Low-Temperature Dielectric Anomalies at the Mott Insulator-Metal Transition

The correlation-driven Mott transition is commonly characterized by a drop in resistivity across the insulator-metal phase boundary; yet, the complex permittivity provides a deeper insight into the microscopic nature. We investigate the frequency- and temperature-dependent dielectric response of the Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$-Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ when tuning from a quantum spin liquid into the Fermi-liquid state by applying external pressure and chemical substitution of the donor molecules. At low temperatures the coexistence region at the first-order transition leads to a strong enhancement of the quasi-static dielectric constant $ε_1$ when the effective correlations are tuned through the critical value. Several dynamical regimes are identified around the Mott point and vividly mapped through pronounced permittivity crossovers. All experimental trends are captured by dynamical mean-field theory of the single-band Hubbard model supplemented by percolation theory.

Anions effects on the electronic structure and electrodynamic properties of the Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Ag$_2$(CN)$_{3}$

The Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Ag$_2$(CN)$_3$ forms a highly-frustrated triangular lattice of $S=1/2$ dimers with a possible quantum-spin-liquid state. Our experimental and numerical studies reveal the emergence of a slight charge imbalance between crystallographically inequivalent sites, relaxor dielectric response and hopping dc transport. In a broader perspective we conclude that the universal properties of strongly-correlated charge-transfer salts with spin liquid state are an anion-supported valence band and cyanide-induced quasi-degenerate electronic configurations in the relaxed state. The generic low-energy excitations are caused by charged domain walls rather than by fluctuating electric dipoles. They give rise to glassy dynamics characteristic of dimerized Mott insulators, including the sibling compound $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$.

Electronic Scattering Effects in Europium-Based Iron Pnictides

In a comprehensive study, we investigate the electronic scattering effects in EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. In spite of the fact that Eu$^{2+}$ local moments order around $T_\text{Eu} \approx 20$\,K, the overall optical response is strikingly similar to the one of the well-known Ba-122 pnictides. The main difference lies within the suppression of the lower spin-density-wave gap feature. By analysing our spectra with a multi-component model, we find that the high-energy feature around 0.7\,eV -- often associated with Hund's rule coupling -- is highly sensitive to the spin-density-wave ordering, this further confirms its direct relationship to the dynamics of itinerant carriers. The same model is also used to investigate the in-plane anisotropy of magnetically detwinned EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ in the antiferromagnetically ordered state, yielding a higher Drude weight and lower scattering rate along the crystallographic $a$-axis. Finally, we analyse the development of the room temperature spectra with isovalent phosphor substitution and highlight changes in the scattering rate of hole-like carriers induced by a Lifshitz transition.

Interband optical conductivity of the [001]-oriented Dirac semimetal Cd3As2

We measured the optical reflectivity of [001]-oriented $n$-doped Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ in a broad frequency range (50 - 22000 cm$^{-1}$) for temperatures from 10 to 300 K. The optical conductivity, $σ(ω) = σ_{1}(ω) + {\rm i}σ_{2}(ω)$, is isotropic within the (001) plane; its real part follows a power law, $σ_{1}(ω) \propto ω^{1.65}$, in a large interval from 2000 to 8000 cm$^{-1}$. This behavior is caused by interband transitions between two Dirac bands, which are effectively described by a sublinear dispersion relation, $E(k) \propto \lvert k \rvert ^{0.6}$. The momentum-averaged Fermi velocity of the carriers in these bands is energy dependent and ranges from $1.2 \times 10^{5}$ to $3 \times 10^{5}$ m/s, depending on the distance from the Dirac points. We detect a gaplike feature in $σ_{1}(ω)$ and associate it with the Fermi level positioned around $100$ meV above the Dirac points.
