Erosion of a granular bed driven by laminar fluid flow

Motivated by examples of erosive incision of channels in sand, we investigate the motion of individual grains in a granular bed driven by a laminar fluid to give us new insights into the relationship between hydrodynamic stress and surface granular flow. A closed cell of rectangular cross-section is partially filled with glass beads and a constant fluid flux $Q$ flows through the cell. The refractive indices of the fluid and the glass beads are matched and the cell is illuminated with a laser sheet, allowing us to image individual beads. The bed erodes to a rest height $h_r$ which depends on $Q$. The Shields threshold criterion assumes that the non-dimensional ratio $θ$ of the viscous stress on the bed to the hydrostatic pressure difference across a grain is sufficient to predict the granular flux. Furthermore, the Shields criterion states that the granular flux is non-zero only for $θ>θ_c$. We find that the Shields criterion describes the observed relationship $h_r \propto Q^{1/2}$ when the bed height is offset by approximately half a grain diameter. Introducing this offset in the estimation of $θ$ yields a collapse of the measured Einstein number $q^*$ to a power-law function of $θ- θ_c$ with exponent $1.75 \pm 0.25$. The dynamics of the bed height relaxation are well described by the power law relationship between the granular flux and the bed stress.

Dynamics of a bouncing dimer

We investigate the dynamics of a dimer bouncing on a vertically oscillated plate. The dimer, composed of two spheres rigidly connected by a light rod, exhibits several modes depending on initial and driving conditions. The first excited mode has a novel horizontal drift in which one end of the dimer stays on the plate during most of the cycle, while the other end bounces in phase with the plate. The speed and direction of the drift depend on the aspect ratio of the dimer. We employ event-driven simulations based on a detailed treatment of frictional interactions between the dimer and the plate in order to elucidate the nature of the transport mechanism in the drift mode.

Experimental studies of Chaos and Localization in Quantum Wavefunctions

Wavefunctions in chaotic and disordered quantum billiards are studied experimentally using thin microwave cavities. The chaotic wavefunctions display universal density distributions and density auto-correlations in agreement with expressions derived fro m a 0-D nonlinear $σ$-model of supersymmetry, which coincides with Random Matrix Theory. In contrast, disordered wavefunctions show deviations from this universal behavior due to Anderson localization. A systematic behavior of the distribution function is studied as a function of the localization length, and can be understood in the framework of a 1-D version of the nonlinear $σ$-model.
