Commuting integrable maps from a deformed D$_4$ cluster algebra

In this paper we revisit an integrable map of the plane which we obtained recently as a two-parameter family of deformed mutations in the cluster algebra of type D$_4$. The rational first integral for this map defines an invariant foliation of the plane by level curves, and we explain how this corresponds to a rational elliptic surface of rank 2. This leads us to construct another (independent) integrable map, commuting with the first, such that both maps lift to compositions of mutations in an enlarged cluster algebra, whose underlying quiver is equivalent to the one found by Okubo for the $q$-Painlevé VI equation. The degree growth of the two commuting maps is calculated in two different ways: firstly, from the tropical (max-plus) equations for the d-vectors of the cluster variables; and secondly, by constructing the minimal space of initial conditions for the two maps, via blowing up $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$.

Analogues of Kahan's method for higher order equations of higher degree

Kahan introduced an explicit method of discretization for systems of first order differential equations with nonlinearities of degree at most two (quadratic vector fields). Kahan's method has attracted much interest due to the fact that it preserves many of the geometrical properties of the original continuous system. In particular, a large number of Hamiltonian systems of quadratic vector fields are known for which their Kahan discretization is a discrete integrable system. In this note, we introduce a special class of explicit order-preserving discretization schemes that are appropriate for certain systems of ordinary differential equations of higher order and higher degree.

Algebraic entropy for algebraic maps

We propose an extension of the concept of algebraic entropy, as introduced by Bellon and Viallet for rational maps, to algebraic maps (or correspondences) of a certain kind. The corresponding entropy is an index of the complexity of the map. The definition inherits the basic properties from the definition of entropy for rational maps. We give an example with positive entropy, as well as two examples taken from the theory of Backlund transformations.

Generic hyperelliptic Prym varieties in a generalized Henon-Heiles system

It is known that the Jacobian of an algebraic curve which is a 2-fold covering of a hyperelliptic curve ramified at two points contains a hyperelliptic Prym variety. Its explicit algebraic description is applied to some of the integrable Henon-Heiles systems with a non-polynomial potential. Namely, we identify the generic complex invariant manifolds of the systems as a hyperelliptic Prym subvariety of the Jacobian of the spectral curve of the corresponding Lax representation. The exact discretization of the system is described as a translation on the Prym variety.

Integrability of reductions of the discrete KdV and potential KdV equations

We study the integrability of mappings obtained as reductions of the discrete Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and of two copies of the discrete potential Korteweg-de Vries equation (pKdV). We show that the mappings corresponding to the discrete KdV equation, which can be derived from the latter, are completely integrable in the Liouville-Arnold sense. The mappings associated with two copies of the pKdV equation are also shown to be integrable.

Properties of the series solution for Painleve I

We present some observations on the asymptotic behaviour of the coefficients in the Laurent series expansion of solutions of the first Painleve equation. For the general solution, explicit recursive formulae for the Taylor expansion of the tau-function around a zero are given, which are natural extensions of analogous formulae for the elliptic sigma function, as given by Weierstrass. Numerical and exact results on the symmetric solution which is singular at the origin are also presented.
