Invariant-mass spectrum of $Λ\barΛ$ pair in the process $e^+e^-\rightarrowϕΛ\barΛ$

We show that the final-state interaction perfectly explains the recent experimental data of BESIII Collaboration on the near-threshold invariant-mass spectrum of $Λ\barΛ$ in the process $e^+e^-\rightarrowϕΛ\barΛ$. The position of peak in invariant-mass spectrum is above the threshold though the interaction of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ is due to an attractive potential. This potential has a simple form and depends only on two parameters. We show that the invariant-mass spectrum is consistent with the quantum numbers $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ and $2^{++}$ of $Λ\barΛ$ pair but contradicts to $J^{PC}=2^{-+}$.

Gauge invariance and amplitudes of two-photon processes

A method to derive the convenient representations for many two-photon amplitudes is suggested. It is based on the use of the gauge in which the photon propagator has only space components. The amplitudes obtained have no any strong numerical cancellations and, therefore, are very convenient for numerical evaluations. Our approach is illustrated by the consideration of the processes $e^+e^-\to e^+e^-e^+e^-$, $e^+e^-\rightarrow e^+e^-μ^+μ^-$, and $e^+e^-\to μ^+μ^-π^+π^-$. The method is extended on the case of polarized particles. The amplitudes obtained in this approach have been employed for extension of the event generator developed by F.A. Berends, P.H. Daverveldt, and R. Kleiss.

Parity violation in high-energy proton-proton scattering

A new approach is proposed to describe the parity violation in the process of scattering of a polarized proton by a proton at high energies. It is shown that in the tree approximation the P-odd amplitude of proton-proton scattering is substantially smaller than the P-odd amplitude in proton-neutron scattering. The main source of P-odd asymmetry in proton-proton scattering is radiative corrections due to the charge-exchange strong interaction. We predict that the asymmetry in the inelastic cross section is substantially less than the asymmetry in the elastic cross section.

Spin dynamics of a hydrogen atom in a periodic magnetic structure

The spin dynamics of a hydrogen atom during the passage of a periodic magnetic structure is discussed. The occupation numbers of the components of the hyperfine structure are considered as a function of time. The characteristic low-frequency oscillations are visible, which have a direct analogue in the effect of nuclear magnetic resonance. An envelope forms of these oscillations are found using the Krylov-Bogolyubov-Mitropol'skii method. The dependence of spin dynamics on the parameters of the magnetic structure is investigated. It is shown that this dependence is very sensitive to the structure of the magnetic field.

High-energy bremsstrahlung on atoms in a laser field

The impact of a laser field on the process of photon radiation by an ultra-relativistic electron in an atomic field is investigated. The angular distribution and the spectrum of the radiated photon are derived. By means of the quasiclassical approximation, the obtained results are exact in the parameters of the laser field and the atomic field. It is shown that the impact of the laser field is significant even for fairly average values of the laser field parameters routinely achievable nowadays. Therefore, an experimental observation of the influence of the laser field on bremsstrahlung in the atomic field is a very feasible task.

Possibility to investigate P-parity violation in nuclear collisions at facility NICA

A possible experimental setup for measuring the effect of parity violation in the interaction of the polarized proton or deuteron beams with an unpolarized target is discussed. One possibility is investigation of scattering of the proton or deuteron polarized beams on a thick internal target in one of the rings of the NICA collider. In this case, the spin of a circulating particles is transformed into a mode precessing in the horizontal plane using an RF flipper. The effect of parity violation will be studied by measuring the correlation of the interaction cross section of particles and the direction of their spins. In an alternative approach, the flipper transforms the spins of particles into a horizontal plane and the beam is extracted into the channel in a certain phase of the precession. In this more traditional experimental setup, the total cross section of the passage of particles through a dense target is measured, depending on the sign of the helicity of the polarization of the beam.

Angular distributions in $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}π^{0}(η)$ decays

The differential decay rates of the processes $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}π^{0}$ and $J/ψ\to p\bar{p}η$ close to the $p\bar{p}$ threshold are calculated with the help of the $N\bar{N}$ optical potential. The same calculations are made for the decays of $ψ(2S)$. We use the potential which has been suggested to fit the cross sections of $N\bar{N}$ scattering together with $N\bar{N}$ and six pion production in $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation close to the $p\bar{p}$ threshold. The $p\bar{p}$ invariant mass spectra is in agreement with the available experimental data. The anisotropy of the angular distributions, which appears due to the tensor forces in the $N\bar{N}$ interaction, is predicted close to the $p\bar{p}$ threshold. This anisotropy is large enough to be investigated experimentally. Such measurements would allow one to check the accuracy of the model of $N\bar{N}$ interaction.

Electron-positron pair production in ion collisions at low velocity beyond Born approximation

We derive the spectrum and the total cross section of electromagnetic $e^{+}e^{-}$ pair production in the collisions of two nuclei at low relative velocity $β$. Both free-free and bound-free $e^{+}e^{-}$ pair production is considered. The parameters $η_{A,B}=Z_{A,B}α$ are assumed to be small compared to unity but arbitrary compared to $β$ ($Z_{A,B}$ are the charge numbers of the nuclei and $α$ is the fine structure constant). Due to a suppression of the Born term by high power of $β$, the first Coulomb correction to the amplitude appears to be important at $η_{A,B}\gtrsim β$. The effect of a finite nuclear mass is discussed. In contrast to the result obtained in the infinite nuclear mass limit, the terms $\propto M^{-2}$ are not suppressed by the high power of $β$ and may easily dominate at sufficiently small velocities.

High-energy electroproduction in an atomic field

The differential cross section of high-energy electroproduction in the electric field of heavy atoms is derived. The result is obtained with the exact account of the atomic field by means of the quasiclassical approximation to the wave functions in the external field. The Coulomb corrections substantially modify the differential cross section compared with the Born result. They lead to the azimuth asymmetry in the differential cross section for the polarized incoming electron. The Coulomb corrections to the total cross section are obtained in the leading logarithmic approximation.

Charge asymmetry in the differential cross section of high-energy bremsstrahlung in the field of a heavy atom

The distinction between the charged particle and antiparticle differential cross sections of high-energy bremsstrahlung in the electric field of a heavy atom is investigated. The consideration is based on the quasiclassical approximation to the wave functions in the external field. The charge asymmetry (the ratio of the antisymmetric and symmetric parts of the differential cross section) arises due to the account for the first quasiclassical correction to the differential cross section. All evaluations are performed with the exact account of the atomic field. We consider in detail the charge asymmetry for electrons and muons. For electrons, the nuclear size effect is not important while for muons this effect should be taken into account. For the longitudinal polarization of the initial charged particle, the account for the first quasiclassical correction to the differential cross section leads to the asymmetry in the cross section with respect to the replacement $φ\rightarrow-φ$, where $φ$ is the azimuth angle between the photon momentum and the momentum of the final charged particle.

Double bremsstrahlung from high-energy electron in the atomic field

The differential cross section of double bremsstrahlung from high-energy electron in the electric field of heavy atoms is derived. The results are obtained with the exact account of the atomic field by means of the quasiclassical approximation to the wave functions and the Green's function in the external field. It is shown that the Coulomb corrections to the differential cross section (the difference between the exact result and the result obtained in the leading Born approximation) correspond to small momentum transfers. The Coulomb corrections to the differential cross section of double bremsstrahlung are accumulated in the factor, which coincides with the corresponding factor in the differential cross section of single bremsstrahlung. At small momentum transfer, this factor is very sensitive to the parameters of screening while the Coulomb corrections to the spectrum have the universal form.

Real and virtual $N\bar{N}$ pair production near the threshold

Nucleon-antinucleon optical potential, which explains the experimental data for the processes $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow p\bar{p}$ and $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow\mbox{pions}$ near the threshold of $p\bar{p}$ pair production, is suggested. To obtain this potential we have used the available experimental data for $p\bar{p}$ scattering, $p\bar{p}$ pair production in $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation, and the ratio of electromagnetic form factors of a proton in the timelike region. It turns out that final-state interaction via the optical potential allows one to reproduce the available experimental data with good accuracy. Our results for the cross sections of $e^{+}e^{-}\to6π$ process near the threshold of $p\bar{p}$ pair production are in agreement with the recent experiments.

Small-angle scattering and quasiclassical approximation beyond leading order

In the present paper we examine the accuracy of the quasiclassical approach on the example of small-angle electron elastic scattering. Using the quasiclassical approach, we derive the differential cross section and the Sherman function for arbitrary localized potential at high energy. These results are exact in the atomic charge number and correspond to the leading and the next-to-leading high-energy small-angle asymptotics for the scattering amplitude. Using the small-angle expansion of the exact amplitude of electron elastic scattering in the Coulomb field, we derive the cross section and the Sherman function with a relative accuracy $θ^2$ and $θ^1$, respectively ($θ$ is the scattering angle). We show that the correction of relative order $θ^2$ to the cross section, as well as that of relative order $θ^1$ to the Sherman function, originates not only from the contribution of large angular momenta $l\gg 1$, but also from that of $l\sim 1$. This means that, in general, it is not possible to go beyond the accuracy of the next-to-leading quasiclassical approximation without taking into account the non-quasiclassical terms.

Coulomb corrections to electron scattering on the extended source and the proton charge radius

It is shown that the account for the proton charge form factor in the Coulomb corrections to the electron-proton scattering cross section noticeably diminishes the difference between the value of the proton charge radius $r_{\mathrm{E}}$, extracted from the $ep$ scattering data, and that following from the muonic hydrogen data. For the electron energy much higher than the electron mass but much smaller than $r_{\mathrm{E}}^{-1}\approx 230$~MeV, the relative correction has the universal form $δr_{\mathrm{E}}/r_{\mathrm{E}}=-πα/2$, where $α$ is the fine structure constant.

High-energy $e^+e^-$ photoproduction in the field of a heavy atom accompanied by bremsstrahlung

Helicity amplitudes and differential cross section of high-energy $e^+e^-$ photoproduction accompanied by bremsstrahlung in the electric field of a heavy atom are derived. The results are exact in the nuclear charge number and obtained in the leading quasiclassical approximation. They correspond to the leading high-energy small-angle asymptotics of the amplitude. It is shown that, in general, the Coulomb corrections essentially modify the differential cross section as compared to the Born result. When the initial photon is circularly polarized the Coulomb corrections lead to the asymmetry in the distribution over the azimuth angles $φ_i$ of produced particles with respect to the replacement $φ_i\to -φ_i$.

Ultrarelativistic quasiclassical wave functions in strong laser and atomic fields

The problem of an ultrarelativistic charge in the presence of an atomic and a plane-wave field is investigated in the quasiclassical regime by including exactly the effects of both background fields. Starting from the quasiclassical Green's function obtained in [Phys. Lett. B \textbf{717}, 224 (2012)], the corresponding in- and out-wave functions are derived in the experimentally relevant case of the particle initially counterpropagating with respect to the plane wave. The knowledge of these electron wave functions opens the possibility of investigating a variety of problems in strong-field QED, where both the atomic field and the laser field are strong enough to be taken into account exactly from the beginning in the calculations.

Charge asymmetry in high-energy $μ^+μ^-$ photoproduction in the electric field of a heavy atom

The charge asymmetry in the differential cross section of high-energy $μ^+μ^-$ photoproduction in the electric field of a heavy atom is obtained. This asymmetry arises due to the Coulomb corrections to the amplitude of the process (next-to-leading term with respect to the atomic field). The deviation of the nuclear electric field from the Coulomb field at small distances is crucially important for the charge asymmetry. Though the Coulomb corrections to the total cross section are negligibly small, the charge asymmetry is measurable for selected final states of $μ^+$ and $μ^-$. We further discuss the feasibility for experimental observation of this effect.

Final state Coulomb interaction and asymmetry of pair production close to threshold in $e^+e^-$ annihilation

We investigate a contribution of the $d$ wave to the cross section of $e^+e^-$ annihilation to the pair of charged leptons or nucleons close to threshold of the process. In contrast to the point of view accepted in literature, due to the Coulomb final state interaction this contribution does not vanish even at zero relative velocity of produced particles. This results in the nonzero asymmetry in angular distribution at threshold. Though value of the asymmetry is small, observation of this effect is not hopeless.

Isoscalar amplitude dominance in $e^+e-$ annihilation to $N\bar{N}$ pair close to the threshold

We use the Paris nucleon-antinucleon optical potential for explanation of experimental data in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar p$ near threshold. It turns out that final-state interaction due to Paris optical potential allows us to reproduce available experimental data. It follows from our consideration that the isoscalar form factor is much larger than the isovector one.

Kinetics of polarization in non-relativistic scattering

An approach is developed, which essentially simplifies derivation of kinetic equation for polarization in non-relativistic scattering. This approach is applicable for collision of projectile particles with a target for any spins of colliding particles. The most detailed consideration is performed for the case of spin 1/2 projectile particle interacting with spin 1/2 particle of a target. The solution of the kinetic equation for the case of zero initial polarization is presented.

Angular distribution of high-energy $e^+e^-$ photoproduction close to the end of spectrum

We consider the differential cross section of electron-positron pair production by a high-energy photon in a strong Coulomb field close to the end of the electron or positron spectrum. When the momentum transfer largely exceeds the electron mass, the cross section is obtained analytically in a compact form. Coulomb corrections essentially modify the cross section even for moderate values of the nuclear charge number $Z$. In the same kinematical region, the angular distribution for bound-free pair production, bremsstrahlung, and photorecombination is also obtained.

Does the side jump effect exist?

The side-jump effect is a manifestation of the spin orbit interaction in electron scattering from an atom/ion/impurity. The effect has a broad interest because of its conceptual importance for generic spin-orbital physics, in particular the effect is widely discussed in spintronics. We reexamine the effect accounting for the exact nonperturbative electron wave function inside the atomic core. We find that value of the effect is much smaller than estimates accepted in literature. The reduction factor is 1/Z^2, where Z is the nucleus charge of the atom/impurity. This implies that the side-jump effect is practically irrelevant for spintronics, the skew scattering and/or the intrinsic mechanism always dominate the anomalous Hall and spin Hall effects.

New quantum-mechanical phenomenon in a model of electron-electron interaction in graphene

A quantum mechanical model of two interacting electrons in graphene is considered. We concentrate on the case of zero total momentum of the pair. We show that the dynamics of the system is very unusual. Both stationary and time-dependent problems are considered. It is shown that the complete set of the wave functions with definite energy includes the new functions, previously overlooked. The time evolution of the wave packet, corresponding to the scattering problem setup, leads to the appearance of the localized state at large time. The asymptotics of this state is found analytically. We obtain the lower bound of the life time of this state, which is connected with the breakdown of the continuous model on the lattice scale. The estimate of this bound gives one a hope to observe the localized states in the experiment.

Quasiclassical approach to high-energy QED processes in strong laser and atomic fields

An approach, based on the use of the quasiclassical Green's function, is developed for investigating high-energy quantum electrodynamical processes in combined strong laser and atomic fields. Employing an operator technique, we derive the Green's function of the Dirac equation in an arbitrary plane wave and a localized potential. Then, we calculate the total cross section of high-energy electron-positron photoproduction in an atomic field of arbitrary charge number (Bethe-Heitler process) in the presence of a strong laser field. It is shown that the laser field substantially modifies the cross section at already available incoming photon energies and laser parameters. This makes it feasible to observe the analogous effect in a laser field of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect for the Bethe-Heitler process.

Charge asymmetry in the differential cross section of high-energy e+e- photoproduction in the field of a heavy atom

First quasiclassical correction to the differential cross section of high-energy electron-positron photoproduction in the electric field of a heavy atom is obtained with the exact account of the field. This correction is responsible for the charge asymmetry ${\cal A}$ in this process. When the transverse momentum of at least one of the produced particles is much larger than the electron mass $m$, the charge asymmetry can be as large as tens percent. We also estimate the contribution $\tilde{\cal A}$ to the charge asymmetry coming from the Compton-type diagram. For heavy nuclei, this contribution is negligible. For light nuclei, $\tilde{\cal A}$ is noticeable only when the angle between the momenta of electron and positron is of order of $m/ω$ ($ω$ is the photon energy) while the transverse momenta of both particles are much larger than $m$.

Effective field theories and spin-wave excitations in helical magnets

We consider two classes of helical magnets. The first one has magnetic ordering close to antiferromagnet and the second one has magnetic ordering close to ferromagnet. The first case is relevant to cuprate superconductors and the second case is realized in FeSrO$_3$ and FeCaO$_3$. We derive the effective field theories for these cases and calculate corresponding excitation spectra. We demonstrate that the "hourglass" spin-wave dispersion observed experimentally in cuprates is a fingerprint of the "antiferromagnetic spin spiral state". We also show that quantum fluctuations are important for the "ferromagnetic spin spiral", they influence qualitative features of the spin-wave dispersion.

Heavy quark spin structure in Z_b resonances

We discuss the heavy quark spin structure of the recently observed `twin' resonances $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$ assuming that these are mostly of a `molecular' type, i.e. that their internal dynamics is dominated by the coupling to meson pairs $B^* \bar B - B {\bar B}^*$ and $B^* {\bar B}^*$. We find that the state of the $b \bar b$ pair within the $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$ resonances is a mixture of a spin-triplet and a spin-singlet of equal amplitude and with the phase orthogonal between the two resonances. Such a structure gives rise to specific relations between observable amplitudes that are in agreement with the data obtained recently by Belle. We also briefly discuss possible properties of the isotopically singlet counterparts of the newly found resonances, and also of their $C$ ($G$) parity opposites that likely exist in the same mass range near the open $B$ flavor threshold.

Effect of a strong laser field on $e^+ e^-$ photoproduction by relativistic nuclei

We study the influence of a strong laser field on the Bethe-Heitler photoproduction process by a relativistic nucleus. The laser field propagates in the same direction as the incoming high-energy photon and it is taken into account exactly in the calculations. Two cases are considered in detail. In the first case, the energy of the incoming photon in the nucleus rest frame is much larger than the electron's rest energy. The presence of the laser field may significantly suppress the photoproduction rate at soon available values of laser parameters. In the second case, the energy of the incoming photon in the rest frame of the nucleus is less than and close to the electron-positron pair production threshold. The presence of the laser field allows for the pair production process and the obtained electron-positron rate is much larger than in the presence of only the laser and the nuclear field. In both cases we have observed a strong dependence of the rate on the mutual polarization of the laser field and of the high-energy photon and the most favorable configuration is with laser field and high-energy photon linearly polarized in the same direction. The effects discussed are in principle measurable with presently available proton accelerators and laser systems.

High-energy $e^+e^-$ photoproduction cross section close to the end of spectrum

We consider the cross section of electron-positron pair production by a high-energy photon in a strong Coulomb field close to the end of electron or positron spectrum. We show that the cross section essentially differs from the result obtained in the Born approximation as well as form the result which takes into account the Coulomb corrections under assumption that both electron and positron are ultrarelativistic. The cross section of bremsstrahlung in a strong Coulomb field by a high-energy electron is also obtained in the region where the final electron is not ultrarelativistic.

Nucleon polarization in the process $e^+e^-\to N\bar{N}$ near threshold

The process $e^+e^- \rightarrow N\bar N$ is studied nearby a threshold with account for polarizations of all initial and final particles. The nucleon polarization $\bm ζ^N$ reveals a strong energy dependence due to that of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors $G_E(Q^2)$ and $G_M(Q^2)$ caused by the final-state interaction of nucleons. It is shown that the modulus of the ratio of these form factors and their relative phase can be determined by measuring $\bm ζ^N$ along with the differential cross section. The polarization degree is analyzed using Paris $N\bar N$ optical potential for calculation of the form factors. It turns out that $|\bm ζ^N|$ is high enough in a rather wide energy range above the threshold. Being especially high for longitudinally polarized beams, $|\bm ζ^N|$ is noticeable even if both $e^+e^-$ beams are unpolarized.

Polarization of the electron and positron produced in combined Coulomb and strong laser fields

The process of $e^+e^-$ production in the superposition of a Coulomb and a strong laser field is considered. The pair production rate integrated over the momentum and summed over the spin projections of one of the particles is derived exactly in the parameters of the laser field and in the Born approximation with respect to the Coulomb field. The case of a monochromatic circularly polarized laser field is considered in detail. A very compact analytical expression of the pair production rate and its dependence on the polarization of one of the created particles is obtained in the quasiclassical approximation for the experimentally relevant case of an undercritical laser field. As a result, the polarization of the created electron (positron) is derived.

Spin-dependent part of $p\bar{p}$ interaction cross section and Nijmegen potential

Low energy $p\bar{p}$ interaction is considered taking into account the polarization of both particles. The corresponding cross sections are calculated using the Nijmegen nucleon-antinucleon optical potential. Then they are applied to the analysis of the polarization buildup which is due to the interaction of stored antiprotons with polarized protons of a hydrogen target. It is shown that, at realistic parameters of a storage ring and a target, the filtering mechanism may provide a noticeable polarization in a time comparable with the beam lifetime.

Strong suppression of Coulomb corrections to the cross section of e+e- pair production in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions

The Coulomb corrections to the cross section of $e^+e^-$ pair production in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions are calculated in the next-to-leading approximation with respect to the parameter $L=\ln γ_Aγ_B$ ($γ_{A,B}$ are the Lorentz factors of colliding nuclei). We found considerable reduction of the Coulomb corrections even for large $γ_Aγ_B$ due to the suppression of the production of $e^+e^-$ pair with the total energy of the order of a few electron masses in the rest frame of one of the nuclei. Our result explains why the deviation from the Born result were not observed in the experiment at SPS.

Correction to the Moliere's formula for multiple scattering

The quasiclassical correction to the Moliere's formula for multiple scattering is derived. The consideration is based on the scattering amplitude, obtained with the first quasiclassical correction taken into account for arbitrary localized but not spherically symmetric potential. Unlike the leading term, the correction to the Moliere's formula contains the target density $n$ and thickness $L$ not only in the combination $nL$ (areal density). Therefore, this correction can be reffered to as the bulk density correction. It turns out that the bulk density correction is small even for high density. This result explains the wide region of applicability of the Moliere's formula.

Quasiclassical description of bremsstrahlung accompanying alpha decay including quadrupole radiation

We present a quasiclassical theory of alpha decay accompanied by bremsstrahlung with a special emphasis on the case of 210Po, with the aim of finding a unified description that incorporates both the radiation during the tunneling through the Coulomb wall and the finite energy E_gamma of the radiated photon up to E_gamma on the order of Q_alpha/sqrt(eta), where Q_alpha is the alpha-decay Q-value and eta is the Sommerfeld parameter. The corrections with respect to previous quasiclassical investigations are found to be substantial, and excellent agreement with a full quantum mechanical treatment is achieved. Furthermore, we find that a dipole-quadrupole interference significantly changes the alpha-gamma angular correlation. We obtain good agreement between our theoretical predictions and experimental results.

Laser-dressed vacuum polarization in a Coulomb field

We investigate quantum electrodynamic effects under the influence of an external, time-dependent electromagnetic field, which mediates dynamic modifications of the radiative corrections. Specifically, we consider the quantum electrodynamic vacuum-polarization tensor under the influence of two external background fields: a strong laser field and a nuclear Coulomb field. We calculate the charge and current densities induced by a nuclear Coulomb field in the presence of a laser field. We find the corresponding induced scalar and vector potentials. The induced potential, in first-order perturbation theory, leads to a correction to atomic energy levels. The external laser field breaks the rotational symmetry of the system. Consequently, the induced charge density is not spherically symmetric, and the energy correction therefore leads to a "polarized Lamb shift." In particular, the laser generates an additional potential with a quadrupole moment. The corresponding laser-dressed vacuum-polarization potential behaves like 1/r**3 at large distances, unlike the Uehling potential that vanishes exponentially for large r. Our investigation might be useful for other situations where quantum field theoretic phenomena are subjected to external fields of a rather involved structure.

Relativistic corrections to the electromagnetic polarizabilities of compound systems

The low-energy amplitude of Compton scattering on the bound state of two charged particles of arbitrary masses, charges and spins is calculated. A case in which the bound state exists due to electromagnetic interaction (QED) is considered. The term, proportional to $ω^2$, is obtained taking into account the first relativistic correction. It is shown that the complete result for this correction differs essentially from the commonly used term $Δα$, proportional to the r.m.s. charge radius of the system. We propose that the same situation can take place in the more complicated case of hadrons.

Compton Scattering by Nuclei

The concept of Compton scattering by even-even nuclei from giant-resonance to nucleon-resonance energies and the status of experimental and theoretical researches in this field are outlined. Nuclear Compton scattering in the giant-resonance energy-region provides information on the dynamical properties of the in-medium mass of the nucleon. The electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon in the nuclear medium can be extracted from nuclear Compton scattering data obtained in the quasi-deuteron energy-region. Recent results are presented for two-body effects due to the mesonic seagull amplitude and due to the excitation of nucleon internal degrees of freedom accompanied by meson exchanges. Due to these studies the in-medium electromagnetic polarizabilities are by now well understood, whereas the understanding of nuclear Compton scattering in the Delta-resonance range is only at the beginning. Phenomenological methods how to include retardation effects in the scattering amplitude are discussed and compared with model predictions.
