Josephson oscillations of edge solitons in a photonic-topological coupler

We introduce a scheme of a photonic coupler built of two parallel topological-insulator slab waveguides with the intrinsic Kerr nonlinearity, separated by a gap. Josephson oscillations (JO) of a single edge soliton created in one slab, and of a pair of solitons created in two slabs, are considered. The single soliton jumping between the slabs is subject to quick radiative decay. On the other hand, the JO of the copropagating soliton pair may be essentially more robust, as one soliton can absorb dispersive waves emitted by the other. The most robust JO regime is featured by the pair of solitons with phase shift $π$ between them.

Phase slips driven by acoustic waves in Bose-Einstein condensates with ring topology

Rotational superradiance is one of the most fascinating phenomena in black-hole physics. Here, with the aim of probing quantum properties of superradiance in the lab, we investigate the interaction of the acoustic waves with quantum vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in the framework of dissipative mean-field model. We find the conditions of the acoustic-induced quantum phase slips in condensates with ring topology and discuss the possibility of observing an acoustic analogue of quantum superradiance in ultracold atomic gases.

Stable Hopf solitons in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

We reveal that Hopf solitons can be stabilized in rotating atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The Hopfion is a matter-wave vortex complex which carries two independent winding numbers. Such a topological solitonic structure results from a superfluid flow of atoms simultaneously quantized in poloidal and toroidal directions. In the framework of a dissipative mean-field model we observe different unstable evolution scenarios of the Hopfions. We demonstrate energetic and dynamical stability of the Hopf solitons under experimentally feasible conditions.

Generation and decay of persistent current in a toroidal Bose-Einstein condensate

Persistent current, or "flow without friction", as well as quantum vortices are the hallmarks of superfluidity. Recently a very long-lived persistent flow of atoms has been experimentally observed in Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a ring-shaped potential. This enables fundamental studies of superfluidity and may lead to applications in high-precision metrology and atomtronics. We overview our recent theoretical studies of the generation of the persistent current in a stirred toroidal atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, and discuss our new investigation of the hysteresis in the atomtronic circuit.

Vortex excitation in a stirred toroidal Bose-Einstein condensate

Motivated by the recent experiment [Wright et al., Phys. Rev. A 88, 063633 (2013)], we investigate formation of vortices in an annular BEC stirred by a narrow blue-detuned optical beam. In the framework of a two-dimensional mean field model, we study the dissipative dynamics of the condensate with parameters matched to the experimental conditions. Vortex-antivortex pairs appear near the center of the stirrer in the bulk of the condensate for slow motion of the stirring beam. When the barrier angular velocity is above some critical value, an outer edge surface mode develops and breaks into the vortices entering the condensate annulus. We determine the conditions for creation of the vortex excitations in the stirred toroidal condensate and compare our results with the experimental observations.

Vortices in a toroidal Bose-Einstein condensate with a rotating weak link

Motivated by a recent experiment [K.C. Wright et. al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 025302 (2013)], we investigate deterministic discontinuous jumps between quantized circulation states in a toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. These phase slips are induced by vortex excitations created by a rotating weak link. We analyze influence of a localized condensate density depletion and atomic superflows, governed by the rotating barrier, on the energetic and dynamical stability of the vortices in the ring-shaped condensate. We simulate in a three-dimensional dissipative mean field model the dynamics of the condensate using parameters similar to the experimental conditions. Moreover, we consider the dynamics of the stirred condensate far beyond the experimentally explored region and reveal surprising manifestations of complex vortex dynamics.

Optical tweezers for vortex rings in Bose-Einstein condensates

We study formation and stabilization of vortex rings in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. We suggest a novel approach for generating and trapping of vortex rings by 'optical tweezers'--two blue-detuned optical beams forming a toroidal void in the bulk of a magnetically or optically confined condensate cloud. We demonstrate that matter-wave vortex rings trapped within the void are energetically and dynamically stable. Our theoretical findings suggest the possibility for generation, stabilization, and nondestructive manipulation of quantized vortex rings in experimentally feasible trapping configurations.

Stability of persistent currents in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Motivated by a recent experiment [S. Beattie, S. Moulder, R. J. Fletcher, and Z. Hadzibabic, PRL 110, 025301 (2013)] we study the superflow of atomic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates optically trapped in a ring-shaped geometry. Within a dissipative mean-field approach we simulate a two-component condensate in conditions adapted to the experiment. In qualitative agreement with the experimental findings, we observe persistent currents, if the spin-population imbalance is above some well-defined `critical' value. The triply charged vortices decay in quantized steps. The vortex lines escape from the center of the ring through dynamically created regions in the condensate annulus with reduced density of one component filled by atoms of the other component. The vortices then leave the ring-shaped high density region of the condensate and finally decay into elementary excitations.

Stable bright solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Two-dimensional (2D) fundamental soliton-soliton pairs are investigated in binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions between atoms of the same type. Both attractive and repulsive interactions between atoms of different type are considered. The general properties of the stationary states are investigated variationally and numerically, and the stability regions of the soliton-soliton pairs are determined.

Two-dimensional nonlinear vector states in Bose-Einstein condensates

Two-dimensional (2D) vector matter waves in the form of soliton-vortex and vortex-vortex pairs are investigated for the case of attractive intracomponent interaction in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. Both attractive and repulsive intercomponent interactions are considered. By means of a linear stability analysis we show that soliton-vortex pairs can be stable in some regions of parameters while vortex-vortex pairs turn out to be always unstable. The results are confirmed by direct numerical simulations of the 2D coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations.

Excitation of zonal flow by the modulational instability in electron temperature gradient driven turbulence

The generation of large-scale zonal flows by small-scale electrostatic drift waves in electron temperature gradient(ETG) driven turbulence model is considered. The generation mechanism is based on the modulational instability of a finite amplitude monochromatic drift wave. The threshold and growth rate of the instability as well as the optimal spatial scale of zonal flow are obtained.

Dynamics of two-dimensional coherent structures in nonlocal nonlinear media

We study stability and dynamics of the single cylindrically symmetric solitary structures and dipolar solitonic molecules in spatially nonlocal media. The main properties of the solitons, vortex solitons, and dipolar solitons are investigated analytically and numerically. The vortices and higher-order solitons show the transverse symmetry-breaking azimuthal instability below some critical power. We find the threshold of the vortex soliton stabilization using the linear stability analysis and direct numerical simulations. The higher-order solitons, which have a central peak and one or more surrounding rings, are also demonstrated to be stabilized in nonlocal nonlinear media. Using direct numerical simulations, we find a class of radially asymmetric, dipole-like solitons and show that, at sufficiently high power, these structures are stable.
