Key directions for research and development of superconducting radio frequency cavities

Radio frequency superconductivity is a cornerstone technology for many future HEP particle accelerators and experiments from colliders to proton drivers for neutrino facilities to searches for dark matter. While the performance of superconducting RF (SRF) cavities has improved significantly over the last decades, and the SRF technology has enabled new applications, the proposed HEP facilities and experiments pose new challenges. To address these challenges, the field continues to generate new ideas and there seems to be a vast room for improvements. In this paper we discuss the key research directions that are aligned with and address the future HEP needs.

Next-Generation Superconducting RF Technology based on Advanced Thin Film Technologies and Innovative Materials for Accelerator Enhanced Performance and Energy Reach

Superconducting RF is a key technology for future particle accelerators, now relying on advanced surfaces beyond bulk Nb for a leap in performance and efficiency. The SRF thin film strategy aims at transforming the current SRF technology by using highly functional materials, addressing all the necessary functions. The community is deploying efforts in three research thrusts to develop next-generation thin-film based cavities. Nb on Cu cavities are developed to perform as good as or better than bulk Nb at reduced cost and with better thermal stability. Recent results showing improved accelerating field and dramatically reduced Q slope show their potential for many applications. The second research thrust is to develop cavities coated with materials that can operate at higher temperatures or sustain higher fields. Proof of principle has been established for the merit of Nb3Sn for SRF application. Research is now needed to further exploit the material and reach its full potential with novel deposition techniques. The third line of research is to push SRF performance beyond the capabilities of the superconductors alone with multilayered coatings. In parallel, developments are needed to provide quality substrates, cooling schemes and cryomodule design tailored to thin film cavities. Recent results in these three research thrusts suggest that SRF thin film technologies are at the eve of a technological revolution. For them to mature, active community support and sustained funding are needed to address fundamental developments supporting material deposition techniques, surface and RF research, technical challenges associated with scaling and industrialization. With dedicated and sustained investment, next-generation thin-film based cavities will become a reality with high performance and efficiency, facilitating energy sustainable science while enabling higher luminosity, and higher energy.

Nonlinear Meissner effect in Nb3Sn coplanar resonators

We investigated the nonlinear Meissner effect (NLME) in Nb$_3$Sn thin film coplanar resonators by measuring the resonance frequency as a function of a parallel magnetic field at different temperatures. We used low rf power probing in films thinner than the London penetration depth $λ(B)$ to significantly increase the field onset of vortex penetration and measure the NLME under equilibrium conditions. Contrary to the conventional quadratic increase of $λ(B)$ with $B$ expected in s-wave superconductors, we observed a nearly linear increase of the penetration depth with $B$. We concluded that this behavior of $λ(B)$ is due to weak linked grain boundaries in our polycrystalline Nb$_3$Sn films, which can mimic the NLME expected in a clean d-wave superconductor.

Nonlinear Dynamics and Dissipation of a Curvilinear Vortex Driven by a Strong Time-Dependent Meissner Current

We report numerical simulations of large-amplitude oscillations of a trapped vortex line under a strong ac magnetic field $H(t)=H\sinωt$ parallel to the surface. The power dissipated by an oscillating vortex segment driven by the surface ac Meissner currents was calculated by taking into account the nonlinear vortex line tension, vortex mass and a nonlinear Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) viscous drag coefficient $η(v)$. We show that the LO decrease of $η(v)$ with the vortex velocity $v$ can radically change the field dependence of the surface resistance $R_i(H)$ caused by trapped vortices. At low frequencies $R_i(H) $ exhibits a conventional increases with $H$, but as $ω$ increases, the surface resistance becomes a nonmonotonic function of $H$ which decreases with $H$ at higher fields. The effects of frequency, pin spacing and the mean free path $l_i $ on the field dependence of $R_{i}(H) $ were calculated. It is shown that, as the surface gets dirtier and $l_i$ decreases, the anomalous drop of $ R_{i}(H) $ with $H$ shifts to lower fields which can be much smaller than the lower critical magnetic field. Our numerical simulations also show that the LO decrease of $η(v)$ with $v$ can cause a vortex bending instability at high field amplitudes and frequencies, giving rise to the formation of dynamic kinks along the vortex. Measurements of $R_i(H)$ caused by sparse vortices trapped perpendicular to the surface can offer opportunities to investigate an extreme nonlinear dynamics of vortices driven by strong current densities up to the depairing limit at low temperatures. The behavior of $R_i(H)$ which can be tuned by varying the rf frequency or concentration of nonmagnetic impurities is not masked by strong heating effects characteristic of dc or pulse transport measurements.

Observation of the in-plane magnetic field-induced phase transitions in FeSe

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of FeSe under the in-plane magnetic fields using torque magnetometry, specific heat, magnetocaloric measurements. Below the upper critical field Hc2, we observed the field-induced anomalies at H1 ~ 15 T and H2 ~ 22 T near H//ab and below a characteristic temperature T* ~ 2 K. The transition magnetic fields H1 and H2 exhibit negligible dependence on both temperature and field orientation. This contrasts with the strong temperature and angle dependence of Hc2, suggesting that these anomalies are attributed to the field-induced phase transitions, originating from the inherent spin-density-wave instability of quasiparticles near the superconducting gap minima or possible Flude-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in the highly spin-polarized Fermi surfaces. Our observations imply that FeSe, an atypical multiband superconductor with extremely small Fermi energies, represents a unique model system for stabilizing unusual superconducting orders beyond the Pauli limit.

Anisotropy Reversal of the Upper Critical Field at Low Temperatures and Spin-Locked Superconductivity in K2Cr3As3

We report the first measurements of the anisotropic upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ for K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$ single crystals up to 60 T and $T > 0.6$ K. Our results show that the upper critical field parallel to the Cr chains, $H_{c2}^\parallel (T)$, exhibits a paramagnetically-limited behavior, whereas the shape of the $H_{c2}^\perp (T)$ curve (perpendicular to the Cr chains) has no evidence of paramagnetic effects. As a result, the curves $H_{c2}^\perp (T)$ and $H_{c2}^\parallel(T)$ cross at $T\approx 4$ K, so that the anisotropy parameter $γ_H(T)=H_{c2}^\perp/H_{c2}^\parallel (T)$ increases from $γ_H(T_c)\approx 0.35$ near $T_c$ to $γ_H(0)\approx 1.7$ at 0.6 K. This behavior of $H_{c2}^\|(T)$ is inconsistent with triplet superconductivity but suggests a form of singlet superconductivity with the electron spins locked onto the direction of Cr chains.

Reduction of Dissipative Nonlinear Conductivity of Superconductors by Static and Microwave Magnetic Fields

A theory of dissipative nonlinear conductivity, $σ_1(ω,H)$, of s-wave superconductors under strong electromagnetic fields at low temperatures is proposed. Closed-form expressions for $σ_1(H)$ and the surface resistance $R_s(ω,H)$ are obtained in the nonequilibrium dirty limit for which $σ_1(H)$ has a significant minimum as a function of a low-frequency $(\hbarω\ll k_BT)$ magnetic field $H$. The calculated microwave suppression of $R_s(H)$ is in good agreement with recent experiments on alloyed Nb resonator cavities. It is shown that superimposed dc and ac fields, $H=H_0+H_a\cosωt$, can be used to reduce ac dissipation in thin film nanostructures by tuning $σ_1(H_0)$ with the dc field.

Roles of intrinsic anisotropy and pi-band pairbreaking effects on critical currents in tilted c-axis MgB2 films probed by magneto-optical and transport measurements

Investigations of MgB2 and Fe-based superconductors in recent years have revealed many unusual effects of multiband superconductivity but manifestations of anisotropic multiband effects in the critical current density Jc have not been addressed experimentally, mostly because of the difficulties to measure Jc along the c-axis. To investigate the effect of very different intrinsic anisotropies of sigma and pi electron bands in MgB2 on current transport, we grew epitaxial films with tilted c-axis (THETA ~ 19.5°), which enabled us to measure the components of Jc both along the ab-plane and the c-axis using magneto-optical and transport techniques. These measurements were combined with scanning and transmission electron microscopy, which revealed terraced steps on the surface of the c-axis tilted films. The measured field and temperature dependencies of the anisotropic Jc(H) show that Jc,L parallel to the terraced steps is higher than Jc,T perpendicular to the terraced steps, and Jc of thinner films (50 nm) obtained from transport experiments at 0.1 T reaches ~10% of the depairing current density Jd in the ab plane, while magneto-optical imaging revealed much higher Jc at lower fields. To analyze the experimental data we developed a model of anisotropic vortex pinning which accounts for the observed behavior of Jc in the c-axis tilted films and suggests that the apparent anisotropy of Jc is affected by current pairbreaking effects in the weaker π band. Our results indicate that the out-of-plane current transport mediated by the π band could set the ultimate limit of Jc in MgB2 polycrystals.

Anisotropy of the irreversibility field for Zr-doped $(Y,Gd)Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ thin films up to 45T

The anisotropic irreversibility field B$_{Irr}$ of two $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ thin films doped with additional rare earth (RE)=(Gd,Y) and Zr and containing strong correlated pins (splayed BaZrO$_{3}$ nanorods, and $RE_2O_3$ nanoprecipitates), has been measured over a very broad range up to 45T at temperatures 56 K<T<$T_c$. We found that the experimental angular dependence of $B_{Irr}(θ)$ does not follow the mass anisotropy scaling $B_{Irr}(θ)=B_{Irr}(0)(cos^2θ+γ^{-2}sin^2θ)^{-1/2}$, where $γ=(m_c/m_{ab})^{1/2}=5-6$ for the RE-doped $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (REBCO) crystals, m$_{ab}$ and m$_{c}$ are the effective masses along the ab plane and the c-axis, respectively, and $θ$ is the angle between B and the c-axis. For B parallel to the ab-planes and to the c-axis correlated pinning strongly enhances B$_{Irr}$, while at intermediate angles, $B_{Irr}(θ)$ follows the scaling behavior $B_{Irr}(θ)\propto(cos^2θ+γ_{RP}^2sin^2θ)^{1/2}$ with the effective anisotropy factor $γ_{RP}\approx3$ significantly smaller than the mass anisotropy would suggest. In spite of the strong effects of c-axis BaZrO$_{3}$ nanorods, we found even greater enhancements of B$_{Irr}$ for fields along the ab-planes than for fields parallel to the c-axis, as well as different temperature dependences of the correlated pinning contributions to B$_{Irr}$ for B//ab and B//c. Our results show that the dense and strong pins, which can now be incorporated into REBCO thin films in a controlled way, exert major and diverse effects on the measured vortex pinning anisotropy and the irreversibility field over wide ranges of B and T. In particular, we show that the relative contribution of correlated pinning to B$_{Irr}$ for B//c increases as the temperature increases due to the suppression of thermal fluctuations of vortices by splayed distribution of BaZrO$_{3}$ nanorods.

Comment on: "Vortex-assisted photon count and their magnetic field dependence in single-photon superconducting detectors" by L.N. Bulaevskii, M.J. Graf and V.G. Kogan, Phys. Rev. B 85, 014505 (2012)

In this Comment we show that the statements made in PRB85, 014505 (2012) regarding our work (PRL 100, 227007 (2008))) are incorrect because they result from model artifacts. We address the issues neglected in PRB85, 014505 (2012) and discuss their importance for a more consistent theory of thermally-activated hoping of vortices in thin films and the interpretation of experimental data.

Effect of Impurities on the Superheating field of Type II superconductors

We consider the effect of nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities on the superheating field $H_s$ in a type-II superconductor. We solved the Eilenberger equations, which take into account the nonlinear pairbreaking of Meissner screening currents, and calculated $H_s(T)$ for arbitrary temperatures and impurity concentrations in a single-band s-wave superconductor with a large Ginzburg-Landau parameter. At low temperatures nonmagnetic impurities suppress a weak maximum in $H_s(T)$ which has been predicted for the clean limit, resulting instead in a maximum of $H_s$ as a function of impurity concentration in a moderately clean limit. It is shown that nonmagnetic impurities weakly affect $H_s$ even in the dirty limit, while magnetic impurities suppress both $H_s$ and the critical temperature $T_c$. The density of quasiparticles states $N(ε)$ is strongly affected by an interplay of impurity scattering and current pairbreaking. We show that a clean superconductor at $H=H_s$ is in a gapless state, but a quasiparticle gap $ε_g$ in $N(ε)$ at $H=H_s$ appears as the concentration of nonmagnetic impurities increases. As the nonmagnetic scattering rate $α$ increases above $α_c=0.36$, the quasiparticle gap $ε_g(α)$ at $H=H_s$ increases, approaching $ε_g\approx 0.32Δ_0$ in the dirty limit $α\gg 1$, where $Δ_0$ is the superconducting gap parameter at zero field. The effects of impurities on $H_s$ can be essential for the nonlinear surface resistance and superconductivity breakdown by strong RF fields.

Disorder-dependent superconducting phase-diagram at high magnetic fields in Fe$_{1 + y}$Se$_{x}$Te$_{1-x}$ ($x \sim 0.4$)

We compare the superconducting phase-diagram under high magnetic fields (up to $H = 45$ T) of Fe$_{1+y}$Se$_{0.4}$Te$_{0.6}$ single crystals originally grown by the Bridgman-Stockbarger (BRST) technique, which were annealed to display narrow superconducting transitions and the optimal transition temperature $T_c \gtrsim 14$ K, with the diagram for samples of similar stoichiometry grown by the traveling-solvent floating-zone technique as well as with the phase-diagram reported for crystals grown by a self-flux method. We find that the so-annealed samples tend to display higher ratios $H_{c2}/T_c$, particularly for fields applied along the inter-planar direction, where the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ exhibits a pronounced downward curvature followed by saturation at lower temperatures $T$. This last observation is consistent with previous studies indicating that this system is Pauli limited. An analysis of our $H_{c2}(T)$ data using a multiband theory suggests the emergence of the Farrel-Fulde-Larkin-Ovchnikov state at low temperatures. A detailed structural x-ray analysis, reveals no impurity phases but an appreciable degree of mosaicity in as-grown BRST single-crystals which remains unaffected by the annealing process. Energy-dispersive x-ray analysis showed that the annealed samples have a more homogeneous stoichiometric distribution of both Fe and Se with virtually the same content of interstitial Fe as the non-annealed ones. Thus, we conclude that stoichiometric disorder, in contrast to structural disorder, is detrimental to the superconducting phase diagram of this series under high magnetic fields. Finally, a scaling analysis of the fluctuation conductivity in the superconducting critical regime, suggests that the superconducting fluctuations have a two-dimensional character in this system.

Multi-band superconductivity in LaFeAsO_{0.9}F_{0.1} single crystals probed by high-field vortex torque magnetometry

To probe manifestations of multiband superconductivity in oxypnictides, we measured the angular dependence of the magnetic torque $τ(θ)$ in the mixed state of LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs single crystals as a function of temperature $T$ and magnetic fields $H$ up to 18 T. The paramagnetic contribution of the Fe ions is properly treated in order to extract the effective mass anisotropy parameter $γ=(m_c/m_{ab})^{1/2}$ from $τ(θ)$. We show that $γ$ depends strongly on both $T$ and $H$, reaching a maximum value of $\sim$ 10 followed by a decrease towards values close to 1 as $T$ is lowered. The observed field dependencies of the London penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ and $γ$ suggest the onset of suppression of a superconducing gap at $H \approx H_{c2}/3$.

Significant enhancement of upper critical fields by doping and strain in Fe-based superconductors

We report measurements of Hc2(T) up to 85 Tesla on Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 single crystals and FeSe1-xTex films tuned by doping and strain. We observed an Hc2 enhancement by nearly 25 T at 30 K for the optimally-doped Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 as compared to the previous results and extraordinarily high slopes dHc2/dT = 250-500 T/K near Tc in FeSe1-xTex indicating an almost complete suppression of the orbital pair-breaking. Theoretical analysis of Hc2(T) in FeSe1-xTex and the optimally doped Ba1-xKxAs2Fe2 predicts an inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state for H//ab and T < 3-10 K, and shows that Hc2 in multiband Fe based superconductor can be enhanced by doping and strain much more effectively than by the conventional way of increasing disorder.

The behavior of grain boundaries in the Fe-based superconductors

The Fe-based superconductors (FBS) are an important new class of superconducting materials. As with any new superconductor with a high transition temperature and upper critical field, there is a need to establish what their applications potential might be. Applications require high critical current densities, so the usefulness of any new superconductor is determined both by the capability to develop strong vortex pinning and by the absence or ability to overcome any strong current-limiting mechanisms of which grain boundaries in the cuprates are a cautionary example. In this review we first consider the positive role that grain boundary properties play in the metallic, low temperature superconductors and then review the theoretical background and current experimental data relating to the properties of grain boundaries in FBS polycrystals, bi-crystal thin films, and wires. Based on this evidence, we conclude that grain boundaries in FBS are weak linked in a qualitatively similar way to grain boundaries in the cuprate superconductors, but also that the effects are a little less marked. Initial experiments with the textured substrates used for cuprate coated conductors show similar benefit for the critical current density of FBS thin films too. We also note that the particular richness of the pairing symmetry and the multiband parent state in FBS may provide opportunities for grain boundary modification as a better understanding of their pairing state and grain boundary properties are developed.

Anisotropic upper critical field and a possible Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in a stoichiometric pnictide superconductor LiFeAs

Measurements of the temperature and angular dependencies of the upper critical fields $H_{c2}$ of a stoichiometric single crystal LiFeAs in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 T were performed using a tunnel diode resonator. Full $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(T)$ and $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(T)$ curves with $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(0)=17 \pm 1$ T, $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(0)=26 \pm 1$ T, and the anisotropy parameter ${γ_H}(T) \equiv H_{c2}^{\bot c}/H_{c2}^{\parallel c}$ decreasing from $\approx 2.5$ at $T_c$ to 1.5 at $T\ll T_c$ were observed. The results for both orientations are in excellent agreement with a theory of $H_{c2}$ for two-band $s^\pm$ pairing in the clean limit. We show that $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(T)$ is mostly limited by the orbital pairbreaking, whereas the shape of $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(T)$ indicates strong paramagnetic Pauli limiting and the inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)state below $T_F \sim 5$ K.

Helical instability of charged vortices in layered superconductors

It is shown that the electric charge of vortices can result in a helical instability of straight vortex lines in layered superconductors, particularly Bi-based cuprates or organic superconductors. This instability may result in a phase transition to a uniformly twisted vortex state, which could be detected by torque magnetometry, neutron diffraction, electromagnetic or calorimetric measurements.

Measurement of the nonlinear Meissner effect in superconducting Nb films using a resonant microwave cavity: A probe of unconventional pairing symmetries

We report observation of the nonlinear Meissner effect (NLME) in Nb films by measuring the resonance frequency of a planar superconducting cavity as a function of the magnitude and the orientation of a parallel magnetic field. Use of low power rf probing in films thinner than the London penetration depth, significantly increases the field for the vortex penetration onset and enables NLME detection under true equilibrium conditions. The data agree very well with calculations based on the Usadel equations. We propose to use NLME angular spectroscopy to probe unconventional pairing symmetries in superconductors.

Strong vortex pinning in Co-doped BaFe2As2 single crystal thin films

We report measurements of the field and angular dependences of Jc of truly epitaxial Co-doped BaFe2As2 thin films grown on SrTiO3/(La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3 with different SrTiO3 template thicknesses. The films show Jc comparable to Jc of single crystals and a maximum pinning force Fp(0.6Tc) > 5 GN/m3 at H/Hirr ~ 0.5 indicative of strong vortex pinning effective up to high fields. Due to the strong correlated c-axis pinning, Jc for field along the c-axis exceeds Jc for H//ab plane, inverting the expectation of the Hc2 anisotropy. HRTEM reveals that the strong vortex pinning is due to a high density of nanosize columnar defects.

High-field phase-diagram of Fe arsenide superconductors

Here, we report an overview of the phase diagram of single layered and double layered Fe arsenide superconductors at high magnetic fields. Our systematic magnetotransport measurements of polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ at different doping levels confirm the upward curvature of the upper critical magnetic field $H_{c2}(T)$ as a function of temperature $T$ defining the phase boundary between the superconducting and metallic states for crystallites with the ab planes oriented nearly perpendicular to the magnetic field. We further show from measurements on single crystals that this feature, which was interpreted in terms of the existence of two superconducting gaps, is ubiquitous among both series of single and double layered compounds. In all compounds explored by us the zero temperature upper critical field $H_{c2}(0)$, estimated either through the Ginzburg-Landau or the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg single gap theories, strongly surpasses the weak coupling Pauli paramagnetic limiting field. This clearly indicates the strong coupling nature of the superconducting state and the importance of magnetic correlations for these materials. Our measurements indicate that the superconducting anisotropy, as estimated through the ratio of the effective masses $γ= (m_c/m_{ab})^{1/2}$ for carriers moving along the c-axis and the ab planes, respectively, is relatively modest as compared to the high-$T_c$ cuprates, but it is temperature, field and even doping dependent. Finally, our preliminary estimations of the irreversibility field $H_m(T)$, separating the vortex-solid from the vortex-liquid phase in the single layered compounds, indicates that it is well described by the melting of a vortex lattice in a moderately anisotropic uniaxial superconductor.

Intergrain current flow in a randomly oriented polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.85 oxypnictide

We report a direct current transport study of the local intergrain connections in a polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.85 (Sm1111) bulk, for which we earlier estimated significant intergranular critical current density Jc. Our combined low temperature laser scanning microscopy (LTLSM) and scanning electron microscopy observations revealed only few grain-to-grain transport current paths, most of which switched off when a magnetic field was applied. These regions typically occur where current crosses Fe-As, which is a normal-metal wetting-phase that surrounds Sm1111 grains, producing a dense array of superconducting-normal-superconducting contacts. Our study points out the need to reduce the amount of grain boundary-wetting Fe-As phase, as well as the crack density within pnictide grains, as these defects produce a multiply connected current-blocking network.

Suppression of the critical temperature of superconducting NdFeAs(OF) single crystals by Kondo-like defect sites induced by alpha-particle irradiation

We report a comprehensive investigation of the suppression of the critical temperature Tc of NdFeAs(OF) single crystal by alpha-particle irradiation. Our data indicate that irradiation defects produce both nonmagnetic and magnetic scattering, resulting in the Kondo-like excess resistance $Δρ(T)\propto ln T$ over 2 decades in temperatures above $T_c$. Despite high densities of irradiation defects, the dose at which $T_c$ is suppressed to zero is comparable to that for MgB2 but is well above the corresponding values for cuprates.

Weak-link behavior of grain boundaries in superconducting Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 bicrystals

We show that despite the low anisotropy, strong vortex pinning and high irreversibility field Hirr close to the upper critical field Hc2 of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2, the critical current density Jgb across [001] tilt grain boundaries (GBs) of thin film Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 bicrystals is strongly depressed, similar to high-Tc cuprates. Our results suggest that weak-linked GBs are characteristic of both cuprates and pnictides because of competing orders, low carrier density, and unconventional pairing symmetry.

Can antiferromagnetism and superconductivity coexist in the high-field paramagnetic superconductor Nd(O,F)FeAs?

We present measurements of the temperature and field dependencies of the magnetization M(T,H) of Nd(O0.89F0.11)FeAs at fields up to 33T, which show that superconductivity with the critical temperature Tc ~ 51K cannot coexist with antiferromagnetic ordering. Although M(T,H) at 55 < T < 140K exhibits a clear Curie-Weiss temperature dependence corresponding to the Neel temperature TN ~ 11-12K, the behavior of M(T,H) below Tc is only consistent with either paramagnetism of weakly interacting magnetic moments or a spin glass state. We suggest that the anomalous magnetic behavior of an unusual high-field paramagnetic superconductor Nd(O1-xFx)FeAs is mostly determined by the magnetic Nd ions.

Comparative High Field Magneto-Transport of Rare Earth Oxypnictides with Maximum Transition Temperatures

The recent discovery of a new class of superconducting oxypnictides with high transition temperatures may have profound implications for understanding unconventional high-temperature superconductivity. Like the cuprates, the oxypnictides seem to manifest an interleaving of charge donor and superconducting layers emerging upon doping of an antiferromagnetic parent semi-metal. Here we report magneto-transport measurements of three rare earth (Re = La, Nd, Sm) oxypnicide compounds with the transition temperatures near the maximum reported to date, in very high DC and pulsed magnetic fields up to 45 and 54 T, respectively. Our resistivity, Hall coefficient and critical magnetic fields data suggest that these oxypnictide superconductors bridge the gap between MgB$_2$ and YBaCu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ as far as electromagnetic and vortex properties are concerned.
