Multi-photon regime of non-linear Breit-Wheeler and Compton processes in short linearly and circularly polarized laser pulses

Non-linear Breit-Wheeler e+e−e^+e^- pair production and its crossing channel - the non-linear Compton process - in the multi-photon regime are analyzed for linearly and circularly polarized short laser pulses. The contribution of multi-photon processes to total cross sections is determined and we also show that (i) the azimuthal angular distributions of outgoing electrons in these processes differ on a qualitative level, and (ii) they depend on the polarization properties of the pulses. A finite carrier envelope phase (CEP) leads to a non-trivial non-monotonic behavior of the azimuthal angle distributions of the considered processes. That effect can be used for the CEP determination.

A model-independent confirmation of the Z(4430)−Z(4430)^- state

The decay B0→ψ(2S)K+π−B^0\to ψ(2S) K^+π^- is analyzed using 3 fb−1\rm 3~fb^{-1} of pppp collision data collected with the LHCb detector. A model-independent description of the ψ(2S)πψ(2S) π mass spectrum is obtained, using as input the KπKπ mass spectrum and angular distribution derived directly from data, without requiring a theoretical description of resonance shapes or their interference. The hypothesis that the ψ(2S)πψ(2S)π mass spectrum can be described in terms of KπKπ reflections alone is rejected with more than 8σσ significance. This provides confirmation, in a model-independent way, of the need for an additional resonant component in the mass region of the Z(4430)−Z(4430)^- exotic state.

A new algorithm for identifying the flavour of Bs0B_s^0 mesons at LHCb

A new algorithm for the determination of the initial flavour of Bs0B_s^0 mesons is presented. The algorithm is based on two neural networks and exploits the bb hadron production mechanism at a hadron collider. The first network is trained to select charged kaons produced in association with the Bs0B_s^0 meson. The second network combines the kaon charges to assign the Bs0B_s^0 flavour and estimates the probability of a wrong assignment. The algorithm is calibrated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energies. The calibration is performed in two ways: by resolving the Bs0B_s^0-Bˉs0\bar{B}_s^0 flavour oscillations in Bs0→Ds−π+B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+ decays, and by analysing flavour-specific Bs2∗(5840)0→B+K−B_{s 2}^{*}(5840)^0 \to B^+ K^- decays. The tagging power measured in Bs0→Ds−π+B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+ decays is found to be (1.80±0.19(stat)±0.18(syst))(1.80 \pm 0.19({\rm stat}) \pm 0.18({\rm syst}))\%, which is an improvement of about 50\% compared to a similar algorithm previously used in the LHCb experiment.

A precise measurement of the B0B^0 meson oscillation frequency

The oscillation frequency, ΔmdΔm_d, of B0B^0 mesons is measured using semileptonic decays with a D−D^- or D∗−D^{*-} meson in the final state, in a data sample of pppp collisions collected by the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0$\mbox{fb}^{-1}$. A combination of the two decay modes gives Δmd=(505.0±2.1±1.0) ns−1Δm_d = (505.0 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.0) \rm \,ns^{-1}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the most precise single measurement of this parameter. It is compatible with the current world average and has similar precision.

Amplitude analysis of B−→D+π−π−B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-} decays

The Dalitz plot analysis technique is used to study the resonant substructures of B−→D+π−π−B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-} decays in a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb−1{\rm fb}^{-1} of pppp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. A model-independent analysis of the angular moments demonstrates the presence of resonances with spins 1, 2 and 3 at high D+π−D^{+}π^{-} mass. The data are fitted with an amplitude model composed of a quasi-model-independent function to describe the D+π−D^{+}π^{-} S-wave together with virtual contributions from the D∗(2007)0D^{*}(2007)^{0} and B∗0B^{*0} states, and components corresponding to the D2∗(2460)0D^{*}_{2}(2460)^{0}, D1∗(2680)0D^{*}_{1}(2680)^{0}, D3∗(2760)0D^{*}_{3}(2760)^{0} and D2∗(3000)0D^{*}_{2}(3000)^{0} resonances. The masses and widths of these resonances are determined together with the branching fractions for their production in B−→D+π−π−B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-} decays. The D+π−D^{+}π^{-} S-wave has phase motion consistent with that expected due to the presence of the D0∗(2400)0D^{*}_{0}(2400)^{0} state. These results constitute the first observations of the D3∗(2760)0D^{*}_{3}(2760)^{0} and D2∗(3000)0D^{*}_{2}(3000)^{0} resonances.

Angular analysis of the B0→K∗0μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}μ^{+}μ^{-} decay using $3\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity

An angular analysis of the B0→K∗0(→K+π−)μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}(\rightarrow K^{+}π^{-})μ^{+}μ^{-} decay is presented. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,{\mbox{fb}^{-1}}$ of pppp collision data collected at the LHCb experiment. The complete angular information from the decay is used to determine C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables and C ⁣PC\!P asymmetries, taking account of possible contamination from decays with the K+π−K^{+}π^{-} system in an S-wave configuration. The angular observables and their correlations are reported in bins of q2q^2, the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system. The observables are determined both from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit and by using the principal moments of the angular distribution. In addition, by fitting for q2q^2-dependent decay amplitudes in the region 1.1<q2<6.0 GeV2/c41.1<q^{2}<6.0\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}^{2}/c^{4}, the zero-crossing points of several angular observables are computed. A global fit is performed to the complete set of C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables obtained from the maximum likelihood fit. This fit indicates differences with predictions based on the Standard Model at the level of 3.4 standard deviations. These differences could be explained by contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, or by an unexpectedly large hadronic effect that is not accounted for in the Standard Model predictions.

Constraints on the unitarity triangle angle γγ from Dalitz plot analysis of B0→DK+π−B^0 \to D K^+ π^- decays

The first study is presented of CP violation with an amplitude analysis of the Dalitz plot of B0→DK+π−B^0 \to D K^+ π^- decays, with D→K+π−D \to K^+ π^-, K+K−K^+ K^- and π+π−π^+ π^-. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb−13.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions collected with the LHCb detector. No significant CP violation effect is seen, and constraints are placed on the angle γγ of the unitarity triangle formed from elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. Hadronic parameters associated with the B0→DK∗(892)0B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0 decay are determined for the first time. These measurements can be used to improve the sensitivity to γγ of existing and future studies of the B0→DK∗(892)0B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0 decay.

Differential branching fraction and angular moments analysis of the decay B0→K+π−μ+μ−B^0 \to K^+ π^- μ^+ μ^- in the K0,2∗(1430)0K^*_{0,2}(1430)^0 region

Measurements of the differential branching fraction and angular moments of the decay B0→K+π−μ+μ−B^0 \to K^+ π^- μ^+ μ^- in the K+π−K^+π^- invariant mass range 1330<m(K+π−)<1530 MeV/c21330<m(K^+ π^-)<1530~MeV/c^2 are presented. Proton-proton collision data are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1fb^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. Differential branching fraction measurements are reported in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system, q2q^2, between 0.1 and 8.0 GeV2/c4GeV^2/c^4. For the first time, an angular analysis sensitive to the S-, P- and D-wave contributions of this rare decay is performed. The set of 40 normalised angular moments describing the decay is presented for the q2q^2 range 1.1--6.0 GeV2/c4GeV^2/c^4.

Evidence for exotic hadron contributions to Λb0→J/ψpπ−Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp π^- decays

A full amplitude analysis of Λb0→J/ψpπ−Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp π^- decays is performed with a data sample acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV pppp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}. A significantly better description of the data is achieved when, in addition to the previously observed nucleon excitations N→pπ−N\to pπ^-, either the Pc(4380)+P_c(4380)^+ and Pc(4450)+→J/ψpP_c(4450)^+\to J/ψp states, previously observed in Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp K^- decays, or the Zc(4200)−→J/ψπ−Z_c(4200)^-\to J/ψπ^- state, previously reported in B0→J/ψK+π−B^0 \to J/ψK^+ π^- decays, or all three, are included in the amplitude models. The data support a model containing all three exotic states, with a significance of more than three standard deviations. Within uncertainties, the data are consistent with the Pc(4380)+P_c(4380)^+ and Pc(4450)+P_c(4450)^+ production rates expected from their previous observation taking account of Cabibbo suppression.

The B−→D+K−π−B^{-}\to D^{+}K^{-}π^{-} decay is observed in a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb−13.0~\rm{fb}^{-1} of pppp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. Its branching fraction is measured to be B(B−→D+K−π−)=(7.31±0.19±0.22±0.39)×10−5{\cal B}(B^{-}\to D^{+}K^{-}π^{-}) = (7.31 \pm 0.19 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.39) \times 10^{-5} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the branching fraction of the normalisation channel B−→D+π−π−B^{-}\to D^{+}π^{-}π^{-}, respectively. An amplitude analysis of the resonant structure of the B−→D+K−π−B^{-}\to D^{+}K^{-}π^{-} decay is used to measure the contributions from quasi-two-body B−→D0∗(2400)0K−B^{-}\to D_{0}^{*}(2400)^{0}K^{-}, B−→D2∗(2460)0K−B^{-}\to D_{2}^{*}(2460)^{0}K^{-}, and B−→DJ∗(2760)0K−B^{-}\to D_{J}^{*}(2760)^{0}K^{-} decays, as well as from nonresonant sources. The DJ∗(2760)0D_{J}^{*}(2760)^{0} resonance is determined to have spin~1.

First observation of D0−Dˉ0D^0-\bar D^0 oscillations in D0→K+π−π+π−D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^- decays and measurement of the associated coherence parameters

Charm meson oscillations are observed in a time-dependent analysis of the ratio of D0→K+π−π+π−D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^- to D0→K−π+π−π+D^0\to K^-π^+π^-π^+ decay rates, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−13.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1} recorded by the LHCb experiment. The measurements presented are sensitive to the phase-space averaged ratio of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favoured amplitudes rDK3πr_{D}^{K3π} and the product of the coherence factor RDK3πR_{D}^{K3π} and a charm mixing parameter yK3π′y^{'}_{K3π}. The constraints measured are rDK3π=(5.67±0.12)×10−2r_{D}^{K3π}=(5.67 \pm 0.12)\times10^{-2}, which is the most precise determination to date, and RDK3π⋅yK3π′=(0.3±1.8)×10−3R_{D}^{K3π} \cdot y^{'}_{K3π} = (0.3 \pm 1.8)\times 10^{-3}, which provides useful input for determinations of the CP-violating phase γγ in B±→DK±,D→K∓π±π∓π±B^\pm \to D K^\pm, D \to K^\mpπ^\pmπ^\mpπ^\pm decays. The analysis also gives the most precise measurement of the D0→K+π−π+π−D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^- branching fraction, and the first observation of D0−Dˉ0D^0-\bar D^0 oscillations in this decay mode, with a significance of 8.2 standard deviations.

First observation of the decay Bs0→KS0K∗(892)0B_{s}^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} K^{*}(892)^{0}

A search for B(s)0→KS0K∗(892)0B_{(s)}^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} K^{*}(892)^{0} decays is performed using pppp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−11.0~\text{fb}^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV7~\text{TeV}. The Bs0→KS0K∗(892)0B_{s}^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} K^{*}(892)^{0} decay is observed for the first time, with a significance of 7.1 standard deviations. The branching fraction is measured to be \begin{equation*} \mathcal{B}(B_{s}^{0} \to \bar{K}^{0} K^{*}(892)^{0}) + \mathcal{B}(B_{s}^{0} \to K^{0} \bar{K}^{*}(892)^{0}) = (16.4 \pm 3.4 \pm 2.3) \times 10^{-6},\\ \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. A study of the decay D0→K−π+μ+μ−D^{0}\rightarrow K^{-}π^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-} is performed using data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb−1^{-1}. Decay candidates with muon pairs that have an invariant mass in the range 675--875 MeV/c2/c^2 are considered. This region is dominated by the ρ0ρ^{0} and ωω resonances. The branching fraction in this range is measured to be B{\cal B}(D0→K−π+μ+μ−D^{0}\rightarrow K^{-}π^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-}) = (4.17±0.12(stat)±0.40(syst))×10−6(4.17 \pm 0.12(stat) \pm 0.40(syst))\times10^{-6}. This is the first observation of the decay D0→K−π+μ+μ−D^{0}\rightarrow K^{-}π^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-}. Its branching fraction is consistent with the value expected in the Standard Model.

The signal significance is 8 σ8\,σ and the branching fraction is measured to be B(B+→D+K+π−)=(5.31±0.90±0.48±0.35)×10−6{\cal B}\left(B^{+}\to D^{+} K^{+} π^{-}\right) = (5.31 \pm 0.90 \pm 0.48 \pm 0.35)\times 10^{-6}, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the normalisation mode B+→D−K+π+B^{+}\to D^{-} K^{+} π^{+}, respectively. The Dalitz plot appears to be dominated by broad structures. Laser assisted Breit-Wheeler and Schwinger processes

The assistance of an intense optical laser pulse on electron-positron pair production by the Breit-Wheeler and Schwinger processes in XFEL fields is analyzed. The impact of a laser beam on high-energy photon collisions with XFEL photons consists in a phase space redistribution of the pairs emerging in the Breit-Wheeler sub-process. We provide numerical examples of the differential cross section for parameters related to the European XFEL. Analogously, the Schwinger type pair production in pulsed fields with oscillating components referring to a superposition of optical laser and XFEL frequencies is evaluated. The residual phase space distribution of created pairs is sensitive to the pulse shape and may differ significantly from transiently achieved mode occupations.

Measurement of forward W→eνW\to eν production in pppp collisions at s=8 \sqrt{s}=8\,TeV

A measurement of the cross-section for W→eνW \to eν production in pppp collisions is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 2\,fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of s=8 \sqrt{s}=8\,TeV. The electrons are required to have more than 20 20\,GeV of transverse momentum and to lie between 2.00 and 4.25 in pseudorapidity. The inclusive WW production cross-sections, where the WW decays to eνeν, are measured to be \begin{equation*} σ_{W^{+} \to e^{+}ν_{e}}=1124.4\pm 2.1\pm 21.5\pm 11.2\pm 13.0\,\mathrm{pb}, \end{equation*} \begin{equation*} σ_{W^{-} \to e^{-}\barν_{e}}=\,\,\,809.0\pm 1.9\pm 18.1\pm\,\,\,7.0\pm \phantom{0}9.4\,\mathrm{pb}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, the third are due to the knowledge of the LHC beam energy and the fourth are due to the luminosity determination. Differential cross-sections as a function of the electron pseudorapidity are measured. The W+/W−W^{+}/W^{-} cross-section ratio and production charge asymmetry are also reported. Results are compared with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Finally, in a precise test of lepton universality, the ratio of WW boson branching fractions is determined to be \begin{equation*} \mathcal{B}(W \to eν)/\mathcal{B}(W \to μν)=1.020\pm 0.002\pm 0.019, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurements are presented of electroweak boson production using data from pppp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=8 TeV\sqrt{s} = 8\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb−12.0\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1} recorded with the LHCb detector. The bosons are identified in the W→μνW\rightarrowμν and Z→μ+μ−Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-} decay channels. The cross-sections are measured for muons in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.52.0 < η< 4.5, with transverse momenta pT>20 GeV ⁣/cp_{\rm T} > 20{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V\!/}c} and, in the case of the ZZ boson, a dimuon mass within 60<Mμ+μ−<120 GeV ⁣/c260 < M_{μ^{+}μ^{-}} < 120{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V\!/}c^{2}}. The results are \begin{align*} σ_{W^{+}\rightarrowμ^{+}ν} &= 1093.6 \pm 2.1 \pm 7.2 \pm 10.9 \pm 12.7{\rm \,pb} \, , σ_{W^{-}\rightarrowμ^{-}\barν} &= \phantom{0}818.4 \pm 1.9 \pm 5.0 \pm \phantom{0}7.0 \pm \phantom{0}9.5{\rm \,pb} \, , σ_{Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}} &= \phantom{00}95.0 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.7 \pm \phantom{0}1.1 \pm \phantom{0}1.1{\rm \,pb} \, , \end{align*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, the third are due to the knowledge of the LHC beam energy and the fourth are due to the luminosity determination. The evolution of the WW and ZZ boson cross-sections with centre-of-mass energy is studied using previously reported measurements with 1.0 fb−11.0\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1} of data at 7 TeV7\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}. Differential distributions are also presented. Results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

This is the most precise measurement of aslsa_{\text{sl}}^s to date. It is consistent with the prediction from the Standard Model and will constrain new models of particle physics.

Measurement of the CKM angle γγ from a combination of LHCb results

A combination of measurements sensitive to the CKM angle γγ from LHCb is performed. The inputs are from analyses of time-integrated B+→DK+B^{+}\rightarrow DK^+, B0→DK∗0B^{0} \rightarrow D K^{*0}, B0→DK+π−B^{0} \rightarrow D K^+ π^- and B+→DK+π+π−B^{+} \rightarrow D K^+π^+π^- tree-level decays. In addition, results from a time-dependent analysis of Bs0→Ds∓K±B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow D_{s}^{\mp}K^{\pm} decays are included. The combination yields γ=(72.2−7.3+6.8)∘γ= (72.2^{+6.8}_{-7.3})^\circ, where the uncertainty includes systematic effects. The 95.5% confidence level interval is determined to be γ∈[55.9,85.2]∘γ\in [55.9,85.2]^\circ. The CP violation observables x±x_{\pm} and y±y_{\pm}, sensitive to the CKM angle γγ, are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} x_- &=& -0.15 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.01, y_- &=& 0.25 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.01, x_+ &=& 0.05 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.01, y_+ &=& -0.65^{+0.24}_{-0.23} \pm 0.08 \pm 0.01, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second systematic and the third arise from the uncertainty on the D→KS0π+π−D\rightarrow K^0_S π^+π^- amplitude model. These are the most precise measurements of these observables. They correspond to γ=(80−22+21)∘γ=(80^{+21}_{-22})^{\circ} and rB0=0.39±0.13r_{B^0}=0.39\pm0.13, where rB0r_{B^0} is the magnitude of the ratio of the suppressed and favoured B0→DK+π−B^0\rightarrow D K^+ π^- decay amplitudes, in a KπKπ mass region of ±50MeV\pm50 MeV around the K∗(892)0K^*(892)^0 mass and for an absolute value of the cosine of the K∗0K^{*0} decay angle larger than 0.40.4.

Measurement of the difference of time-integrated CP asymmetries in D0→K−K+D^0 \rightarrow K^{-} K^{+} and D0→π−π+D^0 \rightarrow π^{-} π^{+} decays

A search for CP violation in D0→K−K+D^0 \rightarrow K^{-} K^{+} and D0→π−π+D^0 \rightarrow π^{-} π^{+} decays is performed using pppp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−13~fb^{-1}, collected using the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 8~TeV. The flavour of the charm meson is inferred from the charge of the pion in D∗+→D0π+D^{*+}\rightarrow D^0π^+ and D∗−→D0ˉπ−D^{*-}\rightarrow \bar{D^0}π^{-} decays. The difference between the CP asymmetries in D0→K−K+D^0 \rightarrow K^{-} K^{+} and D0→π−π+D^0 \rightarrow π^{-} π^{+} decays, ΔACP≡ACP(K−K+)−ACP(π−π+)ΔA_{CP} \equiv A_{CP}(K^{-} K^{+}) - A_{CP}(π^{-} π^{+}), is measured to be (−0.10±0.08(stat)±0.03(syst))%\left( -0.10 \pm 0.08(stat) \pm 0.03(syst) \right) \%. This is the most precise measurement of a time-integrated CP asymmetry in the charm sector from a single experiment.

Measurement of the forward Z boson production cross-section in pp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

A measurement of the production cross-section of Z bosons in pp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV is presented using dimuon and dielectron final states in LHCb data. The cross-section is measured for leptons with pseudorapidities in the range 2.0<η<4.52.0 < η< 4.5, transverse momenta pT>20p_\text{T} > 20 GeV and dilepton invariant mass in the range 60<m(ℓℓ)<12060<m(\ell\ell)<120 GeV. The integrated cross-section from averaging the two final states is \begin{equation*}σ_{\text{Z}}^{\ell\ell} = 194.3 \pm 0.9 \pm 3.3 \pm 7.6\text{ pb,}\end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is due to systematic effects, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. In addition, differential cross-sections are measured as functions of the Z boson rapidity, transverse momentum and the angular variable ϕη∗ϕ^*_η.

Measurement of the mass and lifetime of the Ωb−Ω_b^- baryon

A proton-proton collision data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1} collected by LHCb at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 8 TeV, is used to reconstruct 63±963\pm9 Ωb−→Ωc0π−Ω_b^-\toΩ_c^0π^-, Ωc0→pK−K−π+Ω_c^0\to pK^-K^-π^+ decays. Using the Ξb−→Ξc0π−Ξ_b^-\toΞ_c^0π^-, Ξc0→pK−K−π+Ξ_c^0\to pK^-K^-π^+ decay mode for calibration, the lifetime ratio and absolute lifetime of the Ωb−Ω_b^- baryon are measured to be \begin{align*} \frac{τ_{Ω_b^-}}{τ_{Ξ_b^-}} &= 1.11\pm0.16\pm0.03, \\ τ_{Ω_b^-} &= 1.78\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.06~{\rm ps}, \end{align*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the calibration mode (for τΩb−τ_{Ω_b^-} only). A measurement is also made of the mass difference, mΩb−−mΞb−m_{Ω_b^-}-m_{Ξ_b^-}, and the corresponding Ωb−Ω_b^- mass, which yields \begin{align*} m_{Ω_b^-}-m_{Ξ_b^-} &= 247.4\pm3.2\pm0.5~{\rm MeV}/c^2, \\ m_{Ω_b^-} &= 6045.1\pm3.2\pm 0.5\pm0.6~{\rm MeV}/c^2. \end{align*} These results are consistent with previous measurements.

Measurement of the properties of the Ξb∗0Ξ_b^{*0} baryon

We perform a search for near-threshold Ξb0Ξ_b^0 resonances decaying to Ξb−π+Ξ_b^- π^+ in a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. We observe one resonant state, with the following properties: \begin{eqnarray*} m(Ξ_b^{*0}) - m(Ξ_b^-) - m(π^+) &=& 15.727 \pm 0.068 \, (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.023 \, (\mathrm{syst}) \, \mathrm{MeV}/c^2, Γ(Ξ_b^{*0}) &=& 0.90 \pm 0.16 \, (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.08 \, (\mathrm{syst}) \, \mathrm{MeV} . \end{eqnarray*} This confirms the previous observation by the CMS collaboration. The state is consistent with the JP=3/2+J^P=3/2^+ Ξb∗0Ξ_b^{*0} resonance expected in the quark model. This is the most precise determination of the mass and the first measurement of the natural width of this state. We have also measured the ratio \begin{align*} \frac{σ(pp \to Ξ_b^{*0} X){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^{*0} \to Ξ_b^- π^+)}{σ(pp \to Ξ_b^- X)} = 0.28 \pm 0.03 \, (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.01 \, (\mathrm{syst}) . \end{align*}

Measurements of long-range near-side angular correlations in sNN=5\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5TeV proton-lead collisions in the forward region

Two-particle angular correlations are studied in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of sNN=5\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5TeV, collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on data recorded in two beam configurations, in which either the direction of the proton or that of the lead ion is analysed. The correlations are measured in the laboratory system as a function of relative pseudorapidity, ΔηΔη, and relative azimuthal angle, ΔϕΔϕ, for events in different classes of event activity and for different bins of particle transverse momentum. In high-activity events a long-range correlation on the near side, Δϕ≈0Δϕ\approx 0, is observed in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.92.0<η<4.9. This measurement of long-range correlations on the near side in proton-lead collisions extends previous observations into the forward region up to η=4.9η=4.9. The correlation increases with growing event activity and is found to be more pronounced in the direction of the lead beam. However, the correlation in the direction of the lead and proton beams are found to be compatible when comparing events with similar absolute activity in the direction analysed.

Model-independent evidence for J/ψpJ/ψp contributions to Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^- decays

The data sample of Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^- decays acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8~TeV pppp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}, is inspected for the presence of J/ψpJ/ψp or J/ψK−J/ψK^- contributions with minimal assumptions about K−pK^- p contributions. It is demonstrated at more than 9 standard deviations that Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^- decays cannot be described with K−pK^- p contributions alone, and that J/ψpJ/ψp contributions play a dominant role in this incompatibility. These model-independent results support the previously obtained model-dependent evidence for Pc+→J/ψpP_c^+\to J/ψp charmonium-pentaquark states in the same data sample.

A binned Dalitz plot analysis of the decays B0→DK∗0B^0 \to D K^{\ast 0}, with D→KS0π+π−D \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-} and KS0K+K−K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}, is performed to measure the observables x±x_\pm and y±y_\pm, which are related to the CKM angle γγ and the hadronic parameters of the decays. The DD decay strong phase variation over the Dalitz plot is taken from measurements performed at the CLEO-c experiment, making the analysis independent of the DD decay model. With a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−13.0\,\rm{fb}^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment, the values of the CPCP violation parameters are found to be x+=0.05±0.35±0.02x_+ = 0.05 \pm 0.35 \pm 0.02, x−=−0.31±0.20±0.04x_-=-0.31\pm 0.20 \pm 0.04, y+=−0.81±0.28±0.06y_+=-0.81\pm 0.28\pm 0.06 and y−=0.31±0.21±0.05y_-=0.31\pm 0.21 \pm 0.05, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These observables correspond to values γγ = (71±20)∘(71 \pm 20)^\circ, rB0=0.56±0.17r_{B^0} = 0.56\pm 0.17 and δB0=(204 −20+21)∘δ_{B^0} = (204\,^{+21}_{-20})^\circ. Pair production by Schwinger and Breit-Wheeler processes in bi-frequent fields

Counter-propagating and suitably polarized light (laser) beams can provide conditions for pair production. Here, we consider in more detail the following two situations: (i) In the homogeneity regions of anti-nodes of linearly polarized ultra-high intensity laser beams, the Schwinger process is dynamically assisted by a second high-frequency field, e.g. by a XFEL beam. (ii) A high-energy probe photon beam colliding with a superposition of co-propagating intense laser and XFEL beams gives rise to the laser assisted Breit-Wheeler process. Prospects of such bi-frequent field constellations with respect to the feasibility of conversion of light into matter are discussed.

Associated production of bottomonia and open charm hadrons in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 88TeV is observed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb−1fb^{-1} accumulated with the LHCb detector. The observation of five combinations, Υ(1S)D0Υ(1S)D^0, Υ(2S)D0Υ(2S)D^0, Υ(1S)D+Υ(1S)D^+, Υ(2S)D+Υ(2S)D^+ and Υ(1S)Ds+Υ(1S)D^+_{s}, is reported. Production cross-sections are measured for Υ(1S)D0Υ(1S)D^0 and Υ(1S)D+Υ(1S)D^+ pairs in the forward region. The measured cross-sections and the differential distributions indicate the dominance of double parton scattering as the main production mechanism. This allows a precise measurement of the effective cross-section for double parton scattering.

Study of the production of Λb0Λ_b^0 and B‾0\overline{B}^0 hadrons in pppp collisions and first measurement of the Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^- branching fraction

The product of the Λb0Λ_b^0 (B‾0\overline{B}^0) differential production cross-section and the branching fraction of the decay Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^- (B‾0→J/ψK‾∗(892)0\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψ\overline{K}^*(892)^0) is measured as a function of the beauty hadron transverse momentum, pTp_{\rm T}, and rapidity, yy. The kinematic region of the measurements is pT<20 GeV/cp_{\rm T}<20~{\rm GeV}/c and 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5. The measurements use a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−13~{\rm fb}^{-1} collected by the LHCb detector in pppp collisions at centre-of-mass energies s=7 TeV\sqrt{s}=7~{\rm TeV} in 2011 and s=8 TeV\sqrt{s}=8~{\rm TeV} in 2012. Based on previous LHCb results of the fragmentation fraction ratio, fΛB0/fdf_{Λ_B^0}/f_d, the branching fraction of the decay Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^- is measured to be \begin{equation*} \mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^-)= (3.17\pm0.04\pm0.07\pm0.34^{+0.45}_{-0.28})\times10^{-4}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, the third is due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the decay B‾0→J/ψK‾∗(892)0\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψ\overline{K}^*(892)^0, and the fourth is due to the knowledge of fΛb0/fdf_{Λ_b^0}/f_d. The sum of the asymmetries in the production and decay between Λb0Λ_b^0 and Λ‾b0\overlineΛ_b^0 is also measured as a function of pTp_{\rm T} and yy. The previously published branching fraction of Λb0→J/ψpπ−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpπ^-, relative to that of Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^-, is updated. The branching fractions of Λb0→Pc+(→J/ψp)K−Λ_b^0\rightarrow P_c^+(\rightarrow J/ψp)K^- are determined.

BB flavour tagging using charm decays at the LHCb experiment

An algorithm is described for tagging the flavour content at production of neutral BB mesons in the LHCb experiment. The algorithm exploits the correlation of the flavour of a BB meson with the charge of a reconstructed secondary charm hadron from the decay of the other bb hadron produced in the proton-proton collision. Charm hadron candidates are identified in a number of fully or partially reconstructed Cabibbo-favoured decay modes. The algorithm is calibrated on the self-tagged decay modes B+→J/ψ K+B^+ \to J/ψ\, K^+ and B0→J/ψ K∗0B^0 \to J/ψ\, K^{*0} using 3.0 fb−13.0\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1} of data collected by the LHCb experiment at pppp centre-of-mass energies of 7 TeV7\mathrm{\,TeV} and 8 TeV8\mathrm{\,TeV}. Its tagging power on these samples of B→J/ψ XB \to J/ψ\, X decays is (0.30±0.01±0.01)%(0.30 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.01) \%.

The Dalitz plot distribution of B0→Dˉ0K+π−B^0 \rightarrow \bar{D}^0 K^+ π^- decays is studied using a data sample corresponding to 3.0fb−13.0\rm{fb}^{-1} of pppp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The data are described by an amplitude model that contains contributions from intermediate K∗(892)0K^*(892)^0, K∗(1410)0K^*(1410)^0, K2∗(1430)0K^*_2(1430)^0 and D2∗(2460)−D^*_2(2460)^- resonances. The model also contains components to describe broad structures, including the K0∗(1430)0K^*_0(1430)^0 and D0∗(2400)−D^*_0(2400)^- resonances, in the KπKπ S-wave and the DπDπ S- and P-waves. The masses and widths of the D0∗(2400)−D^*_0(2400)^- and D2∗(2460)−D^*_2(2460)^- resonances are measured, as are the complex amplitudes and fit fractions for all components included in the amplitude model. Assisted dynamical Schwinger effect: pair production in a pulsed bifrequent field

Electron-positron pair production by the superposition of two laser pulses with different frequencies and amplitudes is analyzed as a particular realization of the assisted dynamic Schwinger effect. It is demonstrated that, within a non-perturbative kinetic equation framework, an amplification effect is conceivable for certain parameters. When both pulses have wavelengths longer than the Compton wavelength, the residual net density of produced pairs is determined by the resultant field strength. The number of pairs starts to grow rapidly if the wavelength of the high-frequency laser component gets close to the Compton wavelength.

Dalitz plot analysis of B0→D‾0π+π−B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^- decays

The resonant substructures of B0→D‾0π+π−B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^- decays are studied with the Dalitz plot technique. In this study a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} of pppp collisions collected by the LHCb detector is used. The branching fraction of the B0→D‾0π+π−B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 π^+π^- decay in the region m(D‾0π±)>2.1m(\overline{D}^0π^{\pm})>2.1 GeV/c2/c^2 is measured to be (8.46±0.14±0.29±0.40)×10−4(8.46 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.40) \times 10^{-4}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the last arises from the normalisation channel B0→D∗(2010)−π+B^0 \to D^*(2010)^-π^+. The π+π−π^+π^- S-wave components are modelled with the Isobar and K-matrix formalisms. Results of the Dalitz plot analyses using both models are presented. A resonant structure at m(D‾0π−)≈2.8m(\overline{D}^0π^-) \approx 2.8 GeV/c2/c^{2} is confirmed and its spin-parity is determined for the first time as JP=3−J^P = 3^-. The branching fraction, mass and width of this structure are determined together with those of the D0∗(2400)−D^*_0(2400)^- and D2∗(2460)−D^*_2(2460)^- resonances. The branching fractions of other B0→D‾0h0B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 h^0 decay components with h0→π+π−h^0 \to π^+π^- are also reported. Many of these branching fraction measurements are the most precise to date. The first observation of the decays B0→D‾0f0(500)B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(500), B0→D‾0f0(980)B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(980), B0→D‾0ρ(1450)B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 ρ(1450), B0→D3∗(2760)−π+B^0 \to D_3^*(2760)^- π^+ and the first evidence of B0→D‾0f0(2020)B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(2020) are presented.

Determination of the quark coupling strength ∣Vub∣|V_{ub}| using baryonic decays

In the Standard Model of particle physics, the strength of the couplings of the bb quark to the uu and cc quarks, ∣Vub∣|V_{ub}| and ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}|, are governed by the coupling of the quarks to the Higgs boson. Using data from the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, the probability for the Λb0Λ^0_b baryon to decay into the pμ−ν‾μp μ^- \overlineν_μ final state relative to the Λc+μ−ν‾μΛ^+_c μ^- \overlineν_μ final state is measured. Combined with theoretical calculations of the strong interaction and a previously measured value of ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}|, the first ∣Vub∣|V_{ub}| measurement to use a baryonic decay is performed. This measurement is consistent with previous determinations of ∣Vub∣|V_{ub}| using BB meson decays to specific final states and confirms the existing incompatibility with those using an inclusive sample of final states.

Evidence for the strangeness-changing weak decay Ξb−→Λb0π−Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-

Using a pppp collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0~fb−1^{-1}, collected by the LHCb detector, we present the first search for the strangeness-changing weak decay Ξb−→Λb0π−Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-. No bb hadron decay of this type has been seen before. A signal for this decay, corresponding to a significance of 3.2 standard deviations, is reported. The relative rate is measured to be fΞb−fΛb0B(Ξb−→Λb0π−)=(5.7±1.8−0.9+0.8)×10−4{f_{Ξ_b^-}\over{f_{Λ_b^0}}}{\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-) = (5.7\pm1.8^{+0.8}_{-0.9})\times10^{-4}, where fΞb−f_{Ξ_b^-} and fΛb0f_{Λ_b^0} are the b→Ξb−b\toΞ_b^- and b→Λb0b\toΛ_b^0 fragmentation fractions, and B(Ξb−→Λb0π−){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-) is the branching fraction. Assuming fΞb−/fΛb0f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0} is bounded between 0.1 and 0.3, the branching fraction B(Ξb−→Λb0π−){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-) would lie in the range from (0.57±0.21)%(0.57\pm0.21)\% to (0.19±0.07)%(0.19\pm0.07)\%.

The differential branching fraction with respect to the dimuon invariant mass squared, and the C ⁣PC\!P asymmetry of the B±→π±μ+μ−B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^- decay are measured for the first time. The CKM matrix elements ∣Vtd∣|V_{td}| and ∣Vts∣|V_{ts}|, and the ratio ∣Vtd/Vts∣|V_{td}/V_{ts}| are determined. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The total branching fraction and C ⁣PC\!P asymmetry of B±→π±μ+μ−B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^- decays are measured to be \begin{eqnarray} \mathcal{B}(B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-) &=& (1.83 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.05) \times 10^{-8}\,\,\,\mathrm{and} \nonumber\\ \mathcal{A}_{C\!P}(B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-) &=& -0.11 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.01\,, \nonumber \end{eqnarray} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The W ⁣+ ⁣bW\!+\!b final state with W→μνW\toμν is reconstructed using muons with a transverse momentum, pTp_{\rm T}, larger than 25 GeV in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.52.0<η<4.5. The bb jets are required to have 50<pT<10050 < p_{\rm T} < 100 GeV and 2.2<η<4.22.2 < η< 4.2, while the transverse component of the sum of the muon and bb-jet momenta must satisfy pT>20p_{\rm T} > 20 GeV. The results are based on data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.0 and 2.02.0 fb−1^{-1} collected at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV by LHCb. The inclusive top quark production cross-sections in the fiducial region are σ(top)[7TeV]=239±53(stat)±33(syst)±24(theory) fbσ({\rm top})[7\rm{TeV}] = 239\pm53({\rm stat})\pm33({\rm syst})\pm24({\rm theory})\,{\rm fb} and σ(top)[8TeV]=289±43(stat)±40(syst)±29(theory) fbσ({\rm top})[8\rm{TeV}] = 289\pm43({\rm stat})\pm40({\rm syst})\pm29({\rm theory})\,{\rm fb}. The measurement is based on a sample of Z→e+e−\rm Z\rightarrow e^+e^- decays reconstructed using the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0fb−1^{-1}. Measurement of indirect CPCP asymmetries in D0→K−K+D^0\rightarrow K^-K^+ and D0→π−π+D^0\rightarrow π^-π^+ decays using semileptonic BB decays

Time-dependent CPCP asymmetries in the decay rates of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays D0→K−K+D^0\rightarrow K^-K^+ and D0→π−π+D^0\rightarrow π^-π^+ are measured in pppp collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. The D0D^0 mesons are produced in semileptonic bb-hadron decays, where the charge of the accompanying muon is used to determine the initial state as D0D^0 or Dˉ0\bar{D}^0. The asymmetries in effective lifetimes between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 decays, which are sensitive to indirect CPCP violation, are determined to be \begin{align*} A_Γ(K^-K^+) = (-0.134 \pm 0.077 \; {}^{+0.026}_{-0.034})\% \, A_Γ(π^-π^+) = (-0.092\pm 0.145 \; {}^{+0.025}_{-0.033})\% \, \end{align*} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with previous measurements and with the hypothesis of no indirect CPCP violation in D0D^0 decays.

Measurement of the Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0 \to ϕϕ branching fraction and search for the decay B0→ϕϕB^0 \to ϕϕ

Using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} collected in pppp collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, the Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0 \to ϕϕ branching fraction is measured to be B(Bs0→ϕϕ)=(1.84±0.05(stat)±0.07(syst)±0.11(fs/fd)±0.12(norm))×10−5, \mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to ϕϕ) = ( 1.84 \pm 0.05 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.07 (\text{syst}) \pm 0.11 (f_s/f_d) \pm 0.12 (\text{norm}) ) \times 10^{-5}, where fs/fdf_s/f_d represents the ratio of the Bs0B_s^0 to B0B^0 production cross-sections, and the B0→ϕK∗(892)0B^0 \to ϕK^*(892)^0 decay mode is used for normalization. This is the most precise measurement of this branching fraction to date, representing a factor five reduction in the statistical uncertainty compared with the previous best measurement. A search for the decay B0→ϕϕB^0 \to ϕϕ is also made. No signal is observed, and an upper limit on the branching fraction is set as B(B0→ϕϕ)<2.8×10−8 \mathcal{B}(B^0 \to ϕϕ) < 2.8 \times 10^{-8} at 90% confidence level. This is a factor of seven improvement compared to the previous best limit.

Measurement of the branching fraction ratio B(Bc+→ψ(2S)π+)/B(Bc+→J/ψπ+)\mathcal{B}(B_c^+ \rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+)/\mathcal{B}(B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+)

Using pppp collision data collected by LHCb at center-of-mass energies s\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}, the ratio of the branching fraction of the Bc+→ψ(2S)π+B_c^+ \rightarrow ψ(2S)π^+ decay relative to that of the Bc+→J/ψπ+B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+ decay is measured to be 0.268 ±\pm 0.032 (stat) ±\pm 0.007 (syst) ±\pm 0.006 (BF). The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainties on the branching fractions of the J/ψ→μ+μ−J/ψ\rightarrow μ^+μ^- and ψ(2S)→μ+μ−ψ(2S) \rightarrow μ^+μ^- decays. This measurement is consistent with the previous LHCb result, and the statistical uncertainty is halved.

Measurement of the exclusive ΥΥ production cross-section in pppp collisions at s=\sqrt{s}=7 TeV and 8 TeV

A study is presented of central exclusive production of Υ(nS)Υ(nS) states, where the Υ(nS)Υ(nS) resonances decay to the μ+μ−μ^+μ^- final state, using pppp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment. The cross-section is measured in the rapidity range 2<y(Υ)<4.52<y(Υ)<4.5 where the muons are reconstructed in the pseudorapidity range 2<η(μ±)<4.52<η(μ^\pm)<4.5. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 fb−1^{-1} and was collected at centre-of-mass energies of 77 TeV and 88 TeV. The measured Υ(1S)Υ(1S) and Υ(2S)Υ(2S) production cross-sections are \begin{eqnarray} σ(pp \to pΥ(1S)p) &=& 9.0 \pm 2.1 \pm 1.7\textrm{ pb and}\nonumber\\ σ(pp \to pΥ(2S)p) &=& 1.3 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.3\textrm{ pb},\nonumber \end{eqnarray} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The Υ(1S)Υ(1S) cross-section is also measured as a function of rapidity and is found to be in good agreement with Standard Model predictions. An upper limit is set at 3.4 pb at the 95\% confidence level for the exclusive Υ(3S)Υ(3S) production cross-section, including possible contamination from χb(3P)→Υ(3S)γχ_b(3P)\toΥ(3S)γ decays.

Measurement of the forward ZZ boson production cross-section in pppp collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV

A measurement of the production cross-section for ZZ bosons that decay to muons is presented. The data were recorded by the LHCb detector during pppp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−1^{-1}. The cross-section is measured for muons in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.52.0 < η< 4.5 with transverse momenta pT>20p_{T} > 20 GeV/c. The dimuon mass is restricted to 60<Mμ+μ−<12060 < M_{μ^{+}μ^{-}} < 120 GeV/c2^{2}. The measured cross-section is σZ→μ+μ−=(76.0±0.3±0.5±1.0±1.3) pbσ_{Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}} = (76.0 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.5 \pm 1.0 \pm 1.3) \, \text{pb} where the uncertainties are due to the sample size, systematic effects, the beam energy and the luminosity. This result is in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The cross-section is also measured differentially as a function of kinematic variables of the ZZ boson. Ratios of the production cross-sections of electroweak bosons are presented using updated LHCb measurements of WW boson production. A precise test of the Standard Model is provided by the measurement of the ratio σW+→μ+νμ+σW−→μ−νˉμσZ→μ+μ−=20.63±0.09±0.12±0.05,\frac{σ_{W^{+}\rightarrowμ^{+}ν_μ} + σ_{W^{-}\rightarrowμ^{-}\barν_μ}}{σ_{Z\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}}} = 20.63\pm0.09\pm0.12\pm0.05, where the uncertainty due to luminosity cancels.

Measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in Z/γ∗→μ+μ−Z/γ^{\ast} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-} decays and determination of the effective weak mixing angle

The forward-backward charge asymmetry for the process qqˉ→Z/γ∗→μ+μ−q\bar{q} \rightarrow Z/γ^{\ast} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-} is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the dimuon system. Measurements are performed using proton proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 and 8\tev, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 11fb−1^{-1} and 22fb−1^{-1} respectively. Within the Standard Model the results constrain the effective electroweak mixing angle to be sin2θWeff=0.23142±0.00073±0.00052±0.00056sin^{2}θ_{W}^{eff} = 0.23142 \pm 0.00073 \pm 0.00052 \pm 0.00056 where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third theoretical. This result is in agreement with the current world average, and is one of the most precise determinations at hadron colliders to date.

Measurement of the semileptonic CPCP asymmetry in B0−B‾0B^0-\overline{B}{}^0 mixing

The semileptonic CPCP asymmetry in B0−B‾0B^0-\overline{B}{}^0 mixing, aslda_{\rm sl}^d, is measured in proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1}, recorded by the LHCb experiment. Semileptonic B0B^0 decays are reconstructed in the inclusive final states D−μ+D^-μ^+ and D∗−μ+D^{*-}μ^+, where the D−D^- meson decays into the K+π−π−K^+π^-π^- final state, and the D∗−D^{*-} meson into the D‾0(→K+π−)π−\overline{D}{}^0(\rightarrow K^+π^-)π^- final state. The asymmetry between the numbers of D(∗)−μ+D^{(*)-}μ^+ and D(∗)+μ−D^{(*)+}μ^- decays is measured as a function of the decay time of the B0B^0 mesons. The CPCP asymmetry is measured to be asld=(−0.02±0.19±0.30)%a_{\rm sl}^d = (-0.02 \pm 0.19 \pm 0.30)\%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the most precise measurement of aslda_{\rm sl}^d to date and is consistent with the prediction from the Standard Model.

The associated production of a Z boson or an off-shell photon γ∗γ^* with a bottom quark in the forward region is studied using proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV7{\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}}. The Z bosons are reconstructed in the Z/γ∗ ⁣→μ+μ−{\text{Z}/γ^*}\!\rightarrow{μ^{+}μ^{-}} final state from muons with a transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV20{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}, while two transverse momentum thresholds are considered for jets (10 GeV10{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}} and 20 GeV20{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}). Both muons and jets are reconstructed in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.52.0 < η< 4.5. The results are based on data corresponding to $1.0{\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}}$ recorded in 2011 with the LHCb detector. The measurement of the Z+b-jet cross-section is normalized to the Z+jet cross-section. Observation of J/ψpJ/ψp resonances consistent with pentaquark states in Λb0→J/ψK−p{Λ_b^0\to J/ψK^-p} decays

Observations of exotic structures in the J/ψpJ/ψp channel, that we refer to as pentaquark-charmonium states, in Λb0→J/ψK−pΛ_b^0\to J/ψK^- p decays are presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3/fb acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV pp collisions. An amplitude analysis is performed on the three-body final-state that reproduces the two-body mass and angular distributions. To obtain a satisfactory fit of the structures seen in the J/ψpJ/ψp mass spectrum, it is necessary to include two Breit-Wigner amplitudes that each describe a resonant state. The significance of each of these resonances is more than 9 standard deviations. One has a mass of 4380±8±294380\pm 8\pm 29 MeV and a width of 205±18±86205\pm 18\pm 86 MeV, while the second is narrower, with a mass of 4449.8±1.7±2.54449.8\pm 1.7\pm 2.5 MeV and a width of 39±5±1939\pm 5\pm 19 MeV. The preferred JPJ^P assignments are of opposite parity, with one state having spin 3/2 and the other 5/2.

More than 600 ${\B^0 \to (π^+π^-)(π^+π^-)}$ signal decays are selected and used to perform an amplitude analysis from which the B0→ρ0ρ0{B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0} decay is observed for the first time with 7.1 standard deviations significance. The fraction of B0→ρ0ρ0{B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0} decays yielding a longitudinally polarised final state is measured to be $\fL = 0.745^{+0.048}_{-0.058} ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.034 ({\rm syst})$. The B0→ρ0ρ0{B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0} branching fraction, using the ${\B^0 \to ϕK^*(892)^{0}}$ decay as reference, is also reported as ${\BF(B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0) = (0.94 \pm 0.17 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.09 ({\rm syst}) \pm 0.06 ({\rm BF})) \times 10^{-6}}$.

The study is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to 3.03.0 fb−1{\rm fb^{-1}} of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector. The significance of the signal is 6.46.4 standard deviations. The branching fraction is measured to be [3.31±0.64 (stat)±0.28 (syst)±0.12 (norm)]×10−5[3.31 \pm 0.64\,{\rm (stat)} \pm 0.28\,{\rm (syst)} \pm 0.12\,{\rm (norm)}]\times10^{-5}, where the third uncertainty comes from the B±→η′K±B^{\pm}\toη' K^{\pm} branching fraction that is used as a normalisation. In addition, the charge asymmetries of B±→η′K±B^{\pm}\toη' K^{\pm} and B±→ϕK±B^{\pm}\toϕK^{\pm}, which are control channels, are measured to be (−0.2±1.3)%(-0.2 \pm1.3)\% and (+1.7±1.3)%(+1.7\pm1.3)\%, respectively. Using an amplitude analysis, the fraction of decays proceeding via an intermediate K∗(892)0K^*(892)^0 meson is measured to be 0.645±0.049(stat)±0.049(syst)0.645 \pm 0.049 (stat) \pm 0.049 (syst) and its longitudinal polarisation fraction is 0.524±0.056(stat)±0.029(syst)0.524 \pm 0.056 (stat) \pm 0.029 (syst). Observation of the rare Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\toμ^+μ^- decay from the combined analysis of CMS and LHCb data

A joint measurement is presented of the branching fractions Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\toμ^+μ^- and B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- in proton-proton collisions at the LHC by the CMS and LHCb experiments. The data samples were collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and in 2012 at 8 TeV. The combined analysis produces the first observation of the Bs0→μ+μ−B^0_s\toμ^+μ^- decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement of its branching fraction so far. Furthermore, evidence for the B0→μ+μ−B^0\toμ^+μ^- decay is obtained with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. The branching fraction measurements are statistically compatible with SM predictions and impose stringent constraints on several theories beyond the SM.

Observation of two new Ξb−Ξ_b^- baryon resonances

Two structures are observed close to the kinematic threshold in the Ξb0π−Ξ_b^0 π^- mass spectrum in a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} recorded by the LHCb experiment. In the quark model, two baryonic resonances with quark content bdsbds are expected in this mass region: the spin-parity JP=12+J^P = \frac{1}{2}^+ and JP=32+J^P=\frac{3}{2}^+ states, denoted Ξb′−Ξ_b^{\prime -} and Ξb∗−Ξ_b^{*-}. Interpreting the structures as these resonances, we measure the mass differences and the width of the heavier state to be m(Ξb′−)−m(Ξb0)−m(π−)=3.653±0.018±0.006m(Ξ_b^{\prime -}) - m(Ξ_b^0) - m(π^{-}) = 3.653 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.006 MeV/c2/c^2, m(Ξb∗−)−m(Ξb0)−m(π−)=23.96±0.12±0.06m(Ξ_b^{*-}) - m(Ξ_b^0) - m(π^{-}) = 23.96 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.06 MeV/c2/c^2, Γ(Ξb∗−)=1.65±0.31±0.10Γ(Ξ_b^{*-}) = 1.65 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.10 MeV, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The width of the lighter state is consistent with zero, and we place an upper limit of Γ(Ξb′−)<0.08Γ(Ξ_b^{\prime -}) < 0.08 MeV at 95% confidence level. Relative production rates of these states are also reported.

Precise measurements of the properties of the B_1(5721)^(0,+) and B_2*(5747)^(0,+) states and observation of B^(+,0) pi^(-,+) mass structures

Invariant mass distributions of B+pi- and B0pi+ combinations are investigated in order to study excited B mesons. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb-1 of pp collision data, recorded by the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Precise measurements of the masses and widths of the B_1(5721)^(0,+) and B_2*(5747)^(0,+) states are reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb−11.0\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1} of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV7\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V} and 2.0 fb−12.0\mathrm{\,fb}^{-1} at 8 TeV8\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}. No evidence is found for a signal, and a limit is set at 90%90\% confidence level on the branching fraction, B(τ−→μ−μ+μ−)<4.6×10−8\mathcal{B}(τ^-\to μ^-μ^+μ^-) < 4.6 \times 10^{-8}.

Search for the rare decays B0→J/ψγB^{0}\to J/ψγ and Bs0→J/ψγB^{0}_{s} \to J/ψγ

A search for the rare decay of a B0B^{0} or Bs0B^{0}_{s} meson into the final state J/ψγJ/ψγ is performed, using data collected by the LHCb experiment in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 88 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}. The observed number of signal candidates is consistent with a background-only hypothesis. Branching fraction values larger than 1.7×10−61.7\times 10^{-6} for the B0→J/ψγB^{0}\to J/ψγ decay mode are excluded at 90% confidence level. For the Bs0→J/ψγB^{0}_{s}\to J/ψγ decay mode, branching fraction values larger than 7.4×10−67.4\times 10^{-6} are excluded at 90% confidence level, this is the first branching fraction limit for this decay.

Study of B−→DK−π+π−B^{-}\to DK^-π^+π^- and B−→Dπ−π+π−B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^- decays and determination of the CKM angle γγ

We report a study of the suppressed B−→DK−π+π−B^-\to DK^-π^+π^- and favored B−→Dπ−π+π−B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^- decays, where the neutral DD meson is detected through its decays to the K∓π±K^{\mp}π^{\pm} and CP-even K+K−K^+K^- and π+π−π^+π^- final states. The measurement is carried out using a proton-proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0~fb−1^{-1}. We observe the first significant signals in the CP-even final states of the DD meson for both the suppressed B−→DK−π+π−B^-\to DK^-π^+π^- and favored B−→Dπ−π+π−B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^- modes, as well as in the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed D→K+π−D\to K^+π^- final state of the B−→Dπ−π+π−B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^- decay. Evidence for the ADS suppressed decay B−→DK−π+π−B^{-}\to DK^-π^+π^-, with D→K+π−D\to K^+π^-, is also presented. From the observed yields in the B−→DK−π+π−B^-\to DK^-π^+π^-, B−→Dπ−π+π−B^-\to Dπ^-π^+π^- and their charge conjugate decay modes, we measure the value of the weak phase to be γ=(74−19+20)oγ=(74^{+20}_{-19})^{\rm o}. This is one of the most precise single-measurement determinations of γγ to date.

Study of WW boson production in association with beauty and charm

The associated production of a WW boson with a jet originating from either a light parton or heavy-flavor quark is studied in the forward region using proton-proton collisions. The analysis uses data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.0 and 2.0 fb−12.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1} collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. The WW bosons are reconstructed using the W→μνW\toμν decay and muons with a transverse momentum, pTp_{\rm T}, larger than 20 GeV in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.52.0<η<4.5. The partons are reconstructed as jets with pT>20p_{\rm T} > 20 GeV and 2.2<η<4.22.2 < η< 4.2. The sum of the muon and jet momenta must satisfy pT>20p_{\rm T} > 20 GeV. The fraction of W+W+jet events that originate from beauty and charm quarks is measured, along with the charge asymmetries of the W ⁣+ ⁣bW\!+\!b and W ⁣+ ⁣cW\!+\!c production cross-sections. The ratio of the W+W+jet to Z+Z+jet production cross-sections is also measured using the Z→μμZ\toμμ decay. All results are in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

Study of the rare Bs0B_s^0 and B0B^0 decays into the π+π−μ+μ−π^+π^-μ^+μ^- final state

A search for the rare decays Bs0→π+π−μ+μ−B_s^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- and B0→π+π−μ+μ−B^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- is performed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Decay candidates with pion pairs that have invariant mass in the range 0.5-1.3 GeV/c2c^2 and with muon pairs that do not originate from a resonance are considered. The first observation of the decay Bs0→π+π−μ+μ−B_s^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- and the first evidence of the decay B0→π+π−μ+μ−B^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- are obtained and the branching fractions, restricted to the dipion-mass range considered, are measured to be B(Bs0→π+π−μ+μ−)=(8.6±1.5 (stat)±0.7 (syst)±0.7 (norm))×10−8\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-)=(8.6\pm 1.5\,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.7\,({\rm syst})\pm 0.7\,({\rm norm}))\times 10^{-8} and B(B0→π+π−μ+μ−)=(2.11±0.51 (stat)±0.15 (syst)±0.16 (norm))×10−8\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^-)=(2.11\pm 0.51\,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.15\,({\rm syst})\pm 0.16\,({\rm norm}) )\times 10^{-8}, where the third uncertainty is due to the branching fraction of the decay B0→J/ψ(→μ+μ−)K∗(890)0(→K+π−)B^0\to J/ψ(\to μ^+μ^-)K^*(890)^0(\to K^+π^-), used as a normalisation.

Determination of the branching fractions of Bs0→Ds∓K±B_{s}^{0} \to D_{s}^{\mp} K^{\pm} and B0→Ds−K+B^{0} \to D_{s}^{-} K^{+}

Measurements are presented of the branching fractions of the decays Bs0→Ds∓K±B_{s}^{0} \to D_{s}^{\mp} K^{\pm} and B0→Ds−K+B^{0} \to D_{s}^{-} K^{+} relative to the decays Bs0→Ds−π+B_{s}^{0} \to D_{s}^{-} π^{+} and B0→D−π+B^{0} \to D^{-} π^{+}, respectively. The data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} of proton-proton collisions. The ratios of branching fractions are B(Bs0→Ds∓K±)B(Bs0→Ds−π+)=0.0752±0.0015±0.0019\dfrac{\mathcal{B}(B_{s}^{0} \to D_{s}^{\mp} K^{\pm})}{\mathcal{B}(B_{s}^{0} \to D_{s}^{-} π^{+})} = 0.0752 \pm 0.0015 \pm 0.0019 and B(B0→Ds−K+)B(B0→D−π+)=0.0129±0.0005±0.0008,\dfrac{\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to D_{s}^{-} K^{+})}{\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to D^{-} π^{+})} = 0.0129 \pm 0.0005 \pm 0.0008, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase ββ in B0→J/ψπ+π−B^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^- decays and limits on penguin effects

Time-dependent CP violation is measured in the B0→J/ψπ+π−B^0\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^- channel for each π+π−π^+π^- resonant final state using data collected with an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1} in pppp collisions using the LHCb detector. The final state with the largest rate, J/ψρ0(770)J/ψρ^0(770), is used to measure the CP-violating angle 2βeff2β^{\rm eff} to be (41.7±9.6−6.3+2.8)∘(41.7\pm 9.6_{-6.3}^{+2.8})^{\circ}. This result can be used to limit the size of penguin amplitude contributions to CP violation measurements in, for example, Bs0→J/ψϕB_s^0\rightarrow J/ψϕ decays. Assuming approximate SU(3) flavour symmetry and neglecting higher order diagrams, the shift in the CP-violating phase ϕsϕ_s is limited to be within the interval [−1.05∘-1.05^\circ, +1.18∘1.18^\circ] at 95% confidence level. Changes to the limit due to SU(3) symmetry breaking effects are also discussed.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase ϕsϕ_s in Bˉs0→Ds+Ds−\bar{B}^{0}_{s}\to D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-} decays

We present a measurement of the CPCP-violating weak mixing phase ϕsϕ_s using the decay Bˉs0→Ds+Ds−\bar{B}^{0}_{s}\to D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-} in a data sample corresponding to 3.03.0 fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector in pppp collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. An analysis of the time evolution of the system, which does not constrain ∣λ∣=1|λ|=1 to allow for the presence of CPCP violation in decay, yields ϕs=0.02±0.17ϕ_s = 0.02 \pm 0.17 (stat) ±0.02\pm 0.02 (syst) rad, ∣λ∣=0.91−0.15+0.18|λ| = 0.91^{+0.18}_{-0.15} (stat) ±0.02\pm0.02 (syst). This result is consistent with the Standard Model expectation.

Measurement of the inelastic pppp cross-section at a centre-of-mass energy of s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV

The cross-section for inelastic proton-proton collisions, with at least one prompt long-lived charged particle of transverse momentum pT>0.2p_{\rm T}>0.2 GeV/cc in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.52.0<η<4.5, is measured by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of s=7\sqrt{s}=7 TeV. The cross-section in this kinematic range is determined to be σinelacc=55.0±2.4σ_{\rm inel}^{\rm acc} = 55.0 \pm 2.4 mb within the spectrometer acceptance with an experimental uncertainty that is dominated by systematic contributions. Extrapolation to the full phase space, using PYTHIA 6, yields σinel=66.9±2.9±4.4σ_{\rm inel} = 66.9 \pm 2.9 \pm 4.4 mb, where the first uncertainty is experimental and the second is due to the extrapolation.

Measurement of the lifetime of the Bc+B_c^+ meson using the Bc+→J/ψπ+B_c^+\rightarrow J/ψπ^+ decay mode

The difference in total widths between the Bc+B_c^+ and B+B^+ mesons is measured using 3.0fb−1^{-1} of data collected by the LHCb experiment in 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Through the study of the time evolution of Bc+→J/ψπ+B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+ and B+→J/ψK+B^+\rightarrow J/ψK^+ decays, the width difference is measured to be ΔΓ≡ΓBc+−ΓB+=4.46±0.14±0.07mm−1c, ΔΓ\equiv Γ_{B_c^+} - Γ_{B^+} = 4.46 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.07mm^{-1}c, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The known lifetime of the B+B^+ meson is used to convert this to a precise measurement of the Bc+B_c^+ lifetime, τBc+=513.4±11.0±5.7fs,τ_{B_c^+} = 513.4 \pm 11.0 \pm 5.7fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Precision measurement of CPCP violation in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B_s^0 \to J/ψK^+K^- decays

The time-dependent CPCP asymmetry in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B_s^0 \to J/ψK^+K^- decays is measured using pppp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.03.0fb−1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 77 and 88TeV. In a sample of 96 000 Bs0→J/ψK+K−B_s^0 \to J/ψK^+K^- decays, the CPCP-violating phase ϕsϕ_s is measured, as well as the decay widths ΓLΓ_{L} and ΓHΓ_{H} of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the Bs0−Bˉs0B_s^0-\bar{B}_s^0 system. The values obtained are ϕs=−0.058±0.049±0.006ϕ_s = -0.058 \pm 0.049 \pm 0.006 rad, Γs≡(ΓL+ΓH)/2=0.6603±0.0027±0.0015Γ_s \equiv (Γ_{L}+Γ_{H})/2 = 0.6603 \pm 0.0027 \pm 0.0015ps−1^{-1}, andΔΓs≡ΓL−ΓH=0.0805±0.0091±0.0032ΔΓ_s \equiv Γ_{L} - Γ_{H} = 0.0805 \pm 0.0091 \pm 0.0032ps−1^{-1}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of those quantities to date. A combined analysis with Bs0→J/ψπ+π−B_s^{0} \to J/ψπ^+π^- decays gives ϕs=−0.010±0.039ϕ_s = -0.010 \pm 0.039 rad. All measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. For the first time the phase ϕsϕ_s is measured independently for each polarisation state of the K+K−K^+K^- system and shows no evidence for polarisation dependence.

Precision measurement of the mass and lifetime of the Xi_b^- baryon

We report on measurements of the mass and lifetime of the Xi_b^- baryon using about 1800 Xi_b^- decays reconstructed in a proton-proton collision data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. The decays are reconstructed in the Xi_b^- --> Xi_c^0 pi^-, Xi_c^0 --> pK-K-pi+ channel and the mass and lifetime are measured using the Lambda_b^0 --> Lambda_c^+ pi- mode as a reference. We measure M(Xi_b^-) - M(Lambda_b^0) = 178.36 +- 0.46 +- 0.16 MeV/c^2 and tau(Xi_b^-)/tau(Lambda_b^0) = 1.089 +- 0.026 +- 0.011, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These results lead to a factor of two better precision on the Xi_b^- mass and lifetime compared to previous best measurements, and are consistent with theoretical expectations.

Search for CP violation in D0→π−π+π0D^0\toπ^-π^+π^0 decays with the energy test

A search for time-integrated CP violation in the Cabibbo-suppressed decay D0→π−π+π0D^0\toπ^-π^+π^0 is performed using for the first time an unbinned model-independent technique known as the energy test. Using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of s\sqrt{s} = 8 TeV, the world's best sensitivity to CP violation in this decay is obtained. The data are found to be consistent with the hypothesis of CP symmetry with a p-value of (2.6 +/- 0.5)%.

Study of η−η′η-η^{\prime} mixing from measurement of B(s)0→J/ψη(′)B^0_{(s)} \rightarrow J/ψη^{(\prime)}~decay rates

A study of B0B^0~and Bs0B^0_s meson decays into J/ψηJ/ψη~and J/ψη′J/ψη^{\prime} final states is performed using a data set of proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to 3.0fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. The decay B0→J/ψη′B^0 \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime} is observed for thefirst time. The following ratios of branching fractions are measured: B(B0→J/ψη′)B(Bs0→J/ψη′)=(2.28±0.65 (stat) ±0.10 (syst) ±0.13 (fs/fd))×10−2, \frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime})}{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime})} = (2.28\pm0.65\,(stat)\,\pm0.10\,(syst)\,\pm0.13\,(f_{s}/f_{d}))\times10^{-2}, B(B0→J/ψη)B(Bs0→J/ψη)=(1.85±0.61 (stat) ±0.09 (syst) ±0.11 (fs/fd))×10−2, \frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow J/ψη)}{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψη)} = (1.85\pm0.61\,(stat)\,\pm0.09\,(syst)\,\pm0.11\,(f_{s}/f_{d}))\times10^{-2}, where the third uncertainty is related to the present knowledge of fs/fdf_{s}/f_{d}, the ratio between the probabilities for a bb quark to form a Bs0B^0_s or B0B^0 meson. The branching fraction ratios are used to determine the parameters of η−η′η-η^{\prime} meson mixing. In addition, the first evidence for the decay Bs0→ψ(2S)η′B^0_s \rightarrow ψ(2S) η^{\prime} is reported, and the relative branching fraction is measured, B(Bs0→ψ(2S)η′)B(Bs0→J/ψη′)=(38.7±9.0 (stat) ±1.3 (syst) ±0.9(B))×10−2,\frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow ψ(2S) η^{\prime})}{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime})} = (38.7\pm9.0\,(stat)\,\pm1.3\,(syst)\,\pm0.9(\mathcal{B}))\times10^{-2}, where the third uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of the branching fractions of J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(2S)ψ(2S)~mesons.

About the relative importance of compressional heating and current dissipation for the formation of coronal X-ray Bright Points

Context. The solar corona is heated to high temperatures of the order of 10^{6} K. The coronal energy budget and specifically possible mechanisms of coronal heating (wave, DC-electric fields, ..) are poorly understood. This is particularly true as far as the formation of X-ray bright points (BPs) is concerned. Aims. Investigation of the energy budget with emphasis on the relative role and contribution of adiabatic compression versus current dissipation to the formation of coronal BPs. Methods. Three-dimensional resistive MHD simulation starts with the extrapolation of the observed magnetic field from SOHO/MDI magnetograms, which are associated with a BP observed on 19 December 2006 by Hinode. The initial radially non-uniform plasma density and temperature distribution is in accordance with an equilibrium model of chromosphere and corona. The plasma motion is included in the model as a source of energy for coronal heating. Results. Investigation of the energy conversion due to Lorentz force, pressure gradient force and Ohmic current dissipation for this bright point shows the minor effect of Joule heating in comparison to the work done by pressure gradient force in increasing the thermal energy by adiabatic compression. Especially at the time when the temperature enhancement above the bright point starts to form, compressional effects are quite dominant over the direct Joule heating. Conclusions. Choosing non-realistic high resistivity in compressible MHD models for simulation of solar corona can lead to unphysical consequences for the energy balance analysis, especially when local thermal energy enhancements are being considered.
