Non-linear interaction of laser light with vacuum: contributions to the energy density and pressure in presence of an intense magnetic field

Recent simulations show that very large electric and magnetic fields near the kilo Tesla strength will likely be generated by ultra-intense lasers at existing facilities over distances of hundreds of microns in underdense plasmas. Stronger ones are even expected in the future although some technical dificulties must be overcome. In addition, it has been shown that vacuum exhibits a peculiar non-linear behaviour in presence of high magnetic and electric field strengths. In this work we are interested in the analysis of thermodynamical contributions of vacuum to the energy density and pressure when radiation interacts with it in the presence of an external magnetic field. Using the Euler-Heisenberg formalism in the regime of weak fields i.e. smaller than critical Quantum Electrodynamics field strength values, we evaluate these magnitudes and analyze the highly anisotropic behaviour we find. Our work has implications for photon-photon scattering with lasers and astrophysically magnetized underdense systems far outside their surface where matter effects are increasingly negligible.

Modeling anisotropic magnetized strange quark stars

Compact objects have an intrinsic anisotropy due to the presence of strong magnetic fields that cause considerable modifications on the equations of state (EoS). In this work, we study the impact of this anisotropy in the size and shape of magnetized strange quark stars using an axially symmetric metric in spherical coordinates, the gamma-metric. The results are compared with those obtained with the standard Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations for the parallel and perpendicular pressures independently. Differences in the results are discussed.

The photon time delay in magnetized vacuum magnetosphere

We study the transverse propagation of photons in a magnetized vacuum considering radiative corrections in the one-loop approximation. The dispersion equation is modified due to the magnetized photon self-energy in the transparency region ($0<ω<2m_e$). The aim of our study is to explore propagation of photons in a neutron star magnetosphere (described by magnetized vacuum). The solution of the dispersion equation is obtained in terms of analytic functions. The larger the magnetic field, the lower the phase velocity and the more the dispersion curve deviates from the light-cone. For fixed values of the frequency, we study the dependence of photon time delay with the magnetic field strength, as well as with distance. For the latter, we adopt a magnetic dipole configuration and obtain that -- contrary to the expectation, according to the traditional time delay of photons in the interstellar medium -- photons of higher energy experience a longer time delay. A discussion of potential causes of this behaviour is presented.

Magnetized White Dwarfs

The purpose of this thesis is to obtain more realistic equations of state to describe the matter forming magnetized white dwarfs, and use them to solve its structure equations. The equations of state are determined by considering the weak magnetic field approximation $B<B_c$ ($B_c=4.41\times10^{13}\text{ G}$) for the electron gas of the star. The magnetic field introduces anisotropic pressures, even for the moderate values present in white dwarfs. Also, we consider the energy and pressure correction due to the Coulomb interaction of the electron gas with the ions located in a crystal lattice. Moreover, spherically symmetric Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff structure equations are solved independently for the perpendicular and parallel pressures, confirming the necessity of using axisymmetric structure equations, more adequate to describe the anisotropic system. Therefore, we study the solutions in cylindrical coordinates. In this case, the mass per longitude unit is obtained instead of the total mass of the white dwarf.

A non-perturbative study of the evolution of cosmic magnetised sources

We undertake a hydrodynamical study of a mixture of tightly coupled primordial radiation, neutrinos, baryons, electrons and positrons, together with a gas of already decoupled dark matter WIMPS and an already existing "frozen" magnetic field in the infinite conductivity regime. Considering this cosmic fluid as the source of a homogeneous but anisotropic Bianchi I model, we describe its interaction with the magnetic field by means of suitable equations of state that are appropriate for the particle species of the mixture between the end of the leptonic era and the beginning of the radiation-dominated epoch. Fulfilment of observational bounds on the magnetic field intensity yields a "near FLRW" (but strictly non-perturbative) evolution of the geometric, kinematic and thermodynamical variables. This evolution is roughly comparable to the weak field approximation in linear perturbations on a spatially flat FLRW background of sources in which the frozen magnetic fields are coherent over very large supra-horizon scales. Our approach and results may provide interesting guidelines in potential situations in which non-perturbative methods are required to study the interaction between magnetic fields and the cosmic fluid.

On propagation of photons in a magnetized medium

The aim of this work is to solve the dispersion relations near the first excitation threshold of photon propagating along the magnetic field in the strong field limit. We have calculated the time damping of the photon in two particular cases: the degenerate gas as well as the diluted gas limit being both important from the Astrophysical point of view. In particular the diluted gas limit could describe the magnethosphere of neutron stars. The solutions have been used to obtain a finite Quantum Faraday angle in both limits. A resonant behavior for the Faraday angle is also obtained. To reproduce the semi-classical result for the Faraday rotation angle the weak field limit is considered.

Anomalous-Magnetic-Moment Effects in a Strongly Magnetized and Dense Medium

We investigate the quantum corrections of the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) for fermions in the presence of a strong magnetic field using the Ritus's approach. At strong fields the particles get different AMM's depending on the LL's. This result is different from what is obtained with the Schwinger's approximation at weak field where the AMM is independent of the LL. We analyze the significance of the AMM contribution to the Equation of State (EoS) of the magnetized system, in the weak and strong field approximations.

2D massless QED Hall half-integer conductivity and graphene

Starting from the photon self-energy tensor in a magnetized medium, the 3D complete antisymmetric form of the conductivity tensor is found in the static limit of a fermion system $C$ non-invariant under fermion-antifermion exchange. The massless relativistic 2D fermion limit in QED is derived by using the compactification along the dimension parallel to the magnetic field. In the static limit and at zero temperature the main features of quantum Hall effect (QHE) are obtained: the half-integer QHE and the minimum value proportional to $e^2/h$ for the Hall conductivity . For typical values of graphene the plateaus of the Hall conductivity are also reproduced.

Magnetic field effects on some astrophysical properties of Quark Stars

This thesis aims to study how amending certain astrophysical observable of quark stars due to presence of magnetic field. To do this we need to obtain Equation of State (EOS) and consider the stability of Strange Quark Matter (made up of quarks u, d and s) cold dense and magnetized in stellar equilibrium (beta equilibrium, conservation of the baryonic number and charge neutrality). We will work using the phenomenological MIT Bag model. The stability of the Magnetized Strange Quark Matter (MSQM) is studied taking into account the variation of parameters from the model: s quark mass, baryonic density, magnetic field and the Bag parameter. Results obtained were compared with those of magnetized normal quark matter (only u and d quarks in beta equilibrium) as well as the Strange Quark Matter (SQM). It is found that the energy per baryon decreases with the increasing magnetic field which implies that the MSQM is more stable than SQM. The Equations of State previously obtained are used to obtain stable configurations of magnetized strange stars checking that the magnetic field helps to reduce Mass-Radius (M-R) ratio of the star.

Exploding Bose-Einstein condensates and collapsing neutron stars driven by critical magnetic fields

The problem of a condensate of a relativistic neutral vector boson gas constituted of particles bearing a magnetic moment is discussed. Such a vector boson system is expected to be formed either by parallel spin-pairing of neutrons in a sufficiently strong magnetic field, or by neutral atoms under specific conditions of magnetic field strength and density. A strong self-magnetization arises due to a Bose-Einstein-like condensation. Then the system, which may resemble the superfluid said to exist in the core of neutron stars, becomes more unstable under transverse collapse than the ordinary fermion gas. In the nonrelativistic limit of laboratory conditions, an analogy with the behavior of exploding Bose-Einstein condensates for critical values of magnetic field strength and particle density; reported by several authors, is briefly discussed.

Neutrinos in Strong Magnetic Fields

We compute the dispersion curves for neutrinos propagating in an extremely dense electroweak plasma, in the presence of very strong magnetic fields of order $B \le M_W^2/e$. The neutrino self-energy is calculated in the one-loop approximation. We consider only contributions of the first Landau level to the propagator of the W-bosons, and distinguish between motion parallel or perpendicular to the external magnetic field. We find that the neutrino dispersion curve for parallel propagation to the field suggests a superfluid behavior. An interesting analogy with fractional QHE is pointed out. We obtain a neutrino effective mass which increases with the magnetic field.
