Three quark currents and baryon spin

We show that three-quark axial currents as required by broken SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry reduce the quark spin contribution to proton spin from $Σ_p = 1$ (one-quark axial current value) to $Σ_p = 0.41(12)$ consistent with the empirical value $Σ_{p, exp} = 0.33(08)$. In the case of the $Δ^+(1232)$ baryon, we find that three-quark axial currents increase the one-quark axial current value $Σ_{Δ^+} = 3$ to $Σ_{Δ^+} = 3.87(22)$. We also calculate the quark orbital angular momenta $L_u$ and $L_d$ in the proton and $Δ^+$ and interpret our results in terms of the prolate and oblate geometric shapes of these baryons consistent with their intrinsic quadrupole moments.

Spin of ground state baryons

We calculate the quark spin contribution to the total angular momentum of flavor octet and flavor decuplet ground state baryons using a spin-flavor symmetry based parametrization method of quantum chromodynamics. We find that third order SU(6) symmetry breaking three-quark operators are necessary to explain the experimental result Sigma_1=0.32(10). For spin 3/2 decuplet baryons we predict that the quark spin contribution is Sigma_3=3.93(22), i.e. considerably larger than their total angular momentum.

Axial $N\to Δ(1232)$ and $N \to N^{\star}(1440)$ transition form factors

We calculate the axial $N\to Δ(1232)$ and $N\to N^{\star}(1440)$ transition form factors in a chiral constituent quark model. As required by the partial conservation of axial current ($PCAC$) condition, we include one- and two-body axial exchange currents. For the axial $N\to Δ(1232)$ form factors we compare with previous quark model calculations that use only one-body axial currents, and with experimental analyses. The paper provides the first calculation of all weak axial $N\to N^{\star}(1440)$ form factors. Our main result is that exchange currents are very important for certain axial transition form factors. In addition to improving our understanding of nucleon structure, the present results are relevant for neutrino-nucleus scattering cross section predictions needed in the analysis of neutrino mixing experiments.

Charge form factors and nucleon shape

To obtain further information on the geometric shape of the nucleon, the proton charge form factor is decomposed into two terms, which are connected respectively with a spherically symmetric and an intrinsic quadrupole part of the proton's charge density. Quark model relations are employed to derive expressions for both terms. In particular, the proton's intrinsic quadrupole form factor is obtained from a relation between the N -> Delta and neutron charge form factors. The proposed decomposition shows that the neutron charge form factor is an observable manifestation of an intrinsic quadrupole form factor of the nucleon. Furthermore, it affords an interpretation of recent electron-nucleon scattering data in terms of a nonspherical distribution of quark-antiquark pairs in the nucleon.

Pionic decay of a possible d'-dibaryon and the short-range NN interaction

We study the pionic decay of a possible dibaryon d' --> N N πin the microscopic quark shell model. The initial d' dibaryon wave function (J^P=0^-, T=0) consists of one 1\hbarωsix-quark shell-model s^5p[51]_X configuration. The most important final six-quark configurations s^6[6]_X, s^4p^2[42]_X and (s^4p^2-s^52s)[6]_X are properly projected onto the NN channel. The final state NN interaction is investigated by means of two phase-equivalent - but off-shell different - potential models. We demonstrate that the decay width Γ_d' depends strongly on the short-range behavior of the NN wave function. In addition, the width Γ_d' is very sensitive to the mass and size of the d' dibaryon. For dibaryon masses slightly above the experimentally suggested value M_d'=2.065 GeV, we obtain a pionic decay width of Γ_d' = 0.18 - 0.32 MeV close to the experimental value Γ_d' = 0.5 MeV.

Electromagnetic Properties of the Delta(1232)

We calculate the electromagnetic moments and radii of the Delta(1232) in the nonrelativistic quark model, including two-body exchange currents. We show that two-body exchange currents lead to nonvanishing Delta and N-->Delta transition quadrupole moments even if the wave functions have no D-state admixture. The usual explanation based on the single-quark transition model involves D-state admixtures but no exchange currents. We derive a parameter- free relation between the N-->Delta transition quadrupole moment and the neutron charge radius: Q(N-->Delta) = r^2(neutron)/sqrt(2). Furthermore, we calculate the M1 and E2 amplitudes for the process photon + N -->Delta. We find that the E2 amplitude receives sizeable contributions from exchange currents. These are more important than the ones which result from D-state admixtures due to tensor forces between quarks if a reasonable quark core radius of about 0.6 fm is used. We obtain a ratio of E2/M1=-3.5%.

Constituent Quark Model Calculation for a possible J^P=0^-,T=0 Dibaryon

There exists experimental evidence that a dibaryon resonance d' with quantum numbers J^P=0^-,T=0 and mass 2065 MeV could be the origin of the narrow peak in the (π^+ ,π^- ) double charge exchange cross--sections on nuclei. We investigate the six--quark system with these quantum--numbers within the constituent quark model, with linear confinement, effective one--gluon exchange at short range and chiral interactions between quarks (πand σexchange). We classify all possible six quark states with J^P=0^-,T=0, and with N=1 and N=3 harmonic oscillator excitations, using different reduction chains. The six--quark Hamiltonian is diagonalized in the basis including the unique N=1 state and the 10 most important states from the N=3 shell. We find, that with most of the possible sets of parameters, the mass of such a "dibaryon" lies above the N(939)+N^\ast(1535) threshold. The only possibility to describe the supposed d'(2065) in the present context is to reduce the confinement strength to very small values, however at the expense of describing the negative parity resonances N^\ast. We also analyze the J^P=0^-,T=2,N=1 six--quark state.
