KK Higgs produced in association with a top quark pair in the bulk RS Model

We present a search strategy for the first Kaluza-Klein (KK) mode of the Higgs boson in the framework of the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model with a deformed metric. We study the production of this massive excitation in association with a ttbar pair at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The KK Higgs primarily decays into a boosted ttbar final state and we then end up with an interesting four-top final state of which two are boosted. The boosted products in the final state improve the sensitivity for the search of the KK Higgs in this channel whose production cross-section is otherwise rather small. Our results suggest that masses of the KK Higgs resonance upto about 1.2 TeV may be explorable at the highest planned luminosities of the LHC. Beyond this mass, the KK Higgs cross-section is too tiny for it to be explored at the LHC and may be possible only at a future higher energy collider.

Strength of Cu-TiN and Al-TiN interfaces from first-principles

Using density functional theory (DFT) based first principles calculations, we show that the preferred interfacial plane orientation relationship is determined by the strength of bonding at the interface. The thermodynamic stability, and the ideal tensile and shear strengths of Cu/TiN and Al/TiN interfaces are calculated. While there is a strong orientation relation (OR) preference for Al/TiN interface, there is no OR preference for Cu/TiN interface. Both the ideal tensile and shear strengths of Cu/TiN interfaces are lower than those of bulk Cu and TiN, suggesting such interfaces are weaker than their bulk components. By comparison, the ideal strengths of Al/TiN interface are comparable to the constituents in the bulk form. Such contrasting interfaces can be a test-bed for studying the role of interfaces in determining the mechanical behavior of the nanolayered structures.

Tuning the valley and chiral quantum state of Dirac electrons in van der Waals heterostructures

Chirality is a fundamental property of electrons with the relativistic spectrum found in graphene and topological insulators. It plays a crucial role in relativistic phenomena, such as Klein tunneling, but it is difficult to visualize directly. Here we report the direct observation and manipulation of chirality and pseudospin polarization in the tunneling of electrons between two almost perfectly aligned graphene crystals. We use a strong in-plane magnetic field as a tool to resolve the contributions of the chiral electronic states that have a phase difference between the two components of their vector wavefunction. Our experiments not only shed light on chirality, but also demonstrate a technique for preparing graphene's Dirac electrons in a particular quantum chiral state in a selected valley.

Phonon-assisted resonant tunneling of electrons in graphene-boron nitride transistors

We observe a series of sharp resonant features in the differential conductance of graphene-hexagonal boron nitride-graphene tunnel transistors over a wide range of bias voltages between $\sim$10 and 200 mV. We attribute them to electron tunneling assisted by the emission of phonons of well-defined energy. The bias voltages at which they occur are insensitive to the applied gate voltage and hence independent of the carrier densities in the graphene electrodes, so plasmonic effects can be ruled out. The phonon energies corresponding to the resonances are compared with the lattice dispersion curves of graphene-boron nitride heterostructures and are close to peaks in the single phonon density of states.

A Derivation of the Correct Treatment of 1/(eta.k)^p Singularities in Axial Gauges

We use the earlier results on the correlations of axial gauge Green's functions and the Lorentz gauge Green's functions obtained via finite field-dependent BRS transformations to study the question of the correct treatment of 1/(eta\cdot k)^p- type singularities in the axial gauge boson propagator. We show how the known treatment of the 1/(k^2)^n-type singularity in the Lorentz-type gauges can be used to write down the axial propagator via field transformation. We examine the singularity structure of the latter and find that the axial propagator so constructed has $no$ spurious poles, but a complex structure near $η\cdot k=0$.

Spin-Reversal Transition in Ising Model under Pulsed Field

In this communication we report the existence of a dynamic ``spin-reversal'' transition in an Ising system perturbed by a pulsed external magnetic field. The transition is achieved by tuning the strength ($h_p$) and/or the duration ($Δt$) of the pulse which is applied in a direction opposite to the existing order. We have studied this transition in the kinetic Ising Model in two dimension using Monte Carlo technique, and solved numerically the mean field equation of motion. The transition is essentially dynamic in nature and it takes the system from one ordered equilibrium phase to another by means of the growth of opposite spin domains (in the kinetic Ising case) induced during the period when the pulsed field is applied.
