CAFE2: an upgrade to the CAFE high-resolution spectrograph. Commissioning results and new public pipeline

The Calar Alto Fiber-fed Échelle spectrograph (CAFE) is a high-resolution spectrographs with high-precision radial velocity capabilities mounted in the 2.2m telescope of Calar Alto Observatory. It suffered from strong degradation after 4 years of operations and it has now been upgraded. The upgrades of the instrument (now named CAFE$_2$) aimed at improving the throughput and stability thanks to the inclusion of a new grating, an active temperature control in the isolated coudé room, and a new scrambling system among other minor changes. In this paper, we present the results of the re-commissioning of the instrument and a new pipeline (CAFExtractor) that provides the user with fully reduced data including radial velocity measurements of FGK dwarf stars. We have monitored the upgraded instrument for several months to characterize its main properties and test the new pipeline. It uses part of the CERES code, improves the wavelength calibration and radial velocity extraction (using the HARPS masks adapted), applies nightly drift corrections. The finally reduced spectra are presented in FITS files. The commissioning results show a clear improvement in the instrument performance with respect to the degraded status before the intervention. The room temperature is now stabilized down to 5 mK during one night and below 50 mK over two months. CAFE$_2$ now provides 3 m/s precision on the reference ThAr frames and the on-sky tests provide a radial velocity precision of 8 m/s during one night (for S/N>50). The throughput of the instrument is now back to nominal values with an efficiency of around 15% at 550 nm. The limiting magnitude of the instrument for a 1h exposure and S/N=20 is V=15. With all these properties, CAFE$_2$ enters into the small family of high-resolution spectrographs mounted on 2-4 meter-class telescopes capable of reaching radial velocity precisions below 10 m/s.

The Spanish Square Kilometre Array White Book

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is called to revolutionise essentially all areas of Astrophysics. With a collecting area of about a square kilometre, the SKA will be a transformational instrument, and its scientific potential will go beyond the interests of astronomers. Its technological challenges and huge cost requires a multinational effort, and Europe has recognised this by putting the SKA on the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). The Spanish SKA White Book is the result of the coordinated effort of 120 astronomers from 40 different research centers. The book shows the enormous scientific interest of the Spanish astronomical community in the SKA and warrants an optimum scientific exploitation of the SKA by Spanish researchers, if Spain enters the SKA project.

The role of potassium orbitals in the metallic behavior of K3picene

Detailed electronic structure calculations of picene clusters doped by potassium modeling the crystalline K3picene structure show that while two electrons are completely transferred from potassium atoms to the LUMO of pristine picene, the third one remains closely attached to both material components. Multiconfigurational analysis is necessary to show that many structures of almost degenerate total energies compete to define the cluster ground state. Our results prove that the 4s orbital of potassium should be included in any interaction model describing the material. We propose a quarter filled two orbital model as the most simple model capable of describing the electronic structure of K-intercalated picene. Precise solutions obtained by a development of Lanczos method show low energy electronic excitations involving orbitals located at different positions. Consequently, metallic transport is possible in spite of the clear dominance of interaction over hopping.

Ab initio electronic and geometrical structures of tripotassium-intercalated phenanthrene

The geometrical and electronic structure of tripotassium doped phenanthrene, \ce{K3C14H10}, have been studied by first-principles density functional theory. The main effect of potassium doping is to inject charge in the narrow phenanthrene conduction band, rendering the system metallic. The Fermi surface for the experimental X-rays unit cell is composed of two sheets with marked one and two dimensional character respectively.

Crystal structure and electronic states of tripotassium picene

The crystal structure of potassium doped picene with an exact stoichiometry (K3C22H14, K3picene from here onwards) has been theoretically determined within Density Functional Theory allowing complete variational freedom of the crystal structure parameters and the molecular atomic positions. A modified herringbone lattice is obtained in which potassium atoms are intercalated between two paired picene molecules displaying the two possible orientations in the crystal.Along the c-axis, organic molecules alternate with chains formed by three potassium atoms. The electronic structureof the doped material resembles pristine picene, except that now the bottom of the conduction band is occupied by six electrons coming from the ionized K atoms (six per unit cell). Wavefunctions remain based mainly on picene molecular orbitals getting their dispersion from intralayer edge to face CH/pi bonding, while eigenenergies have been modified by the change in the electrostatic potential. The small dispersion along the c-axis is assigned to small H-H overlap. From the calculated electronic density of states we expect metallic behavior for potassium doped picene.

Near-infrared and optical observations of galactic warps: A common, unexplained feature of most discs

Context: Warps occurring in galactic discs have been studied extensively in HI and in the optical, but rarely in the near-infrared (NIR) bands that trace the older stellar populations. Aims: We provide NIR data of nearby edge-on galaxies, combined with optical observations, for direct comparison of the properties of galactic warps as a function of wavelength, and calculate warp curves for each galaxy and obtain the characteristic warp parameters. We discuss these properties as possible constraints to the different mechanisms that have been proposed for the development and persistence of galactic warps. Methods: We observed 20 galaxies that were selected from a statistically complete diameter-limited subsample of edge-on disc galaxies. We used the Cerro Tololo Infrared Imager (CIRIM) at the CTIO 1.5m Ritchey-Chretien telescope to acquire the NIR data. We used the 1.54m Danish and 0.92m Dutch telescopes at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla site for our optical observations. Results: Our results show that 13 of our 20 sample galaxies are warped, with the warp more pronounced in the optical than at NIR wavelengths. In the remaining seven galaxies, no warp is apparent within the limitations of our automated detection method. The transition between the unperturbed inner disc and the outer, warped region is rather abrupt. S0 galaxies exhibit very small or no warps. The magnetic model remains one of a number of interesting formation scenarios.

The Calar Alto Observatory: current status and future instrumentation

The Calar Alto Observatory, located at 2168m height above the sea level in continental Europe, holds a significant number of astronomical telescopes and experiments, covering a large range of the electromagnetic domain, from gamma-ray to near-infrared. It is a very well characterized site, with excellent logistics. Its main telescopes includes a large suite of instruments. At the present time, new instruments, namely CAFE, PANIC and Carmenes, are under development. We are also planning a new operational scheme in order to optimize the observatory resources.

A catalog of warps in spiral and lenticular galaxies in the Southern hemisphere

A catalog of optical warps of galaxies is presented. This can be considered complementary to that reported by Sanchez-Saavedra et al., with 42 galaxies in the northern hemisphere, and to that by Reshetnikov & Combes, with 60 optical warps. The limits of the present catalog are: logr25 > 0.60, B_{t} < 14.5, delta(2000) < 0, -2.5 < t < 7. Therefore, lenticular galaxies have also been considered. This catalog lists 150 warped galaxies out of a sample of 276 edge-on galaxies and covers the whole southern hemisphere, except the Avoidance Zone. It is therefore very suitable for statistical studies of warps. It also provides a source guide for detailed particular observations. We confirm the large frequency of warped spirals: nearly all galaxies are warped. The frequency and warp angle do not present important differences for the different types of spirals. However, no lenticular warped galaxy has been found within the specified limits. This finding constitutes an important restriction for theoretical models.
