Novel observation of isospin structure of short-range correlations in calcium isotopes

Short Range Correlations (SRCs) have been identified as being responsible for the high momentum tail of the nucleon momentum distribution, n(k). Hard, short-range interactions of nucleon pairs generate the high momentum tail and imprint a universal character on n(k) for all nuclei at large momentum. Triple coincidence experiments have shown a strong dominance of np pairs, but these measurements involve large final state interactions. This paper presents the results from Jefferson Lab experiment E08014 which measured inclusive electron scattering cross-section from Ca isotopes. By comparing the inclusive cross section from 48Ca to 40Ca in a kinematic region dominated by SRCs we provide a new way to study the isospin structure of SRCs.

A high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity with a frequency-doubled green laser for precision Compton polarimetry at Jefferson Lab

A high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity with a frequency-doubled continuous wave green laser (532~nm) has been built and installed in Hall A of Jefferson Lab for high precision Compton polarimetry. The infrared (1064~nm) beam from a ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier seeded by a Nd:YAG nonplanar ring oscillator laser is frequency doubled in a single-pass periodically poled MgO:LiNbO3_{3} crystal. The maximum achieved green power at 5 W IR pump power is 1.74 W with a total conversion efficiency of 34.8\%. The green beam is injected into the optical resonant cavity and enhanced up to 3.7~kW with a corresponding enhancement of 3800. The polarization transfer function has been measured in order to determine the intra-cavity circular laser polarization within a measurement uncertainty of 0.7\%. The PREx experiment at Jefferson Lab used this system for the first time and achieved 1.0\% precision in polarization measurements of an electron beam with energy and current of 1.0~GeV and 50~μμA.

Measurements of d2nd_{2}^{n} and A1nA_{1}^{n}: Probing the neutron spin structure

We report on the results of the E06-014 experiment performed at Jefferson Lab in Hall A, where a precision measurement of the twist-3 matrix element d2d_2 of the neutron (d2nd_{2}^{n}) was conducted. This quantity represents the average color Lorentz force a struck quark experiences in a deep inelastic electron scattering event off a neutron due to its interaction with the hadronizing remnants. This color force was determined from a linear combination of the third moments of the spin structure functions g1g_1 and g2g_2 on 3^{3}He after nuclear corrections had been applied to these moments. The kinematics included two average Q2Q^{2} bins of 3.23.2 GeV2^{2} and 4.34.3 GeV2^{2}, and Bjorken-xx 0.25≤x≤0.900.25 \leq x \leq 0.90 covering the DIS and resonance regions. We found d2nd_2^n to be small and negative for <Q2>=3.2<Q^{2}> = 3.2 GeV2^{2}, and smaller for <Q2>=4.3<Q^{2}> = 4.3 GeV2^{2}, consistent with a lattice QCD calculation. The twist-4 matrix element f2nf_{2}^{n} was extracted by combining our d2nd_{2}^{n} with the world data on Γ1n=∫01g1ndxΓ_{1}^{n} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{n} dx. We found f2nf_{2}^{n} to be roughly an order of magnitude larger than d2nd_{2}^{n}. Utilizing the extracted d2nd_{2}^{n} and f2nf_{2}^{n} data, we separated the color force into its electric and magnetic components, FEy,nF_{E}^{y,n} and FBy,nF_{B}^{y,n}, and found them to be equal and opposite in magnitude, in agreement with instanton model predictions but not with those from QCD sum rules. Additionally, we have extracted the neutron virtual photon-nucleon asymmetry A1nA_{1}^{n}, the structure function ratio g1n/F1ng_{1}^{n}/F_{1}^{n}, and the quark ratios (Δu+Δuˉ)/(u+uˉ)(Δu + Δ\bar{u})/(u + \bar{u}) and (Δd+Δdˉ)/(d+dˉ)(Δd + Δ\bar{d})/(d + \bar{d}). These results were found to be consistent with DIS world data and with the prediction of the constituent quark model but at odds with those of perturbative QCD at large xx.

Rosenbluth separation of the π0π^0 electroproduction cross section

We present deeply virtual π0π^0 electroproduction cross-section measurements at xBx_B=0.36 and three different Q2Q^2--values ranging from 1.5 to 2 GeV2^2, obtained from experiment E07-007 that ran in the Hall A at Jefferson Lab. The Rosenbluth technique was used to separate the longitudinal and transverse responses. Results demonstrate that the cross section is dominated by its transverse component, and thus is far from the asymptotic limit predicted by perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. An indication of a non-zero longitudinal contribution is provided by the interference term σLTσ_{LT} also measured. Results are compared with several models based on the leading twist approach of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, a fair agreement is obtained with models where the scattering amplitude is described by a convolution of chiral-odd (transversity) GPDs of the nucleon with the twist-3 pion distribution amplitude. Therefore, neutral pion electroproduction may offer the exciting possibility of accessing transversity GPDs through experiment.

A precision measurement of the pp(e,e′p e,e^\prime p\,)π0π^0 reaction at threshold

New results are reported from a measurement of π0π^0 electroproduction near threshold using the p(e,e′p)π0p(e,e^{\prime} p)π^0 reaction. The experiment was designed to determine precisely the energy dependence of s−s- and p−p-wave electromagnetic multipoles as a stringent test of the predictions of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT). The data were taken with an electron beam energy of 1192 MeV using a two-spectrometer setup in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. For the first time, complete coverage of the ϕπ∗ϕ^*_π and θπ∗θ^*_π angles in the pπ0p π^0 center-of-mass was obtained for invariant energies above threshold from 0.5 MeV up to 15 MeV. The 4-momentum transfer Q2Q^2 coverage ranges from 0.05 to 0.155 (GeV/c)2^2 in fine steps. A simple phenomenological analysis of our data shows strong disagreement with p−p-wave predictions from ChPT for Q2>0.07Q^2>0.07 (GeV/c)2^2, while the s−s-wave predictions are in reasonable agreement.

Double Spin Asymmetries of Inclusive Hadron Electroproductions from a Transversely Polarized 3He^3\rm{He} Target

We report the measurement of beam-target double-spin asymmetries (ALTA_\text{LT}) in the inclusive production of identified hadrons, e⃗ \vec{e}~+ 3He↑→h+X~^3\text{He}^{\uparrow}\rightarrow h+X, using a longitudinally polarized 5.9 GeV electron beam and a transversely polarized 3He^3\rm{He} target. Hadrons (π±π^{\pm}, K±K^{\pm} and proton) were detected at 16∘^{\circ} with an average momentum <<PhP_h>>=2.35 GeV/c and a transverse momentum (pTp_{T}) coverage from 0.60 to 0.68 GeV/c. Asymmetries from the 3He^3\text{He} target were observed to be non-zero for π±π^{\pm} production when the target was polarized transversely in the horizontal plane. The π+π^{+} and π−π^{-} asymmetries have opposite signs, analogous to the behavior of ALTA_\text{LT} in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering.

A Precision Measurement of the Neutron Twist-3 Matrix Element d2nd_2^n: Probing Color Forces

Double-spin asymmetries and absolute cross sections were measured at large Bjorken xx (0.25 ≤x≤ \le x \le 0.90), in both the deep-inelastic and resonance regions, by scattering longitudinally polarized electrons at beam energies of 4.7 and 5.9 GeV from a transversely and longitudinally polarized 3^3He target. In this dedicated experiment, the spin structure function g2g_2 on 3^3He was determined with precision at large xx, and the neutron twist-three matrix element d2nd_2^n was measured at <Q2>\left< Q^2\right> of 3.21 and 4.32 GeV2^2/c2c^2, with an absolute precision of about 10−510^{-5}. Our results are found to be in agreement with lattice QCD calculations and resolve the disagreement found with previous data at <Q2>=\left< Q^2\right> = 5 GeV2^2/c2c^2. Combining d2nd_2^n and a newly extracted twist-four matrix element, f2nf_2^n, the average neutron color electric and magnetic forces were extracted and found to be of opposite sign and about 30 MeV/fm in magnitude.

Measurement of Parity-Violating Asymmetry in Electron-Deuteron Inelastic Scattering

The parity-violating asymmetries between a longitudinally-polarized electron beam and an unpolarized deuterium target have been measured recently. The measurement covered two kinematic points in the deep inelastic scattering region and five in the nucleon resonance region. We provide here details of the experimental setup, data analysis, and results on all asymmetry measurements including parity-violating electron asymmetries and those of inclusive pion production and beam-normal asymmetries. The parity-violating deep-inelastic asymmetries were used to extract the electron-quark weak effective couplings, and the resonance asymmetries provided the first evidence for quark-hadron duality in electroweak observables. These electron asymmetries and their interpretation were published earlier, but are presented here in more detail.

Measurement of the Target-Normal Single-Spin Asymmetry in Deep-Inelastic Scattering from the Reaction 3He↑(e,e′)X^{3}\mathrm{He}^{\uparrow}(e,e')X

We report the first measurement of the target-normal single-spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic scattering from the inclusive reaction 3^3He↑(e,e′)X^{\uparrow}\left(e,e' \right)X on a polarized 3^3He gas target. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero in the Born approximation but can be non-zero if two-photon-exchange contributions are included. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.89 GeV electron beam, covers a range of 1.7<W<2.91.7 < W < 2.9 GeV, 1.0<Q2<4.01.0<Q^2<4.0 GeV2^2 and 0.16<x<0.650.16<x<0.65. Neutron asymmetries were extracted using the effective nucleon polarization and measured proton-to-3^3He cross section ratios. The measured neutron asymmetries are negative with an average value of (−1.09±0.38)×10−2(-1.09 \pm 0.38) \times10^{-2} for invariant mass W>2W>2 GeV, which is non-zero at the 2.89σ2.89σ level. Our measured asymmetry agrees both in sign and magnitude with a two-photon-exchange model prediction that uses input from the Sivers transverse momentum distribution obtained from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering.

Single Spin Asymmetries in Charged Kaon Production from Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering on a Transversely Polarized 3He^3{\rm{He}} Target

We report the first measurement of target single spin asymmetries of charged kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of electrons off a transversely polarized 3He^3{\rm{He}} target. Both the Collins and Sivers moments, which are related to the nucleon transversity and Sivers distributions, respectively, are extracted over the kinematic range of 0.1<<xbjx_{bj}<<0.4 for K+K^{+} and K−K^{-} production. While the Collins and Sivers moments for K+K^{+} are consistent with zero within the experimental uncertainties, both moments for K−K^{-} favor negative values. The Sivers moments are compared to the theoretical prediction from a phenomenological fit to the world data. While the K+K^{+} Sivers moments are consistent with the prediction, the K−K^{-} results differ from the prediction at the 2-sigma level.

Single Spin Asymmetries of Inclusive Hadrons Produced in Electron Scattering from a Transversely Polarized 3^3He Target

We report the first measurement of target single-spin asymmetries (AN_N) in the inclusive hadron production reaction, e e~+ 3He↑→h+X~^3\text{He}^{\uparrow}\rightarrow h+X, using a transversely polarized 3^3He target. The experiment was conducted at Jefferson Lab in Hall A using a 5.9-GeV electron beam. Three types of hadrons (π±π^{\pm}, K±\text{K}^{\pm} and proton) were detected in the transverse hadron momentum range 0.54 <pT<<p_T< 0.74 GeV/c. The range of xFx_F for pions was -0.29 <xF<<x_F< -0.23 and for kaons -0.25 <xF<<x_F<-0.18. The observed asymmetry strongly depends on the type of hadron. A positive asymmetry is observed for π+π^+ and K+\text{K}^+. A negative asymmetry is observed for π−π^{-}. The magnitudes of the asymmetries follow ∣Aπ−∣<∣Aπ+∣<∣AK+∣|A^{π^-}| < |A^{π^+}| < |A^{K^+}|. The K−^{-} and proton asymmetries are consistent with zero within the experimental uncertainties. The π+π^{+} and π−π^{-} asymmetries measured for the 3^3He target and extracted for neutrons are opposite in sign with a small increase observed as a function of pTp_T.

Weak charge form factor and radius of 208Pb through parity violation in electron scattering

We use distorted wave electron scattering calculations to extract the weak charge form factor F_W(q), the weak charge radius R_W, and the point neutron radius R_n, of 208Pb from the PREX parity violating asymmetry measurement. The form factor is the Fourier transform of the weak charge density at the average momentum transfer q=0.475 fm−1^{-1}. We find F_W(q) =0.204 \pm 0.028 (exp) \pm 0.001 (model). We use the Helm model to infer the weak radius from F_W(q). We find R_W= 5.826 \pm 0.181 (exp) \pm 0.027 (model) fm. Here the exp error includes PREX statistical and systematic errors, while the model error describes the uncertainty in R_W from uncertainties in the surface thickness σof the weak charge density. The weak radius is larger than the charge radius, implying a "weak charge skin" where the surface region is relatively enriched in weak charges compared to (electromagnetic) charges. We extract the point neutron radius R_n=5.751 \pm 0.175 (exp) \pm 0.026 (model) \pm 0.005 (strange) fm$, from R_W. Here there is only a very small error (strange) from possible strange quark contributions. We find R_n to be slightly smaller than R_W because of the nucleon's size. Finally, we find a neutron skin thickness of R_n-R_p=0.302\pm 0.175 (exp) \pm 0.026 (model) \pm 0.005 (strange) fm, where R_p is the point proton radius.

Measurement of pretzelosity asymmetry of charged pion production in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering on a polarized 3^3He target

An experiment to measure single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering on a transversely polarized 3^3He target was performed at Jefferson Lab in the kinematic region of 0.16<x<0.350.16<x<0.35 and 1.4<Q2<2.71.4<Q^2<2.7 GeV2{\rm GeV^2}. The pretzelosity asymmetries on 3^3He, which can be expressed as the convolution of the h1T⊥h^\perp_{1T} transverse momentum dependent distribution functions and the Collins fragmentation functions in the leading order, were measured for the first time. Using the effective polarization approximation, we extracted the corresponding neutron asymmetries from the measured 3^3He asymmetries and cross-section ratios between the proton and 3^3He. Our results show that for both π±π^{\pm} on 3^3He and on the neutron the pretzelosity asymmetries are consistent with zero within experimental uncertainties.

Measurement of the Parity-Violating Asymmetry in Electron-Deuteron Scattering in the Nucleon Resonance Region

We report on parity-violating asymmetries in the nucleon resonance region measured using 5−65 - 6 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons scattering off an unpolarized deuterium target. These results are the first parity-violating asymmetry data in the resonance region beyond the Δ(1232)Δ(1232), and provide a verification of quark-hadron duality in the nucleon electroweak γZγZ interference structure functions at the (10-15)% level. The results are of particular interest to models relevant for calculating the γZγZ box-diagram corrections to elastic parity-violating electron scattering measurements.

Measurement of the Neutron Radius of 208Pb Through Parity-Violation in Electron Scattering

We report the first measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry A_PV in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from 208Pb. A_PV is sensitive to the radius of the neutron distribution (Rn). The result A_PV = 0.656 \pm 0.060 (stat) \pm 0.014 (syst) ppm corresponds to a difference between the radii of the neutron and proton distributions Rn - Rp = 0.33 +0.16 -0.18 fm and provides the first electroweak observation of the neutron skin which is expected in a heavy, neutron-rich nucleus.

New Measurements of the Transverse Beam Asymmetry for Elastic Electron Scattering from Selected Nuclei

We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry AnA_n in the elastic scattering of 1-3 GeV transversely polarized electrons from 1^1H and for the first time from 4^4He, 12^{12}C, and 208^{208}Pb. For 1^1H, 4^4He and 12^{12}C, the measurements are in agreement with calculations that relate AnA_n to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange amplitude including inelastic intermediate states. Surprisingly, the 208^{208}Pb result is significantly smaller than the corresponding prediction using the same formalism. These results suggest that a systematic set of new AnA_n measurements might emerge as a new and sensitive probe of the structure of heavy nuclei.

High Precision Measurement of the Proton Elastic Form Factor Ratio μpGE/GMμ_pG_E/G_M at low Q2Q^2

We report a new, high-precision measurement of the proton elastic form factor ratio μ_p G_E/G_M for the four-momentum transfer squared Q^2 = 0.3-0.7 (GeV/c)^2. The measurement was performed at Jefferson Lab (JLab) in Hall A using recoil polarimetry. With a total uncertainty of approximately 1%, the new data clearly show that the deviation of the ratio μ_p G_E/G_M from unity observed in previous polarization measurements at high Q^2 continues down to the lowest Q^2 value of this measurement. The updated global fit that includes the new results yields an electric (magnetic) form factor roughly 2% smaller (1% larger) than the previous global fit in this Q^2 range. We obtain new extractions of the proton electric and magnetic radii, which are <r^2_E>^(1/2)=0.875+/-0.010 fm and <r^2_M>^(1/2)=0.867+/-0.020 fm. The charge radius is consistent with other recent extractions based on the electron-proton interaction, including the atomic hydrogen Lamb shift measurements, which suggests a missing correction in the comparison of measurements of the proton charge radius using electron probes and the recent extraction from the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift.

New Precision Limit on the Strange Vector Form Factors of the Proton

The parity-violating cross-section asymmetry in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from unpolarized protons has been measured at a four-momentum transfer squared Q2 = 0.624 GeV and beam energy E =3.48 GeV to be A_PV = -23.80 +/- 0.78 (stat) +/- 0.36 (syst) parts per million. This result is consistent with zero contribution of strange quarks to the combination of electric and magnetic form factors G_E^s + 0.517 G_M^s = 0.003 +/- 0.010 (stat) +/- 0.004 (syst) +/- 0.009 (ff), where the third error is due to the limits of precision on the electromagnetic form factors and radiative corrections. With this measurement, the world data on strange contributions to nucleon form factors are seen to be consistent with zero and not more than a few percent of the proton form factors.

Single Spin Asymmetries in Charged Pion Production from Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering on a Transversely Polarized 3^3He Target

We report the first measurement of target single spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive 3He(e,e′π±)X^3{He}(e,e'π^\pm)X reaction on a transversely polarized target. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.9 GeV electron beam, covers a range of 0.14 <x<< x < 0.34 with 1.3 <Q2<<Q^2< 2.7 GeV2^2. The Collins and Sivers moments were extracted from the azimuthal angular dependence of the measured asymmetries. The extracted π±π^\pm Collins moments for 3^3He are consistent with zero, except for the π+π^+ moment at x=0.34x=0.34, which deviates from zero by 2.3σσ. While the π−π^- Sivers moments are consistent with zero, the π+π^+ Sivers moments favor negative values. The neutron results were extracted using the nucleon effective polarization and the measured cross section ratio of proton to 3^3He, and are largely consistent with the predictions of phenomenological fits and quark model calculations.

Upgraded photon calorimeter with integrating readout for Hall A Compton Polarimeter at Jefferson Lab

The photon arm of the Compton polarimeter in Hall A of Jefferson Lab has been upgraded to allow for electron beam polarization measurements with better than 1% accuracy. The data acquisition system (DAQ) now includes an integrating mode, which eliminates several systematic uncertainties inherent in the original counting-DAQ setup. The photon calorimeter has been replaced with a Ce-doped GSO crystal, which has a bright output and fast response, and works well for measurements using the new integrating method at electron beam energies from 1 to 6 GeV.
