^{+}W^{-}$ production are observed with an estimated background contribution of $1790\pm190$ events. The measured total cross section is $σ(p\bar{p} \rightarrow W^{+}W^{-}) = 14.0 \pm 0.6~(\rm{stat})^{+1.2}_{-1.0}~(\rm{syst})\pm0.8~(\rm{lumi})$ pb, consistent with the standard model prediction.

We report a measurement of single top quark production in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using a data set corresponding to 7.5 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We select events consistent with the single top quark decay process t \to Wb \to lνb by requiring the presence of an electron or muon, a large imbalance of transverse momentum indicating the presence of a neutrino, and two or three jets including at least one originating from a bottom quark. An artificial neural network is used to discriminate the signal from backgrounds. Measurement of the top-quark mass in the ${t\bar{t}}$ dilepton channel using the full CDF Run II data set

We present a measurement of the top-quark mass in events containing two leptons (electrons or muons) with a large transverse momentum, two or more energetic jets, and a transverse-momentum imbalance. We use the full proton-antiproton collision data set collected by the CDF experiment during the Fermilab Tevatron Run~II at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.1 fb$^{-1}$. A special observable is exploited for an optimal reduction of the dominant systematic uncertainty, associated with the knowledge of the absolute energy of the hadronic jets. The distribution of this observable in the selected events is compared to simulated distributions of ${t\bar{t}}$ dilepton signal and background. We measure a value for the top-quark mass of $171.5\pm 1.9~{\rm (stat)}\pm 2.5~{\rm (syst)}$ GeV/$c^2$.

Photoexcited states of the harmonic honeycomb iridate γ-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We report equilibrium and nonequilibrium optical measurements on the recently synthesized "harmonic" honeycomb iridate γ-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ (LIO), as well as the layered honeycomb iridate Na$_2$IrO$_3$ (NIO). Using Fourier transform infrared microscopy we performed reflectance measurements on LIO, from which we obtained the optical conductivity below 2 eV. In addition we measured the photoinduced changed in reflectance, ΔR, as a function of time, t, temperature, T, and probe field polarization in both LIO and NIO. In LIO, ΔR(t,T) is anisotropic and comprised of three T dependent components. Two of these components are related to the onset of magnetic order and the third is related to a photoinduced population of metastable electronic excited states. In NIO, ΔR(t,T) has a single T dependent component that is strikingly similar to the electronic excitation component of ΔR in LIO. Through analysis and comparison of ΔR(t,T) for two compounds, we extract information on the onset of magnetic correlations at and above the transition temperature in LIO, the bare spin-flip scattering rate in equilibrium, the lifetime of low-lying quasiparticle excitations, and the polarization dependence of optical transitions that are sensitive to magnetic order.

Search for Resonances Decaying to Top and Bottom Quarks with the CDF Experiment

We report on a search for charged massive resonances decaying to top ($t$) and bottom ($b$) quarks in the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV collected by the CDF~II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.5 $fb^{-1}$. No significant excess above the standard model (SM) background prediction is observed. We set 95% Bayesian credibility mass-dependent upper limits on the heavy charged particle production cross section times branching ratio to $t b$. Using a SM extension with a $W^{\prime}$ and left-right-symmetric couplings as a benchmark model, we constrain the $W^{\prime}$ mass and couplings in the 300 to 900 GeV/$c^2$ range. The limits presented here are the most stringent for a charged resonance with mass in the range 300 -- 600 GeV/$c^2$ decaying to top and bottom quarks.

First Search for Exotic Z Boson Decays into Photons and Neutral Pions in Hadron Collisions

A search for forbidden and exotic Z boson decays in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented for the first time in hadron collisions, based on data corresponding to 10.0 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity from proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF experiment. No evidence of signal is observed, and 95% credibility level Bayesian upper limits are set on the branching ratios of decays of the Z boson to a photon and neutral pion (which is detected as a photon), a pair of photons, and a pair of neutral pions. The observed branching ratio limits are 2.01 x 10^-5 for Z to π^0γ, 1.46 x 10^-5 for Z to γγ, and 1.52 x 10^-5 for Z to π^0π^0. The Z to π^0γ and Z to γγ limits improve by factors of 2.6 and 3.6, respectively, the most stringent results from other experiments. Indirect measurement of $\sin^2 θ_W$ (or $M_W$) using $μ^+μ^-$ pairs from $γ^*/Z$ bosons produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-momentum energy of 1.96 TeV

Drell-Yan lepton pairs are produced in the process $p\bar{p} \rightarrow μ^+μ^- + X$ through an intermediate $γ^*/Z$ boson. The forward-backward asymmetry in the polar-angle distribution of the $μ^-$ as a function of the invariant mass of the $μ^+μ^-$ pair is used to obtain the effective leptonic determination $\sin^2 θ^{lept}_{eff}$ of the electroweak-mixing parameter $\sin^2 θ_W$, from which the value of $\sin^2 θ_W$ is derived assuming the standard model. The measurement sample, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF), corresponds to 9.2 fb-1 of integrated luminosity from $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-momentum energy of 1.96 TeV, and is the full CDF Run II data set. The value of $\sin^2 θ^{lept}_{eff}$ is found to be 0.2315 +- 0.0010, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined in quadrature. When interpreted within the context of the standard model using the on-shell renormalization scheme, where $\sin^2 θ_W = 1 - M_W^2/M_Z^2$, the measurement yields $\sin^2 θ_W$ = 0.2233 +- 0.0009, or equivalently a W-boson mass of 80.365 +- 0.047 GeV/c^2. The value of the W-boson mass is in agreement with previous determinations in electron-positron collisions and at the Tevatron collider.

Study of Top-Quark Production and Decays involving a Tau Lepton at CDF and Limits on a Charged-Higgs Boson Contribution

We present an analysis of top-antitop quark production and decay into a tau lepton, tau neutrino, and bottom quark using data from $9 {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Dilepton events, where one lepton is an energetic electron or muon and the other a hadronically-decaying tau lepton, originating from proton-antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV$ are used. We present new measurements of the inclusive forward-backward ttbar production asymmetry, AFB, and its dependence on several properties of the ttbar system. The measurements are performed with the full Tevatron data set recorded with the CDF II detector during ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb^(-1). We measure the asymmetry using the rapidity difference Delta-y=y_(t)-y_(tbar). Parton-level results are derived, yielding an inclusive asymmetry of 0.164+/-0.047 (stat + syst). We observe a linear dependence of AFB on the top-quark pair mass M(ttbar) and the rapidity difference |Delta-y| at detector and parton levels. Assuming the standard model, the probabilities to observe the measured values or larger for the detector-level dependencies are 7.4*10^(-3) and 2.2*10^(-3) for M(ttbar) and |Delta-y| respectively. Lastly, we study the dependence of the asymmetry on the transverse momentum of the ttbar system at the detector level. These results are consistent with previous lower-precision measurements and provide additional quantification of the functional dependencies of the asymmetry.

Observation of D0-D0bar Mixing using the CDF II Detector

We measure the time dependence of the ratio of decay rates for D0 -> K+ pi- to the Cabibbo-favored decay D0 -> K- pi+. The charge conjugate decays are included. A signal of 3.3 x 10^4 D*+ -> pi+ D0, D0 -> K+ pi- decays is obtained with D0 proper decay times between 0.75 and 10 mean D0 lifetimes. The data were recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.6 fb-1 for p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. Assuming CP conservation, we search for D0-D0bar mixing and measure the mixing parameters to be R_D = (3.51 +/- 0.35) x 10^{-3}, y' = (4.3 +/- 4.3) x 10^{-3}, and x'^2 = (0.08 +/- 0.18) x 10^{-3}. We report Bayesian probability intervals in the x'^2 - y' plane and find that the significance of excluding the no-mixing hypothesis is equivalent to 6.1 Gaussian standard deviations, providing the second observation of D0-D0bar mixing from a single experiment.

Search for new physics in trilepton events and limits on the associated chargino-neutralino production at CDF

We perform a search for new physics using final states consisting of three leptons and a large imbalance in transverse momentum resulting from proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. We use data corresponding to 5.8 fb-1 of integrated luminosity recorded by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron collider. Our main objective is to investigate possible new low-momentum (down to 5 GeV/c) multi-leptonic final states not investigated by LHC experiments. Relative to previous CDF analyses, we expand the geometric and kinematic coverage of electrons and muons and utilize tau leptons that decay hadronically. Inclusion of tau leptons is particularly important for supersymmetry (SUSY) searches. The results are consistent with standard-model predictions. By optimizing our event selection to increase sensitivity to the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) SUSY model, we set limits on the associated production of chargino and neutralino, the SUSY partners of the electroweak gauge bosons. We exclude cross sections up to 0.1 pb and chargino masses up to 168 GeV/c^2 at 95% CL, for a suited set of mSUGRA parameters. We also exclude a region of the two-dimensional space of the masses of the neutralino and the supersymmetric partner of the tau lepton, not previously excluded at the Tevatron.

Search for the production of ZW and ZZ boson pairs decaying into charged leptons and jets in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV

We present a measurement of the production cross section for ZW and ZZ boson pairs in final states with a pair of charged leptons, from the decay of a Z boson, and at least two jets, from the decay of a W or Z boson, using the full sample of proton-antiproton collisions recorded with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to 8.9 fb^(-1) of integrated luminosity. We increase the sensitivity to vector boson decays into pairs of quarks using a neural network discriminant that exploits the differences between the spatial spread of energy depositions and charged-particle momenta contained within the jet of particles originating from quarks and gluons. Additionally, we employ new jet energy corrections to Monte Carlo simulations that account for differences in the observed energy scales for quark and gluon jets. The number of signal events is extracted through a simultaneous fit to the dijet mass spectrum in three classes of events: events likely to contain jets with a heavy-quark decay, events likely to contain jets originating from light quarks, and events that fail these identification criteria. We determine the production cross section to be 2.5 +2.0 -1.0 pb (< 6.1 pb at the 95% confidence level), consistent with the standard model prediction of 5.1 pb.

Searches for the Higgs boson decaying to W^{+} W^{-} -> l^{+}nu l^{-}nubar with the CDF II detector

We present a search for a standard model Higgs boson decaying to two $W$ bosons that decay to leptons using the full data set collected with the CDF II detector in $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV $p\bar{p}$ collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.7 fb${}^{-1}$. We obtain no evidence for production of a standard model Higgs boson with mass between 110 and 200 GeV/$c^2$, and place upper limits on the production cross section within this range. We exclude standard model Higgs boson production at the 95% confidence level in the mass range between 149 and 172 GeV/$c^2$, while expecting to exclude, in the absence of signal, the range between 155 and 175 GeV/$c^2$. We also interpret the search in terms of standard model Higgs boson production in the presence of a fourth generation of fermions and within the context of a fermiophobic Higgs boson model. For the specific case of a standard model-like Higgs boson in the presence of fourth-generation fermions, we exclude at the 95% confidence level Higgs boson production in the mass range between 124 and 200 GeV/$c^2$, while expecting to exclude, in the absence of signal, the range between 124 and 221 GeV/$c^2$.

Uncovering obscured luminous AGN with WISE

Mateos et al. (2012) presented a highly reliable and efficient mid-infrared (MIR) colour-based selection technique for luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) using the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) survey. Here we evaluate the effectiveness of this technique to identify obscured AGN missed in X-ray surveys. To do so we study the WISE properties of AGN independently selected in hard X-ray and optical surveys. We use the largest catalogue of 887 [O III]λ5007-selected type 2 quasars (QSO2s) at z<0.83 in the literature from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the 258 hard (>4.5 keV) X-ray-selected AGN from the Bright Ultrahard XMM-Newton Survey (BUXS). The fraction of SDSS QSO2s in our infrared AGN selection region (wedge) increases with the AGN luminosity, reaching 66.1+4.5_4.7% at the highest [O III] luminosities in the sample. This fraction is substantially lower than for the BUXS type 1 AGN (96.1+3.0_6.3%), but consistent, within the uncertainties, with that for the BUXS type 2 AGN (75.0+14.1_19.1%) with the same luminosity. The SDSS QSO2s appear to reside in more luminous (massive) hosts than the BUXS AGN, due to the tight magnitude limits applied in the SDSS spectroscopic target selection. Since host galaxy dilution can reduce substantially the effectiveness of MIR-based techniques, this may explain the lower fraction of SDSS QSO2s in the WISE AGN wedge. The fraction of SDSS QSO2s identified as Compton-thick candidates that fall in the wedge is consistent with the fraction of all SDSS QSO2s in that zone. At the AGN luminosities involved in the comparison, Compton-thick and Compton-thin SDSS QSO2s have similar WISE colour distributions. We conclude that at high luminosities and z<1 our MIR technique is very effective at identifying both Compton-thin and Compton-thick AGN.

Updated search for the standard model Higgs boson in events with jets and missing transverse energy using the full CDF data set

We present an updated search for the Higgs boson produced in association with a vector boson in the final state with missing transverse energy and two jets. We use the full CDF data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb${}^{-1}$ at a proton-antiproton center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV. New to this analysis is the inclusion of a $b$-jet identification algorithm specifically optimized for $H\to b\bar{b}$ searches. Across the Higgs boson mass range $90 \le m_H \le 150$ GeV$/c^2$, the expected 95% credibility level upper limits on the $V H$ production cross section times the $H\to b\bar{b}$ branching fraction are improved by an average of 14% relative to the previous analysis. At a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV$/c^2$, the observed (expected) limit is 3.06 (3.33) times the standard model prediction, corresponding to one of the most sensitive searches to date in this final state.

A search for dark matter in events with one jet and missing transverse energy in pp-bar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

We present the results of a search for dark matter production in the monojet signature. We analyze a sample of Tevatron pp-bar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7/fb recorded by the CDF II detector. In events with large missing transverse energy and one energetic jet, we find good agreement between the standard model prediction and the observed data. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the dark matter production rate. The limits are translated into bounds on nucleon-dark matter scattering rates which are competitive with current direct detection bounds on spin-independent interaction below a dark matter candidate mass of 5 GeV/c^2, and on spin-dependent interactions up to masses of 200 GeV/c^2.

An inclusive search for the Higgs boson in the four-lepton final state at CDF

An inclusive search for the standard model Higgs boson using the four-lepton final state in proton-antiproton collisions produced by the Tevatron at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV is conducted. The data are recorded by the CDF II detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.7 /fb. Three distinct Higgs decay modes, namely ZZ, WW, and tau-tau, are simultaneously probed. Nine potential signal events are selected and found to be consistent with the background expectation. We set a 95% credibility limit on the production cross section times the branching ratio and subsequent decay to the four lepton final state for hypothetical Higgs boson masses between 120 GeV/c^2 and 300 GeV/c^2.

Analysis of Spitzer-IRS spectra of hyperluminous infrared galaxies

Hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HLIRG) are the most luminous persistent objects in the Universe. They exhibit extremely high star formation rates, and most of them seem to harbour an AGN. They are unique laboratories to investigate the most extreme star formation, and its connection to super-massive black hole growth. The AGN and SB relative contributions to the total output in these objects is still debated. Our aim is to disentangle the AGN and SB emission of a sample of thirteen HLIRG. We have studied the MIR low resolution spectra of a sample of thirteen HLIRG obtained with the IRS on board Spitzer. The 5-8 μm range is an optimal window to detect AGN activity even in a heavily obscured environment. We performed a SB/AGN decomposition of the continuum using templates, successfully applied for ULIRG in previous works. The MIR spectra of all sources is largely dominated by AGN emission. Converting the 6 μm luminosity into IR luminosity, we found that ~80% of the sample shows an IR output dominated by the AGN emission. However, the SB activity is significant in all sources (mean SB contribution ~30%), showing star formation rates ~300-3000 solar masses per year. Using X-ray and MIR data we estimated the dust covering factor (CF) of these HLIRG, finding that a significant fraction presents a CF consistent with unity. Along with the high X-ray absorption shown by these sources, this suggests that large amounts of dust and gas enshroud the nucleus of these HLIRG, as also observed in ULIRG. Our results are in agreement with previous studies of the IR SED of HLIRG using radiative transfer models, and we find strong evidence that all HLIRG harbour an AGN. This work provides further support to the idea that AGN and SB are both crucial to understand the properties of HLIRG. Our study of the CF supports the hypothesis that HLIRG can be divided in two different populations.

Combination of CDF and D0 measurements of the W boson helicity in top quark decays

We report the combination of recent measurements of the helicity of the W boson from top quark decay by the CDF and D0 collaborations, based on data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.7 - 5.4 fb^-1 of ppbar collisions collected during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Combining measurements that simultaneously determine the fractions of W bosons with longitudinal (f0) and right-handed (f+) helicities, we find f0 = 0.722 \pm 0.081 [\pm 0.062 (stat.) \pm 0.052 (syst.)] and f+ = -0.033 \pm 0.046 [\pm 0.034 (stat.) \pm 0.031 (syst.)]. Combining measurements where one of the helicity fractions is fixed to the value expected in the standard model, we find f0 = 0.682 \pm 0.057 [\pm 0.035 (stat.) \pm 0.046 (syst.)] and f+ = -0.015\pm0.035 [\pm 0.018 (stat.) \pm 0.030 (syst.)]. The results are consistent with standard model expectations.

Combination of the top-quark mass measurements from the Tevatron collider

The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle, with a mass about 40 times larger than the mass of its isospin partner, the bottom quark. It decays almost 100% of the time to a $W$ boson and a bottom quark. Using top-antitop pairs at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider, the CDF and {\dzero} collaborations have measured the top quark's mass in different final states for integrated luminosities of up to 5.8 fb$^{-1}$. This paper reports on a combination of these measurements that results in a more precise value of the mass than any individual decay channel can provide. It describes the treatment of the systematic uncertainties and their correlations. The mass value determined is $173.18 \pm 0.56 \thinspace ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.75 \thinspace ({\rm syst})$ GeV or $173.18 \pm 0.94$ GeV, which has a precision of $\pm 0.54%$, making this the most precise determination of the top quark mass.

Measurement of Bs0 --> Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- Branching Ratios

The decays Bs0 --> Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- are reconstructed in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.8 fb-1 collected by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron p\bar{p} collider. All decay modes are observed with a significance of more than 10 sigma, and we measure the Bs0 production rate times Bs0 --> Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- branching ratios relative to the normalization mode B0 --> Ds+ D- to be $0.183 \pm 0.021 \pm 0.017$ for Bs0 --> Ds+ Ds-, $0.424 \pm 0.046 \pm 0.035$ for Bs0 --> Ds*+- Ds-+, $0.654 \pm 0.072 \pm 0.065$ for Bs0 --> Ds*+ Ds*-, and $1.261 \pm 0.095 \pm 0.112$ for the inclusive decay Bs0 --> Ds(*)+ Ds(*)-, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. These results are the most precise single measurements to date and provide important constraints for indirect searches for non-standard model physics in Bs0 mixing.

Measurement of CP-violation asymmetries in D0 to Ks pi+ pi-

We report a measurement of time-integrated CP-violation asymmetries in the resonant substructure of the three-body decay D0 to Ks pi+ pi- using CDF II data corresponding to 6.0 invfb of integrated luminosity from Tevatron ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The charm mesons used in this analysis come from D*+(2010) to D0 pi+ and D*-(2010) to D0bar pi-, where the production flavor of the charm meson is determined by the charge of the accompanying pion. We apply a Dalitz-amplitude analysis for the description of the dynamic decay structure and use two complementary approaches, namely a full Dalitz-plot fit employing the isobar model for the contributing resonances and a model-independent bin-by-bin comparison of the D0 and D0bar Dalitz plots. We find no CP-violation effects and measure an asymmetry of ACP = (-0.05 +- 0.57 (stat) +- 0.54 (syst))% for the overall integrated CP-violation asymmetry, consistent with the standard model prediction.

Measurement of the $WZ$ Cross Section and Triple Gauge Couplings in $p \bar p$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV

This Letter describes the current most precise measurement of the $WZ$ production cross section as well as limits on anomalous $WWZ$ couplings at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV in proton-antiproton collisions for the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). $WZ$ candidates are reconstructed from decays containing three charged leptons and missing energy from a neutrino, where the charged leptons are either electrons or muons. Using data collected by the CDF II detector (7.1 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity), 63 candidate events are observed with the expected background contributing $8 \pm 1$ events. The measured total cross section $σ(p \bar p \to WZ) = 3.93_{-0.53}^{+0.60}(\text{stat})_{-0.46}^{+0.59}(\text{syst}) $ pb is in good agreement with the standard model prediction of $3.50\pm 0.21$. Search for Standard Model Higgs Boson Production in Association with a W Boson Using a Matrix Element Technique at CDF in p-bar{p} Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV

This paper presents a search for standard model Higgs boson production in association with a $W$ boson using events recorded by the CDF experiment in a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb-1. The observed limits range from 3.5 to 37.6 relative to the standard model expectation for Higgs boson masses between 100 and 150 GeV. Search for the Higgs boson in the all-hadronic final state using the full CDF data set

This paper reports the result of a search for the standard model Higgs boson in events containing four reconstructed jets associated with quarks. For masses below 135GeV/c2, Higgs boson decays to bottom-antibottom quark pairs are dominant and result primarily in two hadronic jets. An additional two jets can be produced in the hadronic decay of a W or Z boson produced in association with the Higgs boson, or from the incoming quarks that produced the Higgs boson through the vector-boson fusion process. The search is performed using a sample of \sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb-1 recorded by the CDF II detector. The data are in agreement with the background model and 95% credibility level upper limits on Higgs boson production are set as a function of the Higgs boson mass. Search for WZ+ZZ production with MET + jets with b enhancement at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

Diboson production ($WW+WZ+ZZ$) has been observed at the Tevatron in hadronic decay modes dominated by the $WW$ process. This paper describes the measurement of the cross section of $WZ$ and $ZZ$ events in final states with large $\mett$ and using $b$-jet identification as a tool to suppress $WW$ contributions. Due to the limited energy resolution, we cannot distinguish between partially hadronic decays of $WZ$ and $ZZ$, and we measure the sum of these processes. The number of signal events is extracted using a simultaneous fit to the invariant mass distribution of the two jets for events with two $b$-jet candidates and events without two $b$-jet candidates. A Layer Correlation technique for pion energy calibration at the 2004 ATLAS Combined Beam Test

A new method for calibrating the hadron response of a segmented calorimeter is developed and successfully applied to beam test data. It is based on a principal component analysis of energy deposits in the calorimeter layers, exploiting longitudinal shower development information to improve the measured energy resolution. Corrections for invisible hadronic energy and energy lost in dead material in front of and between the calorimeters of the ATLAS experiment were calculated with simulated Geant4 Monte Carlo events and used to reconstruct the energy of pions impinging on the calorimeters during the 2004 Barrel Combined Beam Test at the CERN H8 area. Measurement of the top-quark mass in the lepton+jets channel using a matrix element technique with the CDF II detector

A measurement of the top-quark mass is presented using Tevatron data from proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV collected with the CDF II detector. Events are selected from a sample of candidates for production of $t\bar t$ pairs that decay into the lepton+jets channel. The top-quark mass is measured with an unbinned maximum likelihood method where the event probability density functions are calculated using signal and background matrix elements, as well as a set of parameterized jet-to-parton transfer functions. The likelihood function is maximized with respect to the top-quark mass, the signal fraction in the sample, and a correction to the jet energy scale (JES) calibration of the calorimeter jets. The simultaneous measurement of the JES correction ($\JES$) amounts to an additional \textit{in situ} jet energy calibration based on the known mass of the hadronically decaying $W$ boson. Using the data sample of 578 lepton+jets candidate events, corresponding to 3.2 $fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, the top-quark mass is measured to be $m_t = \rm 172.4 \pm 1.4\:(stat+\JES) \pm 1.3\:(syst) GeV/{\it c}^2$.

Measurement of ZZ production in leptonic final states at {\surd}s of 1.96 TeV at CDF

In this paper we present a precise measurement of the total ZZ production cross section in pp collisions at {\surd}s= 1.96 TeV, using data collected with the CDF II detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 6 fb-1. The result is obtained by combining separate measurements in the four-charged (lll'l'), and two-charged-lepton and two-neutral-lepton (llvv) decay modes of the Z. The combined measured cross section for pp {\to} ZZ is 1.64^(+0.44)_(-0.38) pb. This is the most precise measurement of the ZZ production cross section in 1.96 TeV pp collisions to date.

Probabilistic Inference from Arbitrary Uncertainty using Mixtures of Factorized Generalized Gaussians

This paper presents a general and efficient framework for probabilistic inference and learning from arbitrary uncertain information. It exploits the calculation properties of finite mixture models, conjugate families and factorization. Both the joint probability density of the variables and the likelihood function of the (objective or subjective) observation are approximated by a special mixture model, in such a way that any desired conditional distribution can be directly obtained without numerical integration. We have developed an extended version of the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm to estimate the parameters of mixture models from uncertain training examples (indirect observations). As a consequence, any piece of exact or uncertain information about both input and output values is consistently handled in the inference and learning stages. This ability, extremely useful in certain situations, is not found in most alternative methods. The proposed framework is formally justified from standard probabilistic principles and illustrative examples are provided in the fields of nonparametric pattern classification, nonlinear regression and pattern completion. Finally, experiments on a real application and comparative results over standard databases provide empirical evidence of the utility of the method in a wide range of applications.

Search for a Heavy Top-Like Quark in p\bar{p} Collisions at {\surd}s = 1.96 TeV

We present the results of a search for pair production of a heavy top-like (t') quark decaying to Wq final states using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb-1 collected by the CDF II detector in pp collisions at {\surd}s = 1.96 TeV. We perform parallel searches for t' \to Wb and t' \to Wq (where q is a generic down-type quark) in events containing a lepton and four or more jets. By performing a fit to the two-dimensional distribution of total transverse energy versus reconstructed t quark mass, we set upper limits on the t \bar{t} production cross section and exclude a standard model fourth-generation t' quark decaying to W b (W q) with mass below 358 (340) GeV/c2 at 95% CL.

Search for a Higgs Boson in the Diphoton Final State in p-pbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

A search for a narrow Higgs boson resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented based on data corresponding to 7.0 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity from p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF experiment. No evidence of such a resonance is observed, and upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio of the resonant state as a function of Higgs boson mass. The limits are interpreted in the context of the standard model and one fermiophobic benchmark model where the data exclude fermiophobic Higgs bosons with masses below 114 GeV/c^2 at a 95% Bayesian credibility level.

Search for high-mass resonances decaying into ZZ in p$\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$\,TeV

We search for high-mass resonances decaying into Z boson pairs using data corresponding to 6 fb^-1 collected by the CDF experiment in p\bar{p} collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. The search is performed in three distinct final states: ZZ --> l^+l^-l^+l^-, ZZ --> l^+l^-νν, and ZZ --> l^+l^-jj. For a Randall-Sundrum graviton G*, the 95% CL upper limits on the production cross section times branching ratio to ZZ, sigma(p\bar{p} --> G^* --> ZZ), vary between 0.26 pb and 0.045 pb in the mass range 300 < M_{G*} < 1000 GeV/c^2.

Search for New Dielectron Resonances and Randall-Sundrum Gravitons at the Collider Detector at Fermilab

A search for new dielectron mass resonances using data recorded by the CDF II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.7/fb is presented. No significant excess over the expected standard model prediction is observed. In this dataset, an event with the highest dielectron mass ever observed (960 GeV/c^2) was recorded. The results are interpreted in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model. Combined with the 5.4/fb diphoton analysis, the RS-graviton lower mass limit for the coupling k/\bar{M}_{Pl}=0.1 is 1058 GeV/c^2, making it the strongest limit to date.

Search for Standard Model Higgs Boson Production in Association with a W Boson at CDF

We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson production in association with a $W$ boson in proton-antiproton collisions ($p\bar{p}\rightarrow W^\pm H \rightarrow \ellνb\bar{b}$) at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The search employs data collected with the CDF II detector which correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 2.7 fb$^{-1}$. We recorded this data with two kinds of triggers. The first kind required high-p$_T$ charged leptons and the second required both missing transverse energy and jets. The search selects events consistent with a signature of a single lepton ($e^\pm/μ^\pm$), missing transverse energy, and two jets. Jets corresponding to bottom quarks are identified with a secondary vertex tagging method and a jet probability tagging method. Kinematic information is fed in an artificial neural network to improve discrimination between signal and background. The search finds that both the observed number of events and the neural network output distributions are consistent with the standard model background expectations, and sets 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross section times branching ratio. The limits are expressed as a ratio to the standard model production rate. The limits range from 3.6 (4.3 expected) to 61.1 (43.2 expected) for Higgs masses from 100 to 150 GeV/$c^{2}$, respectively.

Spectral Energy Distribution of Hyper-Luminous Infrared Galaxies

The relationship between star formation and super-massive black hole growth is central to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. Hyper-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (HLIRGs) are unique laboratories to investigate the connection between starburst (SB) and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), since they exhibit extreme star formation rates, and most of them show evidence of harbouring powerful AGN. Our previous X-ray study of a sample of 14 HLIRGs shows that the X-ray emission of most HLIRGs is dominated by AGN activity. To improve our estimate of the relative contribution of the AGN and SB emission to its total bolometric output, we have built broad band spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for these HLIRGs, and we have fitted empirical AGN and SB templates to these SEDs. In broad terms, most sources are well fitted using this method, and we found AGN and SB contributions similar to those obtained by previous studies of HLIRGs. We have classified the HLIRGs SEDs in two groups, named class A and class B. Class A HLIRGs show a flat SED from the optical to the infrared energy range. Three out of seven class A sources can be modelled with a pure luminosity-dependent QSO template, while the rest of them require a type 1 AGN template and a SB template. The SB component is dominant in three out of four class A objects. Class B HLIRGs show SEDs with a prominent and broad IR bump. These sources can not trivially be modelled with a combination of pure AGN and pure SB, they require templates of composite objects, suggesting that >50% of their emission comes from stellar formation processes. We propose that our sample is actually composed by three different populations: very luminous QSO, young galaxies going through their maximal star formation period and the high luminosity tail of ULIRG population distribution.

Studying the Underlying Event in Drell-Yan and High Transverse Momentum Jet Production at the Tevatron

We study the underlying event in proton-antiproton collisions by examining the behavior of charged particles (transverse momentum pT > 0.5 GeV/c, pseudorapidity |η| < 1) produced in association with large transverse momentum jets (~2.2 fb-1) or with Drell-Yan lepton-pairs (~2.7 fb-1) in the Z-boson mass region (70 < M(pair) < 110 GeV/c2) as measured by CDF at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. We use the direction of the lepton-pair (in Drell-Yan production) or the leading jet (in high-pT jet production) in each event to define three regions of η-ϕspace; toward, away, and transverse, where ϕis the azimuthal scattering angle. For Drell-Yan production (excluding the leptons) both the toward and transverse regions are very sensitive to the underlying event. In high-pT jet production the transverse region is very sensitive to the underlying event and is separated into a MAX and MIN transverse region, which helps separate the hard component (initial and final-state radiation) from the beam-beam remnant and multiple parton interaction components of the scattering. The data are corrected to the particle level to remove detector effects and are then compared with several QCD Monte-Carlo models. The goal of this analysis is to provide data that can be used to test and improve the QCD Monte-Carlo models of the underlying event that are used to simulate hadron-hadron collisions.

Search for First-Generation Scalar Leptoquarks in $\bm{p \bar{p}}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV

We report on a search for pair production of first-generation scalar leptoquarks ($LQ$) in $p \bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 203 $pb^{-1}$ collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider by the CDF experiment. We observe no evidence for $LQ$ production in the topologies arising from $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eqeq$ and $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eq νq$, and derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the $LQ$ production cross section. %as a function of $β$, where $β$ is the branching fraction for $LQ \to eq$. The results are combined with those obtained from a separately reported CDF search in the topology arising from $LQ\bar{LQ} \to νq νq$ and 95% C.L. lower limits on the LQ mass as a function of $β= BR(LQ \to eq) $ are derived. The limits are 236, 205 and 145 GeV/c$^2$ for $β$ = 1, $β$ = 0.5 and $β$ = 0.1, respectively.

A Theoretical Model for Mars Crater-Size Frequency Distribution

We present a theoretical and analytical curve with reproduce essential features of the frequency distributions vs. diameter, of the 42,000 crater contained in the Barlow Mars Catalog. The model is derived using reasonable simple assumptions that allow us to relate the present craters population with the craters population at each particular epoch. The model takes into consideration the reduction of the number of craters as a function of time caused by their erosion and obliteration, and this provides a simple and natural explanation for the presence of different slopes in the empirical log-log plot of number of craters (N) vs. diameter (D).

Comparison of Three-jet Events in Proton-Antiproton Collisions at Center-of-mass Energy 1.8 TeV to Predictions from a Next-to-leading Order QCD Calculation

The properties of three-jet events with total transverse energy greater than 320 GeV and individual jet energy greater than 20 GeV have been analyzed and compared to absolute predictions from a next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculation. These data, of integrated luminosity 86 pb^-1, were recorded by the CDF Experiment for proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV. This study tests a model of higher order QCD processes that result in gluon emission and can be used to estimate the magnitude of the contribution of processes higher than NLO. The total cross section is measured to be 466 +/- 3(stat.)^{+207}_{-70}(syst.) pb. The differential cross section is furthermore measured for all kinematically accessible regions of the Dalitz plane, including those for which the theoretical prediction is unreliable. While the measured cross section is consistent with the theoretical prediction in magnitude, the two differ somewhat in shape in the Dalitz plane.
