Single particle tracking uncertainties in ion imaging

An extensive comparison of the path uncertainty in single particle tracking systems for ion imaging was carried out based on Monte Carlo simulations. The spatial resolution as function of system parameters such as geometry, detector properties and the energy of proton and helium beams was investigated to serve as a guideline for hardware developments. Primary particle paths were sampled within a water volume and compared to the most likely path estimate obtained from detector measurements, yielding a depth-dependent uncertainty envelope. The maximum uncertainty along this curve was converted to a conservative estimate of the minimal radiographic pixel spacing for a single set of parameter values. Simulations with various parameter settings were analysed to obtain an overview of the reachable pixel spacing as function of system parameters. The results were used to determine intervals of detector material budget and position resolution that yield a pixel spacing small enough for clinical dose calculation. To ensure a pixel spacing below 2 mm, the material budget of a detector should remain below 0.25 % for a position resolution of 200 $\mathrm{μm}$ or below 0.75 % for a resolution of 10 $\mathrm{μm}$. Using protons, a sub-millimetre pixel size could not be achieved for a phantom size of 300 mm or at a large clearance. With helium ions, a sub-millimetre pixel spacing could be achieved even for a large phantom size and clearance, provided the position resolution was less than 100 $\mathrm{μm}$ and material budget was below 0.75 %.

Imaging with protons at MedAustron

Ion beam therapy has become a frequently applied form of cancer therapy over the last years. The advantage of ion beam therapy over conventional radiotherapy using photons is the strongly localized dose deposition, leading to a reduction of dose applied to surrounding healthy tissue. Currently, treatment planning for proton therapy is based on X-ray computed tomography, which entails certain sources of inaccuracy in alculation of the stopping power (SP). A more precise method to acquire the SP is to directly use high energy protons (or other ions such as carbon) and perform proton computed tomography (pCT). With this method, the ions are tracked prior to entering and after leaving the patient and finally their residual energy is measured at the very end. Therefore, an ion imaging demonstrator, comprising a tracking telescope made from double-sided silicon strip detectors and a range telescope as a residual energy detector, was set up. First measurements with this setup were performed at beam tests at MedAustron, a center for ion therapy and research in \mbox{Wiener Neustadt}, \mbox{Austria}. The facility provides three rooms for cancer treatment with proton beams as well as one which is dedicated to non-clinical research. This contribution describes the principle of ion imaging with proton beams in general as well as the design of the experimental setup. Moreover, first results from simulations and recent beam tests as well as ideas for future developments will be presented.

Hadronic shift in pionic hydrogen

The hadronic shift in pionic hydrogen has been redetermined to be $ε_{1s}=7.086\,\pm\,0.007(stat)\,\pm\,0.006(sys)$\,eV by X-ray spectroscopy of ground state transitions applying various energy calibration schemes. The experiment was performed at the high-intensity low-energy pion beam of the Paul Scherrer Institut by using the cyclotron trap and an ultimate-resolution Bragg spectrometer with bent crystals.

Studies on the Cherenkov Effect for Improved Time Resolution of TOF-PET

With the newly gained interest in the time of flight method for positron emission tomography (TOF-PET), many options for pushing the time resolution to its borders have been investigated. As one of these options the exploitation of the Cherenkov effect has been proposed, since it allows to bypass the scintillation process and therefore provides almost instantaneous response to incident 511keV annihilation photons. Our simulation studies on the yield of Cherenkov photons, their arrival rate at the photon detector and their angular distribution reveal a significant influence by Cherenkov photons on the rise time of inorganic scintillators - a key-parameter for TOF in PET. A measurement shows the feasibility to detect Cherenkov photons in this low energy range.

Pionic deuterium

The strong interaction shift $ε$ and broadening Γ in pionic deuterium have been determined in a high statistics study of the πD(3p - 1s) X-ray transition using a high-resolution crystal spectrometer. The pionic deuterium shift will provide constraints for the pion-nucleon isospin scattering lengths extracted from measurements of shift and broadening in pionic hydrogen. The hadronic broadening is related to pion absorption and production at threshold. The results are ε= (-2356 {\pm} 31)meV (repulsive) and Γ1s = (1171+23/-49) meV yielding for the complex πD scattering length a = [-(24.99 {\pm} 0.33) + i (6.22+0.12/-0.26)]x10-3/mπ. From the imaginary part, the threshold parameter for pion production is obtained to be α = (251 +5/-11) μb. This allows, in addition, and by using results from pion absorption in 3He at threshold, the determination of the effective couplings g0 and g1 for s-wave pion absorption on isoscalar and isovector NN pairs.

Pionic Deuterium

The strong interaction shift and broadening in pionic deuterium have been remeasured with high statistics by means of the (3p-1s) X-ray transition using the cyclotron trap and a high-resolution crystal spectrometer. Preliminary results are (-2325+/-31) meV (repulsive) for the shift and (1171+23/-49} meV for the width, which yields precise values for the pion-deuteron scattering length and the threshold parameter for pion production.

Precision determination of the dpi -> NN transition strength at threshold

An unusual but effective way to determine at threshold the dpi -> NN transition strength is to exploit the hadronic ground-state broadening in pionic deuterium, accessible by x-ray spectroscopy. The broadening is dominated by the true absorption channel dpi- -> nn, which is related to s-wave pion production pp -> dpi+ by charge symmetry and detailed balance. Using the exotic atom circumvents the problem of Coulomb corrections to the cross section as necessary in the production experiments. Our dedicated measurement finds (1171+23/-49) meV for the broadening yielding (252+5/-11) \mub.
