ATLAS - I. Third Release of 1.4 GHz Mosaics and Component Catalogues

We present the third data release from the Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS). These data combine the observations at 1.4 GHz before and after upgrades to the Australia Telescope Compact Array reaching a sensitivity of 14 microJy/beam in 3.6 deg^2 over the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) and of 17 microJy/beam in 2.7 deg^2 over the European Large Area ISO Survey South 1 (ELAIS-S1). We used a variety of array configurations to maximise the uv coverage resulting in a resolution of 16 by 7 arcsec in CDFS and of 12 by 8 arcsec in ELAIS-S1. After correcting for peak bias and bandwidth smearing, we find a total of 3034 radio source components above 5 sigma in CDFS, of which 514 (17 per cent) are considered to be extended. The number of components detected above 5 sigma in ELAIS-S1 is 2084, of which 392 (19 per cent) are classified as extended. The catalogues include reliable spectral indices (delta alpha < 0.2) between 1.40 and 1.71 GHz for ~350 of the brightest components.

Far-infrared optical conductivity of CeCu2Si2

Journal ref.: J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 25, 065602 (2013): We investigated the optical reflectivity of the heavy-fermion metal CeCu2Si2 in the energy range 3 meV - 30 eV for temperatures between 4K - 300K. The results for the charge dynamics indicate a behavior that is expected for the formation of a coherent heavy quasiparticle state: Upon cooling the spectra of the optical conductivity indicate a narrowing of the coherent response. Below temperatures of 30 K a considerable suppression of conductivity evolves below a peak structure at 13 meV. We assign this gap-like feature to strong electron correlations due to the 4f-conduction electron hybridization.

Magnetic excitations in one-dimensional spin-orbital models

We study the dynamics and thermodynamics of one-dimensional spin-orbital models relevant for transition metal oxides. We show that collective spin, orbital, and combined spin-orbital excitations with infinite lifetime can exist, if the ground state of both sectors is ferromagnetic. Our main focus is the case of effectively ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic) exchange for the spin (orbital) sector, respectively, and we investigate the renormalization of spin excitations via spin-orbital fluctuations using a boson-fermion representation. We contrast a mean-field decoupling approach with results obtained by treating the spin-orbital coupling perturbatively. Within the latter self-consistent approach we find a significant increase of the linewidth and additional structures in the dynamical spin structure factor as well as Kohn anomalies in the spin-wave dispersion caused by the scattering of spin excitations from orbital fluctuations. Finally, we analyze the specific heat c(T) by comparing a numerical solution of the model obtained by the density-matrix renormalization group with perturbative results. At low temperatures T we find numerically c(T) T pointing to a low-energy effective theory with dynamical critical exponent z=1.

The dimerized ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain

Ferromagnetic, in contrast to antiferromagnetic, Heisenberg chains can undergo a Spin-Peierls dimerization only at finite temperatures. They show reentrant behavior as a function of temperature, which might play a role for systems with small effective elastic constants as, for example, monatomic chains on surfaces. We investigate the physical properties of the dimerized ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain using a modified spin-wave theory. We calculate the exponentially decaying spin and dimer correlation functions, analyze the temperature dependence of the corresponding coherence lengths, the susceptibility, as well as the static and dynamic spin structure factor. By comparing with numerical data obtained by the density-matrix renormalization group applied to transfer matrices, we find that the modified spin wave theory yields excellent results for all these quantities for a wide range of dimerizations and temperatures.

The J1-J2 Heisenberg model at and close to its z=4 quantum critical point

We study the frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg model with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor coupling J1<0 and antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor coupling J2>0 at and close to the z=4 quantum critical point (QCP) at J1/J2=-4. The J1-J2 model plays an important role for recently synthesized chain cuprates as well as in supersymmetric Yang Mills theories. We study the thermodynamic properties using field theory, a modified spin-wave theory as well as numerical density-matrix renormalization group calculations. Furthermore, we compare with results for the classical model obtained by analytical methods and Monte-Carlo simulations. As one of our main results we present numerical evidence that the susceptibility at the QCP seems to diverge with temperature T as chi ~ T^{-1.2} in the quantum case in contrast to the classical model where chi ~ T^{-4/3}.

Strong electron correlations in FeSb2: An optical investigation and comparison with RuSb2

We report investigations of the optical properties of the narrow gap semiconductor FeSb2 in comparison with the structural homolog RuSb2. In the infrared region the latter shows insulating behavior in whole investigated temperature range (10 - 300 K) whereas the optical reflectivity of FeSb2 shows typical semiconductor behavior upon decreasing the temperature. The conduction electron contribution to the reflectivity is suppressed and the opening of a direct and an indirect charge excitation gap in the far-infrared energy region is observed. Those gap openings are characterized by a redistribution of spectral weight of the optical conductivity in an energy region much larger than the gap energies indicating that strong electron-electron correlations are involved in the formation of the charge gap. Calculations of the optical conductivity from the band structure also provided evidence for the presence of strong electronic correlations. Analyzing the spectra with a fundamental absorption across the gap of parabolic bands yields a direct gap at 130 meV and two indirect gaps at 6 and 31 meV. The strong reduction in the free-carrier concentration at low energies and low temperatures is also reflected in a change in the asymmetry of the phonon absorption which indicates a change in the phonon-conduction-electron interaction.

Temperature- and Magnetic-Field-Dependent Optical Properties of Heavy Quasiparticles in YbIr2Si2

We report the temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent optical conductivity spectra of the heavy electron metal YbIr$_2$Si$_2$. Upon cooling below the Kondo temperature ($T_{\rm K}$), we observed a typical charge dynamics that is expected for a formation of a coherent heavy quasiparticle state. We obtained a good fitting of the Drude weight of the heavy quasiparticles by applying a modified Drude formula with a photon energy dependence of the quasiparticle scattering rate that shows a similar power-law behavior as the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity. By applying a magnetic field of 6T below $T_{\rm K}$, we found a weakening of the effective dynamical mass enhancement by about 12% in agreement with the expected decrease of the $4f$-conduction electron hybridization on magnetic field.
