Ageing studies of Multi-Strip Multi-Gap Resistive Plate Counters based on low resistivity glass electrodes in high irradiation dose

Detailed tests and analysis of ageing effects of high irradiation dose on Multi-Strip Multi-Gap Resistive Plate Counters based on low resistivity glass electrodes were performed. MSMGRPC efficiency and cluster size before irradiation are measured and compared with their values after irradiation in a high irradiation dose accessed at a multi-purpose irradiation facility of IFIN-HH based on $^{60}$Co source. The composition and properties of the deposited layers on the glass electrodes, studied based on a multitude of analysis methods, i.e. SEM, XPS, foil-ERDA, RBS, AFM and THz-TDS, are presented.

Numerical simulations of transverse oscillations in radiatively cooling coronal loops

We aim to study the influence of radiative cooling on the standing kink oscillations of a coronal loop. Using the FLASH code, we solved the 3D ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations. Our model consists of a straight, density enhanced and gravitationally stratified magnetic flux tube. We perturbed the system initially, leading to a transverse oscillation of the structure, and followed its evolution for a number of periods. A realistic radiative cooling is implemented. Results are compared to available analytical theory. We find that in the linear regime (i.e. low amplitude perturbation and slow cooling) the obtained period and damping time are in good agreement with theory. The cooling leads to an amplification of the oscillation amplitude. However, the difference between the cooling and non-cooling cases is small (around 6% after 6 oscillations). In high amplitude runs with realistic cooling, instabilities deform the loop, leading to increased damping. In this case, the difference between cooling and non-cooling is still negligible at around 12%. A set of simulations with higher density loops are also performed, to explore what happens when the cooling takes place in a very short time (tcool = 100 s). We strengthen the results of previous analytical studies that state that the amplification due to cooling is ineffective, and its influence on the oscillation characteristics is small, at least for the cases shown here. Furthermore, the presence of a relatively strong damping in the high amplitude runs even in the fast cooling case indicates that it is unlikely that cooling could alone account for the observed, flare-related undamped oscillations of coronal loops. These results may be significant in the field of coronal seismology, allowing its application to coronal loop oscillations with observed fading-out or cooling behaviour.

New statistical results on the optical IDV data of BL Lac S5 0716+714

This paper reports on the statistical behaviour of the optical IntraDay Variability of BL Lac S5 0716+714. Available IntraDay Variability data in the optical is tested to see whether or not the magnitude is log-normally distributed. It was consistently found that this is not the case. This is in agreement with a previous discussion for data for the same object but in a different observational period. Simultaneously, the spectral slope of the light curves is calculated. The implications of these findings for models which discuss both the location and the source of IntraDay Variability are presented.

Power Spectral Distribution of the BL Lac Object S5 0716+714

Observational data in the BVRI bands of the variable BL Lacertae Object S5 0716+714 is discussed from the point of view of its Power Spectral Distribution (PSD). A model of the type $P(f) = βf^{-1} [1 + (\frac{f} δ) ^{α-1}]^{-1} + γ$ is fitted to the data for four null hypothesis and the Bayesian $p$ parameter for the fits is calculated. Spectral slopes with values ranging from 1.083 to 2.65 are obtained, with medium values for each band of $\barα_B =2.028$, $\barα_V = 1.809$, $\barα_R = 1.932$ and $\barα_I = 1.54$ respectively. These values confirm conclusions of previous studies, namely that the source is turbulent. Two disk models, the standard prescription of the Shakura-Sunyaev disk and magnetized disks exhibiting MagnetoRotational Instability, were discussed. We found that it is unlikely that they explain this set of observational data.
