Monte Carlo Simulations of the LARES space experiment to test General Relativity and fundamental physics

The LARES (LAser RElativity Satellite) satellite was successfully launched in February 2012. The LARES space experiment is based on the orbital determinations of the laser ranged satellites LARES, LAGEOS (LAser GEOdynamics Satellite) and LAGEOS 2 together with the determination of the Earth's gravity field by the GRACE (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) mission. It will test some fundamental physics predictions and provide accurate measurements of the framedragging effect predicted by Einstein's theory of General Relativity. By one hundred Monte Carlo simulations of the LARES experiment, with simulations of the orbits of LARES, LAGEOS and LAGEOS 2 according to the latest GRACE gravity field determinations, we found that the systematic errors in the measurement of framedragging amount to about 1.4% of the general relativistic effect, confirming previous error analyses.

Satellite probing General Relativity and its extensions and Kolmogorov analysis

We apply the Kolmogorov statistic to analyse the residual data of two LAGEOS satellites on General Relativistic Lense-Thirring effect, and show that it reveals a tiny difference in the properties of the satellites, possibly related to Yarkovsky-Rubincam effect. The recently launched LAser RElativity Satellite (LARES) can provide constraints to the extensions of General Relativity such as the Chern-Simons (CS) gravity with metric coupled to a scalar field through the Pontryagin density, so an explicit dependence on the frame dragging measurements vs the CS parameter is given.

The Earth's Frame Dragging via Laser Ranged Satellites: a Response to 'Some considerations on the present-day results for the detection of frame-dragging after the final outcome of GP-B' by L. Iorio [arXiv:1105.4145]

In this note, we reply to the preceding paper by Iorio: "Some considerations on the present-day results for the detection of frame-dragging after the final outcome of GP-B, Europhysics Letters", we address criticisms regarding the Lense-Thirring frame-dragging experiment results obtained from the laser ranging to the two LAGEOS satellites.

Study of gas purifiers for the CMS RPC detector

The CMS RPC muon detector utilizes a gas recirculation system called closed loop (CL) to cope with large gas mixture volumes and costs. A systematic study of CL gas purifiers has been carried out over 400 days between July 2008 and August 2009 at CERN in a low-radiation test area, with the use of RPC chambers with currents monitoring, and gas analysis sampling points. The study aimed to fully clarify the presence of pollutants, the chemistry of purifiers used in the CL, and the regeneration procedure. Preliminary results on contaminants release and purifier characterization are reported.

The CMS RPC gas gain monitoring system: an overview and preliminary results

The status of the CMS RPC Gas Gain Monitoring (GGM) system developed at the Frascati Laboratory of INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) is reported on. The GGM system is a cosmic ray telescope based on small RPC detectors operated with the same gas mixture used by the CMS RPC system. The GGM gain and efficiency are continuously monitored on-line, thus providing a fast and accurate determination of any shift in working point conditions. The construction details and the first result of GGM commissioning are described.
