High-precision $α_s$ measurements from LHC to FCC-ee

This document provides a writeup of all contributions to the workshop on "High precision measurements of $α_s$: From LHC to FCC-ee" held at CERN, Oct. 12--13, 2015. The workshop explored in depth the latest developments on the determination of the QCD coupling $α_s$ from 15 methods where high precision measurements are (or will be) available. Those include low-energy observables: (i) lattice QCD, (ii) pion decay factor, (iii) quarkonia and (iv) $τ$ decays, (v) soft parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, as well as high-energy observables: (vi) global fits of parton distribution functions, (vii) hard parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, (viii) jets in $e^\pm$p DIS and $γ$-p photoproduction, (ix) photon structure function in $γ$-$γ$, (x) event shapes and (xi) jet cross sections in $e^+e^-$ collisions, (xii) W boson and (xiii) Z boson decays, and (xiv) jets and (xv) top-quark cross sections in proton-(anti)proton collisions. The current status of the theoretical and experimental uncertainties associated to each extraction method, the improvements expected from LHC data in the coming years, and future perspectives achievable in $e^+e^-$ collisions at the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) with $\cal{O}$(1--100 ab$^{-1}$) integrated luminosities yielding 10$^{12}$ Z bosons and jets, and 10$^{8}$ W bosons and $τ$ leptons, are thoroughly reviewed. The current uncertainty of the (preliminary) 2015 strong coupling world-average value, $α_s(m_Z)$ = 0.1177 $\pm$ 0.0013, is about 1\%. Some participants believed this may be reduced by a factor of three in the near future by including novel high-precision observables, although this opinion was not universally shared. At the FCC-ee facility, a factor of ten reduction in the $α_s$ uncertainty should be possible, mostly thanks to the huge Z and W data samples available.

High precision fundamental constants at the TeV scale

This report summarizes the proceedings of the 2014 Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics (MITP) scientific program on "High precision fundamental constants at the TeV scale". The two outstanding parameters in the Standard Model dealt with during the MITP scientific program are the strong coupling constant $α_s$ and the top-quark mass $m_t$. Lacking knowledge on the value of those fundamental constants is often the limiting factor in the accuracy of theoretical predictions. The current status on $α_s$ and $m_t$ has been reviewed and directions for future research have been identified.

Workshop on Precision Measurements of alphas

These are the proceedings of the "Workshop on Precision Measurements of alphas" held at the Max-Planck-Institute for Physics, Munich, February 9-11, 2011. The workshop explored in depth the determination of alphas(mZ) in the MS-bar scheme from the key categories where high precision measurements are currently being made, including DIS and global PDF fits, tau-decays, electroweak precision observables and Z-decays, event-shapes, and lattice QCD. These proceedings contain a short summary contribution from the speakers, as well as the lists of authors, conveners, participants, and talks.

Flavor Physics in the Quark Sector

One of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor and measurements and theoretical interpretations of their results have advanced tremendously: apart from masses and quantum numbers of flavor particles, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. Till early 1990s observations of CP violation were confined to neutral $K$ mesons, but since then a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral $B$ mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of $K, D$, and $B$ mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments, thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely. This report summarizes the results of the current generation of experiments that is about to be completed and it confronts these results with the theoretical understanding of the field.

Reshuffling the OPE: Delocalized Operator Expansion

A prescription for the short-distance expansion of Euclidean current correlators based on a delocalized modification of the multipole expansion of perturbative short-distance coefficient functions is proposed that appreciates the presence of nonlocal physics in the nonperturbative QCD vacuum. This expansion converges better than the local Wilson OPE, which is recovered in the limit of infinite resolution. As a consequence, the usual local condensates in the Wilson OPE become condensates that depend on a resolution parameter and that can be expressed as an infinite series of local condensates with increasing dimension. In a calculation of the nonperturbative correction to the ground state energy level of heavy quarkonia the improved convergence properties of the delocalized expansion are demonstrated. Phenomenological evidence is gathered that the gluon condensate, often being the leading nonperturbative parameter of the Wilson OPE, is indeed a function of resolution. The delocalized expansion is applied to derive a leading order scaling relation for $f_D/f_B$ in the heavy mass expansion.

Charm Effects in the $\bar{MS}$ Bottom Quark Mass from $Υ$ Mesons

We study the shift in the $Υ$ mass due to a non-zero charm quark mass. This shift affects the value of the $\bar{\rm MS}$ $b$-quark mass extracted from the $Υ$ system by about -20 MeV, due to an incomplete cancellation of terms that are non-analytic in the charm quark mass. The precise size of the shift depends on unknown higher order corrections, and might have a considerable uncertainty if they are large.

Heavy Quark Masses from the $Q\bar Q$ Threshold and the Upsilon Expansion

Recent results from studies using half the perturbative mass of heavy quark-antiquark n=1, ${}^3S_1$ quarkonium as a new heavy quark mass definition for problems where the characteristic scale is smaller than or of the same order as the heavy quark mass are reviewed. In this new scheme, called the 1S mass scheme, the heavy quark mass can be determined very accurately, and many observables like inclusive B decays show nicely converging perturbative expansions. Updates on results using the 1S scheme due to new higher order calculations are presented.

Quarkonia and the Pole Mass

The pole mass of a heavy quark is ambiguous by an amount of order $Λ_{QCD}$. We show that the heavy-quark potential, $V(r)$, is similarly ambiguous, but that the total static energy, $2M_{pole}+V(r)$, is unambiguous when expressed in terms of a short-distance mass. This implies that the extraction of a short-distance mass from the quarkonium spectrum is free of an ambiguity of order $Λ_{QCD}$, in contrast with the pole mass.

Top Quark Pair Production at Threshold: Complete Next-to-next-to-leading Order Relativistic Corrections

The complete next-to-next-to-leading order (i.e. $O(v^2)$, $O(v α_s)$ and $O(α_s^2)$) relativistic corrections to the total photon mediated $t\bar t$ production cross section at threshold are presented in the framework of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics. The results are obtained using semi-analytic methods and ``direct matching''. The size of the next-to-next-to-leading order relativistic corrections is found to be comparable to the size of the next-to-leading order ones.

Massive Quark Production in Electron Positron Annihilation to Order $α_s^2$

Recent analytical and numerical results for the three-loop polarization function allow to present a phenomenological analysis of the cross section for massive quark production in electron positron annihilation to order $α_s^2$. Numerical predictions based on fixed order perturbation theory are presented for charm and bottom production above 5 and 11.5 GeV, respectively. The contribution from these energy regions to $α(M_Z^2)$, the running QED coupling constant at scale M_Z, are given. The dominant terms close to threshold, i.e. in an expansion for small quark velocity $β$, are presented.

Perturbative O(alpha_s^2) Corrections to the Hadronic Cross Section Near Heavy Quark-Antiquark Thresholds in e+e- Annihilation

It is demonstrated how perturbative O(alpha_s^2) relativistic corrections to the non-relativistic stable heavy quark-antiquark production cross section in e^+e^- annihilation based on a Coulombic QCD potential can be systematically calculated using the concept of effective field theories. The O(alpha_s^2) corrections from the relativistic energy-momentum relation, the relativistic phase space corrections and the O(alpha_s^2) corrections involving the group theoretical factors C_F^2 and C_F T are determined explicitly. For the case of $t\bar t$ production the sum of these corrections amounts to 3% - 7% over the whole threshold regime and is insensitive to variations in the top width. Perturbative O(alpha_s^2) corrections to the leptonic decay width of heavy quark-antiquark $^3S_1$ vector resonances are extracted.

The Vacuum Polarization Function to O(alpha^2) Accuracy Near Threshold and Darwin Corrections

The QED vacuum polarization function is calculated to O(alpha^2) (next-to-leading order) accuracy in the threshold regime by using the concept of effective field theories to resum diagrams with the instantaneous Coulomb exchange of longitudinally polarized photons. It is shown that the O(alpha^2) contributions are of order alpha^2 in size rather than alpha^2/Pi^2. The vacuum polarization contributions to the O(alpha^6) hyperfine splitting of the positronium ground state are recalculated and differences with an older calculation are pointed out. The results are used to determine O(C_F^2 alpha_s^2) (next-to-next-to-leading order) Darwin corrections to heavy quark-antiquark bound state l=0 wave functions at the origin and to the heavy quark-antiquark production cross section in e^+e^- collisions in the threshold region. The absolute value of the corrections amounts to 10%-20% and 17%-34% in the modulus squared of the ground state wave functions at the origin for the $b\bar b$ and $c\bar c$ systems, respectively. In the case of the $t\bar t$ production cross section in the threshold region the absolute value of the corrections is between 2% and 6% around the 1S peak and between 1% and 2% for higher energies. A critical comment on recent QCD sum rule calculations for the $Υ$ system is made.

Two-Loop Corrections to the Electromagnetic Vertex for Energies close to Threshold

Two-loop contributions to the electromagnetic form factors are calculated in the kinematic regime close to the fermion-antifermion threshold. The results are presented in an expansion in the velocity $β$ of the fermions in the c.m. frame up to next-to-next-to leading order in $β$. The existence of a new Coulomb singularity logarithmic in $β$, which is closely related to the $O(α^2\lnα)$ corrections known from positronium decays, is demonstrated. It is shown that due to this Coulomb singularity $O(α^2)$ relativistic corrections to the non-relativistic cross section of heavy fermion-antifermion pair production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation cannot be determined by means of conventional multi-loop perturbation theory.

Hadron Radiation in Leptonic $Z$ Decays

The rate for the final state radiation of hadrons in leptonic $Z$ decays is evaluated, using as input experimental data for $σ(e^+e^-\to hadrons)$ in the low energy region. Configurations with a lepton pair of large and a hadronic state of low invariant mass are dominant. A relative rate $Γ_{l\bar l had}/Γ_{l\bar l}=6.3\times 10^{-4}$ is calculated. This result is about twice the prediction based on a parton model calculation with a quark mass of $300$ MeV. The rate for secondary production of heavy quarks is calculated in the same formalism.

preprint1994arXiv

Radiation of Heavy Quarks

The rate for the production of massive fermions radiated off a pair of massless fermions is calculated analytically. Combined with the analytic calculation of the corresponding virtual contribution one obtains the order $α^2$ correction to the cross section which is induced by the real and virtual radiation of a pair of massive fermions by massless fermions. Approximations valid for large and for small masses are derived and shown to agree with earlier calculations.
