Automorphic Lie algebras and modular forms

We introduce and study certain hyperbolic versions of automorphic Lie algebras related to the modular group. Let $Γ$ be a finite index subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ with an action on a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$, which can be extended to $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$. We show that the Lie algebra of the corresponding $\mathfrak{g}$-valued modular forms is isomorphic to the extension of $\mathfrak{g}$ over the usual modular forms. This establishes a modular analogue of a well-known result by Kac on twisted loop algebras. The case of principal congruence subgroups $Γ(N), \, N\leq 6$ are considered in more details in relation to the classical results of Klein and Fricke and the celebrated Markov Diophantine equation. We finish with a brief discussion of the extensions and representations of these Lie algebras.

Chaos and integrability in SL(2,R)-geometry

The integrability of the geodesic flow on the three-folds $\mathcal M^3$ admitting $SL(2,\mathbb R)$-geometry in Thurston's sense is investigated. The main examples are the quotients $\mathcal M^3_Γ=Γ\backslash PSL(2,\mathbb R)$, where $Γ\subset PSL(2,\mathbb R)$ is a cofinite Fuchsian group. We show that the corresponding phase space $T^*M_Γ^3$ contains two open regions with integrable and chaotic behaviour with zero and positive topological entropy respectively. As a concrete example we consider the case of modular 3-fold with the modular group $Γ=PSL({2,\mathbb Z})$, when $\mathcal M^3_Γ$ is known to be homeomorphic to the complement of a trefoil knot $\mathcal K$ in 3-sphere. Ghys proved a remarkable fact that the lifts of the periodic geodesics to the modular surface to $\mathcal M^3_Γ$ produce the same isotopy class of knots, which appeared in the chaotic version of the celebrated Lorenz system and were extensively studied by Birman and Williams. We show that in the integrable limit of the geodesic system on $\mathcal M^3_Γ$ they are replaced by the simple class of cable knots of trefoil.

Growth of values of binary quadratic forms and Conway rivers

We study the growth of the values of binary quadratic forms $Q$ on a binary planar tree as it was described by Conway. We show that the corresponding Lyapunov exponents $Λ_Q(x)$ as a function of the path determined by $x\in \mathbb RP^1$ are twice the values of the corresponding exponents for the growth of Markov numbers \cite{SV}, except for the paths corresponding to the Conway rivers, when $Λ_Q(x)=0.$ The relation with Galois results about continued fraction expansions for quadratic irrationals is explained and interpreted geometrically.

Lyapunov spectrum of Markov and Euclid trees

We study the Lyapunov exponents $Λ(x)$ for Markov dynamics as a function of path determined by $x\in \mathbb RP^1$ on a binary planar tree, describing the Markov triples and their "tropical" version - Euclid triples. We show that the corresponding Lyapunov spectrum is $[0, \ln φ]$, where $φ$ is the golden ratio, and prove that on the Markov-Hurwitz set $\mathbb{X}$ of the most irrational numbers the corresponding function $Λ_\mathbb{X}$ is monotonically increasing and in the Farey parametrization is convex.

Orbits and invariants of super Weyl groupoid

We study the orbits and polynomial invariants of certain affine action of the super Weyl groupoid of Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak {gl}(n,m)$, depending on a parameter. We show that for generic values of the parameter all the orbits are finite and separated by certain explicitly given invariants. We also describe explicitly the special set of parameters, for which the algebra of invariants is not finitely generated and does not separate the orbits, some of which are infinite.

Universal formula for Hilbert series of minimal nilpotent orbits

We show that the Hilbert series of the projective variety $X=P(O_{min}),$ corresponding to the minimal nilpotent orbit $\mathcal O_{min},$ is universal in the sense of Vogel: it is written uniformly for all simple Lie algebras in terms of Vogel's parameters $α,β,γ$ and represents a special case of the generalized hypergeometric function ${}_{4}F_{3}.$ A universal formula for the degree of $X$ is then deduced.

Symmetric Lie superalgebras and deformed quantum Calogero-Moser problems

The representation theory of symmetric Lie superalgebras and corresponding spherical functions are studied in relation with the theory of the deformed quantum Calogero-Moser systems. In the special case of symmetric pair g=gl(n,2m), k=osp(n,2m) we establish a natural bijection between projective covers of spherically typical irreducible g-modules and the finite dimensional generalised eigenspaces of the algebra of Calogero-Moser integrals D_{n,m} acting on the corresponding Laurent quasi-invariants A_{n,m}.

Burchnall-Chaundy polynomials and the Laurent phenomenon

The Burchnall-Chaundy polynomials $P_n(z)$ are determined by the differential recurrence relation $$P_{n+1}'(z)P_{n-1}(z)-P_{n+1}(z)P_{n-1}'(z)=P_n(z)^2$$ with $P_{-1}=P_0(z)=1.$ The fact that this recurrence relation has all solutions polynomial is not obvious and is similar to the integrality of Somos sequences and the Laurent phenomenon. We discuss this parallel in more detail and extend it to two difference equations $$Q_{n+1}(z+1)Q_{n-1}(z)-Q_{n+1}(z)Q_{n-1}(z+1)=Q_n(z)Q_n(z+1)$$ and $$R_{n+1}(z+1)R_{n-1}(z-1)-R_{n+1}(z-1)R_{n-1}(z+1)=R^2_n(z)$$ related to two different KdV-type reductions of the Hirota-Miwa and Dodgson octahedral equations. As a corollary we have a new form of the Burchnall-Chaundy polynomials in terms of the initial data $P_n(0)$, which is shown to be Laurent.

In search for a perfect shape of polyhedra: Buffon transformation

For an arbitrary polygon consider a new one by joining the centres of consecutive edges. Iteration of this procedure leads to a shape which is affine equivalent to a regular polygon. This regularisation effect is usually ascribed to Count Buffon (1707-1788). We discuss a natural analogue of this procedure for 3-dimensional polyhedra, which leads to a new notion of affine $B$-regular polyhedra. The main result is the proof of existence of star-shaped affine $B$-regular polyhedra with prescribed combinatorial structure, under partial symmetry and simpliciality assumptions. The proof is based on deep results from spectral graph theory due to Colin de Verdiere and Lovasz.

Jack-Laurent symmetric functions for special values of parameters

We consider the Jack--Laurent symmetric functions for special values of parameters p_0=n+k^{-1}m, where k is not rational and m and n are natural numbers. In general, the coefficients of such functions may have poles at these values of p_0. The action of the corresponding algebra of quantum Calogero-Moser integrals D(k,p_0) on the space of Laurent symmetric functions defines the decomposition into generalised eigenspaces. We construct a basis in each generalised eigenspace as certain linear combinations of the Jack--Laurent symmetric functions, which are regular at p_0=n+k^{-1}m, and describe the action of D(k,p_0) in these eigenspaces.

On deformation and classification of V-systems

The V-systems are special finite sets of covectors which appeared in the theory of the generalized Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde (WDVV) equations. Several families of V-systems are known but their classification is an open problem. We derive the relations describing the infinitesimal deformations of V-systems and use them to study the classification problem for V-systems in dimension 3. We discuss also possible matroidal structures of V-systems in relation with projective geometry and give the catalogue of all known irreducible rank 3 V-systems.

Baker-Akhiezer functions and generalised Macdonald-Mehta integrals

For the rational Baker-Akhiezer functions associated with special arrangements of hyperplanes with multiplicities we establish an integral identity, which may be viewed as a generalisation of the self-duality property of the usual Gaussian function with respect to the Fourier transformation. We show that the value of properly normalised Baker-Akhiezer function at the origin can be given by an integral of Macdonald-Mehta type and explicitly compute these integrals for all known Baker-Akhiezer arrangements. We use the Dotsenko-Fateev integrals to extend this calculation to all deformed root systems, related to the non-exceptional basic classical Lie superalgebras.

Cauchy problem for integrable discrete equations on quad-graphs

Initial value problems for the integrable discrete equations on quad-graphs are investigated. A geometric criterion of the well-posedness of such a problem is found. The effects of the interaction of the solutions with the localized defects in the regular square lattice are discussed for the discrete potential KdV and linear wave equations. The examples of kinks and solitons on various quad-graphs, including quasiperiodic tilings, are presented.

Zeroes of Wronskians of Hermite polynomials and Young diagrams

For a certain class of partitions, a simple qualitative relation is observed between the shape of the Young diagram and the pattern of zeroes of the Wronskian of the corresponding Hermite polynomials. In the case of two-term Wronskian $W(H_n, H_{n+k})$ we give an explicit formula for the asymptotic shape of the zero set as $n \rightarrow \infty$. Some empirical asymptotic formulas are given for the zero sets of three and four-term Wronskians.

Whittaker-Hill equation and semifinite-gap Schroedinger operators

A periodic one-dimensional Schroedinger operator is called semifinite-gap if every second gap in its spectrum is eventually closed. We construct explicit examples of semifinite-gap Schroedinger operators in trigonometric functions by applying Darboux transformations to the Whittaker-Hill equation. We give a criterion of the regularity of the corresponding potentials and investigate the spectral properties of the new operators.

On generalisations of Calogero-Moser-Sutherland quantum problem and WDVV equations

It is proved that if the Schrödinger equation $L ψ= λψ$ of Calogero-Moser-Sutherland type with $$L = -Δ+ \sum\limits_{α\in{\cal A}_{+}} \frac{m_α(m_α+1) (α,α)}{\sin^{2}(α,x)}$$ has a solution of the product form $ψ_0 = \prod_{α\in {\cal {A}_+}} \sin^{-m_α}(α,x),$ then the function $F(x) =\sum\limits_{α\in \cal {A}_{+}} m_α (α,x)^2 {\rm log} (α,x)^2$ satisfies the generalised WDVV equations.

On the real zeroes of the Hurwitz zeta-function and Bernoulli polynomials

The behaviour of real zeroes of the Hurwitz zeta function $$ζ(s,a)=\sum_{r=0}^{\infty}(a+r)^{-s}\qquad\qquad a > 0$$ is investigated. It is shown that $ζ(s,a)$ has no real zeroes $(s=σ,a)$ in the region $a >\frac{-σ}{2πe}+\frac{1}{4πe}\log (-σ) +1$ for large negative $σ$. In the region $0 < a < \frac{-σ}{2πe}$ the zeroes are asymptotically located at the lines $σ+ 4a + 2m =0$ with integer $m$. If $N(p)$ is the number of real zeroes of $ζ(-p,a)$ with given $p$ then $$\lim_{p\to\infty}\frac{N(p)}{p}=\frac{1}{πe}.$$ As a corollary we have a simple proof of Inkeri's result that the number of real roots of the classical Bernoulli polynomials $B_n(x)$ for large $n$ is asymptotically equal to $\frac{2n}{πe}$.

Multidimensional Baker-Akhiezer functions and Huygens' Principle

A notion of rational Baker-Akhiezer (BA) function related to a configuration of hyperplanes in C^n is introduced. It is proved that BA function exists only for very special configurations (locus configurations), which satisfy certain overdetermined algebraic system. The BA functions satisfy some algebraically integrable Schrodinger equations, so any locus configuration determines such an equation. Some results towards the classification of all locus configurations are presented. This theory is applied to the famous Hadamard's problem of description of all hyperbolic equations satisfying Huygens' Principle. We show that in a certain class all such equations are related to locus configurations and the corresponding fundamental solutions can be constructed explicitly from the BA functions.
