Artificial Intelligence for Imaging Cherenkov Detectors at the EIC

Imaging Cherenkov detectors form the backbone of particle identification (PID) at the future Electron Ion Collider (EIC). Currently all the designs for the first EIC detector proposal use a dual Ring Imaging CHerenkov (dRICH) detector in the hadron endcap, a Detector for Internally Reflected Cherenkov (DIRC) light in the barrel, and a modular RICH (mRICH) in the electron endcap. These detectors involve optical processes with many photons that need to be tracked through complex surfaces at the simulation level, while for reconstruction they rely on pattern recognition of ring images. This proceeding summarizes ongoing efforts and possible applications of AI for imaging Cherenkov detectors at EIC. In particular we will provide the example of the dRICH for the AI-assisted design and of the DIRC for simulation and particle identification from complex patterns and discuss possible advantages of using AI.

Measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements in $Λ(1520)$ Photoproduction at 8.2-8.8 GeV

We report on the measurement of spin density matrix elements of the $Λ(1520)$ in the photoproduction reaction $γp\rightarrow Λ(1520)K^+$, via its subsequent decay to $K^{-}p$. The measurement was performed as part of the GlueX experimental program in Hall D at Jefferson Lab using a linearly polarized photon beam with $E_γ=$ 8.2-8.8 GeV. These are the first such measurements in this photon energy range. Results are presented in bins of momentum transfer squared, $-(t-t_\text{0})$. We compare the results with a Reggeon exchange model and determine that natural exchange amplitudes are dominant in $Λ(1520)$ photoproduction.

Search for photoproduction of axion-like particles at GlueX

We present a search for axion-like particles, $a$, produced in photon-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of approximately 4 GeV, focusing on the scenario where the $a$-gluon coupling is dominant. The search uses $a\toγγ$ and $a\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decays, and a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 168 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the GlueX detector. The search for $a\toγγ$ decays is performed in the mass range of $180 < m_a < 480$ MeV, while the search for $a\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decays explores the $600 < m_a < 720$ MeV region. No evidence for a signal is found, and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the $a$-gluon coupling strength. These constraints are the most stringent to date over much of the mass ranges considered.

Uncertainty And Evolutionary Optimization: A Novel Approach

Evolutionary algorithms (EA) have been widely accepted as efficient solvers for complex real world optimization problems, including engineering optimization. However, real world optimization problems often involve uncertain environment including noisy and/or dynamic environments, which pose major challenges to EA-based optimization. The presence of noise interferes with the evaluation and the selection process of EA, and thus adversely affects its performance. In addition, as presence of noise poses challenges to the evaluation of the fitness function, it may need to be estimated instead of being evaluated. Several existing approaches attempt to address this problem, such as introduction of diversity (hyper mutation, random immigrants, special operators) or incorporation of memory of the past (diploidy, case based memory). However, these approaches fail to adequately address the problem. In this paper we propose a Distributed Population Switching Evolutionary Algorithm (DPSEA) method that addresses optimization of functions with noisy fitness using a distributed population switching architecture, to simulate a distributed self-adaptive memory of the solution space. Local regression is used in the pseudo-populations to estimate the fitness. Successful applications to benchmark test problems ascertain the proposed method's superior performance in terms of both robustness and accuracy.

A Survey of Different Residential Energy Consumption Controlling Techniques for Autonomous DSM in Future Smart Grid Communications

In this work, we present a survey of residential load controlling techniques to implement demand side management in future smart grid. Power generation sector facing important challenges both in quality and quantity to meet the increasing requirements of consumers. Energy efficiency, reliability, economics and integration of new energy resources are important issues to enhance the stability of power system infrastructure. Optimal energy consumption scheduling minimizes the energy consumption cost and reduce the peak-to-average ratio (PAR) as well as peak load demand in peak hours. In this work, we discuss different energy consumption scheduling schemes that schedule the household appliances in real-time to achieve minimum energy consumption cost and reduce peak load curve in peak hours to shape the peak load demand.

A Survey of Home Energy Management Systems in Future Smart Grid Communications

In this paper we present a systematic review of various home energy management (HEM) schemes. Employment of home energy management programs will make the electricity consumption smarter and more efficient. Advantages of HEM include, increased savings for consumers as well as utilities, reduced peak to average ratio (PAR) and peak demand. Where there are numerous applications of smart grid technologies, home energy management is probably the most important one to be addressed. Utilities across the globe have taken various steps for efficient consumption of electricity. New pricing schemes like, Real Time Pricing (RTP), Time of Use (ToU), Inclining Block Rates (IBR), Critical Peak Pricing (CPP) etc, have been proposed for smart grid. Distributed Energy Resources (DER) (local generation) and/or home appliances coordination along with different tariff schemes lead towards efficient consumption of electricity. This work also discusses a HEM systems general architecture and various challenges in implementation of this architecture in smart grid.

Circular dichroism of magneto-phonon resonance in doped graphene

Polarization resolved, Raman scattering response due to E$_{2g}$ phonon in monolayer graphene has been investigated in magnetic fields up to 29 T. The hybridization of the E$_{2g}$ phonon with only the fundamental inter Landau level excitation (involving the n=0 Landau level) is observed and only in one of the two configurations of the circularly crossed polarized excitation and scattered light. This polarization anisotropy of the magneto-phonon resonance is shown to be inherent to relatively strongly doped graphene samples, with carrier concentration typical for graphene deposited on SiO$_2$.

We highlight the features of MAC protocols along with their advantages and limitations in context of WBASNs. Comparison of Low Power Listening (LPL), Scheduled Contention and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) is also elaborated. MAC protocols with respect to different approaches and techniques which are used for energy minimization, traffic control mechanisms for collision avoidance are discussed. We also present a survey of path loss models for In-body, On-body and Off-body communications in WBASNs and analytically discuss that path loss is maximum in In-body communication because of low energy levels to take care of tissues and organs located inside the body. Survey of Power model for WBANs of CSMA/CA and beacon mode is also presented.

Minimizing Electricity Theft using Smart Meters in AMI

Global energy crises are increasing every moment. Every one has the attention towards more and more energy production and also trying to save it. Electricity can be produced through many ways which is then synchronized on a main grid for usage. The main issue for which we have written this survey paper is losses in electrical system. Weather these losses are technical or non-technical. Technical losses can be calculated easily, as we discussed in section of mathematical modeling that how to calculate technical losses. Where as nontechnical losses can be evaluated if technical losses are known. Theft in electricity produce non-technical losses. To reduce or control theft one can save his economic resources. Smart meter can be the best option to minimize electricity theft, because of its high security, best efficiency, and excellent resistance towards many of theft ideas in electromechanical meters. So in this paper we have mostly concentrated on theft issues.

Monitoring and Controlling Power using Zigbee Communications

Smart grid is a modified form of electrical grid where generation, transmission, distribution and customers are not only connected electrically but also through strong communication network with each other as well as with market, operation and service provider. For achieving good communication link among them, it is very necessary to find suitable protocol. In this paper, we discuss different hardware techniques for power monitoring, power management and remote power controlling at home and transmission side and also discuss the suitability of Zigbee for required communication link. Zigbee has major role in monitoring and direct load controlling for efficient power utilization. It covers enough area needed for communication and it works on low data rate of 20Kbps to 250Kbps with minimum power consumption. This paper describes the user friendly control home appliances, power on/off through the internet, PDA using Graphical User Interface (GUI) and through GSM cellular mobile phone.

Probing the band structure of quadri-layer graphene with magneto-phonon resonance

We show how the magneto-phonon resonance, particularly pronounced in sp2 carbon allotropes, can be used as a tool to probe the band structure of multilayer graphene specimens. Even when electronic excitations cannot be directly observed, their coupling to the E2g phonon leads to pronounced oscillations of the phonon feature observed through Raman scattering experiments with multiple periods and amplitudes detemined by the electronic excitation spectrum. Such experiment and analysis have been performed up to 28T on an exfoliated 4-layer graphene specimen deposited on SiO2, and the observed oscillations correspond to the specific AB stacked 4-layer graphene electronic excitation spectrum.

Quasiparticle scattering off phase boundaries in epitaxial graphene

We investigate the electronic structure of terraces of single layer graphene (SLG) by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) on samples grown by thermal decomposition of 6H-SiC(0001) crystals in ultra-high vacuum. We focus on the perturbations of the local density of states (LDOS) in the vicinity of edges of SLG terraces. Armchair edges are found to favour intervalley quasiparticle scattering, leading to the (\surd3\times\surd3)R30° LDOS superstructure already reported for graphite edges and more recently for SLG on SiC(0001). Using Fourier transform of LDOS images, we demonstrate that the intrinsic doping of SLG is responsible for a LDOS pattern at the Fermi energy which is more complex than for neutral graphene or graphite, since it combines local (\surd3\times\surd3)R30° superstructure and long range beating modulation. Although these features were already reported by Yang et al. Nanoletters 10, 943 (2010), we propose here an alternative interpretation based on simple arguments classically used to describe standing wave patterns in standard two-dimensional systems. Finally, we discuss the absence of intervalley scattering off other typical boundaries: zig-zag edges and SLG/bilayer graphene junctions.

On the energetic balance for the flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid induced by a constantly accelerating plate

Exact and approximate expressions are established for dissipation, the power of the shear stress at the wall and the boundary layer thickness corresponding to the motion of an Oldroyd-B fluid induced by a constantly accelerating plate. The similar expressions for Maxwell, Newtonian and second grade fluids, performing the same motion, are obtained as limiting cases of our general results. The specific features of the four models are emphasized by means of the asymptotic approximations.
