Casimir elements and Sugawara operators for Takiff algebras

For every simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ we consider the associated Takiff algebra $\mathfrak{g}^{}_{\ell}$ defined as the truncated polynomial current Lie algebra with coefficients in $\mathfrak{g}$. We use a matrix presentation of $\mathfrak{g}^{}_{\ell}$ to give a uniform construction of algebraically independent generators of the center of the universal enveloping algebra ${\rm U}(\mathfrak{g}^{}_{\ell})$. A similar matrix presentation for the affine Kac--Moody algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}^{}_{\ell}$ is then used to prove an analogue of the Feigin--Frenkel theorem describing the center of the corresponding affine vertex algebra at the critical level. The proof relies on an explicit construction of a complete set of Segal--Sugawara vectors for the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}^{}_{\ell}$.

Odd reflections in the Yangian associated with ${\frak gl}(m|n)$

The odd reflections are an effective tool in the Lie superalgebra representation theory, as they relate non-conjugate Borel subalgebras. We introduce analogues of the odd reflections for the Yangian ${\rm Y}({\frak gl}_{m|n})$ and use them to produce a transition rule for the parameters of the highest weight modules corresponding to a change of the parity sequence. This leads to a description of the finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the Yangian associated with an arbitrary parity sequence.

$W$-algebras associated with centralizers in type $A$

We introduce a new family of affine $W$-algebras associated with the centralizers of arbitrary nilpotent elements in $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. We define them by using a version of the BRST complex of the quantum Drinfeld--Sokolov reduction. A family of free generators of the new algebras is produced in an explicit form. We also give an analogue of the Fateev--Lukyanov realization for these algebras by applying a Miura-type map.

Center at the critical level for centralizers in type $A$

We consider the affine vertex algebra at the critical level associated with the centralizer of a nilpotent element in the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. Due to a recent result of Arakawa and Premet, the center of this vertex algebra is an algebra of polynomials. We construct a family of free generators of the center in an explicit form. As a corollary, we obtain generators of the corresponding quantum shift of argument subalgebras and recover free generators of the center of the universal enveloping algebra of the centralizer produced earlier by Brown and Brundan.

Classical $\mathcal{W}$-algebras for centralizers

We introduce a new family of Poisson vertex algebras $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{a})$ analogous to the classical $\mathcal{W}$-algebras. The algebra $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{a})$ is associated with the centralizer $\mathfrak{a}$ of an arbitrary nilpotent element in $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. We show that $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{a})$ is an algebra of polynomials in infinitely many variables and produce its free generators in an explicit form. This implies that $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{a})$ is isomorphic to the center at the critical level of the affine vertex algebra associated with $\mathfrak{a}$.

Segal-Sugawara vectors for the Lie algebra of type $G_2$

Explicit formulas for Segal-Sugawara vectors associated with the simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of type $G_2$ are found by using computer-assisted calculations. This leads to a direct proof of the Feigin-Frenkel theorem describing the center of the corresponding affine vertex algebra at the critical level. As an application, we give an explicit solution of Vinberg's quantization problem by providing formulas for generators of maximal commutative subalgebras of $U(\mathfrak{g})$. We also calculate the eigenvalues of the Hamiltonians on the Bethe vectors in the Gaudin model associated with $\mathfrak{g}$.

Invariants of the vacuum module associated with the Lie superalgebra gl(1|1)

We describe the algebra of invariants of the vacuum module associated with the affinization of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$. We give a formula for its Hilbert--Poincaré series in a fermionic (cancellation-free) form which turns out to coincide with the generating function of the plane partitions over the $(1,1)$-hook. Our arguments are based on a super version of the Beilinson--Drinfeld--Raïs--Tauvel theorem which we prove by producing an explicit basis of invariants of the symmetric algebra of polynomial currents associated with $\mathfrak{gl}(1|1)$. We identify the invariants with affine supersymmetric polynomials via a version of the Chevalley theorem.

Classical W-algebras in types A, B, C, D and G

We produce explicit generators of the classical W-algebras associated with the principal nilpotents in the simple Lie algebras of all classical types and in the exceptional Lie algebra of type $G_2$. The generators are given by determinant formulas in the context of the Poisson vertex algebras. We also show that the images of the W-algebra generators under the Chevalley-type isomorphism coincide with the elements defined via the corresponding Miura transformations.

The MacMahon Master Theorem for right quantum superalgebras and higher Sugawara operators for $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(m|n)$

We prove an analogue of the MacMahon Master Theorem for the right quantum superalgebras. In particular, we obtain a new and simple proof of this theorem for the right quantum algebras. In the super case the theorem is then used to construct higher order Sugawara operators for the affine Lie superalgebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(m|n)$ in an explicit form. The operators are elements of a completed universal enveloping algebra of $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(m|n)$ at the critical level. They occur as the coefficients in the expansion of a noncommutative Berezinian and as the traces of powers of generator matrices. The same construction yields higher Hamiltonians for the Gaudin model associated with the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$. We also use the Sugawara operators to produce algebraically independent generators of the algebra of singular vectors of any generic Verma module at the critical level over the affine Lie superalgebra.

Casimir elements from the Brauer-Schur-Weyl duality

We consider Casimir elements for the orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras constructed with the use of the Brauer algebra. We calculate the images of these elements under the Harish-Chandra isomorphism and thus show that they (together with the Pfaffian-type element in the even orthogonal case) are algebraically independent generators of the centers of the corresponding universal enveloping algebras.

Characteristic maps for the Brauer algebra

The classical characteristic map associates symmetric functions to characters of the symmetric groups. There are two natural analogues of this map involving the Brauer algebra. The first of them relies on the action of the orthogonal or symplectic group on a space of tensors, while the second is provided by the action of this group on the symmetric algebra of the corresponding Lie algebra. We consider the second characteristic map both in the orthogonal and symplectic case, and calculate the images of central idempotents of the Brauer algebra in terms of the Schur polynomials. The calculation is based on the Okounkov--Olshanski binomial formula for the classical Lie groups. We also reproduce the hook dimension formulas for representations of the classical groups by deriving them from the properties of the primitive idempotents of the symmetric group and the Brauer algebra.

Yangian characters and classical W-algebras

The Yangian characters (or q-characters) are known to be closely related to the classical W-algebras and to the centers of the affine vertex algebras at the critical level. We make this relationship more explicit by producing families of generators of the W-algebras from the characters of the Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules associated with multiples of the first fundamental weight in types B and D and of the fundamental modules in type C. We also give an independent derivation of the character formulas for these representations in the context of the RTT presentation of the Yangians. In all cases the generators of the W-algebras correspond to the recently constructed elements of the Feigin-Frenkel centers via an affine version of the Harish-Chandra isomorphism.

A new fusion procedure for the Brauer algebra and evaluation homomorphisms

We give a new fusion procedure for the Brauer algebra by showing that all primitive idempotents can be found by evaluating a rational function in several variables which has the form of a product of R-matrix type factors. In particular, this provides a new fusion procedure for the symmetric group involving an arbitrary parameter. The R-matrices are solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation associated with the classical Lie algebras g_N of types B, C and D. Moreover, we construct an evaluation homomorphism from a reflection equation algebra B(g_N) to U(g_N) and show that the fusion procedure provides an equivalence between natural tensor representations of B(g_N) with the corresponding evaluation modules.

Feigin-Frenkel center in types B, C and D

For each simple Lie algebra g consider the corresponding affine vertex algebra V_{crit}(g) at the critical level. The center of this vertex algebra is a commutative associative algebra whose structure was described by a remarkable theorem of Feigin and Frenkel about two decades ago. However, only recently simple formulas for the generators of the center were found for the Lie algebras of type A following Talalaev's discovery of explicit higher Gaudin Hamiltonians. We give explicit formulas for generators of the centers of the affine vertex algebras V_{crit}(g) associated with the simple Lie algebras g of types B, C and D. The construction relies on the Schur-Weyl duality involving the Brauer algebra, and the generators are expressed as weighted traces over tensor spaces and, equivalently, as traces over the spaces of singular vectors for the action of the Lie algebra sl_2 in the context of Howe duality. This leads to explicit constructions of commutative subalgebras of the universal enveloping algebras U(g[t]) and U(g), and to higher order Hamiltonians in the Gaudin model associated with each Lie algebra g. We also introduce analogues of the Bethe subalgebras of the Yangians Y(g) and show that their graded images coincide with the respective commutative subalgebras of U(g[t]).

Idempotents for Birman-Murakami-Wenzl algebras and reflection equation

A complete system of pairwise orthogonal minimal idempotents for Birman-Murakami-Wenzl algebras is obtained by a consecutive evaluation of a rational function in several variables on sequences of quantum contents of up-down tableaux. A by-product of the construction is a one-parameter family of fusion procedures for Hecke algebras. Classical limits to two different fusion procedures for Brauer algebras are described.

Combinatorial bases for covariant representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(m|n)

Covariant tensor representations of gl(m|n) occur as irreducible components of tensor powers of the natural (m+n)-dimensional representation. We construct a basis of each covariant representation and give explicit formulas for the action of the generators of gl(m|n) in this basis. The basis has the property that the natural Lie subalgebras gl(m) and gl(n) act by the classical Gelfand-Tsetlin formulas. The main role in the construction is played by the fact that the subspace of gl(m)-highest vectors in any finite-dimensional irreducible representation of gl(m|n) carries a structure of an irreducible module over the Yangian Y(gl(n)). One consequence is a new proof of the character formula for the covariant representations first found by Berele and Regev and by Sergeev.

Comultiplication rules for the double Schur functions and Cauchy identities

The double Schur functions form a distinguished basis of the ring Λ(x||a) which is a multiparameter generalization of the ring of symmetric functions Λ(x). The canonical comultiplication on Λ(x) is extended to Λ(x||a) in a natural way so that the double power sums symmetric functions are primitive elements. We calculate the dual Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in two different ways thus providing comultiplication rules for the double Schur functions. We also prove multiparameter analogues of the Cauchy identity. A new family of Schur type functions plays the role of a dual object in the identities. We describe some properties of these dual Schur functions including a combinatorial presentation and an expansion formula in terms of the ordinary Schur functions. The dual Littlewood-Richardson coefficients provide a multiplication rule for the dual Schur functions.
